WELCOME TO THE f

WE WANT IT… WE NEED IT… WE’RE GONNA GET IT… Dip into those hashtag searches and you’ll know women are obsessed with supershiny and healthy-looking hair. We’re talking the kind of gleam that’s set to full beam, bouncing that light around their Instagram with a translucence that’s akin to sunbeams streaming through stained glass. Are you gonna give it to them? Then let Creative HEAD, in association with Wella Professionals, open the door to our residence of radiance – the House of Glaze! Across five fabulous floors at Most Wanted award-winning Electric Space in London, we tasked four Instagram influential colourists – our Glazers – to arm themselves with new Shinefinity from Wella Professionals and saturate us with shine. Jordanna Cobella, James Earnshaw, Daisy Goord and Zoë Irwin did not disappoint, each delivering a take on glossy, gorgeous, consumer-friendly colour. But that was just the beginning… 15 artists killing it on social media were handpicked to join in the fun, bringing their own models to get playing with technique, glaze and TikTok-worthy results, all while trialling Shinefinity for the first time. The biggest colour innovation from Wella Professionals in a decade, Shinefinity is zero lift and zero damage demi permanent colour that delivers super serious shine. Divided into teams – warm, cool, creative and natural, each one led by one of the Glazers – these artists from across the UK and Ireland were about to discover just how shiny bright the future of colour could look. Post lockdown, there’s a little rebellion in the (h)air. Pinterest forecasts rebellious hair as a serious trend for 2022 as consumers revolt against the restraints of lockdowns and social distancing, and searches for brighter, bolder colours are sky-rocketing . We need someone creative to get glazing… Well, hello James Earnshaw, digital ambas sador for Wella Professionals! James em braced the creative colour challenge with Sh inefinity by his side. This was a tale of two hal ves – beautiful, sheer glossy lilac on one, a kis s of bubble gum pink on the other – that will stay true to tone as it fades. “It just feels so modern and beautiful,” says James. “The colour palett e itself is one that a client would open up and say: ‘I want that shade’.” Sealed with a sw ish!

THE COOL ONE: DAISY GOORD @DAISY_GOORD

Okay, it might have become something of an obsession. Cool tones, icy finishes, banish-that-brass blondes have reigned supreme for an eternity (well, in social media terms anyway). Yes, we’re seeing warmer shades fighting back but let’s face it; cool blondes aren’t going anywhere. See Exhibit A: this easy, breezy and a little bit freezy glossy glaze from Daisy Goord, who delivers banging blondes all day. “I was getting asked all the time: ‘how do you do these colours without bumping the root?’ It would be about five or six steps to avoid that,” says Daisy. “Now it’s just one product. It’s all so much easier with Shinefinity.” It’s as reflective and shiny as an ice sculpture. Ring lights at the ready…

Have you noticed your clients craving for a bit of copper? After years of oh-so-co ol toned blondes, there has been a visib le shift to something a little warmer to heat up the palette we’re playing with. We’ve seen celebrities playing with a spectrum of reds, extending an invitation to those clients to take the plunge if they’ve been mulling it over but haven’t dared actually do it. Jordanna Cobella, queen of the colour menus and moodboa rds on display at Cobella, was an obvious choice to get warm and toasty with. “This is defin itely a product I have been begging Wella to bring out,” she laughs. “Zero lift and zero dam age are real USPs, perfect on very bleached hair like my own.” She’s serving us dimensio n with intense, beautifully blended red thanks to Shinefinity, and a heap of ’70s nostalgia with that burned russet result. That’s hot!

GREAT EXPECTATIONS SOME CLIENTS EXPECT DAMAGE FROM COLOUR, DREAD IT EVEN. THAT ALL CHANGES WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF WELLA PROFESSIONALS’ NEW COLOUR INNOVATION: SHINEFINITY ONE OF THE biggest barriers to clients seeking to change their hair colour has been, and will always be, damage. Because when clients think of hair colour, they assume that colour services are abrasive and harsh. They don’t stop to consider that, just like their smartphones, TVs and other tech, hair colour technology has been evolving too. Shinefinity has arrived to deflect every wrong assumption of what hair colour must mean. This new innovation from Wella Professionals is the brand’s biggest launch for a decade, and will shake up your colour services. Give yourself, and your client, an array of new colour options to play with – all without worry of damage, and the promise of envy-inducing shine.

GLEAM AND GLAZE

Shinefinity’s fluid and flexible formula is designed to give you endless versatility. Whether you’re a fan of precise brush and bowl application, or you like to go in straight from a bottle, the no-drip gelcream formula has your back. Its balanced pH technology gives you a long-lasting colour glaze, while retaining natural hair’s healthy shine and feel. It starts at a mildly alkaline pH, for optimal colour formation, before the pH slowly drops to a gentle acidic point of no less than 6.5, to ensure no additional lift and no damage. Simply mix your colour at a 1:1 ratio with the activator and apply. Apply how you say? That’s the beauty of Shinefinity – however you like! You can use the colours after blonding services, as a standalone colour service or on virgin hair, for an irresistible silky hair feel and healthy-looking shine. And it works fast – within 10 to 20 minutes in fact – making it the ultimate service for clients who are pressed for time. You can add heat for more intense results, and no post-colour treatment is needed. Shinefinity is your one-stop shop for effortless, stunning colour.

CORRECTIVE GLAZE

FOR CLIENTS WHO NEED TONES TWEAKING! Shinefinity is a stellar suggestion for correction services. Balance moderate unevenness or darken without pre-filling by applying on dry hair for maximum saturation. In 20 minutes your client will be good to go.

This is a great option to keep clients coming in between colour appointments to adjust or enhance their colour until their next key appointment. *When using the Shinefinity Power Shades. Not all shades are recommended for 10-minute development time.

BALANCING GLAZE FOR BESPOKE APPEAL!

Don’t worry, Shinefinity plays well with the rest of Wella Professionals’ colour portfolio. Use it to complement Koleston Perfect for balancing lengths and ends, or ILLUMINA COLOR on the root. TIPPING MAY SOON be more transparent across Ireland. The Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Bill will compel businesses to prominently display their policy on the distribution of both cash and card tips, as well as service charges. It will also oblige employers to distribute all tips that are received in electronic form through cards or smartphone payments in a fair and transparent manner. Under the new bill, the employer must provide a statement to workers showing the amount of electronic tips obtained in a period and the portion paid to the individual employee. An employer will be allowed to consider certain factors when deciding how to distribute tips, but all employees must be consulted on the policy that is introduced. The bill is widely expected to be enacted.

I worked with Uniques Salon Furniture in Kilkenny on original designs because I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted. It made everything from the nail table to the front desk,” she says. She continued the rebrand with a professional redesign of her logo, too: “I never really sit still. I probably will want to change something else before too long but right now I’m very happy.”

THE FACES

What would Hugh Campbell do?

THE PEOPLE IN ACTION

The Limerick salon group founder on handling challenging clients “CLIENTS ARE ALWAYS right, even when they’re wrong. If you start off from there, you’ll know the consultation stage of an appointment is key. You can place difficult clients into categories. You have demanding ones and you have ones with general grievances. These are the ones who keep you on a certain level, they can help you improve your service if you’re honest with yourself and transparent with them. The hairdressing business often inspires salons and individuals to develop certain areas of expertise. If you are honest with a demanding client about their requirement not being your speciality and instead make a good recommendation, you’ll foster long-term trust. I’m a specialist haircutter, for example, but I know someone else on my team is best for balayage. If I didn’t have anyone with that talent, I wouldn’t propose to cater to a client who wanted balayage. Demanding clients can be annoying in the moment, but they bring out the best in you because you can show them what you can do. Demanding clients are ultimately special –

everyone should have them! Holding onto them can make your salon a better business. The rare client we have with a grievance would usually come to us to talk rather than air their views on social media. Our clients aren’t keyboard warriors. We generally don’t get poor online reviews because we’re a personal business, we deal with complaints through listening. And when we’re finished listening, we listen again. If someone goes to the trouble of complaining in person or on the phone, they’re taking time out of their own lives and their grievance deserves our time and analysis. Sometimes people just need to be heard and we can always learn something. Whether it’s that client’s first visit or their tenth, it’s best to take the long view. See that complaint as an opportunity for growth. If they didn’t complain but then went elsewhere it would be much worse, and if the same grievance occurred to another client it would be worse again. @hughcampbellhairgroup

WHAT MADE ME GLEN CULLEN, INDUSTRY BY GLEN CULLEN, EDENDERRY, CO.OFFALY @industrybyglencullen

PASSION, SACRIFICE, AND determination, mixed with a bit of ‘mammy knows best’ advice is what made me. I have always worked hard, growing up seeing my mother Maria raise a big family and hold down a full-time job showed me that hard work really does pay off. When I was younger she showed me an advert for a competition that I went on to win, which gave me a scholarship to a private hairdressing academy.

18

018-020_Faces Ireland.indd 1

She always knew it was my path. I studied business with management and marketing as well, and it has really stood by me throughout my career and running a successful salon for the past six years. The award I am most proud of was my first. Two months into my training I entered the Fantasy category at the ALFAPARF Milano Fantastic Hairdresser Awards and won first place. My mother helped me with the piece, so it was a joint effort. I have worked with many celebrities and have had amazing opportunities in fashion, as well as working in Andy Lecompte’s salon in Beverly Hills – Madonna’s hairdresser. I have learnt so much and experienced a lot in a short time. My mother helped me see that no matter who is in my chair, they are the most important person in that moment.

MY JOB ENTAILS… Looking after my loyal clientele, educating the team, promoting Queen and the Queen team. I GOT HERE BY… Working hard and making the most of every opportunity that came my way. MY DAY CONSISTS OF… Juggling being a single mum with the salon, school runs, etc, and going to the gym.

EVERY DAY I VISIT… WhatsApp I check if I’ve had any messages from my family, we lost my mum last year so we keep in close contact.

THE HABIT I NEED TO BREAK IS… I’ve already done a lot of work on this, and I’ve come a long way, but I’ve been guilty of being too much of a people-pleaser in the past. THE MISTAKE I LEARNT THE MOST FROM IS… I’ve made too many errors to mention but you don’t learn without them. The more you make the more you learn. THE ADVICE I’M GLAD I IGNORED IS… “Don’t become a hairdresser”. MY INBOX LOOKS LIKE… A jumbled mess! MY BIGGEST INDULGENCE IS… Personal training sessions three times a week. I DECOMPRESS BY… Being with my friends and enjoying a nice glass or two of red!

Instagram: I’ll scroll and check the Queen Instagram for messages, likes and new follows, or I could be posting or resharing some work from the team.

Phorest: I check my own bookings for the day, week, and month ahead, and also see how the salon’s bookings are shaping up!

ZOË IRWIN, CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF JOHN FRIEDA SALONS, AND WELLA PROFES S IN MORE OFTEN TREND EXPERT (@ZOEIRWINHAIR), EXPLAINS HOW SHINEFINITY WILL GET BALAYAGE CLIENT “One of the issues that this industry has always had with balayage is that instead of clients having their hair done perhaps every eight weeks with foils, the soft grow out means you might not see your clients returning for four months. Wella Professionals Shinefinity gives you the ability to offer something new, where they come in for a glaze top-up after six to eight weeks. I would recommend booking the next appointment before they leave – perhaps to have a cut, a glass glaze and a blow-dry. “The softness of the glaze, as opposed to a lot of toners, ensures a brightness with a very delicate hue to it, and that’s really, really appealing to my clients. The care factor is hugely important; the way that the hair achieves a real kind of pretty glass finish but the strength of the hair is completely maintained. “The extensive shade range, and the fact that there are so many different tones, means you can give clients a lot of options. One of the huge trends for the next six months is double-hued and triple-hued blondes, layering and mixing shades for a multi-dimensional result.”

SUPER STORE

CREATE AN ONLINE SHOP AND START SELLING PRODUCTS – IT’S THAT SIMPLE WITH NEW FRESHA STORE! FROM THE WEEKLY groceries to a cheeky takeaway, lockdown encouraged us all to live our lives more online… and plenty of consumers love that convenience. Some salons even generated new income while closed, with an online shop ensuring loyal clients could stay supportive and keep their hair under control for all those Zooms… Now Fresha, the subscription-free appointment software, is ready to help transform your salon’s retail potential. Want to give your beloved clients an outstanding online shopping experience? Well, thanks to Fresha’s new store feature, you can. You’ll be joining quite a canny community. More than 60,000 hair, beauty and wellness partners and 200,000 professionals who manage their appointments, promote their services and protect their incomes with Fresha can now create an online store, promote and sell products, and collect payments all from one place.

A FEW CLICKS TO SET UP SHOP

Plenty of businesses worry about the technical skills needed to create an online shop, with Fresha you can build one in minutes. “We’ve created a simple, intuitive e-commerce experience within Fresha that’s designed for salon professionals, not IT experts,” says Nick Miller, Fresha co-founder. “In a few clicks you can personalise your store with a logo, store name and description.” You’ll then be able to offer clients all the products you wish, with all payments collected via Fresha Payment Processing. Kerching! You’ll get money upfront and Fresha simply charges a transaction fee of 1.29 per cent plus 20 cents, so you only pay as you sell. Refunds are easy too!

SHARE YOUR SHOPPING NEWS ON SOCIAL

When your store is set up, a unique link to it is generated to share, so it’s easy to promote it on social media, and using the marketing tools available on the Fresha platform, too. With delivery and collection options available, salons and independent stylists can offer clients the option to collect their shopping, reserve it for when they are next in, or have it posted directly to them, wherever they like. You make sure you have the right packaging and materials for a safe journey and arrival, and Fresha will ensure your clients have a simple and enjoyable shopping experience. It will also encourage clients to leave reviews – a great way to maximise additional income from product sales.

“THE POTENTIAL FOR ONLINE RETAIL IS HUGE, BUT MANY BUSINESSES HAVE YET TO TAKE ADVANTAGE. WE’VE MADE IT EASY TO CREATE A STORE IN FRESHA, MEANING SALONS HAVE EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE”

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

ASSESS WHAT YOU’RE USING

WANT TO BE CLEANER AND GREENER? WE HAVE A 10-POINT ACTION PLAN ON HOW TO WORK MORE SUSTAINABLY.THIS IS...

HOW TO CLEAN UP YOUR BUSINESS

Re-assessing your use of resources and materials is a great place to start. Water waste is a growing issue and you can mitigate and reduce your usage with a simple change to your wash basins. Switching to an energy provider that uses sustainable sources is also an easy fix that is definitely worth looking at, as is changing to LED lights in the salon and utilising natural light. Solar PV energy can cut costs while looking good to clients who care. The initial outlay may seem expensive, but the mid-to-long-term benefits outweigh it. Bellissimo Galway recently installed solar panels by EnergieXpro, an Ennis-based company. “We maximised every square meter on the roof by installing 207 panels that each generate 355W, a total of 75 kW of power,” says founder Mike O’Connor. “This is the equivalent saving of 22.37 tonnes of coal and 3,027 trees.” There’s no magic bullet, but small decisions do accumulate. “Reducing waste is key to becoming more sustainable,” explains Dr Elmar Mussenbrock, director of sustainability for Kao Salon Global. “Because what has not been used will not turn into waste and therefore cannot cause harm to our environment.”

FORGET ROSE-TINTED GLASSES, the only shade to be rocking now is green. Not only is it imperative that our industry starts facing up to the facts of its impact on the planet, but clients are also looking for evidence you’re thinking of the environment in how you work – an interest that’s only growing. Emily McTavish, Schwarzkopf Professional UK care and styling brand manager, says: “Being kinder to the planet isn’t something you can take or leave, it’s something we all need to work towards.” Operating at the heart of so many communities, salons are in a unique position to set standards for sustainability, as well as to spread information. “There is no Planet B,” says Lorraine Naughton, who’s run OB-1 in Maynooth – the first sustainable salon in Kildare – for almost 20 years. But if going big sounds intimidating and you don’t know where to start, we have just what you need with our 10-point plan…

OFFSET WHAT YOU CAN

THROW IN THE TOWELS

Using disposable towels may seem backward, but ditching is a habit to get into. Towels are surprisingly diva-esque in energy terms, from the energy they require to wash and dry, to treatments needed to keep them plush and pristine, as well as their usually less-than-green materials. “Being an Aveda salon, we try to be leaders in sustainability with any other brands we use,” says Kevin Bodenham of Moyo Hair & Beauty in Dublin, who uses biodegradable ProCare towels. “Using them also means we use less energy from the dryers and manpower, as well as for towel care. We also save tonnes of water and the carbon emissions from laundry. Not only that, they take up so much less room, 100 ProCare towels take the same space of 10 regular towels.”

Trim, Ballsbridge

Maxwell Oakley (pictured left) and Luke Davies (pictured right) set up barber shop Supply 91 in London to make a difference. “We genuinely believe that if we all pull together then seemingly small actions can have a large impact. It was vital from the start that we offset our carbon emissions by planting trees, one for every service or treatment,” Maxwell explains. “At first customers were surprised, but then said ‘why not?’” “We use wind energy where at all possible, as well as the Shopify Offset programme. Just constantly looking for partners who have sustainable philosophies is also very important to us,” says Shaun Moriarty, co-owner of The Greene Room in Tipperary.

KEEP CONTROL OF YOUR COLOUR

Some Irish salons have begun using Vish, a management system that helps you both avoid colour waste and to charge your worth. Vish was designed to not only measure colour accurately but to also use data and analytics to set prices, reduce stock costs, eliminate colour waste, and make life easier for colourists. “We’ve always worked hard to keep colour quite tight generally, both cost-wise and waste-wise,” explains Shaun Moriarty. “But I was pleasantly surprised by how much excess I found I could cut when we began using Vish.”

“I started my salon sustainability mission by switching to renewable energy and changing all lighting to LEDs. We’ve gone from producing 1.725 tonnes of CO2 in 2019 to a negligible amount in 2021. We use eco-certified cleaning products, disposable towels, and switching to Super Soft Shower heads has considerably reduced our water consumption and costs. We have a scheme where we refill clients’ Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Clean Performance bottles. This encourages our clients to recycle, reduces plastic use and they benefit from a discounted price.”

WHAT DOES ‘CLEAN’ REALLY MEAN? FOR SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL, IT’S ABOUT TRANSPARENT EFFORTS TO BE BETTER – BETTER FOR THE PLANET, BETTER FOR CLIENTS, BETTER FOR YOU. CASE IN POINT? THE NEW BONACURE CLEAN PERFORMANCE RANGES

INSIDE AND OUT YOU MAY HAVE heard the term ‘clean beauty’ bandied about and perhaps greeted it with trepidation or open arms. You want to meet the needs of clients clamouring for more ‘clean’ products, but you don’t want to simply ‘green-wash’ what

you do – you need to take a meaningful and authentic approach. Be safe in the knowledge you’re providing clients with effective yet sustainable products, with the new Bonacure Clean Performance collection from Schwarzkopf Professional.

RULE OF THREE

The seven Bonacure Clean Performance ranges create a perfect marriage of professional care for both clients and climate across its three foundational pillars: ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY – The development of vegan keratin is a real breakthrough. Combined with advanced cell equaliser technology to stabilise and strengthen hair strands, along with skincare-inspired actives you can deliver your professional care promise. CLEAN FORMULAS – The new formulas are 100 per cent vegan, and are free from sulphates, silicones, parabens, mineral oils, microplastics and artificial colourants. There’s also a high level of biodegradability so no need to worry once everything’s rinsed off! SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING – Packaging is now fully recyclable and made of up to 97 per cent recycled plastic. Not only that, the biggest Bonacure production plant sources 100 per cent green energy and uses a steambased cleaning system to reduce water consumption. The goal is for all production plants to use at least 50 per cent green energy by 2025.

No.5 Natural Organic

Liz Murphy, founder of No.5 Natural Organic salon in Dublin, says improved air quality for staff was a key driver in her decision to go all-organic. She mentions how often staff working at basins for hours in her previous salons would develop contact dermatitis from heavily fragranced or ammonia-infused products. She explains: “Stylists on the same floor who weren’t at the basin were not exposed and wouldn’t get rashes, so I knew it was worth making a commitment to free-from products.” Kevin Bodenham’s salon ‘living wall’ is periodically home to birds and insects, while providing green space in his team’s urban environment. “We’ve devised a way to water it with captured rainwater and keep the effect going with plants that absorb carbon dioxide and pollution inside.” Integrating nature into the salon design also has a calming effect on clients and improves the environment for those with respiratory issues.

34

030-035_CleanUpIreland.indd 3

You’d be surprised just how many of the products and tools you use daily could be recycled but aren’t. “In an average salon, about seven per cent of what is put in a normal recycling bin actually gets recycled,” explains Fry Taylor, founder of the Green Salon Collective. The average salon uses 1.5km of aluminium foils a month, according to Paper Not Foil. Its product can be re-used, is recyclable and photodegradable. Made from construction waste byproducts, it causes no harm to our environment. The Green Salon Collective points out that foils aren’t salons’ sole metallic waste. It’s all salon metals that are being sent to landfill. Hairspray cans and many styling products are likely to be made from metal, even Diet Coke cans are part of salon waste. A major issue for many council collections is that foils are too dirty and contaminated and risk leaching onto other materials which would make them all unfit for recycling. The Collective accepts and recycles even the filthiest foils. Lorraine Naughton, whose salon is already a member, points to the levy members add to products and services as a useful offset, saying customers are glad to pay extra. “They’d spend more on a coffee, and they’re definitely happy knowing the money is going to help the environment.”

Professional brands are making huge steps towards sustainability. Schwarzkopf Professional reevaluated the formulas and packaging of its Bonacure Clean Performance range. The new packaging is planet-friendly, fully recyclable and made of up to 97 per cent recycled plastic. The products contain a vegan keratin complex, and combined with its signature technology it means you never have to choose between performance and the environment. Simple swaps are a good place to start for clients who feel overwhelmed. A great example? Solid bar shampoos. By eliminating water in the formula, it reduces emissions during transport as bars are lighter, smaller and in boxes that can be recycled. Aveda, KMS, and WeDo/ Professional are some of the brands already doing this. Dr Elmar Mussenbrock points to another product to show how Kao’s reimagining of the norm can have results: “By putting SilkLift lightener in a resealable pouch, we save 80 per cent plastic, 85 per cent waste volume and 65 per cent carbon emissions on each pack – and it’s 97 per cent recyclable.” Production has a huge impact too: L’Oréal Group has reduced 81 per cent of CO2 emissions at its sites worldwide since 2005, and Aveda products are made using 100 per cent wind energy at its primary manufacturing facility. Some brands, including Great Lengths, have become B Corp certified, to show they are meeting high standards of environmentalism and corporate responsibility. Davines is also B Corp certified, and has been carbon neutral since 2018. It’s committed to becoming a Net Zero carbon emitter by 2030.

GIVE CLIENTS THE CHANCE TO REFILL

“Being more eco-friendly doesn’t mean things have to be expensive,” says Dan Mewies, owner of Mewies & Co. in Leicestershire, which has an Authentic Beauty Concept refill bar that has proved popular with clients. Electric offers aluminium backbar bottles that can be refilled, and at Atelier in Derry, clients are also encouraged to bring back their bottles for filling. “We offer a 30 per cent discount when clients bring a clean, empty bottle back,” says founder Ronan Stewart. “They love the ethos.”

WORK WITH LOCAL SUPPLIERS AND PARTNERS

Switching to a local mindset was natural when Covid struck, and you should continue looking closer to home as you look to become more sustainable. From refreshments to regular events and furniture to flowers, stay plugged into your local community to see how you could collaborate. Keeping closer to home with suppliers helps to reduce emissions during transport. Robbie Purves and Iain Irvine, founders of Sonté Hair in Edinburgh, created a Sustainability Charter upon opening in 2020, which prioritised local partnerships and other green measures. “We can’t expect our clients to know the industry as well as we should,” they explain. “We must be aware of sustainable options and pass them on.”

INNER STRENGTH

STARTING A NEW SALON OR REVAMPING AN EXISTING ONE? THERE ARE TWO TRENDS SET TO DOMINATE SALON INTERIORS IN 2022…

Paradise Hair & Beauty

TREND #1 SUSTAIN MOMENTUM

48

048-049_Interiors.indd 1

The biggest trend right now is sustainability,” says David Donnellan, Xpert Professional managing director. “We’re seeing furniture that’s just raw wood, no laminate. It’s often flat-packed, which is both more sustainable and cost-effective.” He thinks this trend stems from youthful urgency as much as lockdown thinking. “Gen Z’s environmental outlook is driving this, not just in terms of attracting future business but respect for the influence that young people’s behaviour has on their families. Salons are being designed with a more youthful perspective and with the planet in mind.” Sustainability is also an offshoot of the broader interiors trend friluftsliv (literally ‘free air life’), a Scandinavian concept that’s all about the pleasures of nature. From a design standpoint, friluftsliv means bringing elements of the outdoors inside, from skylights to naked hardwood floors. Adding texture to a space with renewable natural materials adds both visual and tactile interest. Think of the textures that bring you joy outdoors and bring them indoors in window treatments crafted from renewables such as bamboo, reeds, and jute. For Romy Birdthistle, owner of Paradise Hair & Beauty, growing her team after her recent move to a Tralee premises made her realise how much energy she was using. “I invested in a complete LED swap, about 46 ceiling panels throughout the premises and all of the lights around the mirrors,” she says.

Minimalism has a lot in common with sustainability, resisting wasted space and potential pollutants. Clean lines and open spaces enhance the functionality and simple beauty of a room and can help maximise your use of natural light and fresh air. A dated assumption about minimalism is that it looks cold, overly frugal, or character-free. Nothing could be further from the truth, as Brushed Hair Salon and Blowdry Bar in Tullamore proves. “I wanted to create an elegant, rich and inviting space. I was inspired by clean modern lines and neutral but warm colour palettes,” says owner Orla Kidney. “Our laid-back luxury salon was designed by James and his team at Fititout.ie.” All her woodwork and styling mirrors, as well as her reception and retail area, were created specifically for her salon. A naturally industrial look can feel cosier than you’d think. When Christine Cunningham remodelled Passion Hair Salon in Clonee, Co. Meath, she worked with a local graffiti artist on dramatic, colourful wall art while keeping the rest of the space and furniture in graphic black and white. “I wanted a strong look everybody would talk about, as well as to bring a little urban cool into the salon. The graffiti creates a great contrast and shows a clean, minimalist salon needn’t be dull or look like other salons with a similar concept.” There are excellent specialists available to help you perfect your salon vision. Gainfort Salon Design partners with the world’s leading salon suppliers and designers to help you re-imagine the potential of your space. As the sole official distributor of OLYMP – a prestigious range of salon furniture from Germany – you can be sure that you’re standing out. It also distributes Italian favourite Maletti, and has recently transformed Ceira Lambert Hair Consultancy using its Sarah Collection from Sarah Lavoine.

THE NEW SALON CHECKLIST

TETSUYA ITO, CHIEF DESIGNER AT TAKARA BELMONT, SHARES VITAL QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

1.

Analyse the styles and characters of your salon’s location, and devise a strategy as to what people in the vicinity want to visit. Consider your neighbours and the area’s mood; restaurants and clothing shops are often trendsetters.

2.

5.

In Japan, there’s a trend towards salons offering more privacy postCovid, with more distance or dividers between stations, as well as personal rooms. It means they can offer a deeper consultation, which in turn means they’re able to charge more money for an elevated experience, even reducing chairs for a luxurious, well-spaced, premium feel.

Check out local competitors to ensure your interior’s originality. That way you can stand out from the crowd.

3.

The view through the front windows into your salon will be your best advertisement! It will keep sending your message to the public passing by.

4.

Think about what works on Instagram – a feature wall is a good idea, and the end wall from the windows or a reception area by the windows can be eyecatching places for it.

Open your eyes to a new vision of your salon space with the help of Gainfort Salon Design. The Gainfort team has partnered with the world’s leading salon suppliers and designers to help you reimagine the potential of your space. AN EYE FOR DETAIL Gainfort customers can be confident that every step of their design, planning and refit will be executed with close attention. Its experts are available in and out of working hours, and there is no project is too small, no design too grand. When Ceira Lambert approached Gainfort Salon Design, she knew she wanted a vibe that chimed with her exclusive clientele – but had no idea where to begin. Ceira Lambert Hair Consultancy is the number one choice for celebrity hair extensions – her client list includes Una Healy, Vogue Williams and Michelle Heaton. Her renowned extensions work needed an environment that reflected her expertise, while providing a luxurious escape for clients. But where to start? The design team at Gainfort put their heads together and drew up suggestions for Ceira, tailored specifically to her needs and wants. They opted for Maletti furniture, in particular the Sarah collection by Sarah Lavoine for Maletti. The dialogue between the materials, colour schemes and detail created the perfect look for Ceira’s business, with a sense of elegance, luxury and style that came together to create the perfect Instagrammable backdrop. “When I discovered Sarah Lavoine’s work, I realised I had met a designer with a refined but revolutionary, very Parisian approach,” explains Danilo Maletti, chairman of Maletti Group Furniture. “It’s a revolution made up of unusual colour combinations, sinuous lines and an aesthetic that makes the salon experience extremely enjoyable: a moment of relaxation in an elegant and welcoming environment where you can take care of yourself.” It was a match made in heaven – Ceira’s new salon space is going from strength to strength, attracting new customers and helping existing clients to remember why they fell in love with Ceira’s space and skills in the first place.

From the ground up

future

Bridget Haren

Fuel the

Bridget has been at the forefront of getting the apprenticeship programme running right from the start. “I was involved with the Consortium Steering Group in setting it up. At the time, I was president of the Hairdressing Council, and we went for a national programme from the beginning, trying to set a new standard and move the industry forward.” Bridget made her business a poster salon for the programme with little initial help. “At the beginning we had no financial support. I went into it with my three apprentices because I believed in what we were doing, but it’s great that employers now have that financial backing.” Starting the programme means altering workflow as well as cashflow. “You have to have a mentor for apprentices and you also have to pay them, as well as paying for classes and providing in-house training for the apprentices. A lot of courses take place in different parts of the country and the costs can really stack up. The grants don’t go a long way, but they do help.” Apprentices make up almost half of Bridget’s hair team. She currently maintains her own column while paying five full-time stylists and three apprentices. She sees it as an investment in the future of her business, as well as those of others. “People realise that salons are not only important to the community but we’re also building careers. We’re major contributors to the economy.”

Employer of the Year winner Bridget Haren talks about promoting apprentices in challenging times

IF, AS VICTORIANS believed, chamomile tea brings energy in adversity, cups must runneth over at Bridget Haren Hair & Beauty. The Ennis salon won the ‘Micro Enterprise’ category at the Generation Apprenticeship Employer of the Year awards in December. The staff includes three thriving apprentices that Bridget took on as the first Irish salon owner to fully engage with the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship (NHA), and they trained during lockdown. “I didn’t even know we were getting it before the announcement and the award came by post two days later. It was a lovely surprise,” she smiles. Speaking on behalf of SOLAS, an agency of the Department of Education, education minister Simon Harris called Bridget’s salon “an employer that demonstrated a fantastic ethos and commitment to continual learning for the benefit of their customers”.

Passion and contacts

Bridget’s desire to invest in people is, in part, about paying forward all that was invested in her. “I always knew I wanted to start my own business and began with a Start Your Own Business course with my Local Enterprise Office. That opened my eyes to taxes and bookkeeping, everything that goes into running a business. I teamed up with three salon owners from around Ireland – Valerie Finnegan Cahill, Sean Taaffe, and Wayne Lloyd – and we had a salon owners’ group for a couple of years that opened my eyes to things such as tracking my average bill, client counts, targets… the way the business should be run. We set a common standard and helped one another out with training. I might go to Cork or Kerry to teach up-styling, for example, or one of them would come to me for cutting. It’s helped me focus on my business.” She then began looking for education from outside Ireland. “I’m a great advocate for Alan Austin-Smith, The Fantastic Hairdresser. I’ve done many courses with him, as has everyone on my team, including the apprentices,” Bridget

won The Fantastic Hairdresser Award in 2015. “Within the salon I took on his Super Stylist programme with Antony Whitaker. When you end your apprenticeship at Bridget Haren you must do this programme before beginning as a stylist with us. Super Stylist is a nine-module programme that teaches you how to be the stylist you want to be, from your appearance to the kind of money you want to earn.” “Then, through Creative HEAD and The Industry, I was lucky enough to be paired with Lee Stafford for an Activator mentorship. He’s really helped me step back and look at changing processes to make my business more efficient. He’s helped me see the importance of establishing a ‘Q-mark’ standard, to ensure my business is always run with excellence, even when I’m not there.” “Bridget’s always been a trailblazer, interested in innovation and fresh ideas for both her team and the industry. Her professional standards are very high, ‘okay’ is never good enough,” says Valerie Finnegan Cahill, owner of Ikon Hair Cork and a long-time friend.

Education, education, education

Hairdressing is now on the CAO form and the apprenticeship’s CSG has plans to meet directly with career guidance counsellors. “Previously, schools might have pushed students that wanted to do hairdressing to get a degree or equivalent simply to have it behind them,” she says. Like many in the industry, this is down to a lack of understanding of just how complex a skillset hairdressing requires. “The apprentices are so knowledgeable. The science is almost at a level 9, it is quite tough and by no means an easy certificate to get,” she adds. “Mentoring has really opened my eyes to everything they go through. I do often wonder how they do it!” Lockdown made the programme harder to implement, but she is quick to sing the praises of NHA staff. “Claire O’ Brien [who teaches on the NHA in Limerick] is amazing. I was online with them right away, and they sent out mannequins and other supplies to help with training. Image Skillnet put on a wonderful course with Paul Davey for them. Training was extended to compensate for Covid inconveniences.” Bridget and her manager Michelle, are continuing their own education, participating in a pilot scheme that will see established hairdressers get formal recognition on a par with the NHA’s QQI Level 6 qualification.

54

052-054_Apprentices.indd 3

Apprentices are typically more active on – and more enthusiastic about – self-promotion on social media, which can cause friction with busy employers. Bridget avoids this by integrating her apprentices’ social output with that of the salon, and delegating it to outside help. “I did almost all of our social media myself for a long time, but I don’t wear enough make-up to be an influencer!” she laughs. “I have a digital marketing person, so I don’t feel constant pressure to post. We have a salon WhatsApp group for everyone’s videos, before and after photos and so on.” Her team’s Instagram handles include the salon’s name, and their accounts feature the logo. “We also have a 24-hour rule that means content goes out on the salon’s account before anyone on the team posts to their feeds. They’re all going to have their own page anyway, so I might as well brand it,” says Bridget, who also uses analytics to track how often staff are booked through their own Instagram accounts. “You have to let them grow and develop with you. I did competitions and got press coverage to get my name out when I started. This is how young stylists do it now and I enjoy seeing it.” Post-Covid, she sees her salon’s socials as a virtual storefront and her apprentices as key merchandisers and communicators. “I do believe that social media, when used in the correct way, can help both your apprentices and your business, while letting you stay true to your clients.”

THE LAST WORD ON… Mindfulness Mindshine

WANT MORE ON MINDFULNESS?

AS BUSINESSES ARE looking to embrace a sustainable approach, there’s also a growing importance post-pandemic on keeping our mental wellbeing healthy and sustainable, too. Mindfulness has become more than a buzzword; for many it’s an essential approach to everyday life to ensure balance and happiness. But what exactly is it? “Maybe you feel like it belongs in the ‘crystal healing’ camp and that’s not really your bag? Let me assure you that mindfulness can be very useful and be practiced by all, regardless of whether they want to line up rows of amethysts or not,” says clinical psychologist Dr Marianne Trent, host of The Aspiring Psychologist podcast. “Mindfulness is like the opposite of distraction. It is really absorbing yourself into the moment and can help improve mood and increase the ability to think about things which feel worrying or scary.” According to Dr Jess Braid, mindfulness can improve focus and attention, and has benefits in conditions such as ADHD. It has also been shown to enhance memory, comprehension and to improve work performance. “Regular mindfulness practices can reduce anxiety, depression and stress better than any medication. By being aware of, and making time for, how we feel, we become much better at regulating negative emotions,” she says. Want an easy place to start? There are plenty of apps to help you along your way, such as Mindshine, which describes itself as a ‘happiness coach in your pocket’ and has daily exercises that adapt to you to help make each day better. There are routines to choose from that include affirmations and meditation, and lots of exercises and coaching plans to work through on subjects such as stress

and resilience and productivity and performance. Caroline Sanderson – Most Wanted Business Thinker Legend, founder of Ego Hair Design and author of Mindset, Magic & Miracles – is convinced hairdressers and barbers need to embrace mindfulness due to the very nature of their jobs. “Being able to self-regulate and be emotionally aware is very helpful in our work life, as we deal with so many people and different energies. If we don’t take time to become aware of how we’re feeling, we can get anxious.” She explains that when we feel stress and anxiety, our hearts beat “in chaos rather than coherence”, and send messages to our brains that we’re in danger. The brain then switches to ‘flight or fight’ mode and releases stress hormones that affect certain body systems such as the immune system. “That’s why prolonged stress leads to health issues,” she says. One of the easiest mindful acts you can bring to your salon is breathing breaks, she advises. “Taking time out to have a quiet moment and breath in a slower, steady way helps your heart go back to coherence that sends the message of calm to the body that everything is safe and the functions can go back to normal,” she explains. “Don’t underestimate the power of breathing! We have a room at the back of the salon we use for meditation and mini breathing breaks.” Affirmations have also been powerful tools for many looking to embrace mindfulness, positive messages that put your mind at ease. “You can have these around the salon, in staff rooms, over the sink and so on, to help bring thoughts back to a positive place and as a reminder to speak to yourself in an empowering way to charge your energy rather than deplete it with negative inner dialogue,” adds Caroline.
