The edit THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY
GREEN BEAUTY SALES RISE
SALES OF CERTIFIED organic and natural beauty products increased by 13 per cent in 2016 to £61.2 million (€72.2 million), according to the Soil Association’s Organic Beauty and Wellbeing Market Report. The report revealed that the market has been driven by an increasing interest in health and wellbeing with 43 per cent of people surveyed saying the look for a certification logo when shopping for organic cosmetics. Salons are seeing this as an opportunity to attract a whole new clientele. “We have seen a massive increase in clients requesting organic ranges. It is a progressively increasing market and I believe everyone is more educated about organic produce across the board,” says Paul Davey, co-founder of Davey Davey salons in Dublin and founder of hairdressinglive.com. James McDonald, owner of Cheveu Studio in Bunclody, Co. Wexford, agrees, and has also seen benefits for his staff: “As the owner of a small salon I was looking to offer my guests an alternative salon experience. I find the organic option to be much kinder than the more chemical products, both for guests and my staff, who work with these products on a daily basis.” As sustainability becomes more important, so does the trend for simplicity and transparency. The Soil Association’s report noted key consumer beauty trends for 2017 as more people favour ingredients from food or plant sources that are easier to identify and a higher level of scrutiny of beauty products’ ethical and sustainable sourcing credentials. Indeed, the Soil Association has launched a Campaign For Clarity, following the finding that 76 per cent of consumers felt misled by the labelling of beauty products as ‘organic’.

Shine on
IT WAS TIME to party as more than 110 hairdressers from seven salons turned out to the House of Colour Salon of the Year Awards. The evening took place at the Alexander Hotel in Dublin, where guests were treated to a three-course meal with champagne, while anticipating the awards to come. A review of the year highlighted the salon group’s achievements and identified upcoming trends for the coming seasons. House of Colour co-founder David Campbell hosted, and the event saw the Charlestown salon win Salon of the Year (pictured above) for the fourth time, as well as taking three other awards. Senita Burke and Abbey Blake were announced winners of the 12-month scholarship to join the creative team, and the annual Paul Byrne memorial award went to Emma Monaghan, director of the Charlestown salon.
ZEBA FUNDRAISES FOR TEMPLE STREET HOSPITAL
STYLISTS AT THE FOUR Zeba salons offered their services for free for a day to raise money for the cleft lip and palate department at Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin. The day also included bundles of spot prizes and a raffle, and raised €8,500. Angie Dromgoole (pictured inset, second from right), director of Zeba Hairdressing, said: “We are delighted to host another fundraising event in aid of a cause which is close to our hearts.”

THE BUSINESS EDIT HIS AND HERS IS GENDER-NEUTRAL PRICING THE FUTURE? CLIENTS ARE MORE CREATIVE with their hair than ever before, and that can mean rejecting traditional gender-specific trends in favour of more fluid looks. Kristen Stewart recently took the plunge and opted for a bleach blonde buzzcut, while Jared Leto is the poster boy for gorgeous long waves. So, when clients stop seeing hairstyles as being restricted to men or women, is it time that salon owners stop charging them within these narrow limits too? RoCo in Derry will be one of the first salons on the island of Ireland to offer gender neutral prices based solely on the length of hair and service provided, rather than ladies or mens services. Ronan Stewart, co-founder of RoCo, believes that it is “massively outdated” to have a policy of charging based on gender. “We believe that introducing one generic pricing

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A HAIRDRESSER? My mum always knew I was going to be a hairdresser because I was always playing with hair when I was little. I just want to make people look and feel fabulous – if someone leaves the salon after they’ve seen me and they’re really happy, then that makes me really happy. I love how hair can help someone to show off their personality.
system will help us to promote fairness and equality across our salon,” he says. Instead, the prices charged will reflect the amount of time taken for styling, the skills required and the products used. Gender neutral pricing has taken off in the UK, led by Not Another Salon owner Sophia Hilton in East London. “I’ve got girls with skinheads and boys with hair down to their backsides so to me, it’s clear, it should be pricing on the job – not what’s in their pants,” she explains. This will also help clients feel more comfortable in the salon. “We’ve got a growing number of transgender, transsexual and gender-fluid clients so the industry needs to be in tune with this,” says Sophia. “In order to be a true ‘no judgement’ company, I have analysed every part of what we do to help lead a future generation who are trying to find their way in an oldfashioned world.” “We believe this structure is much more inclusive and will help provide an even more welcoming and relaxing experience for all of our valued clients,” says Conor Grant, co-founder of RoCo. “Our home city is well known in leading the way in so many aspects of life which promote respect, equality and diversity, and we see our business model as adopting similar principles to avoid discrimination in any form.” However, most salons still hold on to conventional pricing. “Because of the competition from barber shops in the local area, we can’t charge more than €10 to €30 for our men’s services,” says Niamh Coady, manager at Lynda Maher Hair Studio in Carlow, which has distinct men’s and women’s price lists. “However, we feel that we are still benefitting the salon by offering both male and female hairdressing services.” It is true that traditionally women have been willing to pay more, but as gender norms are broken down, we may be about to see a new way of pricing rolling out across salons.
HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR? I won Best Bridal Image at the Best of the Best competition in 2015. I’m part of the bridal team in the salon, and I’ve worked on photoshoots for Xposé and Confetti magazines – I like wedding hair because you’re part of someone’s special day. I also helped make the fantasy hair pieces for the Alternative Hair Show, and I am one of five selected for the Intercoiffure Ireland
Guillaume Team, so I’m being trained by top stylists. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS? I’d just like to be an excellent hairdresser – it would be amazing to run my own salon. I’d have my own team and keep entering competitions. Hairdressers get bored easily, so I’ll always keep learning about new techniques and trends I can bring to the salon.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG? I’m obsessed with the Kardashians so my absolute dream job would be to be their personal stylist. I would love to travel the world doing their hair. Kim doesn’t need to colour her hair as it’s lovely and dark, but it’s always down and wavy. I would give her different styles – cool up-dos or some curls to make it a bit more exciting.

LIFE LESSONS
CHRISTINE O ̓ SULLIVAN, OWNER, CREATION HAIR & BEAUTY STUDIO, CORK
Believe you can, and follow your dreams. We all have a dream in life, from the youngest team member to our senior stylists and the boss. If you believe that you can make this dream possible, you can and you will. Education is the key. Remember that you are amazing at what you do. Invest in yourself and your team, educate them. It’s important to be continually inspired so you can bring fresh, new ideas and techniques back to the salon and to the client. Never stop learning. To learn isn’t all always about education. We are coming out of a hard-hit recession, salons are busy and businesses are recruiting again. Learning to survive in some of the hardest times integral to success. It teaches you how to keep your staff happy and clients booked in. Stay in the know. Social media is constantly giving clients new ideas and inspiration, so it’s important for stylists of all levels to be at the top of their game. Be aware of new trends and how achieve these looks – educated stylists will be able to advise clients while giving them realistic expectations. It’s essential to be honest with your client as the latest trend may not directly translate to their hair, but it’s about making it work for them. Love your job. Everyone has that one area and skill set in their hairdressing or barbering career that they love the most, whether it is cutting, colouring, up-styling and so on. Sell it, make it your speciality. If this is where you shine and smile most, then this is what makes you love your job. Use it to your advantage and become brilliant.

SHARING THE SECRETS OF SUCCESS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS
THE EXPERT WAY JENNY BYRNE, OWNER OF YOU’RE GORGEOUS SALONS, USES EDUCATION TO KEEP AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE HAIR INDUSTRY
FAST PACE Jenny Byrne has always done things differently – she is the only one in her family who didn’t go into the business of making fireplaces. Instead, she turned to the wonderful world of hair. “I wanted to do something different, something that was sociable, fun and above all, creative,” she explains. The industry she has fallen in love with is always changing, which means she and her team at You’re Gorgeous in Duleek and Stamullen in County Meath have to stay educated in order to keep up. That’s why she ensures each member of staff takes five courses a year with leading educators ALFAPARF Milano. “Things change so fast, and the hairdressing industry involves such a wide range of skills. You can tread water or you can decide to go forward,” she says.
TOP SKILLS Jenny’s team has been with ALFAPARF Milano for three years. “Working with
ALFAPARF Milano is an amazing opportunity – you can study styling and business, so it’s a win-win situation for a salon owner.” Two of her stylists have just completed their Colour Master courses, with another just starting. “The courses are so scientific – the knowledge they come out with is amazing! They become more confident too and I know they can come back to the salon and educate the team on what they’ve learned,” she explains. Jenny has also been wowed by ALFAPARF Milano’s Next Generation Cutting programme.
BOOMING BUSINESS Through participating in ALFAPARF Milano’s business courses, Jenny has learned from hair
legend Alan Austin-Smith, and found the experience invaluable. “After doing the Business Masters course, I mapped out every section of my business. This helped me think about it as a whole.” She also learned how to attract five-star clients – those who have a perfect colour, cut, treatment, take home products and plan for revisits. And with ALFAPARF Milano’s yearly international trips, Jenny has been able to motivate her staff and educate them too. “We went to Sicily for four days last year – it was the perfect reward for all the hard work”.
FACT FILE ★ Jenny Byrne has worked in the hair industry for 28 years and opened her first salon, in Co. Dublin, aged 21 ★ She launched You’re Gorgeous in Duleek, Co. Meath in 2006 ★ Her second salon was opened in Stamullen, Co. Meath in 2008 ★ The team has been partnered with ALFAPARF Milano for 3 years and employs 8 stylists and 4 future professionals ★ The salon team has won four Drogheda Chamber Awards for best customer care and retail

It’s no longer simply about fixing a colour that has gone wrong, it’s also about reviving hair that’s dull and uniform, and giving it a new radiance with touches of shine and light; the same way a make-up artist can make a woman’s skin tone appear more beautiful. Inspired by subtle make-up techniques, #colorcorrection is an ultra-personalised colour service aimed at answering the most desired hair needs. This is why your clients are going to love these three new #colorcorrection services from L’Oréal Professionnel!

Inside story LLOYDS WALK-IN SALON, WATERFORD
Danielle Kennedy, owner of the Lloyds salon group, moved her walk-in salon to the 5,000 square foot unit next door in Waterford after three years of dreaming and planning the interiors. “I’m aware how intimidating salons can be, so I wanted to go against the norm. Muted tones help ensure clients feel like the star of the show,” she explains. Danielle realised that as a walk-in only salon, she would have to make the waiting area a priority. “The self-service coffee bar was the first thing we decided we wanted. This has opened our salon up to a whole new market – we are flooded with business people that lead very busy lives who are able to maximise their time while getting their hair done.” Each styling station has been made to feel private, and months of research has got the lighting as close to natural as possible, so colours look accurate. And despite being in a large building, the salon has installed a revolutionary new air conditioning and water heating system. “It takes the hot air expelled by the hair dryers and uses it to heat the water,” Danielle says. “The energy saving has been huge!”

Paul Mitchell
THERE’S PLENTY of business at Salon Smart, but at night creativity comes to the fore. The Paul Mitchell artistic educators kicked off the evening’s entertainment with a model presentation, a stunning sequence that showcased the beauty and punch of the brand’s POP XG colour – and the audience could see the striking results at close hand. A sumptuous three-course dinner followed before the audience settled down to enjoy a further exploration of colour in our COLOUR. CREATIVITY. CONVERSATION. LIVE! segment. L’Oréal Professionnel artists Katie Allan (Charles Worthington salons), MJ Farmer (Rush Hair), Jack Howard (Paul Edmonds London) and Paul Dennison (Ken Picton Salon) took to the stage in turns to discuss the colour work on their chosen model, including the techniques and applications they’d used, all hosted by education director Darren Oram. Delectable!

“IF YOU DON’T LOVE THE PLACE YOU GO EVERYDAY AND THE PEOPLE YOU SEE, YOU’LL GIVE UP ON THE INSIDE. IT WOULD BE LIKE BEING IN A PRISON THAT YOU BUILT” SOPHIA HILTON
THE FOUNDER of Not Another Salon and winner of 2016 Most Wanted Best Salon Experience, Sophia explained how everything was built on a foundation of trust, and that while that opened her up to potential hurt, she was ready for it. Two of her golden rules? To look after her own mental health (because if you don’t, there’s a trickledown effect on your staff) and to educate herself through reading and YouTube videos.
“STOP TRYING TO BE FUCKING FAMOUS. MAKE SURE THEY’RE GOOD AT A JOB FIRST AND THE REST FOLLOWS” KY WILSON
FOUNDER OF the The Social and 2016 It List Entrepreneur, Ky used his empty column time cutting people’s hair on the streets, so it’s no surprise he eschews complacency. His two salons – in revamped buildings in London and the Lake District – highlighted that there’s no longer just one right way to run a salon. In London, he roped friends into helping him design something different, such as custom-made mirrors he now retails to clients.
STAGE
Salon Smart 2017 was a cocktail of inspiration and knowledge, ranging from the innovative and unique to the experienced and practical. We couldn’t get enough!
“WE’VE TRIED TO BUILD A BRAND, NOT A PERSON” MARK WOOLLEY
WITH SIX SALONS, a studio, education and products, 2016 Most Wanted Business Thinker Mark showed how he has taken inspiration from brands such as Soho House and Virgin for his 10-year-old brand, Electric. With a new Electric Hub being built to house his HQ, lab, a studio and education, and with a new salon and academy set to launch in Asia this summer, Mark still has plenty of buzz powering his brand and team.
“LIDL SHELF STACKERS EARN MORE THAN A LOT OF HAIRDRESSERS AND THAT MAKES ME FEEL ASHAMED. WE HAVE TO CHANGE THIS” KEN WEST
Director of 3•6•5, Ken had started a focus on young talent at last year’s Salon Smart, asking salons where had all the 16 year olds gone… and did you actually need them? He implored salons this year to think differently and act differently – such as employing older apprentices and to consider what you want your apprentices doing – learning hands on with hair, or doing menial tasks like sweeping up.

“I WANT TO CHANGE CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR. THE CLIENT ISN’T DRIVEN BY MONEY BUT BY EXPERIENCE” MATTHEW SOCKALINGUM
OWNER OF the salon chain, Matthew Luke Professional, Matthew opened with the insight that if 100 women were given £100 each to spend on beauty, they would choose make-up first and hair last. One way he has tried to change how clients spend in the salon is introduce the Blow Dry Pass (winner of the 2016 Most Wanted Award for Innovation), which sees clients commit to £40 (€47) a month for unlimited blow-drys. It increases retail and is regular income.
STARS
MOVE WITH THE TIMES
THE MANAGING DIRECTOR of Salon Success, Simon Tickler started the morning with everyone on their feet doing a little tai chi (and in the process patting everyone on the back!). “As the owners of your businesses, you probably don’t get told enough that you’re a genius leader, you need to congratulate yourself!” he said. But Simon also stressed that salons needed to be committed to what they do differently, and do it better. Monica Teodoro, general manager of L’Oréal Professionnel, provided some fascinating insights into changing consumer behaviours. “There are 34 billion selfies a year, making clients more aware and more discerning than ever,” she said. The decline in salon visits is mainly down to a fall in the 45+ age group of women and Monica argued these are your most valuable clients.
CHARLES IN CHARGE
“WE’RE HUMAN BEINGS, NOT HUMAN DOINGS” TOBY DICKER
TURNING THE SPOTLIGHT onto retention, The Chapel’s Toby joked how he was making himself gradually unemployed by putting key tasks in the hands of his trusted staff, helping focus on employees’ creativity and satisfaction to encourage loyalty. The Chapel charges by time rather than service, meaning that staff can earn just as much seeing fewer people but for longer appointments, staying with them from consultation through to finish. It means better client as well as staff retention.

Celebrating three decades in business, hairdressing legend Charles Worthington MBE took us on an incredible trip down memory lane. He explained that he had planned on being an architect, but after modelling for Tim Hartley at Sassoon he found the world of hair to be irresistable. Charles was one of the first stylists to combine salon work with session styling for London Fashion Week, thanks to client Betty Jackson. While the success of his salon brand, synonymous with amazing service and beautiful hair, Charles puts down to training that sees communications up there alongside the craft of hair. His key advice? “Always remember the client is king, and don’t take anyone for granted.”

25/04/2017 11:07
LET’S WORKSHOP IT! ACT LIKE THE EXPERT YOU ARE
GAVIN HOARE, salon manager at Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, which last year enjoyed a turnover of £5.5 million (€6.5million), looked at why customers leave and how to make sure they stay with you. He revealed that 78 per cent of clients who leave make that choice because they perceive an attitude of indifference in the service they receive within the salon. This clearly needs to change. The way to do this is through understanding and meeting their needs, Gavin argued. From making clients feel truly welcome to giving them a sense of indulgence and following up their appointments, offering a professional service and professional advice can make all the difference.
TURN UP THE VOLUME THIS INTERACTIVE session with the Paul Mitchell retail team looked at maximising productivity in relation to stock, communication and merchandising. Led by (pictured above, from left to right): Salon Success business development manager John Hurine, business consultant Susan Nicol and regional sales manager Nickey Televantou, the workshop was designed to challenge the audience to make back in sales what they spent on their Salon Smart ticket and they walked away feeling satisfied as the team set out the goals they need to reach to make this happen (never forget that stock = profit!).

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
EVERY HARD-WORKING business head needs time to refuel, and at Salon Smart’s Working Lunch guests had the opportunity to fuel their bodies and their minds with a perfect combination of refreshments and business-building inspiration! There was education and coaching from 3•6•5; on-trend colour from Kenra Professional (we love Guy Tang’s Metallics!); digital design and marketing ideas thanks to Salon Guru and lots of technology updates to streamline your salon and give you the control you need with Salon iQ and Treatwell. Want some new ideas to add to your salon’s choice of services and boost that backwash experience? Guests could check out New CID Cosmetics, Remi Cachet, High Definition and New Era (those Ecoheads and HeadBeds for the backwash are genius!). There was brilliant retail to help boost that bill (and illustrate that you’re an expert in your field) with ColorProof, Paul Mitchell, Dafni straightening brushes, Oway and Viviscal Professional, while L’Oréal Professionnel had the client journey all mapped out. You could be sure this lunch was not for wimps.

Go further than cut and colour to boost your client loyalty and revenue – get to grips with innovative extras
IT’S NO SECRET that the happier a client is when they leave your salon, the more likely they are to come back; so it makes sense to offer them as much as possible, from colour protection to luxurious treatments and a perfectly tailored aftercare plan. But clients can be wary of adding extra services to an appointment as they worry about cost and time. How can you make sure they know they’re getting value? It begins with educating your team so they can talk with confidence, says Laura Cathcart, stylist and colour specialist at Zeba Hairdressing, Dublin. “We are committed to knowing as much as we can about new products, like Smartbond from L’Oréal Professionnel, which makes our jobs that bit easier when approaching clients,” she says. “We have in-salon training days so that all staff members are up to date on the important information. Then, once you can provide a clear and informative consultation, Smartbond sells itself.”
38
38-40_Extras Ireland.indd 1
Once you have started that conversation, you can get into the specifics of various services in a straightforward way and show the practical benefits to clients. Steve Turner of Salon 6 and director of MyHairdressers. com, explains: “Smoothing treatments like The First Shampoo reduce curl and frizz so when the client does their hair at home, it’s far quicker and they get a better result. If you tell a client they can save 15 to 20 minutes every day, the benefit far outweighs the cost of the treatment.” And it’s worth getting potential new clients in to the salon, to see results for themselves. “The best way to start your smoothing business is a client awareness night, where you invite your most challenged clients and ask one of them to be the model,” says Peter Tobolski, managing director for Fresh Approach, distributor of Nanokeratin System. “Then make sure you have images of all your before and after looks.”

Adding a smoothing service to your menu is a no-brainer. Nanokeratin System has a host of treatments to choose from to ensure there is the perfect smoothing system for every client in your chair. It has launched nanoSmooth pure – available for natural, coloured and blonde hair, it creates an outer foundation on hair to protect it from damage while making hair super sleek. The First Shampoo uses five amino acids which, when left on the hair for 20 minutes, penetrate into the hair shaft and react together to change the molecular structure of the hair bond when activated by heat. The results leave the hair not only straight and de-frizzed, but in great condition too, and it’s the ‘first’ to be applied as just a shampoo. It cuts down the process time dramatically, can last up to three months and you can also do about 20 applications with each bottle.

Smoothing services
Nanokeratin System
According to research by L’Oréal Professionnel, 59 per cent of the population see damage as a key hair concern. This is reflected in the explosion of colour additives in the last year, with a wide variety of brands promising to make colour safer and more effective. Amazing colour is only amazing if the hair remains in good condition, so suggest that your colour clients make the upgrade. The first to market, Olaplex created huge attention when it launched, and has helped clients understand what colour additives can actually do (that Kim Kardashian mention on social media didn’t hurt, either). It’s a three-step service that locates breakage and ‘fixes it’. The first step is mixed with colour to minimise damage as it happens, the second perfects hair quality and the third is taken home. L’Oréal Professionnel’s Smartbond protects hair bonds during the colouring process, and it also keeps the hair fibre strong. It has created a service menu to help salons inject its magic into a number of options. Montibello’s Silaplex not only adds strength to hair during chemical processes, it also gives an injection of shine and suppleness – use it during colouring, or during waving or straightening treatments. And Fibreplex from Schwarzkopf Professional interlinks with hair fibres to keep it intact and supple with bold colour. So how much difference do additives make to the till? ASP Vitaplex can be used during colouring and lightening to reduce damage while boosting colour – if one stylist offers it as an add-on for €20 and does just five clients a week, you could see an extra €3,060 coming into your salon a year.

Prescriptive treatments There’s plenty more on offer to give clients customised hair solutions. The Kérastase Fusiodose ritual begins with a hair and scalp profiling session before the stylist creates the perfect treatment blend. Hair can be plumped, reconstructed or softened and it gets to work in just five minutes. System Professional EnergyCode Mapping from Wella Professionals is also tailored to each client; it begins with a consultation to fully understand the hair, before the treatments begin. And with more than 50 different take-home products, you can create a bespoke aftercare plan, too.

THE HOTTEST EVENTS AROUND – GET YOURSELF SCENE!
CROKE PARK SWAPPED headguards for hair styles and grubby boots for glamour as the stadium filled with stylists taking part in the IHF Championships. The event saw Ireland’s top hairdressers and trainees take to the floor to style their way to success in front of a panel of eagle-eyed judges. Spectators were amazed by the creations that came about in a matter of minutes – there were bright colours, up-dos, super-precise barbering and much more. When evening arrived, House of Colour director David Campbell took to the stage to host the IHF Championship Awards, as nervous hairdressers waited in anticipation. The winners took their bows, and the celebrations culminated in Gemma Crossan being crowned IHF Irish Hairdresser of the Year, for 2017.

Gary Hooker and Michael Young
Boogie NIGHTS
In the plush setting of the Ballsbridge Hotel in Dublin, Gary Hooker and Michael Young stepped back in time to find a ’70s flavour of inspiration for a very modern launch – the revamped BlondeMe colour range from Schwarzkopf Professional. With authentic fashion accessories sourced especially for the occasion, Hooker & Young illustrated their love of wearable, client-friendly colour and styling with a nod to the editorial. The variety on show was impressive, from honey-glazed blondes to stunning silvers, all delivered with that ’70s panache (think Jerry Hall at the height of her Roxy Music collaboration). The lads kept everyone amused too, with plenty of onstage banter as their models showed off the looks.

IN THE
raw THE MATRIX TEAM jetted off to the sunny island of Tenerife in the Canaries for its annual conference. The Hard Rock Hotel was the base for the three-day event and the conference began with an overview of the previous year’s success, and targets for the future. Then it was time to unveil the new RAW range, a luxurious collection of three premium shampoos and conditioners inspired by nature. Guests, including Matrix Artistic Team members Aidan Fitzgerald of Aidan Fitzgerald Hair Salon and Nicole O’Gorman of Revas Spa, were treated to a poolside dinner to unwind and enjoy the gorgeous setting as the sun went down. The next day delegates gathered to learn about the “Hair Colour is the New Make-up” initiative, get to know the RAW range in more depth and the #LIVERAW challenge, which encourages salons to go green and get healthy. After taking a trip on a catamaran to watch whales, it was time to suit up for the James Bondthemed gala dinner. Awards were handed out to celebrate Matrix artists, key team members and distributors before partying long into the night.
