Just when you thought Wella Professionals’ ILLUMINA COLOR couldn’t get any better, it reveals the A/W13 New Naturals collection
WellaAW.indd 3
Whether it’s natural or artificial, we are all drawn towards the power of light. ILLUMINA COLOR by Wella Professionals recognises this and has elevated light to its fullest, revealing previously unseen potential in hair. It’s all thanks to patented Microlight technology, which protects the cuticles to maintain their clarity, allowing light to pass through and illuminating every tone from within in any light. Featuring superior light reflection and hair protection,* ILLUMINA COLOR is now giving colourists even more opportunities with the introduction of five new luminous, permanent shades. Following the A/W13 trend for subtle, more natural colours, the new five shades are understated and sophisticated. Inspired by Allegra from the Wella Professionals’ Soloist collection, the famous five are: Blushing naturals: peach, apricot and delicate strawberry; Smokey naturals: fresh, smooth and softly subtle; Deep naturals: sleek and polished; and Sheer naturals: cascading vanilla and champagne tones.

Introduce ILLUMINA COLOR premium services onto your salon menu and watch your revenue grow and grow!

20/9/13 10:12:40
Going up ILLUMINA COLOR by Wella Professionals is more than just a colour service; it gives you the opportunity to grow your salon revenue by upgrading your clients. Wella Professionals believes in ILLUMINA COLOR so much that it recommends that you charge an extra 15 per cent for these services than your standard permanent colour service. While a price hike can seem a little daunting – no one wants to feel like they’re alienating clients – ILLUMINA COLOR is worth it, not just because of the amazing, naturallooking colour results, but three out of four clients who have tried it come back asking for it again.* What’s more, stylists say that after using ILLUMINA COLOR, their client’s hair feels like virgin or non-coloured hair* – something that money really can’t buy!

hello...
Most people would never dream of cutting their own hair. So why are so many women under the impression that a box of at-home hair colour, plucked off the shelf at their local supermarket or chemist, is just as good as a professional service? It might feel like you’re fighting a losing battle, but in Get Your Colour On from page 44, we talk to the business owners and colourists who are facing up to that reality, fighting back and coaxing DIY enthusiasts back into the salon. And if you think they’ve done so by going for the hard sell, you’d be mistaken! From talking clients through the process to being bang-upto-date on the latest products, education is the key to their success. By injecting a bit of fresh thinking into the way you approach colour in your salon, you can make a world of difference. Not just to your clients, but to your bottom line, too.

It began with 12, but in the end only one hairdressing hopeful could be crowned the winner – Sean O’Reilly is the first ever House of Colour Hair Apprentice. The competition, which launched back in June and was led by manager Marcus Cowzer, saw 12 beginners with little or no hairdressing experience battle it out in a series of intensive weekly tasks to win a nine-month City & Guilds Foundation course at the House of Colour Academy. Having only worked parttime in a salon before, Sean will now start his diploma this autumn and take the next step to becoming a full-time stylist.

lessons
dylan bradshaw owner of dylan bradshaw I got into hairdressing purely by accident. I wasn’t getting on very well in school so my mum brought me to her hairdresser in Peter Mark in Dun Laoghaire shopping centre when I was 16 and asked them to give me a job. I wasn’t interested until I saw how many girls worked there!
If you want to succeed you can’t be afraid of hard work and sacrifice. So many people want the glory but aren’t prepared to work for it. It’s important for parents to instill a good work ethic in kids and to let them know that sometimes you have to give up things like your social life to get ahead.
I have a love/hate relationship with social media. It’s not about how many likes you get or followers you have. Social media is useful, but the best publicity is a client leaving your salon with a beautifully executed haircut.

Inside story Yourells, Moycullen, Co. Galway Following on from the success of their Eyre Square salon, Yourells Moycullen is the latest venture from salon owners Anna Forde and Carol Joyce. Situated just outside Galway city, the salon is pared-back elegance at its best. A palette of cool blues, dark wooden hues and the effortless mix of mid-20th century and ultra-modern furniture give the salon an almost minimalist feel while somehow managing to seem cosy and inviting at the same time. We love the oversized tan leather armchairs for colour clients, the quirky lighting fixtures, the spa-inspired backwash area and the vintage Vogue covers that adorn the reception area.

Since IGORA ROYAL was revamped, clients and colourists have fallen in love with it all over again. But how has it managed to achieve so much in such a short space of time? “One of the most impressive assets of the new IGORA ROYAL is its High Definition technology, which delivers 100 per cent true colour results,” says Lesley Lawson, global colour ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional. “I had the chance to work with the new IGORA ROYAL during the Essential Looks shoot. The results speak for themselves: state-of-the-art colours as well as outstanding vibrancy on coppers and violets lets my creativity run free.” But it’s not just results that have put this range on the throne; another reason for its success comes down to Schwarzkopf Professional’s salon support. Its Color app, Colour Tool Box and personalised points of sale are available to all of its salons, equipping them with everything they need to make the most of the range. The easy-to-use Color app helps to offer the best colour consultation possible. It’s a state-of-the-art tool that provides consultation steps, formulas and latest inspirations. Meanwhile, Schwarzkopf Professional’s business Colour Tool Box is an amazing backup support and comes in the form of ready-made guides. The guides support five key salon objectives: reach new clients, increase frequency of visits, build loyalty, provide premium services and sell products.

“Having the support from Schwarzkopf Professional in the Colour Tool Box and the Color app in our three salons is great. The team love it and use it not only for colour services but also to promote colour to non-colour clients, which has helped grow this part of our business across the group”
“We love using Igora Royal as it’s a true-to-tone colour that’s kind to the hair and scalp with a high gloss finish. We also have extensive technical support behind us from Schwarzkopf Professional” Martine Broggy, The Natural Hair Company

Toni Mascolo
Glam wellies and denim cut-offs were the order of the day at Toni&Guy’s 50th anniversary held at Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire, UK, and if the celebrations proved anything, it was that the brand is 50-yearsyoung. In the words of co-founder Toni Mascolo: “It’s only just begun.” The event saw 4,000 hair stylists, salon owners and guests take over the house’s grounds for a day of fun, food, music and, of course, inspirational hair shows. Guests enjoyed fairground rides and pampering pop-ups including Essie, ghd and label.m, before heading into the main tent where designer Giles Deacon was on the decks to provide the soundtrack to the evening. Beatboxer Beardyman and rapper Iggy Azalea wowed the audience, which then settled down to see the brand’s 50/50 collection. Fashion presentations from Giles and JeanPierre Braganza followed, before flag bearers from Toni&Guy salons around the world took to the stage. With the hair shows over, headliner Labrinth ensured the party kept going into the early hours.

When in
Vegas…
Stephanie Kocielski
What do you get when 3,500 hairdressers descend on one of Las Vegas’s most iconic hotels? A two-day party that would make The Hangover gang’s antics look tame. Yes, it could only be Paul Mitchell’s The Gathering 2013. Held at Caesars Palace, the annual event saw hairdressers from 25 countries gather for two days of seminars, workshops and inspirational hair shows. The brand’s co-founder John Paul DeJoria kicked off the event in style, riding onto the stage on a motorbike, before co-owner Angus Mitchell and global artistic director Robert Cromeans introduced three shows that took in everything from colour to cutting to styling. It was then on to a day of learning with 18 classes altogether, followed by a show-stopping finale that encompassed the brand’s passion for hair as well as fun, friendship and family. The highlight was seeing creative director for John Paul Mitchell Systems, Takashi, stretching his limbs to cut and style the hair of a stiltwearing model! TWEET IT Follow the Creative

THE BIG IDEA
Express yourself
Preen
From colouring services to make-up applications, ‘express’ seem to be the word of the moment, so when salon owners Katherine Sweeney and John Cheese were formulating their own express menu at Preen, they knew they’d have to think of a way to stand out from the crowd. Aimed at the time-conscious client who needs to be ready in less than an hour, their express appointments set aside 30 minutes for hair and 30 minutes for make-up. They’ve also created a quick and easy reference point for clients who don’t have a clear vision of what they want. For their updo menu, which comprises five different ’dos –Top Knot, Showpony, Halo-Brain, Bedhive and Fishtail – the pair has collaborated with of-the-moment fashion illustrator Holly Shortall to illustrate each look; and the results are as innovative as they are informative. Cool, quirky and totally unique!

Get your colour on
Home colouring is winning the popularity contest and it’s time for colourists to fight back. You’ve got the skills and products — now discover how you can turn a DIY colourist into a loyal salon client
We’ve become a nation of DIY colour addicts with more women opting for the bottle over the professional. According to a survey commissioned by Euromonitor in 2012, the recent economic downturn has been attributed for the rise in hair colour sales as people dye their hair at home in a bid to save money. But with the majority of Irish women colouring regularly, it’s also a fall-back excuse for salons facing fewer colour appointments. It’s time to take action and entice home colourers into your salon. It starts with the consultation, according to Christy Blake, Ireland education manager for Joico. She advises that every salon should have at least one member of staff that specialises in colour – someone who can explain in plain English what they think a client should have and why. For this to happen, the colourist needs to have a thorough understanding of what it is that they’re offering – education is key. This is something L’Oréal Professionnel educator and salon owner Dylan Bradshaw feels passionately about. “What clients need to understand is that we’re not trying to sell to them. When a client comes in we ask them how we can improve their hair, how their hair suits their lifestyle and how often they can maintain their cut and colour,” he reveals. The ability to personalise the service is vital, as Olive Tucker-Lee from House of Colour, explains: ‘The consultation is the most important time during a client’s hair appointment as it’s the only time you can really find out what their intentions are and how much they can afford. I like to formulate a plan with clients where we discuss objectives and how we to achieve them through cut and colour.” The next step is to make sure your prices and information on your colour services is clear. “Price is a huge factor so I always give them the quote before we start colouring,” Olive adds. “If you give your clients as much information as possible, they’ll be able to
Creative Head Ireland
p44-45_Colour Feature_GW2.indd 3
make a better decision and will often opt for a bespoke colouring service over a DIY colour.” Flexibility and time saved are often cited as the biggest advantages to home colouring, so it’s your job to educate clients who are tempted by the box that it can end up costing them more in the long run. “There’s a saying that if you buy cheap you buy twice,” Dylan Bradshaw says. Bryan Murphy, artistic director at Kazumi Hair in Dublin, agrees: “You can buy a pair of scissors in the chemist without instructions on how to cut hair, but so many people think they can colour their hair themselves and get the same results as professional hair colour. So many people come into the salon and need corrective colour services, which ends up costing them more money in the long run.” So what are the innovative new techniques that you can wow your clients with? From Wella Professionals’ latest service, Color.id, to L’Oréal Professionnel’s ammonia-free INOA, there is a range of technologically advanced salon colours on the market – but many clients are still unaware that they exist and how they can benefit from them. “Most clients have no idea about the range of colours out there or the innovations in colour technology,” Sara Gondek from Hair Republic Galway explains. “They don’t know that things like Color.id or glossing treatments even exist so it’s vital to talk them through the options.” Promotions are also an effective way of attracting new customers, but make sure you offer them in a way that doesn’t cheapen the service. “So many clients are willing to spend money on products yet they ruin their hair with DIY colouring kits. We’ve found that complimentary treatments or products act as an incentive to get them into the salon,” Marian Dineen of Marian Dineen Hair Studio Sligo explains. “It’s upselling rather than underselling your skill and service.” The battle against the bottle is tough. But with staff education, the right attitude and innovative colouring techniques, you can get those clients back in the arms of the professionals.

Shoots
A group of stylists were given the chance to create their own LA story thanks to Sebastian Professional. Here’s how they got on… Like most things in Los Angeles, it all began with a photoshoot. Held at the Sebastian Professional studios and mentored by UK creative style artist for Sebastian Professional, Sean Dawson, 11 stylists flew in to California for the shoot of a lifetime. The team were first set the task of finding and casting the right models, before they were allowed to let their creativity loose to create the final hair looks. Each stylist got the chance to produce some fantastic shots for their portfolio, with Lacey Bastable of Wow being awarded Overall Superstar of the event and Christine Smith of Christine Smith Hairdressing taking home a Super Stylist award. “Being part of the Sebastian Professional trip to LA was incredible,” says Lacey Bastable. “We are all so pleased with the results and can’t wait to share what we learnt and saw back in the salon.” Adds Sean: “Working with a team of energetic and creative hairdressers in the heartland of Sebastian Professional has been really special. The end looks really are fearless and inspiring.”

Risky business
self-belief and a product people want – that’s the key to success, says Tangle Teezer’s Shaun Pulfrey As a person I’m not naturally a risk-taker – I always wait for the walk sign, I never jump a red light and I’ve never contemplated a bungee jump. But with Tangle Teezer I took my biggest calculated risk. As a sole trader I bankrolled myself to the tune of £98,000 (E117,000) for a market launch, paid over three years. This was spent on research and development, intellectual properties, tooling and artwork. During this time I was still working as a colour technician four days a week, so literally every penny I earned went into this venture. The three days I wasn’t colouring hair, I was immersed in Tangle Teezer. It was tough. I didn’t buy any clothes, go on holiday, eat out – my friends thought I was bonkers. 58
p58_Last Word_GW1.indd 1
In 2007 I re-mortgaged my flat for £25,000 (E30,000) to cover the start-up of the business and turned myself into a limited company. And for me, that’s when the element of risk kicked in. I was technically unemployed and still working out of my flat – where I had to keep up repayments. In the first year of trading, the company lost £13,000 (E15,500). I still saw it as an investment as the product was getting good feedback from hairdressers and the moneycovered this. The following year I went into profit, and by the end of the third year I got my investment back. To me there are two kinds of risk: all-or-nothing or a calculated risk. I thought mine was the latter. But with hindsight, launching in 2007 when we were heading into
a terrible economic climate with a handless hairbrush that no-one had heard of, along with being slammed on national television in the Dragons’ Den, it was pretty much an all-or-nothing risk! People often think of risk as monetary, but there are other factors involved, too. I didn’t have business partners, so there was just my vision. I only had myself to blame if it all went wrong. And my supply chain risks were reduced dramatically by being manufactured in the UK. If there’s a problem, I need only go up the motorway. And if I go against the rush hour, keeping to the speed limit, I can calculate there’s very little risk. Shaun Pulfrey is the inventor and chief executive of Tangle Teezer
