Feel the force Discover how BC Fibre Force is giving salons the strength to grow their retail offering, increase revenue and retain clients Each new innovation from Schwarzkopf Professional brings returns for salons, and BC Fibre Force is no exception. As one of the hottest professional product releases for 2013, it’s been a hit with salons both commercially and creatively. Here, stylists and salon owners reveal the true strength behind BC Fibre Force.

“We use BC Fibre Force a lot – any client who’s had the treatment invariably goes on to buy the retail products as they see the amazing benefits on their hair” Barbara Aldritt, Bankz

“BC Fibre Force is rivalled by no other haircare product and our salon is so confident that we offer a money-back guarantee on the range. It offers a remarkable change in the hair, we love it” Susan Hackett, Ravens Hair Salon

“Finally, a product that builds the hair from the inside out and brings the hair back to its healthy natural state. From a commercial point of view it’s a successful in-salon service and home-care retail combination” Dervla Mulligan, Hype Hair

“Some clients need more than just a temporary fix on the surface of the hair, and the BC Fibre Force range restores the hair’s architecture from the inside as well as sealing the surface, the results are amazing!” Caroleen Creevy, Ritzys Salon

hello...

Sometimes change can be scary – but shaking things up, getting out of your comfort zone and embracing the unknown is vital if you want your business to thrive in the current climate. For me, September has always symbolised a fresh start and for some reason I’m always more empowered to make life-changing resolutions now than in the dark and dreary days of early January! Inspired by the idea of New Year’s resolutions, our Style Tribes feature, from page 32, looks at the ways you can develop your brand and tweak your business model by embracing a little bit of change in your salon. Sometimes even the smallest change can make a world of difference, so we hope our September issue encourages you to seize the day and take control! And we’ve done that too with a new look, a new logo and a more interactive approach that we believe will empower you to share your success and be inspired by the innovations and ideas of others. Welcome to the new season!

Hollywood fashion secret

Sixty years ago, Elchim, first in Italy, introduced the professional hairdryer on the market, and opened up the door to the development of a set of tools designed specifically for hairdressers, to let them better satisfy their customers. Since its inception, the company worked hard to develop more and more technologically advanced products to support the hairdressers in their daily work. The new payoff “Healthy hair for your beauty” condenses in a few words all those years and years of research which allowed Elchim to

develop efficient and ergonomic products, designed in mind with both the health of the hairstylists and the beauty of the hair, from the styling stage onwards. “Healthy hair for your beauty” expresses the care and love for the beauty of hair, and at the same time, the global commitment of the company. The Elchim hair dryer, thanks to its ionic and ceramic systems, help to close the hair cuticles and moisturize them, to make them soft, shiny and silky, free from static electricity; and the reduced drying time, thanks to the

increased power of the hair dryer, leaves the hair healthier and more beautiful. In addition to being technologically advanced, the Elchim hairdryers are made in Italy - to be exact, in Milan, the city of fashion and design. Created by internationally renowned designers, Elchim products are well known and adopted throughout the world, where the company is present in more than 80,000 hair salons in 48 countries. It’s a good starting point for our further international development: the primary objective of Elchim for the future.

Life

lessons

Andrew Dunne Director of Hair by Mane Hairdressing teaches you to have patience. Try to constantly improve your work while taking in what’s going on around you, rather than worrying about the competition, and you will always be busy.

You need to have a sense of you own ability – I walked away from hair colour for seven years because I felt my work wasn’t good enough. It turns out the person I wanted to teach me was actually inside myself, but I’m naturally lazy so I had to dig deep!

Laura Reid, Trevor Sorbie MBE and Tara Smartt

Learning from the best As part of their L’Oréal Professional ID ARTIST training, Laura Reid from Brown Sugar and Tara Smartt from Hession Hairdressing headed to Manchester for an intensive two days of education. Under the guidance of Dylan Bradshaw, Richard Phillipart, Paul Dennison and Trevor Sorbie MBE, the girls learnt a variety of new skills and techniques ahead of the Catwalk Showcase Tour featuring the A/W13 ‘It Girl’ collection, which will take place on 7 October at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham.

I hated the Celtic Tiger – it destroyed so much. I used to have people who didn’t like my style of work come to me just because I was one of the ‘go-to’ colourists.

You only have one real boss in this job and that’s the client. But, not a lot of stylists seem to take responsibility for colour these days. They ask the client what they want and give it to them, regardless of whether or not it suits them.

Fantastic adds new category Now in its fourth year, the Alfaparf Fantastic Hairdresser Awards is shaking things up for 2013 with the introduction of a new category and the removal of an old one. The Look, sponsored by Inixia, will be awarded to the stylist who produces a front cover-worthy look that is commercial, wearable and reflects current trends. The category replaces Fantastic Boss. Yourells reveals salon venture

Carol Joyce, Sile Seoige and Anna Forde

Award-winning salon owners Anna Forde and Carol Joyce invited TV presenter and fellow Galway girl Sile Seoige to open their latest venture – a second Yourells salon. Located in Moycullen, Co. Galway, the new salon will be led by Carol alongside senior colour expert Laura Langan. Speaking at the launch, Carol said: “It has been a great year for Yourells, TV appearances, the launch of our blog and now the opening of our second salon to service clients old and new in the west of the city and county.”

Anthony Kilcoyne Salon 2, Sligo I am travelling to London to attend the Saco Advanced Cutting & Colouring Course and I’ll be helping Teresa Conroy, who has been shortlisted for the IHF Star Team, while she is honing her skills to hopefully achieve a place on the team.

Written In The Stars Charged with the task of whittling down hundreds of entries for the first ever IHF Star Team, a panel of judges and team mentor Olive Tucker-Lee met in the Wella Studio in Dublin to select the finalists. The judges picked the 20 candidates who will now progress to the next level, before the final 12 are chosen for the Grand Final on 17 November.

My team and I are busy with various fundraising events ready for my trip to India in November with Shaping Futures – an initiative that brings Schwarzkopf Professional together with SOS Children’s villages, to introduce the disadvantaged young adults to the craft of hairdressing.

Retire your straighteners and take up with the hottest and most coveted curling products of the moment, by Glamoriser

we’ve said it before and we’re going to say it again: clients love curls. Poker-straight styles have been given the heave-ho and we’ve moved into a more hair-friendly, curl-loving moment. This is the year of the tszuj (sounds like jujj), where hair is free to move, swish and even bounce! Keen to make styles as easy to achieve for both the stylist and client, Glamoriser has introduced three motorised curling hair tools: Auto-Curler Motor Tong, Motor Wand and Motor Waving Wand. Each one let’s you get creative with curls and will work on both straight and naturally curly tresses. To twirl and curl clients’ hair into some of this season’s must-have styles,

simply clip in the hair ends to your tool of choice, start the motor to automatically wind the hair around the barrel, hold for a few seconds then release the clip. The results? Glamorous, professional curls and waves! Safe and easy to use, the Glamoriser takes the time out of curling and waving and its mineral oil-infused, nano-diamond ceramic barrels are made with real crushed diamonds. The products also boast variable heat settings, auto shut-off after 60 minutes of inactivity and a salon-friendly three-metre swivel cable. So whether your clients fancy finger waves, spirals, coils or curls so big the Duchess of Cambridge would be jealous, it’s time to twist those tresses with Glamoriser.

Inside story Preen Dame Street, Dublin Located in Toni&Guy’s former flagship, husband and wife team Katherine Sweeney and John Cheese have brought this listed building back to life with ornate finishes, bespoke furniture and a truly inspiring take on affordable luxury. Designed by Kari Rocha, the overall feel is very feminine with quirky, eclectic touches. They include a pastel-pink piano workstation (made from Katherine’s childhood piano rescued from her Dad’s shed), a refreshment bar finished in the style of a speakeasy cocktail bar and a spa-inspired backwash area called the Ritual Room. We particularly love the powder blue ottoman in the reception area and beautiful shopfront that has been lovingly restored.

As one of the longest-running hair competitions in the industry, it was a brave move by L’Oréal Professionnel to completely alter the concept of this year’s Colour Trophy. But from the minute you entered the venue – Dublin’s Convention Centre – it was clear the move was going to pay off. Host Bressie took to the stage to introduce the Hugh Campbell Hair Group artistic team, the first catwalk show team of the evening, followed by Peter Mark’s Eastern-themed Hansai collection before the awards themselves got underway. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, a pair of huge black curtains were pulled back to reveal the after-party space to continue the celebrations!

Wella Professionals found Berlin to be the perfect choice, with global creative director for colour, Josh Wood, the perfect host. Guests were whisked off to experience the art of Berlin, with the Irish and UK contingent enjoying a personal audience with illustrator Christoph Niemann. In a quirk of fate, an example of Niemann’s work was given to US President Barack Obama the very same day as a welcome gift celebrating his visit to the German capital. An alfresco dinner at Berlin’s hottest restaurant, Pauly Saal, and a gathering at Soho House Berlin rounded off the short but sweet trip impeccably. PPDs, parabens, ammonia – we’re all familiar with the terms but do you really know what they mean and what they are doing to our bodies? For Catriona Coyle, managing director of Natulique distributor Simply Natural, the desire to eliminate chemicals without compromising on colour or coverage, led her to Natulique – the only completely certified organic professional haircare line in the world. “I’ve been dyeing my hair to cover greys since my late-20s and was constantly on the lookout for a brand that didn’t contain harsh chemicals but unfortunately it didn’t exist,” she says. “I used to get friends to bring back lots of different organic hair colour products from abroad. But I eventually decided to take matters into my own hands, be more proactive and find something for the Irish market. That’s when I found Natulique and decided to bring it to Ireland myself.” So how is Natulique different from other colouring products? Designed with a focus on natural ingredients, a special formulation of pure, natural sunflower seed extract, jojoba oil, apricot seed oil and grape seed oil

activates the colour and actually restores hair by infusing it with a balance of vitamins and minerals. And, not only are Natulique products made with the finest organic ingredients throughout, the company has also achieved ECOCERT certification. Majella Nolan, owner of Amber Cool in Limerick, has started using Natulique in her salon and has seen the benefits first hand. “We are having great results with Natulique so far and have noticed a huge increase in the number of chemicalconscious clients who are looking for a natural alternative, especially those who are pregnant, are undergoing chemotherapy or who have health concerns,” she reveals. “I want to give salon owners the ability to tap into a target market that they’ve never been able to reach before,” Catriona adds. “By using Natulique in their salons, they can increase their customer base by providing a unique colouring experience. Not every customer wants to go down the organic route but if we can have our products in at least one salon per town in every county, we’ll be giving consumers that option.”

THE BIG IDEA

Bright young things

Sugar Cubed

The little sister to the highly acclaimed Brown Sugar group, Sugar Cubed is the latest venture from Mark O’Keeffe and truly is one of a kind. Billed as a dedicated youth salon, prices are lower, the target market is younger and the team are all under 30! But if you think the lower price points equate to a low budget version of its big sister salon, you’d be wrong. Where Brown Sugar is famed for its groomed and glamorous clientele, Sugar Cubed hopes to make its mark as the edgier and more street style-focused member of the family. Located on Dublin’s Clarendon Street and with L’Oréal Professionnel Colour ID ARTIST Mark Byrne at the helm, everything from the graffiti art by Dublin street artist Maser and the Soda Stream bar to the reclaimed stained glass is achingly hip but in a low-key, effortless way. Fresh, focused and fashion-forward, we have a feeling Mark might be on to something…

Now in its 11th year, the Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards is the prime place to network. From the likes of Peter Keaveney, Dylan Bradshaw, Paul Dromgoole and even Dragon’s Den star Richard Farleigh, in previous years we’ve seen some of the best in the business take to the stage to inspire you to take your salon to the next level; and this year will be no exception. When the awards launched back in 2003, there were only six categories and an audience of just 80 invited guests. Now with a fantastic 21 awards up for grabs and an expected audience of up to 500 people, this year promises to be the biggest event to date. Every year the awards aim to inspire the hairdressing community to reach its full potential. New for 2013 is the extended Schwarzkopf Professional Retail Salon of the Year Award, giving even more businesses the chance to excel in a key area. From the Salon Design Award to the Salon of the Year title, the ceremony really does uncover the cream of the crop. The date for your diary is 21 October 2013. So come to the grand setting of the President’s Suite at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin to see the crowning of the best in the business. This high-profile luncheon is the perfect opportunity to meet the top players in the industry, make new friends and experience Irish hairdressing at its very, very best.

The Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards will take place at The Aviva Stadium in Dublin on 23 October. Buy your tickets at ihbawards.ie Creative Head Ireland

Style Tribes

This season it’s time to get tactical Declining column inches, loss of profits, a saturated market… you probably think you’re doing something wrong. But, what if we told you that in order to improve your business, it’s not just you who needs to change, but your clients? From the high-maintenance customer who wants everything under one roof to health-conscious clients looking for an holistic approach, we uncover the different style tribes you need to target to invigorate your business

The Maximalist

“Clients who want lots of different beauty services want them all under the one roof. And if you want to capitalise on this, you have to provide what they’re looking for,” urges Paul Hession of Hession Hairdressing. “Extensions, for example, are a big part of our business. When we first started doing them we thought it would only bring in new customers, but our current clients are opting for partial extensions as well as their normal cut and colour.” Dylan Bradshaw, owner of Dylan Bradshaw Salon in Dublin and make-up range db Face, adds: “Clients are more demanding now and expect a certain level of service. If you don’t give it to them, they’ll go elsewhere.”

The Minimalist

From those who are time-poor or who simply want a quick beauty top-up, the era of express services is here and it’s now becoming big business. New Dublin salon Preen has decided to capitalise on just that with the opening of a Make-Up Bar and an express menu. Co-owner Katherine Sweeney, says: “We offer a ‘half and half’ service – half an hour on hair and half an hour on make-up – perfect for clients on the go.” For Danielle MacCormack, co-owner of Foxy Chopper in Waterford, the introduction of express colour services has been a huge success. She says: “Clients still want to go to a five-star salon and get five-star service, but they also want value for money.”

Style Tribes

Teresa Roche, owner of Teresa Roche Hair Salon in Ennis, Co. Clare, stocks organic-only products and hair colours, such as Natulique. She says: “So many clients are coming to me because they’ve had health scares that have made them rethink what they’re putting into their bodies, especially if they’ve had cancer or are undergoing chemotherapy.” Collette Farren, owner of Serenity Hair Design in Carndonagh, Co. Donegal, has also found that health concerns are prompting more and more people to seek out organic and chemical-free options. She said: “You have to make this service available, otherwise a huge proportion of clients will be totally excluded.”

The Youth

Youth culture is one of the fastest growing sectors in the beauty industry, which is why Eddie Mullins, owner of Hype Hairdressing in Waterford, decided to open a youth salon – Urban Hype. Everything from the salon layout and the music to the Saturday parties where a group can come in just before the salon closes for a E15 blow-dry and complimentary drink echoes this. He reveals: “It is a breeding ground for the other Hype salons. So many of our new clients are the mothers of Urban Hype clients!” Mark O’Keeffe, owner of Brown Sugar group, opened Sugar Cubed as a youth-focused diffusion brand. “Sugar Cubed isn’t discount but it’s cheaper – it’s aimed at the Topshop client who wants to keep up-to-date but doesn’t want to spend a fortune doing it.”

Thoroughly illuminating We searched for a colourist to light up our pages and work on an exclusive shoot with Josh Wood and ILLUMINA COLOR – step forward bright spark Daniel Couch

It was the chance of a lifetime – to create a stunning, on-trend look using ILLUMINA COLOR by Wella Professionals, and win a shoot working with colour genius Josh Wood, styling guru Darren Ambrose of D&J Ambrose fame, and Creative HEAD UK and Ireland. For Daniel Couch, colour director at Russell Eaton in Leeds and gold winner in the Color Category at the Wella Professionals TrendVision Award UK Final 2012, that chance became a reality… Referencing runway shows from Céline and Saint Laurent, Daniel’s beautiful image of flowing locks in antique gold, soft strawberry and glowing oatmeal bowled over the judging panel. Daniel said of his entry: “My aim was to create a sumptuous colour that had points of interest, a look that seemed to move and shimmer while appearing elegant and expensive.” “I felt that Daniel’s entry was a real 360-degree look,”

36

admits Josh, Wella Professionals global creative director for colour and owner of London’s exclusive Atelier. “He’d taken into account the simplicity of the product, that you don’t have to over-colour. I loved the fact he used a model with longer hair – it best showed texture, shine and luminosity. Also his presentation showed me he had a total grasp and understanding of the ILLUMINA COLOR world.” And into that world Daniel plunged, alongside Josh and Darren, to create a collection of luxurious, premium images. So why did Daniel want to win this prize? “Because who wouldn’t? I use ILLUMINA COLOR all the time and Josh is a legend in the industry and an inspiration so it was great opportunity,” reveals Daniel. “I’ve learnt so much and this experience has given me more confidence.” And it’s given us an achingly beautiful collection of images to enjoy – just turn to page 39 to see the results.

Head start To become the best you have to start from the bottom – unless you equip yourself with an education that gives you the edge, says Dylan Bradshaw

The hairdressing industry has a stereotype attached to it; that only non-academic people go into hair. I know first-hand that hairdressing is a great, rewarding career and should be looked upon as a profession such as architecture or fashion design. But if we don’t give ourselves that acknowledgment, we’ll never be able to change the way the industry is perceived and the way it’s run. Education improves standards and what being a hairdresser means. It can give young trainees the skills to be the best. But, to be the best, you have to work hard and equip yourself with a qualification that will provide firm foundations for a long and successful career – and that’s what our new academy is all about. We see it as a tool to better the industry as a whole. I’ve been involved in education for more than 18 years, travelling as an educator with L’Oréal Professionnel, so I wanted to combine all of my knowledge and experience with a credible structured programme. At the academy, we offer a full-time 18-month diploma course that is accredited by City and Guilds. We’ve approached the academy as its own entity but it’s still part

50

p50 Last Word_GW2 1

of the Dylan Bradshaw brand. We have a dedicated, state-ofthe-art space so students get a feel for what it’s like to work in a salon from their very first day. And although we’re City and Guilds accredited, our students get bespoke Bradshaw training, where we tailor teaching to the individual’s needs. We also operate a finishing course that runs for two to three weeks to give recently trained hairdressers the chance to improve on the skills they already have and give them the edge. The academy has been open for little more than a year but we have a five-year plan in place – to foster a culture of gaining accreditation, investing in education and will have encouraged other salons to develop solid training frameworks. And although we know it’s going to take a few years to convince the industry, this kind of education and career progression is what people are crying out for. I believe that once this kind of education is the norm, the possibilities are endless.

Dylan Bradshaw is owner of Dylan Bradshaw salon and academy in Dublin
