The Peter Mark Long Service Awards paid homage to employees in Leinster who have worked at Peter Mark for more than 10 years, while two staff members hit their Golden Anniversary of 50 years with the salon group. Brothers Peter and Mark Keaveney, pictured above, inset, at the launch party in 1961, opened the first Peter Mark salon on Grafton Street in Dublin. Today there are 71 Peter Mark salons across Ireland. When I finally gave in, I went to a local salon and I remember how much I loved it and how it made me feel. I’ve wanted to pass on that feeling ever since.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS’ TIME? I would like to move to Vancouver, I believe there’s a gap in the market for the type of hairdressing I like, doing photoshoots or opening my own salon. I’ve visited the city and I love it, and being so close to the United States makes it very handy to do session work on shows, should the opportunity arise.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG? Session styling for fashion weeks around the globe. Dior would be a dream to work on – I’ve always loved the sleekness and simple-yet-striking hair. But at the same time I also love the grungy style of hair you see at Alexander Wang shows.

IN THE BEGINNING
“I COME FROM a family of business people – we had a grocery shop and a crystal shop to name a few – so starting my own business came naturally,” says Martha Galvin, owner of Allure Hair and Beauty salon. “I’m also the youngest of six, so I am used to dealing with people.” Martha joined the hair industry aged 16, drawn in by the chance to meet new people, use her hands and be artistic. “The beauty of hairdressing is that it doesn’t matter who you are you’re accepted because of your talent with your hands,” she says. Martha opened her own salon when she was 22, for one reason only: “I wanted to give hairdressers somewhere to do their job but also have fun.”
hairdressing awards show which takes place in Dublin on 5 November, provide Martha with the perfect platform. She has her work cut out juggling her business with her creativity, so it was important to find the right brand. “I have always kept up my three elements of work – my business, my artistic side and my competition work. Two years into her career, Martha discovered competitions, and it ignited a lifelong passion. “I was always competitive, so to be able to do hair competitions was brilliant,” says Martha. “When you compete, you have the freedom to do what your heart wants, and if you’re artistic then you need that release.” Competitions like the ALFAPARF Milano Fantastic Hairdresser Awards, Ireland’s largest

Martha sends each member of her team at Allure to a minimum of four external ALFAPARF Milano courses each year, along with running weekly courses in the salon to keep everyone up-to-dates. She believes learning is the key to success in the salon. “We have to go out and get educated,” Martha adds. “It keeps everything fresh.”

With influence from the catwalk and Instagram, hair colour is taking inspiration from the bright and beautiful world of make-up IT ALL STARTED WITH Kim Kardashian West, of course. A snap of her unblended contouring sent social media into meltdown. It suddenly brought a make-up artist’s secret – tailoring shades to help slim a nose or accentuate cheekbones – into the public’s awareness. Hair colourists have always created bespoke shades for clients, but this offered a fantastic opportunity to tie it in with a cosmetic trend people are fascinated with. “There has been a surge of people using make-up to not only change the tones of their skin but also sculpt their face shape. It has meant that clients are much more aware that colour isn’t just about your shade choice but also about placement and how it can massively alter the shape of your haircut,” explains Headmasters colour ambassador and L’Oréal Colour Trophy Ireland judge, Siobhan Jones. Niamh Paget, colour specialist at Brown Sugar Ranelagh near Dublin, agrees: “Make-up has been responsible for the adoption of these colours into

hairdressing. We use a contouring technique in hair colour to highlight facial features, and a blending technique for merging colours according to the change in the seasons.” One of the most frequent concerns Siobhan Jones hears from clients is that their hair is lacking in volume. “Now, with the power of contouring with hair colour just like you would with make-up, you can give the illusion of structure and form,” she says. “With clever light and shadow colour placement you can make it appear hair has more volume.” And as the similarities between hair colour as make-up become better understood, clients become more open to the idea of experimenting with their colour. A subtle way of dipping into this trend is with a rose blush over blonde hair, or braver clients can transform their look with a rainbow of colours, like facepaint for hair. “Colourful hair is arguably the most innovative move in hair in decades,” says Jenny Dawson, master colourist at Dylan Bradshaw and part of the team that won the first L’Oréal Professionnel Style & Colour Trophy International Awards for Ireland.

Most importantly, at every opportunity educate your clients about ‘the truth’ of modern colouring.”

The tricks of the (makeup) trade Enhance eyes… create the darkest colour shades on the under layers of a fringe. This helps make the line look stronger just above the eyes, which in turn brings them out. Enhance cheekbones… extend colour with sectioning so the darker shades sit down near the top of the cheekbone. Make a round face narrower… extend colour down through the hairline section to help slim the facial features. Bring wide eyes closer together… colour should be extended down the sides, so darker shades sit at eye level. Elongate a round face… lighten the top of the hair and the ends using a freehand technique. To shadow the sides of the face, use a darker shade to add depth. Soften a triangular face… darken the top of the head and crown areas and apply lighter pieces through the mid-lengths and ends. This will lighten under the jawline and create shadow at the top of the head.

WELLA PROFESSIONALS ICONS – An Exclusive View, featuring the TrendVision Award, drew hairdressers from all over Ireland to the Clayton Hotel in Dublin. Nicky Byrne of Westlife took to the stage to host the evening, which began with Edward Darley and Gareth Vance of Sasoon Academy showcasing their ‘Underpass’ collection. Inspired by Brutalist architecture, hair was cut in panels and coloured for a clean finish. Darren Lacken of Crow Street Collective, who took home the Platinum Color Vision title at the Wella International TrendVision Award Final in Barcelona last year, then shared his advice for success – it’s all about the model by the way. Then the Wella Professionals Style Council in collaboration with Leonardo Rizzo and Laura Daniel from Sanrizz presented a Sebastian Professional-inspired show, which captured the brand’s fashion-forward philosophy. And then, the moment everyone had been waiting for – the announcement the winners of the Wella TrendVision Irish Heat. UK hairdressers Jayson Gray of Karbon Kyd and Joshua Goldsworthy of Goldsworthy’s revealed the victors, who will now travel to London for the Wella Professionals TrendVision Award UK and Ireland Final.
