DAWN Anew
Clients want colour without compromise whether that’s without compromising on quality, on damage to their hair, on colour options or ingredients; the wants and needs of your consumer are not a fixed thing. There has never been a greater focus on being yourself, as an individual. The rising interest in hyper-natural colour has been the big story following the pandemic. There will always be those who seek out fashionable trends, but this increased desire for personalised versatility – and colour which grows out subtly –cannot be understated. Parallel to this runs the rising interest in vegan, naturally-derived formulas. As clients become more conscious consumers, their expectations and demands of the brands they choose will also rise.

New Colorance Gloss Tones
THE ONLY
CobellaJordanna
Jordanna Cobella, creative director of Cobella Hair & Beauty in London and 2022 Most Wanted Colour Expert finalist, has completely flipped how she presents colour to her “Theclients.biggest challenge we face is frequency of colour visits and encouraging colour sales,” she says. “It’s led me to reconsider the way we market our colour services and how we talk colour in the salon. We change our colour menu every six months and create new seasonal services inspired by latest fashion and interior colour trends.”
Her salon has just launched its A/W22 colour trends, including Tweed Blonde (weaving cool and warm tones together for that It Girl blonde), Golden Hour Glow (honeycomb hues for a golden, glowing finish) and Vintage Chestnut (brunettes with accents of soft cognac, amber tones and desert sand hues).

CAN’TJUSTGETTHINK…VISUALLY
“It allows the client to identify with the images while presenting an opportunity to talk about shades, suitability, placement, and it broadens the scope of colour options rather than a static menu option of ‘highlights’ or ‘balayage’,” Jordanna explains. Client loyalty increases when there is a service specifically offered by you that they can’t necessarily get from elsewhere. “Offering this personalised and bespoke service, with a takeaway retail product built into the price, also helps encourage retails sales through you. Agility should be at the heart of everything we do – both business-wise and creatively.”

“From the start of my career I have cultivated a strong culture of communication with my clients,” explainsDaniel Couch, head of colour at Russell Eaton in Leeds and a fellow Most Wanted Colour Expert finalist. Conversations about colour choices should be taking place with every appointment, he argues. Encourage your clients to take an evolving approach to their look, depending on time of year or what’s going on in their lives. He adds: “In every consultation I aim to suggest at least twooptions, even if they are a regular clientwho wants the same as last time.”
“Clients are looking for a more tailored response to their haircare needs, and they also need to understand the colour process,” says Thomas Hills, director of TH1 Hair in Oxted. “What you see on Instagram isn’t always what you get from one appointment in the salon, so clarity is key.”
Grace Dalgleish, freelance colourist and another Most Wanted Colour Expert finalist, agrees: “I always say ‘every paintis different’ – it’s a bit of a brand ethos of mine – as every client that’s sits in my chair is an individual so I create personalised colour and offer change every time.”
Inspiring your clients is key, and imagery that you have created is where you can pinpoint your aesthetic. “This is especially true for guests who want to try something new as it helps to create a conversation; less about what they would like to do and more about what they could do, which always leads to amazing results,” he adds.
“It can be easy to get lost in lived-in balayage, and sometimes it’s difficult to get your clients to change it up,” says Wella Professional UK & Ireland colour ambassador, James Earnshaw. “I love to add temporary colours to clients that can try something new without commitment.” “I’m always trying to explore colour with a concept that transcends the trap of the commercial Instagram aesthetic,” says Giuseppe Stelitano, creative director at Trevor Sorbie, L’Oréal Professionnel Paris partner and double It List winner in 2021. “I focus on the artistry. You need to show guests the possibilities, making them aware of what is achievable or not!”
DalgleishGrace
THINK… BEYOND INSTAGRAM
It’s crucial to keep clients thinking about real-world colour possibilities, while still drawing on those idea-sparking social media posts. “If I have a new idea or a new technique I will share it as a reel or on TikTok so clients are engaged with me between appointments,” explains Pulp Riot artist Heff y Wheeler. “It’s very powerful that they are looking at what we are doing even when they aren’t with us.”
It’s no secret Instagram is a fantastic tool to help clients get an idea of what they want – but it’s the app brings its own pitfalls: over-edited images, wigs, inaccurate representations of colour…
THINK… ABOUT YOUR LANGUAGE
DanielCouchforWellaProfessionals
The consultation is where you can shine, before you even begin to flex your colour skills, adds Teresa Weller, director of Teresa Weller Hair Art in Dorking. It’s where you get your client excited and hooked on that possibility, that ‘what if’.
“This is the opportunity for us to reassure our clients we have the skills and techniques to perfect their look,” she says. “We talk through all the options and colours available, and price it up fully prior to their appointment so there are no surprises at the end.” That way, they can sit back, relax and get excited about their new look.

Does any other customer-facing service industry stress about increasing prices quite as much as hair? Stacey Whyte from Cheveux Salon in Loanhead, knows why. “We are such a personal service, and as much as we can try to take the emotion out of price alterations, we are human, we have personal conversations,” she says. But clients will know what you’re facing. “They know how things are, how life goes, the rising costs. Trust me, they want to see you succeed overall,” she adds.
IIIss ttthhiihssi b l
“Take the time to know the costs within your business as it all needs to be factored into pricing. I know the cost of having my salon open down to the minute,” says Stacey. “Breaking these down to calculate pricing and profit margins is the only way to build sustainable pricing, not based on other salons or guessing a ballpark figure. Your busiest service could be losing money without you even noticing!” So, put emotion to one side for a few moments and get strategic. Here are a few steps to consider to ensure your colour prices are making you money.
Pricingcolr
IT’S TIME TO GET STRATEGIC WITH HOW YOU PRICE YOUR COLOUR SERVICES S p UNDERCUTTING y r rival
This is a classic – walking around your local area to see what other salons are charging for colour, and then knocking off a few quid in the hope it entices clients into your chair. No real strategy there, and also you’re trusting your pricing policy to a business you have no knowledge of. How did they set their prices? They could be losing money hand over fist. “If you have based your prices on properly calculated costs and someone local is charging significantly less, it’s frustrating because you know that rent and business rates can’t be that different, so how are they making any money?” ask Jack Mead and Lydia Wolfe from Jack & The Wolfe in Lymington.
INCREASE the price when s ck gœs up!
When working out prices for colour services, it’s essential that costs are covered for time and product used, so be practical. “If your supplier increases their prices, you need to be conscious of this and increase prices every year, similar to inflation,” says Josh Miller. “We also have additional add-on prices for extra tubes of tint used for those big heads of hair.” “Every time a bill goes up, stock costs change, inflation and so on, your business is taking a pay cut and absorbing these costs,” adds Stacey Whyte. “We all need to run sustainable businesses with profits we can reinvest to continue to grow.” yy mm eeyy??
16 | PAINT
For Karen McDougall, session stylist and founder of KMD Systems for Hair & Beauty, it’s all about measuring the value per chair in your salon. But what does this mean? In the simplest of terms, it looks like this:
Turn y r CALCULATOR
Price every PUMP and doll
Price EVERYONE’S me Some salons already charge by time, but be sure to include all your costs in that time equation. “If you’re an employer, be aware not only of how much the time of each service costs the business in stylists’ wages, but also include a portion of any support staff wages you have, such as assistants and receptionists,” advise Jack and Lydia. “Their pay needs to come out of the price of these services too as they don’t actively bring in their own revenue.”
Boss your Salon’s Maddi Cook has created a pricing calculator app that you can use regularly to update the figures. “This is your lifeline to profitable and perfect prices,” she explains. “It’s super-easy to use and you can pop back and tweak your numbers whenever you like.” Maddi runs a course that also covers different pricing structures, working out your overheads (even the ones everyone forgets about!) and how to calculate your exact cost per service.
REMEMBER what clienʦ are paying f Yes, we all know there were some clients who learnt how to do their colour at home during the lockdowns. But many have since realised those boxes simply don’t give them the same result –and that’s what you need to realise when thinking about what the colour service price is reflecting. “It’s vital that, as an industry, we demonstrate our professionalism and skill and emphasise how important that is in fulfilling people’s beauty needs,” adds Josh. “It’s not just the colour that clients are paying for, but our skills, knowledge and expertise.”
PAINT | 17
Think of all the tubes, tubs and bottles that sit in your stock room and colour cupboards, and how much it costs you to get them. “Know a breakdown of how much product you use for each colour service and what that amount of product costs you, down to the gram or pump of shampoo,” add Jack and Lydia. There are tools such as Vish and Smartmix by Precision Colour to help you precisely measure every dose, so that you minimise your colour wastage too.
STEP THREE: Divide that total by the number of hours you are open – say 50 hours per week.
STEP TWO: Divide this by the amount of chairs you have – let’s say you have six chairs
PerfectKolestonProfessionalsWellaforEarnshawJames
“You might think you’re making £20 or £40, but it could only be about £8 – it’s shocking,” says James Earnshaw, Wella Professionals UK & Ireland colour ambassador. “It’s really opened my eyes and it gives me the confidence to assess how much I want to make from a service.”
EMBRACE chair- ics!
“It’s important to make sure the actual product is always paid for,” adds Josh Miller, joint managing director at Charlie Miller in Edinburgh, a L’Oréal Professionnel Paris Salon Partner. “We also add on a price for tint glossing in-between highlight services. Balayage has been more challenging and we’ve found it’s best to include the cost of a toner and state that in our prices, as this is nearly always required.”
The calculator figures out exactly how much the colour is that you’re using costs, exactly how long that regrowth lasts, and tells you how much you need to make so that you can definitively know how much to charge. “It’s not plucking a figure from the air, it’s factual. But if people aren’t willing to pay it, you should have the confidence to say no,” he adds.
We’re talking a lot about working out what things cost; well, help is available for these particular maths problems. Wella’s profit calculator is an invaluable tool that lets you work out exactly how much profit you’re making from each service.
STEP ONE: Take your average weekly salon income – let’s say its currently £3,000 net of VAT
“Sadly and rather soberingly, this example shows that a six-chair salon, open for 50 hours per week, generates only £10 per hour per chair,” she winces.

DOUBTING YOUR KNOWLEDGE, imposter syndrome, fear, and generally thinking your skill isn’t good enough. As creative people, these are feelings that many of us will experience at some point in our career. But we assume most of those feelings will ease off and we’ll become more confident as we become more experienced. Although there’s some truth in this, the feelings will naturally creep back in at some point… These doubts have been heightened in our industry due to recent global challenges – the lockdowns were a real knock. I noticed that the mindset of most hairdressers I have coached was very similar. Fear of failure, harshly comparing themselves with others and so on, and this was from highachieving individuals and talented, knowledgeable colourists at that.
CRASHCONFIDENCELETDON’TYOUROpini
Despite how important practical skills and abilities actually are, we can’t forget the importance of our attitude and mindset towards your skill. You get out what you put in, you achieve what you THINK you can achieve. My advice to those experiencing a confidence crash? Go against what you think. If you feel fearful or worried to try something new, do exactly what you’re afraid of! Try it. Face your fear. Surprise yourself. Practise your right to be confidently creative.
YOU’VE GOT TECHNIQUE AND SKILL, BUT DO YOU HAVE CONFIDENCE?
So how do we, as highly capable colourists, actually elevate our craft with confidence and stop letting these feelings get in the way and keeping us in our creative comfort zones?
It’s simple really. Confidence in your craft happens in more places than just your practical ability. It’s about the way you feel, the way you act, the way you communicate about your colour, what you imagine is possible for yourself.
