THE JOI OF HEALTHY COLOUR

Healthy hair is packed with keratin. Over time, all hair loses some of that keratin because of sun, styling and chemical treatments. As a result it becomes fragile and prone to breakage – it’s damaged hair! The Quadramine Complex – the technology that all JOICO colours have in common – is made of natural keratin that fills the gaps caused by damage. Hair is reconstructed from the inside out, while it is being coloured

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING SALON COLOURISTS RIGHT NOW? Meeting the expectations of social media images. Yes, this is possible, but it’s about educating clients that hair always looks different in images and with different lighting it can look like a totally different colour.

A colour correction - thank God for L’Oréal Professionnel toners!

AND WHAT’S THE BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY? Being able to self-promote yourself through social media is a massive breakthrough and we should use it to the best of our abilities. 08 | PAINT

MY ADVICE

Yellow, yellow and more yellow

Learn to style really, really well. Not Another Salon gets asked so often what products we use, but we barely use any. We lean towards the KeraStraight irons a lot, because you can turn the temperature down. If you have even straightened on high heat after you’ve done a creative colour, you’ll know it can instantly strip the colour to a weird unintentional shade, it’s terrifying! Even on my colour courses we go over styling because sadly, in this era, when you’re trying to build a career, it doesn’t happen if you don’t get a good picture.

AND WHAT’S THE BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY? Technology. Bond builders have changed my life as a colourist. I’m working with Innoluxe at the moment to launch version two, which is even better. It really is a colourist’s world at the moment. Cutting has limitations. Scissors still look like scissors from 50 years ago and, when I last checked, heads are still the same shape. I really don’t think anyone has improved on Sassoon in all these years. This is a colouring era now and it’s here to stay.

Today’s vibes

08-13_Painters_GW4.indd 2

Unrealistic expectations are slowly drowning us. It’s a long and painful death. Remember when over-retouching and skinny girls got out of hand in women’s magazines, giving us unrealistic ideas of what is real? This is what is happening to hair, and I’m fighting with all my might to stop this. Do you remember when mascara ads were computer generated? It’s just not allowed anymore. It took the industry and the consumers to start saying ‘no’ for it to begin to change. Of course, the fashion industry is still a mess, I’m afraid. We will be helping to push the industry into a place where you actually have a chance at making your client smile.

21/02/2018 13:40

MY ADVICE This is pretty obvious, but it’s all about protecting the integrity of the hair. It doesn’t matter what colour you achieve, it’s pointless if the condition has been compromised. We need to consider more than the finished result a client sees at the end of the visit; it’s about what it looks like further down the line, and as soon as we compromise on condition, we compromise on longevity, too.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING SALON COLOURISTS RIGHT NOW AND THE BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY? Client expectation. Like it or loathe it, social media is huge, and as great a tool it can be for businesses, and in particular promoting an individual hairdresser or salon group,

it also has some serious pitfalls and can have a serious knock-on effect in terms of expectation. When clients see dramatic changes achieved seemly with little effort/process, it completely changes what they expect from their salon experience and the end result they can achieve. There are, however, two sides to this, if we can educate our clients properly and be honest into what has gone into the creation, then we can capitalise on it. Increased expectations mean people are also chasing more aspirational results, which in turn can mean increased revenue. But carrying out time consuming, complicated processes on our clients’ hair does mean good news in one way; we can charge more and our clients will see the increased value for their investment.

Stage work in the Ukraine

#TBT 2015 – the inspiration was a Japanese warrior with an Alexander McQueen twist

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt the hard way, it’s only ever do something you’re comfortable with. We all want to please our clients, but sometimes, you just need to trust your instincts and have the courage to say ‘no’. With social media creating highly unobtainable results, the pressure on us colourists is twice as hard. This is why it’s important to stay true to your gut feeling and educate our clients on what’s possible, what the costs are and how long it’ll take, all while maintaining healthy, well-nourished hair.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING SALON COLOURISTS RIGHT NOW? There’s one issue that most colourists don’t even know is happening. Why is it that the majority of women that we see that are over the age of

Inspired by that small amount of blue sky piercing though dull, grey, overcast clouds

40, have beige bobs or dull, unflattering hair? It’s because the majority of us are afraid to be creative on our mature clients. I urge you, don’t be afraid of offering clients of ANY age creative changes – you’ll be surprised at how many take you up on it.

AND WHAT’S THE BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY? Social media platforms really do create a lot of opportunity, even though it creates a lot of pressure for us! I’ve been scouted several times from other salons, brands and production companies from my accounts! But although social media is a great “platform” tool, it’s also educational, informative and helpful. 2017

THE TREND METALLICS

Gold, silver and bronze – the holy trinity of metallic shades are all winners this season. “Metallic colours have become a big trend,” says Tracy Hayes, global head of technical training at Fudge Professional. “The look now is about going big and bold, with a full head of metallic colour.” Sarah Black, colour specialist at Linton & Mac and winner of the 2017 L’Oréal Colour Trophy, says that “choosing a metallic colour is a great way for clients to be more creative, as it is more wearable for their lifestyles; it is superluxe, chic, and looks effortless”. So, how do you achieve this shimmering perfection clients crave? “Creating the perfect base for the metallic colour to sit on is essential,” she explains. “I always explain to clients that their hair has to reach a pale yellow before achieving any metallic shades.” L’Oréal Professionnel’s Metals by Majirel range and the new Colour Addict Shimmer range allow you to do this seamlessly. And the most important things when it comes to metallics? Hair quality! “If hair is tortured before application, it can give and uneven result with less shine,” says Affinage global ambassador, Tracey DevineSmith. “Only use a premium product; Affinage’s Metallics range contain argan oil and shea butter to increase luminosity and shine,” she says. John Spanton, creative colour director at Trevor Sorbie, agrees: “To get the best out of this trend all depends what the client does at home. Metallic colours will dull after just one week without the right homecare!” PAINT | 17

It’s you, only better! This trend is all about ‘has she or hasn’t she coloured her hair?’ This can be harder to achieve than all-over colour; it might look like the hair hasn’t been coloured, but that is where the skill lies. “It’s all about subtle enhancement rather than masking their true hair colour,â€? explains Sean Nolan, head of technical at HOB Salons. Sean suggests using Wella Professionals’ Illumina Gloss as this highlights the hair’s natural tone without blanket coverage. Steph Peckmore, group colour director at Bad Apple, believes ‘nude’ hair is going to be big in 2018. “It’s the new sun-kissed – it’s great for women who just want a beautiful, luxurious ďŹ nish to their hair,â€? she says. Warren Boodaghians, TIGI global academy technical director, sees the trend in make-up for sheer, nude colours coming through into hair. “Just as make-up can enhance the wearer’s complexion and eye colouring, sheer hair colouring techniques can add gloss and shine, enhancing natural tones. ‘Natural colour’ is all about multi-dimensional and universal colouring as opposed to opaque colours,â€? says Warren. Denis de Souza, Joico celebrity colourist, is known for his ‘natural-isbetter’ approach to colour and believes the best way to achieve this trend is by “creating a stretched root eectâ€?. He says: “Choose a colour similar to your client’s natural hair so it will grow in seamlessly.â€? To keep their hair looking ‘nearly natural’, Denis suggests using Joico LumiShine followed by Joico K-Pak Color Therapy.

Rainbow hair is all grown up; saturated shades are evolving into something more subtle. The poster girl of this hue is model Stella Lucia, who wore a Rose Quartz shade in a sea of neutrals at Alexander Wang S/S18, thanks to Redken global color creative director, Josh Wood. “It was always going to be a pink, but moving to something grungier,” he says. Schwarzkopf Professional’s colour ambassador, Lesley Jennison, co-created the new Schwarzkopf Professional Dusted Rouge colours. “For 2018 I see a trend for a more vintage tone of red,” she explains. “It uses reds, coppers and violets but in muted tones.” Sean Nolan, head of technical at HOB Salons, believes that just because these new shades are slightly more subdued doesn’t mean they have any less impact. “This is the hair world’s answer to long-wear matte lipstick; bold colour without the shiny topcoat.” Siobhan Jones, Headmasters colour ambassador, recommends mixing up L’Oréal Professionnel #COLORFULHAIR to create a custom colour. “The idea of dusty does not necessarily mean darker,” she says. “A really great way to achieve this is by selecting a neutralising tone, and intermixing this with your colour of choice.” And these frosted colours are bang on-trend, says Jason Hogan, associate colourist at Josh Wood Colour: “My favourites from Pantone’s colour palette for 2018 are Ash Rose, Almost Mauve and Pink Lavender – they work so organically with a cool skin tone.”

ROSS CHARLES, OWNER of Ross Charles Hairdressing, knows all too well how easy it is to slip into a colour rut and that lifting yourself out of it can seem an impossible task. But for him, it was entering a colour competition that did the trick. Ross and his salon team entered the L’Oréal Colour Trophy as it’s a “fabulous chance to create some inspiring imagery and showcase your colour abilities”. Linton & Mac won L’Oréal Colour Trophy last year and they found it a wonderful tool for getting the team motivated and excited. “This award has made us all feel unstoppable as a brand,” says Sarah Black, principal stylist at Linton & Mac. Kai Wan, owner of P.Kai salons, enters the Wella Professionals TrendVision Award every year, while Caroline Brand, owner of Oracle Hair & Beauty, won a global Bronze at Goldwell’s Color Zoom last year in the Creative category. She loved bringing elements of what she learned during the competition back to the salon to inspire herself and her team. But for Lydia Wolfe, from Tony Wood Hairdressing, it was all about the taking part. “Winning gold in the Stylists’ Favourite Award New Talent Catgeory at Global Zoom is something I’ll never forget, but getting to meet and compete against stylists from all corners of the world and share our adoration for the industry was incredible.”

IF YOU FEEL YOU’RE not being challenged enough or you’re resting on your laurels in your current position, it could be time to ask for a promotion. “If you’re ready to move up to the next position, you should already be performing above and beyond your current job description,” says Leah Durrant, owner of Leah Durrant Hair Salon and Beauty Re:Treat. She also advises to create a list of your achievements that show how you’ve gone above and beyond your current job responsibilities,

but mainly, “try to put across to your manager how the promotion will benefit the company and how you feel you could make a difference”. This is what P.Kai’s Kai Wan looks for when considering promoting a member of his team. “I want them to be able to tell me what they will bring that’s extra to their existing role and why they want a promotion. If they’re able to show me how they’re improving their skills, achieving high figures, where they’re excelling, then they’re likely to get a yes,” he explains.

“COLOUR COURSES ARE great for stylists who are passionate about colour as they can really help to develop your skills, allow you to learn new techniques and take your creativity to the next level,” says Neil Barton, Goldwell ambassador and owner of Neil Barton Hairdressing. Karine Jackson, owner of Karine Jackson Hair, suggests seeing what courses your colour house offers and if you can get any for free. “I believe it’s important to work with your colour house as they’ll have the colour knowledge, but also their ambassadors can educate you on colour placement,” says Karine. Suzie McGill, international artistic director and owner of Rainbow Room International’s Uddingston salon in South Lanarkshire, agrees: “We’re with Schwarzkopf Professional and there’s always a great range of courses available to help perfect our team’s colour skills.” When it comes to the top level, intensive colour courses, L’Oréal Professionnel has the Colour Specialist Degree, Goldwell has Master Colourist and Wella Professionals has Master Colour Expert – however, if you’re looking for something more tailored, Karine advises to look for people who offer independent colour training. “You could approach anyone who’s well known for their colour knowledge and ask if they could do a bespoke course for you at your salon as well,” adds Karine. For Jack Howard, from Paul Edmonds, there’s never been a better time to learn. “There are so many new ways to learn and be inspired on any budget,” he says. Jack streams on Facebook and Instagram from shows he’s doing so you can see the technique up-close while he’s working. He’s also launching video on demand. Or have you thought about offering your team your own knowledge? Jenny Pelter, technical director of Westrow Artistic Team, believes providing your own courses is a good way to not only excite and inspire your team, but to learn from your peers. “We have a training morning every couple of months where a different stylist shares a new technique or trend,” she says. “The only way to progress is to keep on learning and you are never too experienced to learn something new from someone new.”

“YOU CAN’T SIT IN a colour rut and wait for inspiration to come to you, it’s all about self-motivation,” says John Spanton, creative colour director at Trevor Sorbie. One of the best ways to get yourself out of said rut is to create a photographic collection. “Creating collections is a great way for stylists to get incredibly creative,” says Neil Barton. “They allow you to take new approaches, try new techniques and give your work real depth.” And although cost is a factor, it shouldn’t be a deterrent. Neil Barton says: “Creating a collection doesn’t have to be costly to be good. The important thing is to plan and prepare and have a vision of

what you want to achieve. Create mood boards and take time to select the right models in order for your collection to be exactly how you want it.” It’s also worth remembering that you can use the imagery from the collection time and time again, be it in competitions, magazines or for your salon displays. They’re also a really good way to assess the work that you’re doing in the salon, according to Esther Couchman, advanced stylist and colour specialist at Bloggs Salons. “Collections give you a chance to try new techniques – work with wigs, wefts and create different textures in the hair to really showcase your colour,” she adds.

IN THE MOOD TIGI’S EDIT OF THE KEY S/S18 TRENDS

BLONDES “SHEER GENIUS” Blending futurism with more traditional delicates and synthetic fabrics, as seen a Fendi, Mark Fast and Burberry. In hair, this translates into pale, almost transparent blonde tones, and simple and androgynous styles.

8pp_Tigi PAINT.indd 6

20/02/2018 16:27

DEEP TONES “ON THE FRINGE” As seen at by the Kenzo and Miu Miu shows, this trend makes a punk-inspired, rebellious political statement It’s a trend that suits an urban, forthright personality, with strong, bold, tonally saturated colours, boyfriend clothes and a haircut to match!

BRUNETTE “RETRO REVIVAL” This trend – spotted at Versace and Isabel Marant – oozes feel-good nostalgia with a definite nod to the ’90s and the next generation of model royalty: think offspring of the likes of Cindy Crawford, Jude Law, Noel Gallagher and Johnny Depp. Hair is worn in loose, glamorous waves or with an edge of ’90s grunge.

PASTELS “OH-SO PRETTY” As seen at Saint Laurent and Versace, this is about the ’80s party girl, a grown-up prom queen who loves glitter and sparkle. Hair inspiration is taken from fabrics – think pinks, romantic soft knots, braids and twists.

With 2.2 million Instagram followers, to say he is a social media sensation is an understatement. But growing up it was a different story. He didn’t know who he was, what he wanted to do in life, or what his purpose was. Then he found hair and he found his direction. “I found my purpose. It was to make a difference; change the world by doing hair,” says Guy. “But more than that it was to be a friend, a #hairbestie, and inspire other stylists just like me to find their identity, because I had such a hard time finding mine.” From this grew #mydentity. “I created #mydentity because I wanted to customise colours that we all dream of – hues that are

missing from today’s hair colour,” explains Guy. “I wanted to create a range that brings back the fun and excitement in our industry.” However, most of all, he wanted to create a community that empowers the #hairbestie family, and enables all colourists and stylists to find their #mydentity, “because when you know who you are, you have the courage to do anything you dream”, he adds. With the support of millions of #hairbesties around the world, you can now create the most demanding hair shades of the season with Guy Tang’s #mydentity. Technique, c’est chic

IT’S OFFICIAL, 2018 IS THE YEAR OF TECHNIQUES. AS COLOUR SERVICES ENTER THE MAINSTREAM ON SOCIAL MEDIA, WE EXPLORE HOW COLOUR CHOICE IS BECOMING LESS IMPORTANT AS IT’S ALL IN THE TECHNIQUE

42 | PAINT

42-44_Technique_GW2.indd 1

20/02/2018 17:30

From a colourist’s perspective, the age-old question is what comes first – the colour or the technique. Last year saw a huge focus on the technique and the tonal choice was secondary. This is set to carry on

Jo O’Neil

International technical education and director for Toni&Guy

WHAT BEGAN WITH ombre led to balayage and then it went on to contouring – we don’t know where it will end up, but we do know that clients are ever more interested in the techniques used, rather than the shade. And we have social media to thank for that. Professional techniques are now one of the biggest awareness drivers in the colour industry, fuelled by the increase in both consumers and professional influencers showcasing their techniques and looks on social media (in particular Instagram). In 2017, there were more than one million Google searches for balayage and this is only set to grow. “From a colourist’s perspective, the age-old question is what comes first – the colour or the technique,” says Jo O’Neil, international technical education and director for Toni&Guy. “Last year saw a huge focus on the technique and the tonal choice was secondary. This is set to carry on.” While colour is inarguably important, all salons need to be onboard the technique train if they want to stay ahead. “The advances in technology mean that box colour is better than ever, so we need to be really hot on our techniques to keep the client coming back for something she can’t do herself at home,” says Jack Howard at Paul Edmonds. Professional techniques, no matter what a box says, can’t be replicated at home. Good news for salons as colour choice becomes less important and actual application technique is what matters. So what techniques can you look forward to trying out this year? Is it time to say bye-bye to balayage and good-day to glazing? “Balayage has evolved as people have experimented with it,

and it now falls into different categories – creative, classic, micro and Californian – and this allows colourists to work in different ways, which gives them more creativity,” says Jack. And colour brands are leading the way, with Redken keen to portray itself as the ‘technique perfector’ with Shades EQ and TIGI launching five new techniques this spring as part of its latest collection. Each new technique is “designed to take the concept of colour customisation to the next level”, explains Warren Boodaghians, TIGI global academy technical director. “Whether working with commercial or creative colours, the palette can be simplified to suit the wearer.” Our favourites include Punk Placement – strong, block colours are diffused in certain areas with softer colours to soften the overall boldness; Aurora – fluid colouring inspired by the Northern Lights; and Sheer Glazing – working with the same overall tone, a solid under colour blends through to the focal area. While it’s important to be aware of all the latest techniques, Amy Fish, PAINTER and colourist at Larry King, believes the oldies are goldies and highlighting is making a comeback. “It’s highlighting but not to the root,” she explains. “Balayage has taken over these past couple of years, but I feel highlighting is making a comeback. There’s much more to highlights than there used to be.” “Highlights are not leaving our salon anytime soon,” says Rocio Vaquiero-Lago, technician at Michael Van Clarke. “However, we do look at ways to change it up and make them more modern or on-trend by mixing them with other colour application techniques. For example, adding a touch of balayage throughout the ends can add more texture and depth.”

L’Oréal Professionnel’s #InstaContouring frames and accents clients’ features, using between five and 10 meches, while Redken’s Go Bronde services offer the chance for brunettes to go slightly lighter or warmer in fewer than 20 minutes. Clients may be more savvy when it comes to techniques and trends, but “it’s still your job to guide them into the best decision”, advises Katie Mulcahy, UK colour ambassador for Rusk. “Don’t be afraid of trying new techniques and encouraging your clients to try something new – chances are they’re already thinking about it.” Katie approaches a colour consultation with the idea that she will always create a bespoke colour for a client. “This way, I can use the techniques that will suit them and their needs, rather than trying to recreate an impossible and super-filtered celebrity trend.” At Rush, when a new technique is uncovered, the group ensures all its colourists are confident in discussing it with clients. “With social media now heavily influencing the hairdressing industry, it is extremely important to ensure you offer clients the chance to experience new techniques and that you are fully trained and knowledgeable on them, too,” says Chris Williams, international colour director at Rush. “When it comes to your clients, they also want to be fully informed, so take them through the process and how this will work for them and their hair, and how it will help them achieve their hair goal.” While most clients will enjoy finding out about new techniques, some may feel daunted by the prospect of ‘branching out’. “Visuals definitely help,” says Gorka Arraras, master stylist at Charles Worthington Salons. “We spend a lot of time immersed in the latest catwalk trends, but also on social media, and follow bloggers and influencers. When we are discussing or recommending new looks or techniques to our clients, visuals from the likes of Instagram, Pinterest or any other social media platform are always a helpful tool.” As ever, consultation is key. “When discussing new techniques with clients, I inform them all about it and how it will benefit them individually during the consultation,” says Philip Bell, from Ishoka Hair and Beauty. “I explain how the technique was discovered, the way in which it will benefit and how it will transform their look. I also take them through every part of the process, using images to demonstrate. Clients put their trust into you, the stylist.” Whether you’re a stickler for traditional techniques such as highlights, or a technique turncoat always on the lookout for the next big thing, the year of techniques is only just getting started.

Where will the new techniques take you and your clients this year? Show us your latest techniques on Instagram, using the hashtag #ColourIRL and you could see your work featured on creativeheadmag.com/paint

t h g i r b THE SIDE

THIS YEAR, BRIGHT, BOLD SHADES LOOK SET TO BECOME THE NORM – AND VIRAL COLORWASH BY CELEB LUXURY WAS MADE FOR THIS MOMENT ‘Go bold or go home’ was the battle cry last year as millennial pink and bright blue hues took over Instagram, and the trend is only set to get bigger. As it continues to grow, clients are looking for easier and simpler ways to go bright and bold – so Viral Colorwash by Celeb Luxury is what you need to offer. Featuring seven extreme colours, three pastels and a clear shampoo, conditioner and styler, Viral Colorwash is perfect for clients who are looking to maintain or deepen more vibrant or pastel hues between salon visits. The system is made up of Viral Moisturewash, Viral Blonditioner and Viral Extreme Smoothing Styler, and clients will love it for its easy, no-fuss approach to colouring the hair. It restores hair to a healthy, natural feel without the use of any harsh sulphates or parabens. If going bright and bold is a bit too much for some of your clients, then offer Celeb Luxury Gem Lites. This system is used in the same way as Viral, but it offers more traditional colour shades. Made up of Gem Lites Shinewash, Gem Lites Bonditioner and Gem Lites Celeb Secret Fix, clients will enjoy real rich colour, a high-lather cleanse and conditioned

results with visibly reduced colour fade. Clients should use the complete system, alternating the Shinewash with their chosen shade of Gem Lites Colorwash (of which there are 10 brilliant tones and a clear shampoo, conditioner and styler to choose from) to delicately cleanse, nourish and restore hair to a healthy, natural feel. Both Viral and Gem Lites are cruelty-free and vegan, and both provide instant rich or bold colour results while protecting coloured hair from the sun, as well as environmental damage and fighting colour fade. In fact, when using the entire Gem Lites or Viral systems, laboratory testing results revealed:

• Breakage reduced by up to 91 per cent • Frizz and humidity control for 24 hours • Static reduced by 95 per cent • Heat protection from styling tools up to 230˚C Available exclusively through Salon Success, Viral and Gem Lites by Celeb Luxury are sure to be your clients’ go-to for quick and easy colour updates.

“When I was designing the salon I felt it was important that we had a selection of backgrounds to take pictures against. You need to keep your feed interesting, and variation in backdrops helps. It’s all about natural light but in the salon this isn’t always possible so we use a ring light; it makes colours pop and your client’s skin glow.

NIKKI LEE AND RIAWNA CAPRI Nine Zero One @ninezeroone 243k FOLLOWERS 1. Don’t be private – let everyone see your work. 2. Put your location, contact details and so on in your bio. 3. Your username is very important – people must be able to find you! 4. Showcase your personality.

5. Make sure everyone is on the same page aesthetically so you can promote everyone in team.

“Spend time to focus the camera, check the image, tweak rough strands of hair and make it perfect! I always keep the focus of the photo where I want it to be, by cropping out any distracting elements for the best composition. Don’t let Instagram crop your image for you. “I think it’s imperative the image remains unfiltered. I want clients to see a true representation of my work so I avoid the Instagram filters and use a couple of third-party apps to edit images such as Enlight and Whitagram.”

6. You’ll need consistency in your imagery – the lighting, the background wall etc. 7. Invest in a ring light, you don’t want shadows! 8. Use Snapchat and Instastories for ‘messy stuff ’ – mixing colours and so on. Keep it beautiful for Instagram. 9. Hashtags are the new Google. What would someone search for? Don’t just write ‘hair’! Tag companies you’re involved with hopefully they’ll repost you.

“On 2 July, I’m hosting my first social media course! I get so many questions about how to capture colours on Instagram and how to boost following that I’ve pretty much been forced to do it! It’s true ‘Not Another’ style though, so it’s going to be pretty crazy!“ To book, visit notanotheracademy.com

MAKE A SPLASH

Reality’s ” might @dna_artspacesalon

ANGELO VALLILLO VALLILLO, CO-FOUNDER OF NEW SALON DNA ARTSPACE IN NOTTINGHAM, EXPLAINS WHY HIS TEAM ISN’T AFRAID TO GET REAL WITH COLOUR CLIENTS

AT DNA ARTSPACE colour is massive in every way; massive for profits and a massive problem as clients just don’t seem to understand the progress that colour has made. Social media is amazing and as a brand we’re strong on it. We believe that it’s the future. However, the editing factor is killing us. Clients are coming in with unrealistic demands. But to be fair, it’s not their fault. How are they to know that a colour going from dark to blonde takes maybe a full day, or even three visits to the salon? And that the cost of such a transformation is £300 or more? All that they see is a ‘before’ and an ‘after’ picture and a filter. The colour they have been having in the past few years has been a tint and highlights coming in at £60 to £70. It’s down to us to educate our teams and clients on what’s what. We must stop this practice of editing colours just so that our Instagram feed looks amazing. At DNA ARTSPACE, we believe less is more, and being honest with what we post on our salon Instagram @dna_artspacesalon is vital. Consultation has never been more important; before any colour service we have a discussion about what the client wants and we give them a programme of how we are going to achieve it. No client is turned away, but they are made aware of the price and the time it will take! Condition is so important to us at DNA ARTSPACE that we offer treatments to get a client’s hair to a great state before we even colour. We have four Wella Master Colour Experts at our salon, as we need our colourists to have the best training so we can give the best result. DNA ARTSPACE’s passion for education and developing our team gives us the confidence to express ourselves as artists and give our clients the best results. You have to be prepared to progress and to tell your clients honestly that their craved-for colour isn’t going to happen today – we can do it, but we must do it the right way.

Want to Make a Splash with a colour-centric opinion? Let us know @creativeheadmag and we’ll start a conversation 54 | PAINT
