RETURN OF THE FOILS!

Casey Coleman

“I know, it sounds like some sort of Star Wars film, right? Well, it needs that much drama... “For years now, we’ve been obsessed with freehand techniques, refining our skills without any foil, meche or any adjacent materials we would traditionally use. And as much as I’ve enjoyed switching it up with freehand fun, I’ve started to grow an interest in different ways I can use foil. I’ve found that I can get similar results to freehand techniques but in half the time. As a business owner this is brilliant as I can still deliver great service, charge for the same result, and utilise my time way more efficiently. One of the main methods I’ve been playing around with is direction, either physically over-directing my foil, or painting on a result that looks over-directed. This is great for super soft hairlines, creating that sultry halo of contoured highlight, as well as being spot-on for a heavier result. “For clients who want a super-fine colour or depth injected into their blondes, I’ve been enjoying split lights. By taking the left out section of a highlight and weaving it again, we create a super-fine highlight that can be used to create soft additional colour to softly break up two-dimensional blondes without ’90s stripes of clockable colour. By pushing my foiling skills, I’ve learned how this timeless technique will never die. I don’t want to get bored with colour, so by trialling new ways of using classic techniques, it keeps me on my toes and keeps me excited about my passion for all things PAINT!”

FOR PADDY MCDOUGALL,, ART DIRECTOR AT RAINBOW ROOM INTERNATIONAL’S GEORGE SQUARE SALON AND IT LIST IT GUY 2018, IT’S ALL ABOUT…

BETTER BLEACHING

“Toning is massive right now and, depending on the target shade, it can hide a multitude of process sins. But when you’re trying to achieve a stripped-back result, it’s all about lift. In these cases we can’t rely on toner to rescue us, so we need to make it all about the lightening phase of the application. Spilt the hair into four even sections and always start from the back. Begin applying the solution to the hair, taking fine sections and ensuring total saturation. Apply only to the bottom half of the hair; after working methodically through all four sections, start timing. After 10 to 15 minutes, begin checking. “Once the ends have begun to lift past stiff yellow, apply to the middle, taking colour up to, but leaving off, the immediate root. Leave to develop. After another 10 to 15 minutes check the midlengths and ends have begun to lift clean and even and then start on the root area. After developing for another 15 to 20 minutes, check and reapply to any sections if necessary. Once you’re 100 per cent satisfied you have a clean lift, then rinse. Apply bonding treatment and porosity equalising spray then towel dry. Tone at the basin, doing the roots then ends. Avoid overtoning by using diluter to soften the strength of your toning solution.”

THE ASSISTANT!

“Bryony Cairns has been an assistant at Larry King for a year now and I wanted to ask what she’s learnt and her plans for the future. Inspiration can come from anywhere, and it’s interesting to hear what the hairdressers of the future think!” AMY: What have you learnt most in this year at Larry King? BRYONY: My confidence has grown so much because the team supports me and want to teach me. AF: What would you like to learn more about? BC: I’m focusing mainly on colour as I want to be a colourist, but I’d love to learn more styling. AF: What advice would you give to other assistants? BC: When you feel like giving up, remember why you started. I moved to London on my own from a small salon in Devon where I was one of three stylists. I wanted to come to London to push myself. It’s been amazing and I have loved it, but sometimes I miss home. AF: What is your favourite technique? BC: How to blend balayage by brushing the product upwards to create the perfect blend. I love it. AF: What would you do if you owned the salon for a day? BC: Put in a glitter ball and play disco music all day! AF: Who is your biggest inspiration? BC: Make-up artist Isamaya Ffrench; I love the art she brings to the beauty industry. AF: Do you have any tips for getting through a busy day salon day? BC: Positive team vibes!

CINEMATIC BLONDES

“Blondes have always been a favourite of mine; I love playing with seamless and smudged nuances that add and subtract light, working together in perfect harmony. It can be hard work and time consuming, but the results are timeless when you get the balance right. Normally I like to start the process with a cleanse phase to remove any unwanted tonal deposits. Then, and only then, do I start the proper consultation process. I like to know where we stand on a difficult undercoat. This is the definition phase, to clarify which methods I need to work with to achieve the best outcome. The next phase is process, the “how to”, if you will. This is the nitty-gritty, and the biggest chunk of time. The rest just flows… and a top coat is usually required. This is when I’ll reach for my hero products that never let me down, such as Perfecton and Illumina Color from Wella Professionals. An overview and follow-up visit are planned, as maintenance is always key to explain.”

n l i H a i h S NOT ANOTHER SALON

FOR THE MOST WANTED COLOUR EXPERT AND NOT ANOTHER SALON BOSS, SOPHIA HILTON, IT’S ALL ABOUT…

FIGHTING THE FADE “Let me level with you – top-up colour pots save our lives. Ever spent what seemed like a lifetime changing a colour from light to dark and knowing, despite pre-pigging, it’s going to start fading right away? No matter how much you tell that client she needs to come back to the salon for top-ups, she’s not going to. After all, she’s just had to remortgage her house to afford your colour change bill so we all know she’s going to skimp on aftercare and top-ups. “At Not Another Salon we do a lot of vivid colours, and man do they fade. We started to make-up take-home pots of colour to keep them, well, topped up. That way, when I get a complaint of fade from a client, I ask: “Have you put your top-up pot on yet?” When they say no, I reply: “No problem, just pop it on tonight in the shower and if you’re not happy by the morning, give me a call.” They NEVER call. “But it’s not just vivid colour clients we offer this added extra to. I’ve made it mandatory for the staff to sell these pots of colour for light to dark colour changes, too. We sell L’Oréal Professionnel Chromative to the client; there’s no oxidant in it so they can’t go wrong or cause any damage. We sell it for the same amount they would buy at a wholesaler that sells to the public. “Trust me: save yourself the extra headache and give your client some of the responsibility.”

“As a bespoke salon priding itself on unique services, TIGI Copyright goes hand in hand in offering our clients a truly personal service. My stylists have more pride in the finish of their clients’ hair, as they know the results will be perfect every time.” Will Brown, Will Brown Hair, Henlow.

“My team is really enjoying using TIGI Copyright Colour and Care. The brand has really inspired all of us and we’re seeing the results with increased retail sales. We’ve had great support and training from TIGI, but the main thing is that our clients love the products and are noticing a real difference to their hair. THE TREND GOLDEN SANDS

Summer always conjures up images of sun-streaked hair that’s been gently tousled by a tropical breeze, but most clients don’t have time to sit on the beach waiting for it to happen naturally – they want these looks in an afternoon. “I’m seeing more guests moving away from harsh, ashy tones and towards a warmer palette – think champagne, golden and copper tones,” explains Lloyd Court, colour director at Skyler London. “If a guest is looking for a transformation like this, my suggestion would be to add warmth slowly.” This kind of blonde is all about looking healthy, bringing a brightness to both the hair and skin. “Rich and warm without being too heavy in tone, this look is perfect for fairer complexions flirting with the idea of copper, or mousey brunettes wanting to liven up their colour,” says Jason Hogan, advocate colourist at Josh Wood Colour. Krysia Eddery, owner of Perfectly Posh Hair Design, agrees that this trend enhances the hair rather than changing it. “Soft, faceframing hues made up of golden flecks and caramel tones is a popular option,” she explains. And clients with darker hair can also be encouraged to embrace this trend as Alexa Chung’s Balayage Ambré for L’Oréal Professionnel INOA proves. “Brunettes are getting in on the action by having more tones put through the hair instead of the traditional all-over colours,” says Balmain artisan Simon Tuckwell. “Darker brunettes want rich and glossy hair with amber, gold and caramel tones. Root Beer hair is my biggest trend forecast for brunettes, which new Balmain Paris Couleurs Couture is perfect for.” PAINT | 19

Pantone’s colour of the year is the optimistic Living Coral, a juicy, warm shade that joins a spectrum of pinks along with minty blues and pistachio greens, making it clear that saccharine shades are here to stay in 2019. “Living Coral has all the effervescence of brighter pinks from previous seasons, but is far softer and warmer,” says Sarah Black, colour expert at Linton & Mac. “The beauty of this shade is that the level of warmth and yellow gold undertones can be amped up or played down, depending on your client.” Meanwhile, cooler hues are still as sweet. “Sherbet hair is powdery yet vibrant, reminiscent of the sherbet sweets of childhood and manages to be both subtle and attentiongrabbing,” says Sarah. At Marc Jacobs, Josh Wood for Redken spoke about creating an ‘aged, vintage pastel’ on 37 models, keeping the result modern and grown-up. And there are numerous ways clients can adopt this palette, says Jason Hogan. “Rosé shades can give either a rebellious or subdued look depending on the intensity. Ribbons of this colour in the hair are a wonderful way to incorporate the trend without committing to an allover colour.” Suzie McGill and Dylan Brittain, Schwarzkopf Professional UK ambassadors and international artistic directors at Rainbow Room International, agree that these colours are highly versatile. “There are no boundaries – this hair trend can be made low maintenance for clients – by adding a smoky effect, fading out at the ends.”

Play around with brights and neons, paint high contrast balayages and sculpt highlystylised looks to create something that’s truly a work of art, reflecting the continuing individualism trend. Stephanie Gamble, co-owner of Ashley Gamble, explains: “Clients are not only more open to trying something bold but they’re finding inspiring techniques on Instagram. Rather than being intimidated by these influences, it’s an opportunity for colourists to celebrate the artistry of their craft.” Goldwell UK guest artist Neil Barton agrees that it’s the perfect time to set your imagination free and look at colour as a paint box. “This year, bold and bright colours are ontrend and a great way for clients to be experimental,” he says. And it’s easier to translate these looks from the catwalk to the salon chair than you might expect. “A smudged root technique, blurring where the roots end and colour begins, can be used or subtle shades,” says Stephanie. “Similarly, colour blocking allows you to achieve results from bold to subtle. I love the oil-slick effect, which works well with both rainbow brights and more natural hair colours.” It’s even possible to create an artwork-inspired look using just one colour, as Mark Leeson, Revlon Professional’s new global artistic ambassador, has done for the Revlon Professional Redvolution collection. Different tones of red were applied all over – a graphic look that uses shading to frame the face. “Clients who go red usually have a flair for making a statement,” says Mark. “Use contrasting reds and coppers in geometric shapes to create impact!” PAINT | 21

ALL BAR

CHRISTEL LUNDQVIST, STIL

“It was important to us as a team that we created a space where you can take time to feel creative, so the colour bar is like a little ‘thinking haven’ for ideas and mixtures. For our clients, we wanted a neater and cleaner space where they could easily sit, have a coffee and chat to us while we were mixing colour. “It’s vital to have a space dedicated to colour if that’s what the focus of your business is. We are a colour specialist salon – my other role is global creative technical director for TIGI – so it makes sense for us and clients love to be part of the whole journey. “Before you start building, have a clear vision about why you want the bar and how you’re going to use it, as it can be a multi-functional space throughout the day. “And the design is so clever as it can be super-neat but very creative at the same time.”

COLOUR MIXING USED TO BE CONFINED TO A DINGY ROOM FULL OF DISCARDED GLOVES AND MUCKY BOWLS. NOW IT’S TIME TO PUT IT FRONT AND CENTRE – ALL HAIL THE COLOUR BAR! The stereo is playing a killer Spotify playlist. You’re sipping a delicious latte, scrolling Pinterest to find the precise blend of shade inspiration for your new ’do, all while a hugely talented colourist sources the correct hues from the shade charts, and whips together your bespoke mixture before seating you for your service – isn’t that the kind of experience you want your colour client to enjoy? When you’re up against affordable yet sophisticated DIY colour boxes, and many clients are conscious of the limited free time they have to spend in the salon, you need to ensure your colour experience is playing it’s A-game. And increasingly, product partners are encouraging the inclusion of colour bars to help salons impress their clients. The Salon Emotion programme from L’Oréal Professional Products Division extols the virtue of the colour bar as a chance to showcase what makes you different, bringing colour mixing to the forefront of your salon and impressing clients with your creativity and knowledge, all while showcasing the professional difference. “It’s always amazed me how we tend to hide away the most creative and visually exciting part of the colour service offering,” agrees Matthew Martin from Kao Salon Division, which offers opportunities to have a colour bar within its business agreements. It has partnered with Maletti to design a colour bar concept that can be adapted to the needs of the salon. “It creates a striking feature while being practical to the demands of dispensing and mixing colour.” So how are salons raising the (colour) bar? We spoke with some who have made them integral to their businesses… 32 | PAINT

KATIE KATON, #LONDONRDHAIR

“The colour bar is an integral part of our salon because it gives our clients a private space in which to relax, as well as access the colour books so they can choose the exact hue they had envisioned. They have the visibility to see the colour being mixed up, involving them further in the process and inspiring confidence in their stylist. “Having the colour bar as a separate space really highlights how important our colour service is, a key lesson we learned from the L’Oréal Professional Products Division Salon Emotion programme. “We plan to place a large focus on training, with a particular emphasis on the importance of a good consultation. “This keeps the team engaged, as discussing the client’s hair aspirations is what makes the colour bar so exciting!”

LISA WHITEMAN, WHITEMAN SOHO

“With my colour bar I wanted to make sure everything was accessible from the stylist’s point of view and was easy to use. The colour bar is the main focus of the salon and needs to be clean and tidy, the same way a real bar should be. We have the whole range of Goldwell colour and additives on show to encourage creativity. Every bit of the bar was designed with storage and the tools needed to create the perfect colour. “The colour bar makes the focus of the salon more professional. It’s difficult to attract new clients for colour as they are very wary of change and it helps them to have faith that you are a true colourist that cares about their hair.”

“UNAPOLOGETICALLY RAW, OUR Collective Sessions are an opportunity for us to get together outside of working hours and play. Some might ask: ‘why?’ We would always answer: ‘why not?’ “Our Collective Sessions are an open invitation for all of our team to come along, whether it’s to create or just to observe. It’s an opportunity, away from the hustle and bustle of busy salon life, to get creative, experiment and have fun doing so. “As we have decided to shoot all of our own imagery, these sessions have allowed us to take back control of time and create content with an original perspective. We can shoot what we like and when we like, if only for four hours after work, using two of our apprentices as models, with an open brief, like this P[ink] series. “We love the creative process when planning for a project a few times a year, but what if we turned that

into a few times a month? I recently decided to take up photography, and Jordan Massarella, our 2018 It List Rising Star winner, is preparing to head his own creative colour course in partnership with L’Oréal Professionnel. This gave us the perfect opportunity to test out some ideas with stylist Ben Jones, play with colour and shoot in a relaxed environment with zero pressures or expectations. Our Collective Sessions were born. “We approached our first session with few assumptions. This was a collaboration between the three of us and we wanted to keep it organic and open. A busy salon can be so demanding, so curating content for our social media platforms can be tricky. We are always looking to create original content, in particular for our Instagram, and now we have the perfect platform!”

NEXT YLAEVGEEL BALA

BEYOND BALAYAGE HAIR PAINTING IS MORE POPULAR THAN EVER, SO WHEN EVERY SALON IS OFFERING THE SERVICE, HOW CAN YOU STAND OUT? LET US TAKE YOU FURTHER…

It takes a true artist to master balayage, to be able to balance the play of light and shadow in a flattering way. Yet the service has saturated the vocabulary of consumers and is showing no signs of slowing in popularity. In the first half of 2018, balayage and hair painting had the biggest impact of the year on hair services in the UK, with a growth of 22 per cent in transactions and a 29 per cent increase in revenue, according to research by Kline PRO. Ever-evolving, the world of colour waits for no one. From playing with different methods to the stand-out shades of the season, now is the time to take your balayage skills to the next level.

PASS THE BISCUITS

Bold or unusual colour may have shown, after recent years, huge growth but flattering balayage has become a staple to many salons. Achieving the perfect, biscuit blonde is not easy, but one thing that has changed, thanks to the proliferation of the technique, is the products available. “From balayage film and extra-wide foil to highlighting boards and wow combs, we now have access to so many more tools to make balayage applications much easier and quicker,” says Nancy Stripe, colourist and balayage specialist at Reuben Wood Creatives in Manchester. This year we’re seeing a move away from brilliant golds and ashy tones towards softer, biscuit-hued shades. “Finding the balance between cool and warm is the key to perfecting the biscuit blonde look,” advises Sarah Black, colour expert at Linton & Mac in Aberdeen. Heralded as this year’s most on-trend balayage colour, biscuit tones should be a blend of creamy clean tones and warmer, golden hues. “The balance means that the colour is extremely wearable, flattering against both warmer and cooler skin tones, and is brightening against the complexion,” Sarah adds. One of the biggest selling points for balayage is its easy maintenance cycle – growing out naturally for a lived-in feel, which only feeds into the toned-down, natural approach to colour this year. “We’re taking inspiration from the nude make-up trend. It’s a look that’s barely there, creating a youthful glow and soft, natural tones with playful hints of illuminative blondes in focal points,” explains Kerrie O’Reilly, TIGI Academy technical creative director. CHANGING THINGS UP

A mastery of techniques can result in some unexpected combinations. As a specialist in balayage, Nancy Stripe was particularly impressed by the masterclasses she attended by Australian artists, who brought some new and innovative ideas from Down Under to delivering that perfect sun-kissed blonde. “Bixie Colour and Edwards & Co in Sydney actually use a lot of foil to create their balayage looks, so they’re able to get the maximum lift that sometimes isn’t possible with traditional freehand application. They then use zonal toning to soften out the roots and it really gives a flawless finish,” she explains. “Learning when to use which technique has made such a difference. Freehand and foil both have a place in lived-in colour, and that’s what I am now teaching to my students.” Combining classic foil techniques with freehand painting also brings a level of sophistication to the look – something Benjamin Close, owner of Benjamin Close Hairdressing in Bangor, has been experimenting with. “My clients love seamless colour but would like that classic element back into their hair,” he says. “The highlights help create that precision colour with a soft feel towards the front of the hairline, whereas balayage creates that lived-in colour, allowing the stylist to create pops of brighter shades where needed.” “Foils can be used to create beautiful bright contours and they will help to enhance the neutral negative space in-between,” adds Gareth Williams, creative ambassador for Headmasters. “This is a return to super-polished hair, so shine is key.” Colour-centric salon Skyler London is also seeing a real upswing in highlight-balayage combos, with colour director Lloyd Court noting that “combining highlighting and balayage techniques creates the perfect balance of depth and brightness to the hair”. Salon Sloane’s John Vial recommends layering a tint over your balayage work to soften the look and remain on-trend for 2019. “People are going to go back to blanket colour, though all is not as it seems; natural blanket colour is not uniform from root to tip. We begin by pre-lightening the hairlines and the ends, before applying an all-over tint to give gentle differences with the appearance of block colour.”

Rather than focusing on weaving lighter colours through the lengths, you can even flip the idea on its head and go to the dark side. “This year we’re moving on to the depth it can create – rather than the lightness. The darker elements of the hair will be the focus, adding depth and dimension to the hair,” explains Sarah Black. Cool-toned brunette balayage work has become something of a specialty for Mallory Eaton, colourist at The Bespoke Salon in Scottsdale, Arizona: “It’s one of those looks that can be worn through every season. This technique works for both a blonde that wants to go dark but not too solid, or someone with darker hair that is wanting just a hint of movement throughout. “Keep that invisible finish by using upward stokes when blending any lines. I always smudge and bring it down past the start to really make it soft.” The best element about balayage is that it is so customisable. Whether you’re sticking to bronde or using the technique for wilder colour choices, the flexibility means that each session is a brand-new experiment.

OPINION

ARE YOU READY TO COLOUR TEXTURED HAIR? Zoë Irwin for Wella Professionals using Illumina Color Opal Essence

CLIENTS WITH AFRO HAIR ARE INCREASINGLY EMBRACING THEIR NATURAL TEXTURE… AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF COLOUR. ZOË IRWIN, UK COLOUR TREND EXPERT FOR WELLA PROFESSIONALS, WARNS UK SALONS TO PREPARE…

2018

THE UK HAS SEEN a rise in women transitioning from relaxed straightened hair to wearing it in its natural form. Over in the US, Mintel reported that women with natural texture overtook those using chemical straighteners and relaxers for the first time. Without the sensitivity caused by relaxers, and the very silhouette of the hair changing dramatically, what’s followed is an incredible surge of hair colour experimentation, from vivid brights to delicate and rich tones. I’ve seen it from Coachella to Brooklyn, from East London to West, and it’s been an influence for my debut trend launch as Wella Professional’s colour trend expert – Colour Texture Embrace [pictured below left]. From freehand ‘Pintura’ colouring techniques, to global applications of bleach that are then dyed to pretty pastels or vivid brights, these colour trends are as popular on women as men, making this a huge market for hair colour and education. I’ve discussed this trend movement with women in the beauty industry, and such was the interest and desire for more information on colour techniques and availability across the UK, I couldn’t help but wonder… is your salon ready for this? It’s odd (not to mention outdated and downright wrong) that clients with textured hair can’t just walk into any salon to get their hair done. Hair is hair in its many forms. Training for Afrotextured hair should come at the apprentice stage and follow through a stylist’s ongoing education. By narrowing their market, hairdressers are missing out. It’s important to have knowledge on products that work well in textured hair, as well as education on how to weave and colour and style. According to The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, AfroCaribbean women spend six times more than other ethnicities on beauty and hair services – six times! This is incredible – there are exciting opportunities just waiting for savvy salons who want to serve people with ALL types of hair texture. I’m hoping changes in hair education throughout UK salons follow, in terms of techniques and ideas as much as hair theory. It’s time to immerse yourself in textured hair education – we’re at the start of something very exciting, and it’s about time!
