SARA BAY COUNTRY CLUB PURE GOLF PRESERVED by Richard Cook, Sara Bay Member As a new newcomer to Sarasota, playing golf at Sara Bay has been a total joy. Becoming a Member of this remarkable Club was one of the best decisions I ever made and I was very pleased when asked say a few words on the Club’s behalf. Sara Bay is not the typical Florida course with sweeping fairways, threatening water hazards, and mind-bending sand areas. It was designed, in 1926, by Donald Ross who believed that getting close to the green should not be a battle but great skill should be required to get the ball in the hole. Nothing has changed. Over the years, many improvements have been made to fairways and greens but the integrity of the Donald Ross design has been maintained. He was proud of his achievement at Sara Bay and would have compared it favorably with his work at the Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey, and at Pinehurst No.2 in North Carolina. The challenges of Sara Bay were recognized by the great Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Babe Zaharias, Patty Berg, and others who competed at Sara Bay in its early days. Bobby Jones remarked that Sara Bay was “a true championship layout, and the course is one of the finest I have seen.” We cherish the Club’s history. Sara Bay is a friendly, member owned Club with a limited number of memberships available. The Board of Directors believes in preserving the Club’s history along with the traditions and values of the game. Starting times are readily available. Even in the high-traffic winter season, rarely does a round take more than four hours and walking is encouraged, a rarity in Florida. Members are encouraged to take part in the numerous championship events that are arranged throughout the year.

Our Spanish style clubhouse is delightful. There are no marble pillars at the entrance, and no one will offer to valet park your car, but we have the friendly Donald Ross Grill Room for drinks and casual dining. This and the ballroom for major events, overlook the golf course and we are proud of the elegant Palm Room where a jacket, and even a tie, may be required for formal occasions.
Sara Bay is a wonderful experience and anyone who really enjoys the game of golf should come and see what the Club has to offer. Terms are very attractive. Downtown Sarasota Living Combines Value and Lifestyle Downtown condos are at their lowest prices ever! Well maybe not ever, but prices are at their low since 2000 and adjusted for cost-of-living increases they are even lower than 2000 levels. Downtown condo prices rose steadily from 2000 to the high of the market in 2006. As they say, "the rest is history". We have seen prices fall fast from 06-09. This is great news for anyone looking to move downtown because while condo prices have fallen there seemingly has never been more to do in downtown Sarasota. I can't even begin to list all of the great restaurants and night spots in the downtown area. The activities within walking distance are limited only by your imagination with boating, fishing, parks, fitness facilities, movie theaters, fine art galleries, live dinner theater, and many other options just around the corner. Add all this to the weekly farmers market, festivals, fairs, and parades and you have the recipe for a fantastic lifestyle. Having been a PGA golf professional here in Sarasota for over 15 years most of the clients that my partner, Betty Mullinnix, and I work with are golfers. Obviously, for golfing clients one of the important things is always the proximity to a good country club or golf course. Luckily for the clients that want the downtown condo lifestyle there is Sara Bay Country Club. Just a few miles north of downtown, Sara Bay, built in 1926 by famed architect Donald Ross, is a masterpiece and arguably the most storied course in the Sarasota area. Sara Bay has hosted golf legends like Bobby Jones, Walter Hagan, and Gene Sarazen to name a few. Personally, Sara Bay is one of my favorite courses and I jump at any chance to play this magnificent golf course. I have many wonderful memories from playing this crown jewel over the years. Playing Sara Bay is like walking through a beautiful park, with a few challenging up and downs along the way. Visions of playing Sara Bay linger in my mind and quite honestly I forgot the main purpose of this article was to tell you about the fantastic value of downtown Sarasota housing. With Sara Bay Country Club just up the road and so many great activities downtown, Sarasota city life is a little slice of heaven for the golfer and non-golfer alike. While researching the downtown market for a client recently, I was amazed to find condos with full bay views for under $200,000! How about brand new construction for under $185,000. And if you are looking for a little larger you can have a 6000 sq/ft penthouse for $6.9 million. The range of value is extreme, but opportunity is certainly on the buyer’s side. Could prices go down even further? The answer is of course they can, but logically I can't see them going down more than a very few percentage points. In my opinion if you're planning on buying within the next two years go ahead and buy now. If you do think the market will continue going down, then by all means make your offer based on where you see it going. However, if you really look carefully, I think you will agree that prices here should hold steady for the time being and very soon begin to ease back up. More importantly, the sooner you get your downtown condo the sooner you can get out and enjoy the downtown lifestyle, activities, and playing golf at Sara Bay and Country Club. Special 2009 Annual Meeting Recap To all those who attended the 2009 Annual Meeting, we thank you for your support and hope we surpassed your expectations. To those of you who were unable to attend, we offer this brief recap of what you missed. Annual Meeting activities began on Sunday afternoon with a golf outing for our Executive Board Members, followed by a dinner showing and sharing our appreciation of Mr. Jerry Porter and his 27 years of service to the North Florida PGA. Monday morning was our education segment of the Annual Meeting, as PGA CEO Joe Steranka discussed the state of the Industry and the Association. Breakout sessions were led by John Reger, Tony Johnson, Mike Touhey, and Tim Spangler. These breakout sessions were used to identify the Best Practices share at the National Annual Meeting in New Orleans that will best suit the North Florida PGA and its members. At the conclusion of the breakouts, the groups came back to the panel for a question and answer session. The Panel consisted of Joe Steranka, Jack Binswanger, Honorary President; Phil Berry, PGA Career Services; and Ray Cutwright, District 13 Director and candidate for National Secretary. The next segment of the day was our Partner Luncheon where we heard from Club Satellite Network, Financial Transaction Services, and TaylorMade/Adidas. We then had our Business Meeting and Elections. The North Florida Section’s newly elected Officers are: John Reger, President; Tony Johnson, Vice President; Mike Touhey, Secretary; Jack Binswanger, Honorary President; and Dave Hronek, Tournament Chairman. In the early evening a cocktail reception was held on the lawn outside the Ritz Carlton. The crowd then gathered in the lobby and followed Bagpipers Bill Howard and Doug MacArthur into the Annual Awards Dinner and Jerry Porter Appreciation Gala. We had a delicious dinner, and all our Award Winners were honored, highlighted by Mike Bender of the Mike Bender Golf Academy being recognized as the PGA National Teacher of the Year, and Kevin Weickel of Walt Disney World Resort being named the North Florida PGA Golf Professional of the Year. Additionally, each Chapter President was presented with an American Mission Flag that flew over Iraq and was donated by Major Dan Rooney, PGA, of the Folds of Honor Foundation and Patriot Golf Day. The biggest award of the evening was saved for the Grand Finale, where tributes were given by Jack Binswanger, Mike O’Sullivan, the North Florida PGA’s first President and Chairman of the ED Selection Committee formed in 1982, Ray Cutwright, Joe Steranka, Russ Libby, Past President NFPGA and current PGA Board of Control Member, Bill McCormick, senior managing director of Beecher Carlson Insurance and treasured friend of Jerry, John Reger, Rich Smith, and finally Jerry’s daughters, Melody and Beth, and son-in-law Jay Nelson. Jerry was then presented with the Jerry Porter Cup, which is the new official trophy for the Chapter Challenge matches named in his honor, a round trip to Paris for him and his wife Peggy with airline fare from the Section and additional travel expenses from the Chapters, the keys to his vehicle which will become his own as a token of appreciation, and concluding with Induction into the Section Hall of Fame, only the 12th inductee in our 30 year history. It was an emotional evening bringing with it lots of tears and laughter, old friends that Jerry hadn’t seen in quite some time, and VIPs (Brian Whitcomb, Honorary President of the PGA of America even flew in from Oregon to share the evening with us.) But the most important thing that the evening brought was Appreciation for Jerry for all that he has done, and Love for Jerry for all that he is. Golf and Life Skills Classes The First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee tees off 2010 with “Pre-season” Golf & Life Skills classes the first two weeks of January; Jan. 5th thru Jan. 16th. “These Pre-season classes are the perfect introduction for new students and parents to see what we do and how we do it and best prepare for the 8-week Winter Session,” says Chapter Director David Windsor. 2010 Manatee County Open Golf Championship January 23th-24th, 2010 River Wilderness Golf & Country Club in Parrish, Florida will once again host the Manatee County Open Golf Championship, nicknamed “Rumble on the River.” The event will be held on Saturday & Sunday, January 23-24, 2010. The event is open to all players Professional & Amateur. Female participates will play approximately 90 percent of male competitor’s yardage. The format will be an Individual Stroke Play Championship. The Championship Flight will be for Professionals & Amateurs who play to scratch. The 1st Annual Dean Hedstrom Foundation for Melanoma Awareness Charity Golf Classic @ Belleair C.C. Putting: There has never been a truer word spoken that ‘drive for show, putt for dough’. The name of the game is scoring, to score well you must putt well. Look at the stats of the player that wins each week, they are always up there in putting, usually number one. No matter what level you play at, make more putts and your scores will tumble. In recent years, with the Tiger era really, the stroke and set up have changed alot and evolved. The old set up was one of ‘crouching over the ball’ with the eyeline and eyes on the target line with the chest and head low. This has the effect on the arms of a ‘wide V’ a very spread look with the arms. This disconnects the arms from the body. Once the smaller muscles of the arms and hands dominate the stoke, then there is a drastic change in consistency for the worse. In the more modern approach, the player stands taller with the eyeline marginally inside the target line. The arms form a
‘Long V, very connected to the pecs and shoulders. From here, the shoulders can control the triangle of the arms and produce a consistent, pendulum style stroke. The backswing and the follow through length pretty much, match. Many amateurs get told to push through to the target. In my experience, this is the worst thing you can do, as it makes you start to decelerate as your stroke is too long, producing a poor roll on the ball. Many modern players like Tiger actually ‘pull the putter back slightly’ after the hit. This recoil motion transfers energy efficiently and gets the ball rolling positively. I have included here also, a nice image of how a putt breaks. Once you get the stroke rolling the ball correctly, every putt is straight. You just aim the ball at a certain point next to the hole according to the break on the green and the speed you hit it. The slope does the rest. So get that modern Tiger style stroke and take some money off your buddies. By the way, I’m on 10%!

Sarasota Company Teaches 20% of the Lessons in America How do two golf pros from Mississippi State wind up creating the largest golf instruction company in the world? It started by recognizing a significant market need. By and large, the golf industry had no coherent, repeatable path or process for player improvement, particularly at the amateur level. Most of the nation’s lessons were taught one or two at a time, using various versions of a “tips-based” approach. Unfortunately, most amateurs have little chance of significant swing improvement from only a couple of lessons, according to both PGA and National Golf Foundation studies. In addition, 72% of golfers are visual learners, yet the majority of lessons were taught in a verbal format. It took Joe Assell and Mike Clinton, GolfTEC co-founders, nine years to develop a visual, factbased swing analysis concept and demonstrate its commercial viability. Countless technical, market, and financial challenges were overcome and ultimately, a revolutionary approach to golf instruction emerged. Today GolfTEC delivers a consistent 95% success rate, employs almost 400 heavily-credentialed coaches, and has taught over 2.0 million lessons. Their unique teaching process consists of five parts – accurate diagnosis, road mapping, progressive mastery, visual feedback and online reinforcement. Their precision swing analysis captures 24 data points (turn, tilt, and rotation) and about 80 photos of every golf swing. This is following by mapping a personal learning path to assure progress is optimized. Weekly lessons are taught using a philosophy of progressive mastery, rather than tips. But the real secret sauce comes after the lesson itself.
After countless studies and internal development, GolfTEC found that accurate visual feedback during practice was the key variable in speed of leaning. On average, about 3.0 times faster. Maybe it’s Physical... Have you ever asked yourself any of the following questions? 1. Why do I struggle to implement the good teaching my golf professional is giving me? 2. Why are there more ibuprofen pills in my golf bag than golf balls? 3. Why, when I am practicing more and more with better equipment is my golf game not responding? The answer to any of these questions could be: “Maybe it’s Physical.” Golf is a sport that requires good rotational mobility and solid core strength to be able to make a swing that not only is good for performance, but safe on your body to perform. Any restrictions in body movement can cause swing breakdowns or compensations, and limitations in good core stability could limit swing power and could cause injury concerns. A solid golf-specific training program should be focused on identifying your specific physical needs as well as training the body in movements functional to the golf swing. It should address all of the five main physical factors of golf: 1. Posture. 2. Flexibility. 3. Core strength. 4. Balance. 5. Overall strength. If any of these factors are neglected, it will limit the maximum improvement that can be attained in the other areas. For example, poor posture can limit full flexibility, and weak core strength can limit balance. This is why there is not a bodybuilder out there that can outdrive Sergio Garcia. You need to easily get into well balanced, stable postures to be able to leverage good strength to your advantage. To help achieve better balanced, stable swing movements, you need a combination of equal mobility and stability/strength throughout the body. I refer to this as needing either “WD-40” or “duct tape.” Body Balance for Performance combines manual therapy releasing skills with a customized exercise program that helps you achieve your ideal swing - a swing that performs well and is safe on your body to perform. We work with your golf teaching professional to provide an integrated approach to allow your body to more easily get into the swing positions your teacher is seeking. Here are two examples of a “WD-40” and a “duct tape” exercise. • The first is called “Leg Overs.” Lie on your back with your legs straight and arms out to your side. Lift your one leg straight up in the air. While keeping your shoulder blades flat, reach the leg over as far as you can towards the opposite hand. Hold for 2 seconds and repeat 8 times alternating to each side. •T he second is called “Seated Horizontal Chops with Tubing.” Sit on an exercise ball (or edge of a chair). Anchor the tubing into a door frame at chest height to the side of your body. While keeping the abs tight and tall posture, turn your body away from the door frame to feel this in your obliques. Do a “good workout” to each side, roughly 20-25 reps. Be sure with any exercise to perform in a safe, painfree manner and contact your fitness professional with any questions.
