NO PAIN. NO GAIN.
by Gennady Gekht, M.D. / Neurologist & Pain Medicine Specialist for Coastal Orthopedics & Pain Management
“No pain, no gain.” “The more time you spend practicing, the better you will get.” Sound familiar? Being a spine specialist at the crossroads of the Golf Universe and Arthritis Central, that is Southwest Florida, provides an excellent opportunity to observe human behavior at its most stubborn and unfortunately it’s most predictable. When it comes to back pain, saying that “it is just arthritis,” may turn not only into a high handicap, but also into an unscheduled visit to a spine surgeon. The lower back acts as the ultimate weight-bearing axis for the skeletal system. When playing golf, back pain should not be ignored. While most people blame slipped disks and sciatica, in individuals over the age of 50, approximately 40% of all back pain may be coming from arthritic joints in the back, called facet joints. Recognizing typical pain patterns seen with facet joint arthritis will lead to better pre-game preparation, more enjoyable game, and most importantly, a healthier overall. The basic truth is that human body was not designed to play golf, or tennis, or baseball for that matter. Our lower back or L-spine is an excellent tool for weight bearing and walking. L-spine is best designed for vertical (up-down) stress as opposed to the rotational stresses that dominate the anatomy of a golf swing. Our L-spines are protected from vertical stresses with a well-designed network of long muscles of the back and gelatin-filled shock absorbers known as disks. During the typical rotation of the golf swing, these structures are not as engaged. Most of the movement occurs against small facet joints
between the vertebrae. These joints are best for bending forward. The extreme rotational angles encountered during a golf swing were not included into the design of the lumbar spine. When wearand-tear sets in, a facet joint may lose its lining and the lubricant inside. The joint may then become inflamed and may actually enlarge. This will lead to a stiff and incomplete golf swing, loss of distance and loss of ball control. Unfortunately, this loss of control is inevitably interpreted as a problem with technique and thus leads to persistent, repetitive, stubborn and unnecessary driving range heroics, creating a vicious cycle that predictably culminates into low back pain. The best way to stop this cycle is to recognize and prevent it from occurring in the first place. The first signs of facet arthritis may be subtle. Morning stiffness will start to be noticed more along with mild back achiness when bending and twisting. Playing through these signals at this early stage may lead to acceleration in the progression of pain. At this point the best thing to do is rest, take a brief course of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (if approved by a physician) and conduct an overall survey of your health. Particular focus should be placed on weight-loss and smoking cessation, as these are two of the most important risk factors for developing back pain. If the pain does not ease, the next best thing may be a course of physical therapy with particular attention to abdominal strengthening exercises, stretching and massage. Once the pain has subsided, abdominal exercises and careful pre-game warm ups should continue. A conversation with a golf-pro regarding swing mechanics is very appropriate. Focus should be placed on reducing rotational forces around the L-spine and attaining a smoother swing with good follow-through. When playing it may be advisable to avoid hitting out of un-even services. Short and quick rules to preventing or slowing back arthritis are easy to remember: Lose weight, don’t smoke, learn a better swing…. and don’t be stubborn. Stop it if it hurts. PlayGolfSarasota.com

An Active, Family-Oriented Club
THE CHERISHED TRADITIONS OF COMMUNITY AND CAMRADERIE In the late 1880’s, Sarasota’s first mayor, John Hamilton Gillespie, traveled from his native Scotland to the untamed land of “Sara Sota” with his golf clubs in hand and a vision of what the natural beauty of the Florida landscape could become. For a select few, the traditions of the ancient game, family and camaraderie pioneered by John Hamilton Gillespie continue today at The Founders Club. This rare breed of golf and social club is a coveted place where residents and members cherish those traditional values and forge lifelong memories.
Golf with No Tee Times and Unmatched Club Amenities These “like-minded souls” enjoy the golf and social club lifestyle as it was meant to be, with no need for tee times, an active social calendar, a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. golf course, exquisite dining and caddie availability, all delivered with highly personalized touches. The classic, private club lifestyle does not forsake the latest in innovations, with a state-of-the art fitness facility, massage room, golf training facility with launch monitor and private meeting space with audio visual technologies. At the heart of it all is a clubhouse buzzing with life: members, family, and friends enjoying tales from the links, giggles from 10 PlayGolfSarasota.com

On the final hole of the 1969 Ryder Cup Match at Royal Birkdale in England, Jack Nicklaus stunned the golf world by conceding a two-foot putt to Tony Jacklin, for the first of only two ties in Ryder Cup history. Today, that gesture is considered one of the finest acts of sportsmanship in golf history and has inspired one of the greatest golf clubs in the country, The Concession Golf Club. Located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, The Concession’s 18 hole course sits amid ancient oak hammocks and is steeped in tradition, rules, etiquette, and honor. This extraordinary private course, designed by Jack Nicklaus in association with Tony Jacklin, is a worthy complement to that unforgettable moment in great golf history. The Concession Golf Club offers gracious Club facilities, including Bistro at The Concession by world-renowned and Zagat-acclaimed restaurateur Sean Murphy. Club Members receive world-class service while being surrounded by Florida’s lush natural settings.

Mission Valley COUNTRY CLUB Mission Valley is a premier member owned, private country club in the Venice area of Sarasota County in SW Florida. Conveniently located between main highways, just minutes away from lovely gulf beaches and boating marinas, it is easy to find via our map and directions. Our club was established in 1967 and is not associated with home development. The golf course is set in a manicured, peaceful country setting with several lakes tastefully positioned to provide a scenic view with little potential as major water hazard threats. Accordingly, our challenging tree-lined, championship course was designed to be “walking friendly” without crossing roads and with the tee boxes located close to the previous green. The average round of golf is 4 hours or less. A convenient 3-tiered driving range, putting, chipping and sand practice areas are available with range balls provided. Reciprocity with over 20 private and semi-private clubs is provided from May to October. In addition to our excellent daily dining offerings, we host many weekly/ monthly social, golfing and tennis events for our members. We also offer the perfect setting for luncheons, meetings and special events in our beautifully renovated Clubhouse and private banquet rooms. We believe that you will find the membership opportunities enticing, as our Club offers one of the best values of any private club in the area.

UPSCALE GOLF COURSE COMMUNITIES BEGIN REPOSITIONING REAL ESTATE IN THE ADJUSTED MARKET. Fall is in the air, and lot and construction prices in the upscale golf communities are falling. The upscale new golf communities that hit the market in 2006 with a frenzy of speculative buyers and investors saw construction come to a screeching halt in 2008 and 2009. Most notably, The Founders Club and The Concession Residences felt the brunt of this during the down-turn. The saving grace for these two upscale private club properties is the quality of the golf courses that are the center piece of the developments. The Founders Club course, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design, is well maintained and an excellent layout that features a wonderfully quaint clubhouse as the social focal point of the community. The Concession Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, is a sheer masterpiece. The course itself sits upon 500+ acres of land with not a road our house in site while you are playing. The Concession Golf Club, arguably the best course and private club in the state is a special place that features a 33,000 sq. ft. clubhouse that is off the charts if measuring class and style.
The Founders Club Real Estate Options Include Many Beautiful Models and Price Points.
We were very fortunate to have such high quality golf course communities come to the marketplace in 2006. And now, four years later, the real estate opportunities have certainly been adjusted to current market conditions and buyers are taking advantage of the quality and value combination. Recently, London Bay Homes purchased the remaining 86 Founders Club lots from original developer, US Assets Group. They immediately applied discounts as much as 60% to 16 lots, and offer buyers pricing or design incentives on Estate and Fairway home sites ranging from $50,000 to more than $300,000. New floor plans and elevations are just coming to market with prices starting in the $500,000’s. This season should present London Bay with some very good sales activity. Premium local builder Roy Dupuis, owner of Anchor Builders, is taking a similar angle into The Concession. “We have recently experienced an increased level of interest in new construction, especially on waterfront properties. We expect that same level of interest to expand to top tier golf course communities this season. Concession is wonderfully positioned to take advantage of the upswing. A world class clubhouse, a top ten rated course, upscale dining at The Concession Bistro and new prices on model inventory, as well as, new construction.”

SHOOTING SUBSEVENTY
HERE IN THE USA by Mark Bruce, PGA Professional
S
arasota resident brings “SubSeventy”
apparel line to the U.S. market. Along with it comes a modern European flare for golf fashion that is quickly catching the eye of golfers across the country.
Sarasota, Florida — September 2010 — Trendy, stylish and affordable can now be associated with golf clothing. SubSeventy, a British company, aims to redefine the rules of what to wear on the golf course. Modern styling and serious functionality are the ethos of the brand. SubSeventy Golf clothing teed off in England in early 2004. Their mission from day one was to produce a range of golf clothing that would inspire and excite customers. “We wanted to take golf fashion to the next level and offer some of the funkiest clothing on the market”, states Stuart Lawrence, director of U.S. sales and marketing for SubSeventy. “Since our launch, we have gone from strength to strength, continuously improving both quality and design. We are dedicated to creating unique and innovative products focusing on function, as well as style, using the highest quality performance materials available. As a result of our commitment, we are now recognized within the U.K. and Europe as one of the leaders in stylish modern golf clothing”.
42 PlayGolfSarasota.com
“Based on our success in the U.K. and Europe, we have now brought SubSeventy ‘across the pond’ and set up a U.S. distribution center. We believe our European athletic fit and trendy designs will be a huge success in the U.S. golf apparel market. To ensure this success we are working with various golf forums and media sources to create awareness of the SubSeventy brand in the U.S.” Lawrence describes himself as a ‘keen’ golfer with a love for the game and a passion for style. He spent 26 years working for several of the world’s largest sports brands and fashion houses in Europe and is excited by this new brand, and its place in the golf industry. “There is huge interest from the new wave of golfer coming to the forefront of the American and European golf tours to create their image based on distinct styling”, says Lawrence. They have already secured several tour players to help support and promote SubSeventy. Ewan Porter is riding high on the Nationwide Tour with a win to his name this season at the South Georgia Classic. He also qualified to play in the 2010 British open at the home of golf St Andrews. Eric Axley is a past winner on the PGA tour and finished in the top 10 of the U.S. Open in 2008.
Some have it. Some don’t. SubSeventy has it. Even in the best of times, it’s tough to break into the golf industry as a new company. Some have it. Some don’t. SubSeventy has it. SubSeventy will survive with their off-beat style and fashion-forward line that sets them apart from other golf companies. SubSeventy found a niche in apparel that was geared toward younger people taking up the game and even middle-aged and older golfers who are staying in shape and able to nicely wear the fashion forward garments. Best Public/Semi-Private Course The only golf facility located within the city limits of beautiful Sarasota, a golfing mecca nestled on the Gulf of Mexico coast just one hour south of Tampa, Florida. The facility sits on 325 contiguous acres of virgin meadowland adjacent to State Road 780, Fruitville Road, the gateway to downtown Sarasota and its world famous beaches. This historic gem, initially designed by Donald Ross in 1926, has grown to include two 18-hole championship courses and a 9-hole executive course. A particularly unique feature of this complex is the absence of any building development on all but one golf hole.

The Way Florida Golf Should Be... If you think Florida golf is playing through condos or a housing development, you need to experience country golf, you need to play OakFord. OakFord is unlike typical Florida golf courses. You will play through tree lined fairways and open spaces, and you will not see a condo anywhere. You might see a deer, a bobcat, an alligator, or even a bald eagle flying overhead. This Ron Garl Design masterpiece, built in 1989, has withstood the test of time. Our 27 holes are constantly groomed and our staff willing to make your day memorable. Play Florida Golf the way it should be played. OakFord, Sarasota’s Country Golf Club. GOLD BLUE WHITE RED

Your Home for Better Golf...
Capri Isles is one of the oldest semi-private golf courses in Venice. Located just off I-75 (Exit 193) near the heart of the City of Venice, Capri is perfectly situated for everyone staying in the Sarasota area. This par 72 “links” style golf course was rebuilt in 2003 with the new greens, fairways, and tees. There are now 4 sets of tees allowing the novice golfer all the way up the pro a fair test of golf.
Calusa Lakes’ beautiful wooded terrain highlights the natural setting of this outstanding 18-hole presentation. The spacious course weaves its way through a variety of pine forests and live oak-covered lake banks lending a rare mid-Atlantic feel to the course. A player-friendly course with rolling fairways, fair landing areas, no forced carries and large greens offer the players a unique and enjoyable golfing experience.
This “parkland” 27 hole golf course is situated off of exit 195 on I-75 not far from the beaches, Sarasota, and Port Charlotte. Three distinct “nines” meander through trees and over water features. The rolling fairways and undulating greens, provide the player a variety of playing strategies while testing their shot making skills. Where some courses have one signature hole, this club has many.

The G.S.J.G.A. just finished a busy 2010 Summer Program which included weekly events for our Mini-Tour, Futures Tour, and Regular Tour along with our four two-day Elite Junior Tour events for low-handicap juniors. The Tournament of Champions was held at the Ritz-Carlton Members Club on August 14 & 15. Forty juniors played and there was some really great shot-making. The juniors were excited about playing at the Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club! Our Elite Junior Tour consisted of (4) 2-day events which were held at 4 great courses throughout Sarasota County. The kids had a blast playing these fine courses and all were great hosts for the kids. These were Junior Golf Scoreboardranked events and are open to G.S.J.G.A. members and non-members with low handicaps. The G.S.J.G.A is working on increasing those numbers. The G.S.J.G.A. and The First Tee of Manatee/Sarasota co-hosted a Girls Golf Program held at The Meadows Country Club this past summer to introduce the great game of golf to local girls. It was a great program and was well attended. We also participated in the F.S.G.A. Junior Team Championships at Orange Lake Golf Resort & C.C. in Kissimmee on August 7th & 8th. Our 2011 Winter Tournament Series starts up in January and information should go up on our website in late November.

NOW THAT YOU’RE RETIRED, MAXIMIZE YOUR RETIREMENT INCOME Although much of the last decade has been an exception, historically, stock returns have outpaced inflation by the widest margin and have provided the strongest returns over the long term. Those long-awaited golden years have arrived, and you’re enjoying a well-deserved retirement. You’ve saved and invested wisely to provide a financial cushion. Where do you go from here?
FACTOR IN INFLATION You may want to start by considering the impact of inflation. With longer life expectancies, the need to finance ongoing living expenses, and the requirement to take annual distributions from retirement accounts, you’ll want to be sure your returns exceed the rising cost of living. Even at a moderate 3% rate, inflation can substantially cut the purchasing power of your savings over 20 years. A balanced portfolio of investments to maximize security while building needed profitability may be crucial to your financial wellbeing.
KEEP STOCKS WORKING FOR YOU Many people believe that retirement investing means allocating everything to investments that present little risk to principal, such as money market accounts or certificates of deposit. While the vast majority of these investments historically have not lost value, you should also consider the risk that long-term returns may not keep pace with inflation.
Historically, stock returns have generally outpaced inflation by the widest margin and have provided the strongest returns over the long term. Depending on your risk tolerance, you may want to consider keeping a portion of your portfolio invested in stocks and stock mutual funds throughout your retirement.1
A FOCUS ON YIELD Along with some stock investments, a significant portion of your principal will likely be invested in fixed-income investments to provide a consistent stream of income. How much risk (maturity and credit risk) you need to take in these investments depends in part on how much income you need.2 Government bonds of varying maturities and coupon rates typically are available to match your projected cash flow needs. You can buy bonds maturing (meaning principal will be repaid) in one, two, and three years based on your expected cash needs in those years. You’ll earn the stated rate of interest and likely have little risk of loss of principal, since you shouldn’t need to sell the bonds before the scheduled due date. The rest of your bond portfolio may be invested in higher-yielding, longer-term investments. Need money to buy a home or a car, remodel, send your kids to college, or take a vacation? Superior Bank offers a wide range of personal loan products to suit your needs.
Securities, Advisory services and Insurance products offered by UVEST Financial Services and its affiliates, member FINRA/SIPC and an SEC registered investment advisor. UVEST and Superior Bank are independent entities. Not FDIC Insured | Not Bank Guaranteed | May Lose Value | Not Guaranteed by any Government Agency | Not a Bank Deposit These materials were prepared by Standard & Poor’s for use by Donald Watson.
YOUR RETIREMENT DISTRIBUTION For many people, retirement is also a time to elect required minimum distributions (RMDs) from company pension and retirement savings plans, IRAs, or annuities. Because these distributions often involve complex analysis of income and tax scenarios, it’s wise to consult your financial advisor. Currently, withdrawals from traditional IRAs must begin no later than April 1 following the year you turn 70 1/2. After that, you must make annual withdrawals by December 31 each year.
Real-World Experience
If you have substantial assets that generate more income each year than you spend, consider sheltering some of your investments in an annuity. Your investment earnings will grow and compound tax deferred until withdrawal, when they are taxed as ordinary income. Because annuities may impose fees and surrender charges, study them closely to determine whether they are appropriate for you. When building a portfolio that is appropriate for your particular circumstances, and deciding how much should be allocated to each asset class, consider your risk tolerance and your need for income versus growth. Your financial advisor can help you find the right balance. Share prices may fall in value as well as increase, and there is no assurance that the full value of an investment in stocks can ever be recovered. 1
Bond values are not guaranteed. A bond’s market price may vary significantly from face value. Investors may receive the face value or redemption value of a bond only if it is held to maturity or call date. High-yield bonds present greater risk of default. 2
General risks inherent to investments in stocks include the fluctuation of market prices and dividend, loss of principal, market price at sell may be more or less than initial cost and potential illiquidity of the investment in a falling market.
Servicing Major Markets in Florida and Alabama

EMPLOYEE WELLNESS p r o g r a m m i n g by Dr. Ken Kaufman Employer sponsored health insurance premiums have risen 131% in the past ten years. What plans do you have in place to control the projected increases in the future? While decreasing overall benefits may be a short-term solution, it is clear that this strategy could severely undermine the longterm productivity, loyalty and retention of your workforce. There is little doubt that employee wellness programming is no longer a luxury or perk, but is quickly becoming a necessity. To control the spiraling, out-of-control costs associated with providing health care to employees, it is absolutely essential that organizations attract and retain healthy, fit employees and executives. As many organizations grapple with the different wellness programming options available, it is important to begin with the end in mind. To realize the best return on your wellness investment, it is necessary to shift the culture of your organization away from one of sickness and low productivity to one toward wellness and record breaking performance. Fortunately, numerous studies indicate that comprehensive wellness programming has become the most critical strategy to insulate organizations from the escalating health care costs that affect your profitability. In fact, as a result of fewer medical, disability and workers’ compensation claims, these studies show that for every $1 invested in a sound wellness program, organizations experience and average returnon-investment of $3.50 to $5.93. With the impending new rules surrounding the recent health care reform legislation, one thing is for sure - companies that fail to incorporate comprehensive employee wellness programming will face tremendous challenges to their profitability, productivity and workforce retention. Several factors need to be considered to get the greatest ROI from a comprehensive employee wellness initiative. First, even before starting a program, careful consideration needs to be taken in what programs your employees actually want. Starting a benefits focus group with representative employees from several departments will go a long way in employee participation in any program implemented. Studies show that the more employee contribution you get in the design of a
program, the greater the acceptance you will ultimately experience. Second, the program needs to be strategically designed. One piece of the program should naturally progress to the next step, building momentum as you go. Scheduling a biometric screening should be done before a health risk assessment, simply because some of the questions on an HSA require blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose numbers. Holding a health fair before a biometric screening and the HSA makes no sense. If you have representatives from the local diabetes prevention program available, many employees may not even know they are at risk. Its one thing to implement all these programs, incentives and educational classes, but to generate the maximum ROI, there needs to be a shift in the entire culture of the organization. For anyone that has attempted to lose weight and start exercising, it’s very difficult when you come to work to have several of your co-workers eating doughnuts for breakfast and ordering pizza for lunch in the cubicle next to you. A solid corporate wide policy transition needs to take place that encourages healthier habits and makes these habits the norm rather than the exception. From the CEO to the secretarial pool to the maintenance staff, the communication and environment should reflect the goals of the company for their employees. If that goal is to be highly productive, healthy and full of energy and enthusiasm, then a paradigm shift needs to take place. Despite the recent health care legislation, or possibly because of it, companies that invest in comprehensive employee wellness programming will not only save tremendous sums of money on health insurance premiums and disability and workers’ compensation claims. But, at the same time, position them to attract the healthiest, fit and highly productive employees and executives.
