Hello, and welcome to this new magazine, called “Get Off Your APP & Go!”
We tried really hard to come up with a name that would get the attention of potential readers. It is really evident these days that cell phones have taken over everyday activities and conversations in many cases. We are as guilty as anyone else of pulling out our phones at all times. So we thought, why not go with that catchy headline and make this magazine about things to do this summer in our area (or anytime really!).
Our 2nd Edition of “We Call This HOME” magazine really flew off the shelves. The issues were basically gone in a few months (there may be some copies around, or you can always read it online as well). Since we are not yet ready to print another one of those, we thought of this spin-off magazine. It’s great for our local businesses to get the word out about all they have to offer. We researched online and on Facebook for the suggested places to Go! Please double-check all contact information and of course, you may have to use your phone just a bit to get directions or information before you Go!. There are simply so, so many places to go & things to do, as well as businesses you probably have never known about! It is NOT possible to get them all in here. Check out all of our advertisers in your travels, who we would like to thank for their support of this new idea!
If anyone has suggestions for the next issue, please feel free to email me at linda@creativityunleashed.org or call me at (518) 842-6532 (leave message). We sincerely appreciate all of the help that was given to us by our photographer Bill Trojan, and all of the wonderful article writers and contributors in this issue.
As you will see, we placed some dogs & cats on these pages too (there is no way we could do this without giving some pets a chance at a forever home). Grab a copy, bring it with you to relax at home or on the beach. Check out the coupons on page 25 and save some money! Hopefully the information we have included will inspire you to come up with a plan and Go!
Enjoy your summer!
what we do and we are so grateful to live in and around communities full of amazing people.

The Johnstown Citizens’ Band and the Gloversville Civic Band
Their Talent and Passion Bring Joy to So Many!
The Johnstown Citizens’ Band and the Gloversville Civic Band are composed of musicians, including professionals, teachers and music loving people who come together and perform free outdoor concerts during the summertime for their communities.
The Johnstown Citizens’ Band begins its 116th year and will present 6 concerts this season!
The first concert will be on Friday, July 7, 2023 at 7:00 pm in the Johnstown Park in the middle of the downtown area! The season continues for the rest of July on Fridays, skipping August 4 (ANNUAL Block Party), continuing on August 11 and 18. (Rain place is St. John’s Episcopal Church next door to the park)
At the first concert, the band will be dedicating a park bench (generously donated by the City of Johnstown) in memory of Joe Walsh, a longtime member and conductor of the band. We will be playing some of Joe’s favorite songs.
Our conductor this year is Noel Wing, retired music teacher, and professional musician. We invite you to come hear our fabulous band. It’s a great evening! Be sure to bring a chair! Because we are funded solely on donations from our supporters, we pass a bucket at each concert to help us defray the costs of presenting these concerts!
The Gloversville Civic Band starts their season on July 5th and will also present 6 concerts this season!
The conductor for the Gloversville Citizen’s Band is Tom Gerbino, a retired music teacher. Concert Dates for this year are July 5, 12, 19, 26, August 2 and 9 and are held at the Trail Station Park. If it rains, they will be at the Lexington facility next to Littauer Hospital in Gloversville
The final concert on Aug. 9th will be held at the Lexington ARC Center Gymnasium at 127 E. State St., Gloversville.
All concerts start at 7:00pm. Audience should bring chairs and/or blankets for seating. Support and Donations can be sent to: Gloversville Citizens’ Band, PO Box 984, Gloversville, NY 12078

I decided to put the hiking trails in to share some of our incredible views and the peaceful serenity we have here on the farm.
I have recently started hiking and couldn’t believe how many trails there are so close to me. So then it dawned on me, wait - I could have my own hiking trails on our property. Not only to enjoy for myself but to share with others who love hiking. Then maybe they would visit with us in the winery after their hikes.
So you can enjoy a peaceful hike, bring a picnic lunch or we have cheese and crackers to purchase. You can purchase wine by the glass, wine flights, wine slushies, local beer, and local meade. We also have a gift shop with all locally made products. We have four trails you can hike and all of them are 1 mile and under for each one. We have maps available and ask that you sign in before and after your hike. The trails are open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm. If you would like to hike during the week or after hours of operation please call the winery to arrange that. 518-875-6919. We are dog friendly and ask that all dogs must be leashed at all times while on our property, please no retractable leashes.
The trails are free and are just for walking right now. We may possibly be planning on keeping them open through the winter for snowshoeing - stay tuned and follow us on Facebook!

Focus on Photography
Look at this photo closely. I used the beautiful Mill Park waterfall, part of Warren County’s Stewart Brook - Lake Luzerne’s outlet stream to the Hudson River, to accent ... a rock! Not any rock. A HEART rock! I often have a double layer of subject in my photos. You get the BIG picture and then a surprise subject. Makes photos much more interesting, don’t you think? Don’t get me wrong. The falls as a lone subject, would have been just fine, but the addition of the newly discovered “heart rock” added so much more to the scene, don’t you think? The brook is easily accessed and includes the Pagenstecher Pulp Mill Museum on the property.
Say Hello to one of the Lake Luzerne Town Ambassadors, George E. if you stop in to the pulp museum. You may run into Sue W. as well as any of the other Lake Luzerne Town Ambassadors that welcome you to the town. There are also many more interesting stops close by, including the Rockwell Harmon Cottage and Visitor Center, Gailey Hill one room school house, Kinnear Museum, ADK Folk School, Rockwell Falls Library, Painted Pony Rodeo, horseback riding stables, and rentals. Until next time... “Focus.”

Jessica and her family go on many family outings, so when we were coming with up with ideas on things to do this summer, we asked her if she would be willing to write an article about things her family does together. Check out the many places they have visited...
Upstate NY offers an amazing landscape that is ideal for many types of outdoor recreation. Whether you are new to the area or are a local looking for new places to spend time in nature, check out this list of my families favorite spots. All of the locations are under 30 miles from Amsterdam, suitable for all ages and experience levels and are dog friendly too!. These little excursions are ideal for anyone looking to get some exercise and fresh air while enjoying the sights and sounds of nature without hiking a mountain.
The Willie Marsh Wildlife Trail is ideal for bird spotting, picnicking or taking a leisurely walk in the woods. It is located on Willie Road, about 5 miles outside the City of Gloversville just off of Rt. 29A heading west. A small portion of the trail is handicap accessible and there are picnic tables available in a shady clearing where you might relax and eat your lunch. The trails are very well marked and include a series of boardwalks that take you in a loop over the marsh. Part of each trail goes through the woods which means there can be mud (parts are especially muddy in early spring), but for the most part the path is clear, flat and easy to navigate. The main loop is only about 1.5 miles long, so most people won't get too tired, but there are some built in benches along the way if you do want to take a rest or sit to listen and watch the wildlife.
Anchor Diamond Park is only 20 miles from Amsterdam, heading east on Rt. 67 toward Ballston Spa and it is one of my favorite spots. Nearly anyone can walk it (the main trail from parking area is accessible), the elevation gain is very minimal, the trails are well marked and there are lots of wildflowers, greens and streams throughout the grounds. The reason it's my favorite is because there is a little surprise history lesson short walk down the main path. The wooded land that makes up the park was the former site of a mansion built by Henry Walton in the late 1700's. He chose this remote location instead of Saratoga to build his family mansion and now over 200 years later, remnants of the grand home still stand in the middle of the woods. The mansion was sold multiple times during the 1800-1900's and eventually burned to the ground in the 1940's. As you walk down the main trail you will find the front porch steps, chimney, cistern and some other interesting remains. All are well marked with signs and photos making them easy to find.
Nine Corner Lake is a crystal clear Adirondack lake located on top of a small mountain in the Town of Caroga. It's a great place to go to escape the city heat or take a swim in the summer months. In just one mile of fairly steady incline (not too steep) the trail will bring you through dense woods to a wide open area with the lake accessible from several cleared areas. There is some uneven terrain, large rocks and lots of mud to navigate so this walk is a bit more strenuous than the others I've mentioned. Located about 30 miles northwest of Amsterdam, it is about 15 miles west of Gloversville on Rt 29A. The drive up meanders through the southernmost part of Adirondack park and will provide glimpses of several pristine lakes. First you will come to Peck Lake, then East and West Caroga Lakes. Green Lake, which is a small but beautiful lake comes next and sits at the foot of Cane Mountain. Canada Lake and it's waterside store and gas station are just across the road from Green Lake. Last you will pass Pine Lake, which has a public campground as well as one of the cleanest and family friendly beaches in the area. Cont’d

The Christman Wildlife Sanctuary can be found less than 20 miles south of downtown Amsterdam in the Town of Duanesburg. The beautiful sanctuary has multiple trails that run along the Bozenkill Creek, which features an impressive 30 foot waterfall at the end of the yellow trail and many smaller falls throughout. Depending on the season and water levels, kids and dogs often swim in the area where the large fall pools. If you are considering taking a dip, bring water shoes as there are slipper and sharp rocks and other possible hazards. There are several trails, a few areas with elevation gains but the trail is considered easy, well marked and has mostly solid terrain. On the yellow trail to the the waterfall there are a few places that can be narrow and/or slippery so you should use caution in that area.
Woods Hollow Nature Preserve is a great spot to walk, run, ride mountain bikes or go fishing. It’s located on the Milton/Ballston Spa border just 22 miles west of Amsterdam. It’s a pretty quick and easy drive, so a great spot to hit if you don’t have a lot of time. The trail is almost 2 miles and the loop will take you around the edge of a small reservoir and up a small incline to a flatter, tree lined path. There are a couple of sandy and hilly areas that can be a little harder to climb, but in general it is considered easy. Bring a picnic and when you are done eating linger for a bit to enjoy the sun shining down through the trees.

Green Lakes State Park | 7900 Green Lakes Road | Fayetteville, NY 13066
Green Lakes State Park’s outstanding features are its two glacial lakes surrounded by upland forest. Both Round and Green Lakes are meromictic lakes, which means that there is no fall and spring mixing of surface and bottom waters. Such lakes have a high potential for evidence of ancient plant and animal life. Another special feature of the park is the 18-hole Green Lakes State Park Golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones. Visitors can also snowshoe in winter, and there are 15 miles of trails that cross-country skiers can use.
Thanks to a grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a Hippocampe Beach/All Terrain wheelchair is now available at Green Lakes State Park to access beach and trails. The wheelchair is available for use at no charge on a first come, first serve basis from 11am-7pm. Please check with the lifeguards at the beach for availability.
Pet Policy: A maximum of two pets are allowed in campsites and day use areas unless prohibited by sign or directive. in-residence cats at the Latham, Niskayuna, Amsterdam and Glenmont Petsmart adoption centers to see, but meetings and adoptions are now done by appt. with a preapproved application.
We are a non-profit organization dedicated to rescue of abandoned & orphaned kittens, pregnant cats, mama cats & their kittens through foster care. So many kittens are in need of a loving home.
Dottie Big Boy, Loki & Izzy
Born on 4/5/23 in family’s backyard chicken coop. We are a sweet trio, we love attention, getting petted, brushing and playtime. Izzy is the shyest of the bunch, will tolerate back and head pets, but walks away when she has had enough. Big Boy, was the most timid but has opened up a lot! He is a big softy after some work from his foster mom and lots of love. Loki is the most con dent and will show you her belly purr. She wants to be petted as soon as she sees you. We are 1 year old and truly love each other. We would love to be adopted all together! Neg for FeLV and FIV.
Dottie is 2 years old and was saved by Kitten Angels from a shelter where she was on death row.
She LOVES attention but does not like to be held. She will follow you everywhere. She knows her name and will come when you call. She is not a lap cat right now, but we think in time she will easily become one. This girl is super sweet and deserves the best home. She loves pets, but doesn’t have a problem telling you when enough is enough with a gentle swat. She would need to be the only pet in the house, as she is not good with other cats or dogs.

Peeta
My name is Peeta, and I’m an awesome boy with a bright future ahead of me! I am learning how to trust people and I’ll be your Best Friend! I need a cat friend in my new home, so if you don’t have one, maybe consider adopting one of my siblings. Small dogs ok, but for now I’m not a fan of big dogs.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon came to us as a Mom, and now that her kittens are grown she has a chance to be out and around us humans. She only trusts us from a distance at the moment, but we continue to show her she doesn’t need to be. Any potential adopter would need to work with Cinnamon and gain her trust. Good w/other cats and kids.
Austin
Austin is a 3 year old Sharpei mix. He is a happy, goofy boy that loves to be outside. He does get rough when playing, but calms down when corrected. He is good with most dogs, and will need a home without cats. He would do best in a home with older kids. He knows sit and down, is super smart and wants to learn!

Rocky, also known as Blockhead is looking for a home. This handsome guy is literally the best! He’s around 6 years old, housebroken, walks well on a leash, and is just a chill dog. He has been completely fine with the dogs and cats at the shelter also.

2 yr. old Finney is a friendly guy! He has the cutest raspy voice. He loves lounging on window sills. He loves for his chin and back to be stroked. He likes both to follow you around and also do his own things! Finney is FIV+, but don’t let that deter you! Cats who test positive for FIV usually live long, healthy lives and do not infect other household pets!

Find the FUN.... in the City of Amsterdam, NY
The City of Amsterdam Tourism, Marketing and Recreation Department always says, “so much to do in Amsterdam, NY”. They are not wrong! From the many city parks, to places you can go to just relax for a moment, to exercise trails and new tennis/pickleball courts, to the city pool & the new splash pad, the disc golf in progress at Sassafras Park, to great ideas like the rock snake in Veteran’s Field! Don’t forget about all the programs available at the Amsterdam Free Library and other libraries nearby, along with the Walter Elwood Museum! There isn’t enough room to even mention all that there is do! Check out the City of Amsterdam Tourism, Marketing & Recreation Facebook page to find out about things happening in the city (then put that phone down or get OFF the computer and Go!)
Happy Summer, Enjoy it
The City of Amsterdam is thankful to the Heck Family and Alpin Haus for making the splash pad, located at Veteran’s Park on Locust Ave., possible!
Says Mayor Mike Cinquanti…
Miranda Whelly, of Amsterdam got an idea from Pinterest and Facebook about creating a rock snake where people can paint their own rocks and add to it and see how long it can get. She got permission to start our own in Amsterdam.
Miranda painted the head and made a sign so that people who don’t have access to her Facebook page will see it on the bridge and know what it’s for. The rock snake is located on the MVGO Bridge. If anyone wants to paint a rock or two, please do!
Let’s see how long we can make it!
“Their contribution of an ice skating rink for winter use and this splash pad during the hot months was a brilliant combination, which will have a yearlong impact on recreational opportunities at Vets. And a huge thank you to our City engineers, DPW, Recreation Department and Water crews for performing much of the work necessary to construct this new water pad and make it operational.
The Splash Pad is open every day from 9am - 9pm

This poor overbred girl was going for a walk today when she noticed an open car door and she pulled to jump in. She is DESPERATE to get out of the shelter from the loud overwhelming shelter environment. It’s breaking her. Ember came in as a stray and unfortunately nobody claimed her. She’s housebroken, gets along with other dogs with a proper introduction, and loves to smell the green grass. Ember is just one of many great dogs at the shelter just sitting in a cage waiting to enjoy summer with a family.

Car Shows are a Sweet Ride!
Oh it’s car show season!! Now it is time for my parents and I to decide, do we go?, and to which ones. Oh I would love to go to them all, but when you are driving an original 93 year old car, that may not be possible when your top speed is about 35 to 40 mph. I am not the person you want to follow on a highway for long.
When I am looking to participate in a Car Show that I am interested in, I first inquire about the reason for the car show. Who does it benefit, where are the funds collected throughout the car show going to? Do these funds stay in the community? Most monies are attained though the registration of each car, truck and motorcycle at car shows - although, we may also do a 50/50 raffle and raffle off baskets. Participants are able to have their entries judged and may receive an award for their entry in turn for registering.
By Renee Hohensheldt
Some people may ask, “why do you want to show your auto?”. Most of the time, I drive my parents 1930 Ford Model A to the shows because for me, I enjoy driving it. The look on people’s faces as they are waving at me as I drive by and blow that old time Ah-oo-gah horn is priceless. My parents have met many friends by attending car shows and now that they are getting a bit older, I truly love to be able to see them sit behind their Model A and not only visit with other car show enthusiasts, but meet new people that come to see all the entries. People are amazed that they have a car that is 93 years old. Yes the washing, waxing, maintenance can get costly, but for us, the pros out weigh the cons.
Car shows are a great way to help a cause and there is a bonus - you get to meet new people, make new friends and see the smiles on spectators faces when they are viewing all the entries. Come bring the family and join in on the fun at this themed car show coming up: Christmas in July Car Show July 9, 2023 @ 12:30, at Advance Auto Comrie Ave Johnstown, NY. First time for this one! Decorations, music with a Rocking Santa DJ and lots of car show drivers that are happy to discuss their entry. Don’t forget to stop and say hi to my parents and see our Ole girl!

Have you been thinking about getting away?
Whether it’s for the day or longer...
Let’s GO!
Column by fine arts photographer and wanderer Sue Clark. M.Ed. (AKA Mustang Sue)
Destination: Lake Luzerne, NY in the Southern Adirondacks.
Hello all.
Let me introduce myself properly. Sue Clark is my name. A M.Ed. degree explains my style - a combination educator, storyteller and fine arts photographer.
I’m also a car enthusiast, a twin, a writer and a wanderer. That’s the short list. I find many “out of the way” places through my wanderings... and record said wanderings/ discoveries with my trusty camera beside me, whether that be my Canon DSLR or cell phone camera. Believe it or not... the advances in cell phone camera picture quality simply blow me away nowadays, so I find myself using the cell phone camera more often than not.
I start my “Let’s Go!” column with the name of the local destination, post hours and contact information, give a little history about the destination, and include some photos.
BTW... it’s always good to call ahead to any travel destination to confirm hours of operation.
Yes. Linda said I would not get rich producing this column... yet. OK then. I’ll be doing it for the fame. BTW, I’m not a historian by profession. My writing style is more like a storyteller/educator/entertainer. So pour yourself a glass of your choice, and come along for the ride. We all could use new places to visit that won’t break the bank.
Towns close by: *Saratoga is approximately 25 miles south. *Lake George is approximately 10 miles northeast.
If Grammarist defines a “hop, skip and jump” as a short distance, well then... that certainly defines a road trip to Main Street, Lake Luzerne. And what a main street it is! You see, that area is called “Lake Luzerne Heritage District” for good reason. It has numerous places of historic interest! You’ll find me on Sundays from 12-3 pm through Columbus Day at the historic Rockwell Harmon Cottage and Visitor Center, at 37 Main Street in Luzerne. The cottage has a big back porch overlooking the Hudson River. Feel free to bring your comfy folding chair and sit out on the back porch. It’s lovely in the summer and fall. The Hudson River down below talks to you as you enjoy the breeze. On Main Street you will also find the Adirondack Folk School, which showcases fabulous crafts in their gift shop. They are open 7 days a week. Down the street is the restored one room Gailey Hill Schoolhouse. Across the street you’ll find the Kinnear House Museum with its own gift shop. Up the hill in Mill Park beside the beautiful falls and walking trail, you’ll find the historic Pagenstecher Pulp Mill. The stream here empties into the Hudson River which then flows down into the Atlantic Ocean! Wayside Beach is found up by the main road of 9N.
Unless otherwise noted, most of these buildings are open on Sundays, in the afternoon, 12-3, through Columbus Day Weekend. The Rockwell Harmon Cottage and Visitors Center is open Thursday - Sunday during the summer in the afternoon, and only weekends in the fall. When the buildings are open, you’ll find an “open” flag out front. If not open, you can peek through, let’s say, the Gailey Schoolhouse windows. You can also walk to the Rockwell Falls Library. Check the library site for year round open hours, visiting lecture series, and programs. Always entertaining! And don’t pass up seeing the cascading falls at the end of the street. Always open! The Hudson and Sacandaga Rivers meet here. The view in this area is breathtaking. Bring your camera!

Lake Luzerne and surrounding areas in Warren County became well known for their dude ranches back in the day, so much so that this area was called “Big Hat Country.” Earl Woodward was the man who started the dude ranch era of Lake Luzerne many years ago. He bought up /built /sold many properties in the area including numerous dude ranches, homes and a rodeo.
The “western style” dude ranches he built catered to the big cities, where lots of young single female factory workers, many NYC born and bred, were in need of clean fresh air and a break. Ranch brochures and advertisements enticed them to come to this area for R and R. Once here, many fell in love with an Adirondack cowboy and moved to the area! They then got married and raised families here. There is still much evidence of the dude ranch era here. Log houses. Horses. Rodeo. And more horses! There are still many horse back riding stables to choose from locally, including Mountain View Rocking B Ranch, (formally the historic Bennett ’s Riding Stable) and Ruggiero’s, down by the historic Painted Pony Rodeo. You can find all on line, and make reservations for fall riding. I for one prefer crisp fall days to ride a horse. Nowadays I just like to sit in the saddle and have a quiet walk through the forest, which these stables offer. I don’t need to be Annie Oakley anymore! In winter, sleigh rides and snowmobiling rule. So check back with those business websites as seasons change to see what they are offering.
If you’re getting hungry while in the area, there are a number of great places to eat in Hadley/Lake Luzerne area. Try Nettle Meadows “Hitching Post Tavern” for eats. Open year round. A bonus here - the Hitching Post building is historic. It’s a well-preserved example of old school Adirondack log style architecture. The gift shop carries Nettle Meadows ºfamous artisan cheeses and many more items. The Longhorn Saloon is a destination ride for many folks riding their motorcycles. Music is offered most weekends there. Harris Grocery makes great “to go” sandwiches, side dishes, and desserts too, if you are on the run, or going for a hike. Bend of the River Golf Club is an excellent golf course, located in Hadley. The Rockwell Falls General Store, AKA Hadley General Store is serving food too. Joe’s Mini Mart makes great to go subs. Rocco’s II serves hot fresh pizza and more. Lake Luzerne market also makes great sandwiches and other go to foods!
Note: As the colder weather approaches... some establishments may offer shorter opening schedules, or may close for winter season. Always call ahead (or Google) for day/hrs open. There is SO much to do in and around Hadley/Lake Luzerne area, you won’t be lacking for activity

Just a reminder, when you are adopting a pet remember to take the time to meet the scared ones, the shy ones, the ones that don’t stick out to you, the ones with the boring colors or missing limbs, the older ones, the frail ones. They have not given up. They just need you. And maybe you need them too.

When Montgomery County moved its county seat from Johnstown to Fonda in 1836, the transition was marked with the construction of the impressive Greek Revival edifice, known to many today as the Old Courthouse. Adorned with Ionic columns and topped with a gold-leafed dome, the building has seen numerous changes over the past 185 years. Many various trials occurred within these walls including two murder cases ending with executions in the courtyard and an 1839 libel suit involving James Fenimore Cooper.
Despite the removal of the court proceedings in 1892, activities continued to be held in the Old Courthouse. From the funeral of a Revolutionary War soldier, to the services of the Reformed Church, to the meetings for social organizations, to political functions and office space for county departments, the building has never been vacant.
After a series of transitions, the Old Court House continues to retain its magnificence. Fortunate for genealogists and historians alike, the building has been home to the Montgomery County Department of History & Archives since 1934. As the department’s collection grows, so too does the number of individuals amazed at the history of the building in which they sit.

How many of us can say that they truly remember their third grade teacher?
I do! It was Jean Amy Swenson (her last name was Waterstreet when I had her for a teacher) She was wonderful! Books are what I remember so well about third grade at Vrooman Ave. school. She read us James and the Giant Peach. She stood by the window, and the way she read it felt like we were right there in the story. Each of us students also had the little “Hot Dog” cut out with a strip around the belly of the dog. Every time you read a book and let the teacher know you got another strip added to your dog. I can honestly say that she fostered a love of reading in me and I am sure she lives on in the hearts and minds of the many other children she inspired over the years.
At the Spring Fling this year we asked folks to let us know about positive things in the community. A friend, Beth, came over to our table and said to check out the “Jean Amy Swenson Literacy Fund” I went over and met Robert and learned about this wonderful program that was started in my favorite teacher’s memory and knew we had to get this in print!
~ Linda Palmieri
The Jean Amy Swenson Literacy Fund
My wife, Jean Amy Swenson taught in the Amsterdam schools for 32 years before retiring in 2001. She liked to joke that she had closed down half of the schools in the system. She did her student teaching at Academy Street school, which is closed. Then she started teaching at Ft. Johnson, which closed. Her next assignment was the small Florida school which also closed after a couple of years. From there she went to Vrooman Ave., which closed in 1975 and reopened as Marie Curie later that year. After a year of maternity leave for the 1978-79 school year, she was reassigned to McNulty where she stayed until retirement.
After retiring, she continued to teach as a tutor and as director of the Montgomery County Literacy Project where she helped people get their GED. Along with a partner, Bette Errig, she started the Comfort Zone program at Trinity Lutheran Church where she quickly added a book table to give books to both adults and children. When they first started, they weren’t sure if they could sustain the table, so there was a rule; One book per person, per month. It didn’t take long before she was confronted with a youngster who said to her, “I’ve got a problem and they told me you are the only one who can fix it.” “OK,” was the reply, “what is your problem?” “See this,” he answered, holding up a book. “I really like this book and want to read it.” “OK,” she responded. “You can do that.” “But, you see this book?” he said, holding up a different book. “All my friends tell me this is a really good book and I want to read it too!” Needless to say, that was the end of the one book rule. The kicker came when the boy then asked her, “When do I have to have them back?” “You don’t,” she answered. “You mean it’s mine to keep, forever?” asked the kid. And he was thrilled when she told him that was so. He had never owned a book in his life. All he had ever had were library books.
The fund was started after my wife died. My daughter and I were finishing her obituary and realized people were going to want to make donations in her memory. My daughter said to me,” Mom always believed in reading and gave out books as a part of Comfort Zone. Why don’t we start a fund to buy books for kids?” And that is how it all started.
Since we didn’t have an organization or anything at that time, the funeral home offered to let people send their donations to them while we took care of the organizational details. Unfortunately, the name we originally picked, “The Jean Amy Swenson Literacy Trust,” requires special State permission to use the word “Trust.” We quickly decided that the time and paperwork involved was too great and changed the fund’s name to its current one. Once we had our not-for -profit incorporation and our 501(c)3, we thought we were all set to go.
Unfortunately, even with documentation, the bank wouldn’t let us deposit checks made out to the Jean Amy Swenson Literacy Trust in the Jean Amy Swenson Literacy Fund’s account. So, we had to send all the checks back with a letter of explanation. Most people were very understanding and simply wrote us a new check. Since then, we have had no trouble and many, if not most, of our original donors have continued to support us. We have received not only monetary donations, but book donations as well. We do accept gently used books in good condition with no marks or writing that we give out at various events. We have had booths at Amsterdam’s Spring Fling and Italia Fest, the Veterans’ Time to Thrive car show, and Trunk or Treat. We have also co-sponsored the summer reading program at the library. This year, we are realizing one of our goals by giving every child in McNulty School a new book for the summer. McNulty was chosen as the school where Mrs. Swenson taught for most of her career. Our hope is that in the future we would be able to provide books for all of the elementary children in Amsterdam.
We are a small operation trying to do big things. Consequently, we are always looking for volunteers who can help sort books, put stickers in the books, help give out books at events, and serve on our board. There are dozens of small jobs that come up from time to time that we can use help with, too. If you are interested in getting involved or making a donation to the fund, call Robert at (518) 842-2280 or email: info@booksforkidsfund.com

Stop by and see the new field, bleachers and Hall of Fame!
The Parkhurst Field dedication ceremony is in the books! Phase One is complete but there is still quite a bit to do to build out three more regulation fields! As of June 18th, congratulations were in order for Kelli Faville
board on another great season at Parkhurst Field. At this time, it’s All-Star Season and Travel Ball Season at Parkhurst Field. The public is welcome/encouraged to come down and watch some quality baseball for the rest of the summer!
To celebrate the dedication ceremony, as well as the hard work, dedication and commitment of so many volunteers, a video was assembled showing the construction of the new Parkhurst Field from July 2022 through the first game on April 28, 2023. The Parkhurst Field Foundation thanked NYS, Fulton County, the City of Gloversville, the Parkhurst Board, GLL, Nicole Battisti, Kucel Contractors and everyone who made Phase One a reality!!
To view the video, go to the Parkhurst Field Facebook Page!
On June 13, 1906 - The Grandstands were freshly painted... Many have asked why the new Parkhurst Field is vintage green. Here is the answer...
The original grandstands were painted moss green with white trimmings during the week of June 13th, 1906. The only reference we have for what moss green was in 1906 was a hand painted postcard from that decade of the station in Johnstown. With the help of Benjamin Moore in Johnstown, their “Historical Collection” was used to determine the right custom mix. Parkhust Field thanks Paul Connelie and his crew for all their help in formulating, manufacturing and donating the perfect paint for our historic park!
