The ACHIEVERS issue

L

28

Life has a funny way of catching your attention through what it throws at you and on this note have you ever wondered what other people go through while you are complaining about your own troubles? My goodness I have learned so much through the stories that we have featured in this issue, if you’ve never been molested, you’ve never seen the inside of a prison cell, thank the Lord and thank Him every day. There is a reason why we have called this issue THE ACHIEVERS issue, the incredible people we’ve shed light on will leave an impact like none before. The spotlight belongs to Mya Auguste and Diamos Demerritt , both shared their incredible stories with us with the hopes that they can tell the world about where they come from and where they are trying to go. We commend them in their endeavors and wish nothing but success for their paths. On a lighter note Josh Byer and Stephen Wilson from Canada are 2 incredible visual artists that are leaving their mark in the world of art. We’ve been privilege to be able to feature them all while introducing our brand new writer Laura Shirk.

An issue filled with inspirational stories such as how Lola Chel, our cover photographed by our special guest photographer Joe Wesley, created her fame through social media while building her modeling career. Not to mention that our writers never disappoint each columnist brought something to the table that all of us can learn from. Another one for the books, we can’t thank you enough, our contributors, photographer, artists and writers for making #28 one of my favorite issues.

e’ve had the pleasure to feature Josh in our last issue with the hopes that we would get to bring you a deeper conversation with him in the near future, well this moment has arrived! Josh Byer is an incredible visual artist currently residing in Vancouver Canada, yet exhibited around the world. We are impressed to say that he is an international abstract artist who fathered the modern art technique called Faux Fauvism, he has exhibited alongside Picasso, Dali, Matisse, and the Group of Seven just to name a few. Josh is also a grant recipient of the Canada Council for the Arts. His work has won awards from the Montreal World Film Festival, the Northwestern Film Festival, the LEOs, and Kodak Canada. He is currently preparing for “Le Néon”, his first large-scale exhibition which will open on September 14th, 2018 at the Eileen Douglas Gallery in New Westminster, Canada.

We had the privilege of getting to know him a little better and makes his art so unique.

Inventor of faux Fauvism

www.creativmag.com | Sept - Oct 2018 | CREATIV | 31

Featured Story | Josh Byer I have to ask what is Faux Fauvism I have never heard of this technique before and am curious on what it entails? Faux Fauvism is inspired by the work of Matisse and the Fauvist art movement. I have mixed his technique with elements of Urban art, Cubism, Folk Art, and Pointillism to create my own style of painting. My palette draws heavily from the neon sensibilities of the 1980s. The goal of Faux Fauvism is to pinpoint the moment in cognition when pattern recognition occurs. Let’s bring it back a bit, when did you first know that you wanted to be an artist? What was your first masterpiece like? My mother filled our childhood home with paintings and prints and sculptures. Thanks to her, I’ve always loved art. My first major work was CITY. It’s big and pink and took about a thousand hours to complete.

You’ve exhibited in numerous places along side the names of famous artists, would you say that it feels natural after a while or do you still get the jitters every time you exhibit? It’s a great honor but feels a bit spooky, like attending a séance. There’s a strange sense of being watched. When you create what is your thought process? Do you have a ritual that you follow? I don’t pre-plan a lot. Often there is no underdrawing. I correct as I work, 32 | CREATIV | Sept - Oct 2018 | www.creativmag.com

repainting areas over and over, making small changes and reevaluating until the composition balances. The last 5% of a piece is usually the hardest. For me, it is very difficult to walk away from a painting. What do you expect people to feel when they look at your art? Or do you leave it to the beholder to come up with an emotion or meaning? Ever seen a cloud and thought “that looks like…” I’m trying to activate a process in your brain that enjoys searching for patterns.

Becoming the great artist that you are, who inspires you the most? Thanks. I really enjoy the artwork of Otto Dix, Ed Emberley, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse. We like to leave our readers with words of inspiration: Should a young artist follow in your footsteps what would you tell them? Be kind. It’s the best way. As you can see a man a few words but full of talent we wish Josh success throughout his journey and can't wait to see what else he has in store.

t’s been one busy year for Stephen Wilson – and he shows no signs of slowing down. From coast to coast, the mixed-media artist has shared his artwork, engaged with art lovers and audiences and participated in solo, duo and group exhibitions. Known for his artistic exploration and blending of traditional craft and contemporary culture, it’s his one-of-a-kind style that captures the eye of passers-by and professionals, alike. This summer, the artist headed to the Hamptons to take part in Market + Design and Traditional Home Magazine’s Hampton Designer Showhouse.

From Dior to Dolce & Gabbana ), the artist brings color and texture to life all yearround.

Model tapestries (Wrecking Ball, Candy’s Room, In the Flesh, Run Like Hell, Young Lust, Home Again)

With roots in the fashion industry, which he considers to be his original medium and primary inspiration, Stephen has a background in embroidery and technology. From pants to pillows to paint and photo, he says what transforms something into fine art is the message. Along with creating loud, layered and large-scale pieces, he recycles designer fashion boxes into works of art and re-defines luxury consumerism, the power of a label. Tying together street art and the contemporary scene, every celebrated box tells an individual story. Described as a deconstruction of his established Luxury Series, the buy and bring home collection is perfect for vacationers.

Featured Stories | Stephen Wilson From Dior to Dolce & Gabbana (with a site-specific butterfly wall in-between), the artist brings color and texture to life all year-round. Whether creating his own work or collaborating with others, Stephen pushes the boundaries. On the go: expanding Luxury Series into Luxury Graffiti. Fascinated by the way the audience reacts to and interacts with his work (in a social media and selfie savvy world), the artist plays with the roles: observant vs. participant. With no photography experience, Luxury Graffiti is his experimentation with embroidery on a photo base. While he sticks to stitching icons, words, symbols, patches and typography to create a dimensional final piece, he strays from his creative process. The series is set to debut in the coming weeks and show at Art Basel. With Miami Art Week around the corner, Stephen is planning and preparing to present some old, some new. Coming up: CONTEXT Art Miami, SCOPE Art Show, Aqua Art Miami and Art Basel (Miami Beach). Considered the most important week for contemporary art in the United States, the “family of fairs” feature emerging and established artists from all over the world and welcome art enthusiasts from a long list of countries. Along with multi-disciplinary works and international art programs, the vibrant week invites visitors to experience a community interest and cultural impact. From shared booths to intimate settings, Stephen’s work will be on display across the city. Whether exhibited on a blank background or in an immersive environment, every piece will be selected by the artist to fit the overall feel of the fair. We can’t begin to describe how we felt reading Diamos Demerritt’s story. First let us recognize that the strength and determination of a man makes him a king among his peers and we couldn’t be more privilege to share this story with you. A Miami native, raised by a single mother Diamos surely encountered some obstacles in his young life that could have easily defined his fate. Though he had a promising future with a full scholarship in football from the University of Minnesota, life took a turn for the worse when he was incarcerated in his teens facing 9 felony charges, where 3 carried life sentences. But God had a different plan for him as he was cleared of all charges the following year. Having a second chance at life should not be taken lightly, with his passion for art, music and acting, he now displays his talent through his new web series entitled To Each His Own, shedding light on the social issues that every urban community faces. Produced by AnPu Productions, a company that he co-owns with Joe Wesley of Joe Wesley Photography, which by the way graced

our cover with his talent this month (wink wink!!). To Each His Own is a drama filled series laced with comedy and suspense. Khairy is a self-made business man who made it from nothing to something. Smooth, manipulating every situation in order to get what he desires. There’s more to this playboy than meets the eye. Aymirre is a self-driven entrepreneur who is fueled by pain. Haunted by unresolved issues, she never allows the pressure to break her. But in order to grow, one must be broken. The story follows these two and the people whose lives are either affected by or correlates with their own... Each character is a world within themselves. Yet, those worlds seem to find ways of colliding in this suspense filled series. On that note we had to have a conversation with Diamos as he wrote the script to this controversial yet artistic screenplay depicting the current situation in our society. Enjoy!

What sparked the idea of a web series instead of a full feature film? Picking between a full feature and a web series was easy from a business perspective. It made sense to build our audience from the ground up. The web series also gave us an opportunity to grow together as a production team. It also helped us to find ourselves as a company and create a lane we would control. Where did the inspiration come from for the story line? There was no one thing that inspired the storyline. It was a sequence of conversations and moments of personal reflection. The story originally followed characters Khairy and Aymirre; however, once the cast came together for the first table read, the chemistry was so powerful that I line item’d the storyline to include every character as an integral part of the overall story... thus, becoming dubbed as the “Millennial Soap Opera”.

Did you encounter any challenges in filming these series? Challenges were expected! We ran into our fair share of challenges, but nothing that severely set us back. In meetings, we always speak of being flexible and prepared for the unexpected. Every challenge we faced bought us closer together and developed a bond that solidified our foundation moving forward.

drama and comedy. On the other hand, there are a plethora of messages intertwined through the lives of the characters. Internal and external issues that are prevalent in the Urban community are touched upon. We’re not only showing the issues, but the stimulus that occurs after the fact. This web series is relatable and entertaining. Where do you see yourself taking your production company after this web series? The aim for the production company is limitless. And the great thing about it, it’s not just me. We’re a team! A group of individuals coming together to create great content and platforms for those serious about having a career in the entertainment industry. “To Each His Own” is just the start. It was pivotal to start off on the right foot. Basically, showcasing everything we’re about... from writing, acting, filming, editing, and scoring. Funding is important moving forward. This is definitely a passion for everyone involved with the company. But it’ll be even better to fuel those dreams with some funds. It’s not about the money, but it takes money to make things happen. Plus, many of the people on our team have families. Doing what you love and taking care of your family is what life is about. You have had an interesting life yourself. What words of inspiration would you like to leave our readers with? Yes, I’ve been through my fair share in this young lifetime. But it has helped me appreciate my time and the people I share it with. Instead of inspiring, I would rather empower our viewers with my life. To show them anything is possible if you’re willing to sacrifice for it. Egos don’t make dreams happen, teams do. Therefore, anything you want to accomplish in life will be determined by the people you surround yourself with. Soar high or crawl low, it’s the choices you make today that matter the most.

You act, write, produce and direct, was that always a dream of yours or did you just fall into that industry? Great question! The expression through the Arts have always been a part of my life. Growing up, I was involved in talent shows, religious productions, etc. As I got older; however, sports became the focus. It wasn’t until after my football career that I was drawn back to my passion in the Arts. Let’s talk about this particular web series, what would you like people to take away from it? Is there a message or is it pure entertainment? I want the people to know...”To Each His Own” is a fast paced series with multiple story lines that will no doubt grab the attention of the millennial audience. Artist Spotlight | Mya Auguste

When Life gives you lemons.. . you do what Mya Auguste did

I

In this day and age women, especially black women, are creating strides and breaking walls as entrepreneurs, motivational speakers and writers. Mya Auguste, is a philanthropist, community activist, mentor, speaker, sister, law enforcement officer, who shares her story and advice on how to overcome the most grueling obstacles in life in order to find your success and your peace. Mya’s story is poignant certainly not for the faint of heart. Molested at a young age, overcoming illness that could have potentially ended her life, Mya took a path that would land her he title of The FIRST Black Haitian Detective at the Port St Lucie’s Police department. Talk about BLACK EXCELLENCE. We admire so much of the impact that she had in her community that we decided to shine the light on this fierce entrepreneur. Her book , BOSSED UP ON PURPOSE , goes in a little deeper about her life and what measures she had to take to get to where she is right now. We caught up with her and the following conversation with her certainly opened our eyes to the possibilities of success.

GET THE BOOK 48 | CREATIV | Sept - Oct 2018 | www.creativmag.com

What sparked you to write this book? I decided to take the opportunity to coauthor my book Boss’d Up On Purpose to inspire and empower other women (especially brown and Haitian woman) that with God anything is possible. It’s important for woman to see a representative of themselves to be empowered to walk into their purpose. Plus I wanted others who may be going through or went through what I went through to know it’s not over and to trust the process.

What does selling this book represent for you as an entrepreneur? It’s not so much selling for me, the goal is for readers to feel that they too can overcome the fires (life’s trials and tribulations) in their lives. I want people not too feel discouraged and to have faith. Yes making money is always good, but when someone say that your chapter inspired them or they can relate and feel there’s hope, that means I have accomplished something great.

What do you expect people to gain from reading your book? My expectation is for the readers to gain insight from my coauthors and I so they too can BOSS up. So many women (and a few good men) endure a lot and let their past control them, defeat them. At times they sacrifice their wants for others. My hope is that everyone who reads the book (whether my chapter or my coauthors) to feel inspired and take courage to conquer their dreams, goals and Boss Up On Their Purpose. If I had to drive one message home to someone it would be to “trust the process and believe you are worthy and capable of achieving all that God promises you despite your past”.

Seems like life has not been kind to you in the beginning, however you overcame your obstacles, how much different of a person would you say that it made you? Omg my past has helped me more than I could imagine. I never thought I would be standing here today to say that. It’s helped me to have compassion and empathy when performing my job as a detective. It forced me to change from a victim mindset to a Victoria’s mindset. It forced

View your experience in the police force and becoming the first Haitian Detective, Black Girl Magic at that, what impact do you think this role has created in your community? Wowww, funny it didn’t hit me until I spoke at the first Haitian Flag Day here in Port St Lucie. My role has empowered young girls to achieve their goals. It gave men and women pride to see me representing our culture, especially once they see how proud I am to say I was born in Haiti. I feel my impact is positive, it’s important to show the community a different side of law enforcement. I’m such a girly girl but I will get dirty if it comes down to it with work. I hope that I represent my community

me to appreciate life and the ones who genuinely love me. It humbled me and gave me strength to share my story for those who may not have the voice or courage to do so. If you had words of inspiration for your audience what would they be? Words of inspiration JUMP FLY SOAR, whatever it is trust God and trust yourself! Know that He’s equipped you with everything you need to walk in your purpose. Own your truth, release the pain/hurt, remove negativity (even if it means family or friends) create your vision and go out there SHINE. Permission or validation isn’t needed. Oh, remember to celebrate you and then reach out to help someone else. www.creativmag.com | Sept - Oct 2018 | CREATIV | 49

Cover Story | Lola Chel How does it feel to be a working model? Contrary to what a lot of people believe it’s a mix of being ecstatic because it’s my reality, and constantly under pressure because I’m always on the go and looking for my next job. Can you remember the first time you have ever walked a runway? The first time I had the opportunity to walk on the runway was in December 2013. I was a member of a modeling troupe known as Eclipse Fashion Society at Florida international University (FIU). I was one of their inaugural members and we put on our first fashion show as a club at FIU at the end of my first fall semester. It was a bittersweet moment for me personally but it was a fundamental moment for my modeling career. You’ve also been very consistent with your blog and educating other models on how to be successful how did that come to pass? At first I started my blog so that people could keep up with everything that I was doing. But after a year and studying the analytics I realized that the blog had the most interaction when it came to things that benefited the actual readers and viewers. Due to this I did an overhaul on my blog and really focused it on elements that would assist the reader in their modeling journey. Since the change I’ve gotten overwhelmingly positive interactions and reviews! Is there any projects that you are working on worth sharing? Yes there are several! First, I am launching an ebook called, “A Stride To The Bank: How To Make Your First $1,000 As A Model”. This book will be available soon and will shed light on things every model should know, how to find where they fit in the modeling world, and where the money is currently in the industry, as well as a few other gems. Next we have my high-heel line Modele Heels launching officially in January 2019. PreOrders will go live in October 2018 so stay tuned and get your orders in early for the best deals! Lastly, I will be starting a virtual modeling school on my blog. It will be a four-week course and really get models on the right track for their modeling career. What is the biggest modeling gig that you’ve ever booked? I’d have to say my biggest gig pay wise was the three-day visual shoot I booked with Canadian Tire. I netted a couple thousand dollars after securing an additional two days from a one day booking bringing my payout up from one day to 56 | CREATIV | Sept - Oct 2018 | www.creativmag.com

three. The world of modeling is, I can say, very superficial at times because you are being judged by how you look, is there a time you can remember that you have been rejected and how did you overcome it? There have been plenty of times where I haven’t been what someone was looking for or the client went in another direction. I overcome these situations everyday by focusing on the jobs I have and do secure. By focusing on all of the amazing opportunities I have in my life I leave very little room to dwell on my rejections. What motivational ritual do you practice to keep yourself motivated? There’s a declaration that I was given by my nail tech a while back that I’ve tried my best to speak everyday. It takes about 2-3 minutes to say but it’s worth it. That coupled with prayer and meditation tends to help me through almost any situation both good and bad. You just recently graduated with a master’s degree, do you plan on ever using your degree or will that serve as your Plan B? I got my Master’s in Global Strategic Communication. That means I’ve basically received a degree that yields you skills in Advertising, Marketing, Public Relations and Digital Media all rolled into one for international companies. This coupled with my Public Relations bachelor’s degree are not only amazing to have as a Plan B they can be (and often times are) utilized in my brand building everyday. You do have a lot of fans, if there is one advice that you would like to tell them what would it be? I would tell every supporter I have to support themselves first. Be the best versions of themselves and be their own number one fan! Once you get to a place where you can authentically be yourself without the approval of anyone I believe you’ll be in a place where you can experience true joy. Lola is just incredible all around, we can't wait to see what her life will unravel. From your CREATIV family, here is to your success.

Are You Living Your Best Life?

O

ver and over we have heard the motivational quote “Live Your Best Life”. It became the saying that has been plastered all over our social media pages and in the mouth of several socialites. “Live Your Best Life” is the understanding that you enjoy what life must offer even if it’s an unexpected moment. We want to live our best in relationships, career, and lifestyle choices. It’s the only way we feel our lives are complete and compete with our peers. Even though the phrase is heard often, are we really living our best lives? Life is made up of small moments that give us great sensations that are stored in our memories. These moments become a part of our growth that turns into experiences that we have and learn from. While being in this era of social media many of these moments are captured, but we tend to miss the best of those times. How could you truly enjoy life’s precious moments if you are constantly trying to curate and edit to share with the world? We miss on all the special experiences in our life due to our obsession with social media. Living your best life includes being able to live in the current time that you are placed in. It’s about recognizing all your senses that are tingling that will connect you right back to that moment in the future. Being alive in a space that only you will be experiencing because no other person will have the same moment. For instance, think about the time we attend a concert or festival. The time spent taking videos and pictures to add to your moment is taking away from your moment because we are not recognizing what is happening. I’ve been known to go on vacations and not bring back many pictures because I enjoy being present in the action of the city and all it has to offer. Every other day a smell or a sound reminds me of the time I spent in that city because I allowed myself to enjoy the best of it. We tend to miss out on the small things in our life while searching for the major ones. Someone once told me that we spend too much time in eras that we tend to miss out on the present moment. When we put more attention on the past or future we neglect our present experiences. The past or future doesn’t exist because one has happened and the other hasn’t occurred; therefore, adding more attention to

those two-time stamps you neglect your present. Our present time is the one that matters most because we are living it now! This realization was mind-blowing because I realized how much we spend curating for our futures and preserving our past but not enjoying the time we are in now. “Living Your Best Life” is living in the present, the time of right now so that we can recall our experiences moving forward to our future. We all want to live the best life we can, but it takes work to be happy with your current moment. It’s always best to understand that your situation is always changing so you will be able to experience a different present every single day which a relief is to hear. As a creative, it’s important to live your best life because we use that to fuel our work to share with the world. When you’re on the path to living your best life make sure to soak all of life’s moments, move forward to the future and just reminisce on your past.

Have you ever paused to think about the way a child's happiness is immeasurable and often stems from the tiniest things? Wouldn't it be an amazing feat to capture the same lightheartedness and master the act of letting go, without a worry in the world? Your moment in the sun has arrived! Let's take a leisurely stroll down memory lane and return to the joy of our youth by revisiting lessons learned from nursery rhymes that still hold a special place in our hearts. Little Boy Blue: never be ashamed to 'blow your horn.' Shout about your life's true love - or the tenets of your faith - from the rooftops instead of whispering them in shame. Nothing good comes from hiding behind others in an over-zealous effort to blend. Little Bo Peep: when something of value is lost (be it love, friendship, or financial status) do not despair that it is gone forever. Most times it will return when least expected and even larger than before. Use the hiatus to fix whatever may have contributed to the loss; you'll be much stronger and even readier the second time around. Hey Diddle Diddle: sometimes the only way to rise above an obstacle is to allow yourself to get carried away with whimsy. Why limit your possibilities? Lighten your load by aspiring to lighten your attitude and stretch beyond the realm of current realities. Mary Had a Little Lamb: value every blessed gift in your world, especially those that stand loyally by your side through both thick and thin. These pillars in your life are both essential and fulfilling so use every opportunity to show how much you appreciate them. Hickory Dickory Dock: timing is everything. Countless examples demonstrate that history can be rewritten and lives forever altered in the blink of an eye. The ability to make wise decisions quickly can serve as a

secret weapon that renders you undefeatable.

Reach for the moon and you'll be sure to fall among the stars.

Humpty Dumpty: even life's largest setbacks can turn out to be blessings in disguise. Draw on new beginnings as an opportunity to rise and become larger than ever. And when you feel as if your world is shattered, pull up a comfy chair and a warm cup of chamomile tea, then harness your brain power as you calmly put the pieces back together again.

Rock-a-bye Baby: getting sufficient, rejuvenating rest is most crucial. Do not neglect much-needed time to reset and bond with your loved ones. And when life's noise attempts to grow deafening, do everything in your power to silence it instead of allowing it to silence you.

I'm a Little Tea Pot: never feel you are lost when with others. Even the smallest act of kindness can have a huge effect on the people around you, especially when they had no way of expecting it. Those that truly derive the most joy out of life give the most in service to others. Itsy Bitsy Spider: every ounce of effort counts. Though setbacks will occur, they serve to strengthen our resolve to complete the journey. Never fear that a rainy day will ruin your plans; instead use it to completely disconnect and reset, then you will be fully prepared to power through once the sunshine returns. Jack and Jill: be wary of the company you keep. Lower your standards and walls will inevitably come crumbling down; surround yourself with greatness and prepare to climb to new heights. Little Miss Muffet: don't allow anyone or anything - especially your fears - to stop you from achieving your dreams. You are capable of doing anything you set your mind to, no matter what obstacles may manifest during the journey. Jack Sprat: it's been repeatedly proven that opposites attract. Admire and celebrate the differences in others - after all, variety is the spice of life.

London Bridge is Falling Down: failure is inevitable. The most successful, inspirational people fall repeatedly, but refuse to stay down. Learn from your mistakes and graciously share your largest life lessons with the next generation. The Muffin Man: it is impossible to truly "love thy neighbor" if we know nothing about them. Strive to make a genuine connection as often as possible and you will always be prepared to experience infinite delight. Rain Rain Go Away: when cloudy skies threaten to darken your sunny outlook on life, push them back to yesteryear with renewed determination. Lock into what motivates you most to ensure all of your days shine bright and beautiful. Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe: refuse to leave life's big decisions to chance. Obtaining big results requires making big choices, and often involves taking large risks. Draw on the expertise of those that have gone before, and do not be afraid to redefine what is possible. The treasures of fearless imagination, unbridled creativity and valiant determination are precious and should never be stifled. Always embrace the inner child within. She's there to keep you from taking life's unexpected turns - and yourself - too seriously. "Tag, you're it!"

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star: dream BIG. The moment you accomplish one objective, it's time to work towards an even larger goal.

Dating tricks these days are like fad diets—you’ve tried one, you’ve tried them all! Trying to get the man you want to like you, is like the trendy recipes we know all too well that unfortunately, vary with results. So what’s the trick? How does a single woman dating, find a man, fall for him and have him head-over-heels for her? I’ll tell you the secret! The secret in getting Mr. Right to be “Mr. Right for You”, is acting as if you don’t like him at all and holding back on messy feelings! It doesn’t mean you give him the cold shoulder or pretend you’re not interested. Instead, it means not being emotionally over-the-top in the early dating stages while he’s getting to know you. Often times, single women spill their guts and run men away with their mushy behavior. The men they like never get a chance to really like them in return because these men pick-up on clingy, overbearing signs from the women they were once interested in. When men sense that a woman can’t be without him or that she likes him way too much in only a short period of time, he’ll flee. Liking a man should be easy. “Easy” means remaining emotionally intact and being comfortable in being honest with him when the time arises. Women often forget, in most cases, the men they like actually came on to them initially or approached them for an opportunity in the beginning. This means, he was half way to the finish line of liking you! The man you like saw something in you that made him approach you. It could’ve been your personality, your looks or just the simple fact that he was looking for a great catch; there’s nothing left for you to do to get him to be all the way in. Again, acting as if he’s not the last man on Earth and remaining stable in your sentiments, will surely get him to like you. He’ll see you for all you’re worth and won’t be blinded by sappy tears, emotional baggage and temper tantrums fit for a five-year-old. All the dating tricks you thought were solid and kept the guy like interested, can be tossed. Go along with his flow, if it’s comfortable for you of course, and resist the urge to be a mushy mess.

Prepare Yourself For Rejection 3 am and I am rising up to start my day. Lost my keys for 20 minutes. Credit card failed to work at Kinko's. Left my cue cards on the home office desk. However, by the time I walked into my classroom that morning, I knew I was entering the room with the confidence that I was in my most genuine and professional self. I had to be. I had to be because in 1 hour I had a formal evaluation to give for the principal of my school. I knew I had no time to waste on emotions and distractions that came with rejection. We have all been there. Where exactly? That place where an important task or event is coming up, but a distraction comes in as an attempt to deter you from success. Maybe you got a call about a loan you really needed that was denied; or that contract to produce a prominent event fell through; or you are dealing with a severe consequence for a mistake you made recently. That is what I was dealing with. Overzealously I shared an article I came across within our group text. At 10 pm, it confused everyone and the content sent a panic over the air waves. There were some strong reactions from my peers. In the past, this type of failure was seen as rejection not as a mistake I could overcome. Thereafter, it would have sent me into a whirlwind of depression and anxiety. Then, it would cause me to question my abilities and effect my performance on my more pressing goals. Fortunately, I have learned to apply the many tools I have galvanized over the years. Working at this performing arts school has been prepping me for some lofty goals I have. Everyday, I walk in looking to tackle yet another fear or desire personally and professionally in order to become better at execution in the arts. So when I was ready to loom in this mistake -disguised as rejection- I instead set my intentions on the present. I told myself not only do I not have time for this, but I called it what it was: A mistake, a mistake I could be forgiven eventually and it was in the past. So, I decided to tackle it head on, I was indeed forgiven (with parameters, LOL), I moved on and know I wouldn't be making that mistake twice. My fellow anxiety sufferers out there can relate to the major milestone that was achieved. Rejection can be very painful and if not careful rejection could cost you opportunities. Rejection has to be recognized as not the end of the process, but as part of the journey. That understanding is what sets a professional above the rest. A professional has the ability to learn from rejection and from their mistakes. They use it as stepping stones to sharpen their skills and to demonstrate their resilience. As Thomas Edison said: Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. Rejection is to be put away in order to try again.

VACATIONS

Finding new destinations to venture to for a well-seasoned traveler can be a challenge. It’s just as challenging for those who seek adventure and excitement on their vacations. While most vacationers will go to the Caribbean or perhaps Europe, there are literally thousands of destinations in-between that can give the most discerning of travelers unique cultural experiences full of adventure.

Galapagos Islands Off the western coast of Ecuador lies it’s volcanic archipelago and UNESCO World Heritage site the Galapagos Islands. Home to the most magnificent array of marine life and a variety of wildlife – the vast majority of which cannot be found elsewhere – is what makes this archipelago of 19 islands and smaller islets a hidden treasure. Whether diving, snorkeling, hiking, kayaking or exploring the area in other ways, there is always something new to discover. The diverse terrain and animal species even led Charles Darwin to write his infamous book The Origin of Species. Untapped and untamed are the major characteristics of these islands. And, for the adventurous traveler, they should not go unexplored.

Antarctica South of the Galapagos and South America is Antarctica. Considered one of the purest destinations on earth, Antarctica is widely viewed as one of the most breathtaking continents on Earth. The ultimate in exploration, Antarctica and its surrounding waters supports marine and wildlife such as whales, seals, and penguins, and a variety of other birds. This destination affords exploration via cruise, sea kayak, skiing, camping, even diving for the more experienced and adventurous traveler. Still used as a local research site, travelers to Antarctica affords its visitors the opportunity to have a vacation that is matchless.

Africa For many, exploring the world’s second largest continent seems out of reach. Or, trying to determine which of it’s 54 countries to visit is daunting. Africa is the most astounding continent in the world and is so much more than the safaris most people think of visiting the continent. Many of the tourist-ready countries are home to a variety of tribes with rich traditional history, beaches, mountains and savannahs, and markets. In addition to it’s connected countries, Africa has several islands in its surrounding areas worth visiting, such as the Seychelles, Mauritius, and Zanzibar. With much to explore on this hugely impressive continent, there is something for everyone and every type of traveler. Traveling to these destinations can be done by air or sea. Some offer river cruises and rail as others means of travel. However, you choose to explore these magnificent areas, be sure to do your research to get the most out of the destinations. Consulting a travel professional is always advised and, generally, offers you the most options to see as many locales in one trip as possible. Adventure traveler, well-seasoned, foodie, or newbie. Each of these offers something for everyone. Get out there and explore!
