Dutch Fashion Designer

Ir is van Her pen Moves Into

Ar t Writen by Nina Siegal c.2024 The New York Times Company

Dutch fashion designer I ris van Herpen, who counts Beyoncé, Björk and Tilda Swinton among her regular clients, is known for dazzling haute couture pieces that resemble sculpture. Now she?s aiming to show that the equation also works the other way around: She?s not a fashion designer but an artist who happens to make pieces for the body. Van Herpen is planning an art exhibition, called ?Hybrid,? that took a year to plan but will run for just 45 minutes on Monday, as part of Paris Haute Couture Week. Why just 45 minutes? That?s shorter than a yoga class, some Netflix episodes or a nap. Compared with her usual presentation at Fashion Week, the designer said, it?s actually a long time. ?Normally we do a runway show that takes only 15 minutes because the audience goes from one show to another. So this is very long for this setup,? she said. ?This show really is a hybrid performance,? she added. ?There are living performers doing the installation and it will be physically intense.? On a recent afternoon, van Herpen welcomed a reporter into her airy studio in the center of Westerpark, a complex of former electric company buildings inside a lush green park in western Amsterdam. I t is one of her two studios in the Dutch capital; her couture atelier, a 12-minute walk away, where she creates what she calls her ?body works,? didn?t have enough elevation to hang her largest new artworks. Here, they dangle 16 feet from the rafters.

26 | NeoBoCREATIV | Jun - Jul 2024 |www.creativmag.com

I n front of the arched windows framing the constantly shifting clouds, is a curtain of tulle, decorated with swirling shapes made of dried splatters of oil paint and dyed silks. This is one of her latest pieces, ?The Weightlessness of the Unknown,? among the sculptures that will be shown in Paris. Upstairs, three more swaths of tulle stretched along steel poles providing a ?canvas? for designs made of silk organza plissés and 3D-printed objects. The decorative patterning could be prehistoric fossils, skeletons or fallen birds decomposing on a beach ? or rather an imaginary combination of all three.

I c a n ?t e ve r s e e i n to th e fu tu re , but I know th i s i s p e rm a n e n t

?My work has always been interdisciplinary,? van Herpen said, ?and I really feel such a strong connection between art, architecture, science and couture. That?s what I ?m doing with the exhibition,? she added, trying ?to let go of the boundaries that we set for ourselves, as the creators and for the audience.?

Tulle, silk and 3D printing have long been some of van Herpen?s favored materials, which she has used to create gowns and outré headdresses that have both regal and aviary grace. Her fashion pieces are simultaneously futuristic and primordial, referencing her fascination with science and

anthropology, as well as with contemporary art. But after assembling 15 years?worth of ?looks? for a major retrospective, ?Sculpting the Senses,? at the Museé des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (it closed in April) ? and designing bespoke gowns for Queen Máxima of the Netherlands and France?s first lady, Brigitte Macron ? van Herpen realized she had another ambition. Creating works that aren?t linked to the human form is ?exploring a new realm within my own creative process,? she said. ?The body is such a focus point that it was for me really about finding freedom. I wanted to see what I am making beyond the body, because there?s more to me, I think, than only couture.?

I t was also, partly, to slow down. Until 2023, van Herpen had produced biannual runway shows of her collections for 17 years. I n January, she decided to skip the 2024 spring collection showcase in Paris to focus on her new artworks. Van Herpen calls the resulting show a ?hybrid art installation,? which will include nine works in total: four large works in her Westerpark studio and five others that will incorporate people, whom she refers to as ?performers.?

I n January, she decided to skip the 2024 spring collection showcase in Paris to focus on her new artworks. Van Herpen calls the resulting show a ?hybrid art installation,? which will include nine works in total: four large works in her Westerpark studio and five others that will incorporate people, whom she refers to as ?performers.? For one of the new works, ?Ancient Ancestors,? she took inspiration from research conducted by Emmanuel Farge, a French biochemist at the French I nstitut Curie, a cancer research and treatment center. Farge discovered that primordial marine organisms?cell structure was determined, in part, by the movement of waves. The 3D sculptural elements embedded in the tulle resemble horseshoe crabs and seabird skeletons. ?The structures refer to past but also to the future, because these organism are constantly changing,? van Herpen said. She described the two largest hanging sculptures, ?Weightlessness of the Unknown? and ?Embers of the Mind,? as self-portraits, although they are wholly abstract ? more reflective of her emotional state. I n recent years, her inner life has focused on transformation, she explained. She moved from Amsterdam with her boyfriend and collaborator, Salvador Breed, to Het Twiske, a wetlands nature reserve about a half-hour?s drive north of the city, known for its many bird species. On long daily walks with her dog, she explained, she often reflects on nature?s ability to decompose and regenerate. ?My focus now is more on a transition, rather than a fixed state of being,? she said. Does van Herpen expect to continue moving further into the realm of art and, perhaps, away from the constraints of creating clothes for the human body? ?I can?t ever see into the future, but I know this is permanent,? she said, referring to her shift toward fine art. ?I am a person who needs those different influences; if I focus on one thing only ? it just isn?t giving me the right dynamic.? She added, ?I ?m not leaving couture, but I ?m also not leaving this other? ? she paused, seeking the precise word ? ?dimension. I really intend to take the freedom to work on the pieces that I feel need to come out, at that moment.?

rom Elevator Encounters to International Runways I n the world of fashion, talent can emerge from the most unexpected places. For Lilly Ulrich, a 14-year-old model from Duisburg, Germany, her journey to the international runways began in a stuck elevator at the Monte Carlo Grand Prix. Now, standing tall at 6?4?, Lilly?s meteoric rise in the fashion industry is a testament to her talent, resilience, and the serendipitous encounters that have defined her career. I t was a chance meeting that set Lilly?s modeling career in motion. Her father, Marco Ulrich, found himself in an elevator with fashion designer Andres Aquino and high fashion model Kelsie McKenna. Marco shared photos of his daughter, who at the age of 9 was already 5?4? and aspiring to be a model despite being bullied for her height. I mpressed by her potential, Aquino invited Lilly to model at Couture Fashion Week New York. This invitation marked the beginning of Lilly?s journey into the world of high fashion. Lilly?s debut was nothing short of spectacular. Andres Aquino, renowned for his luxury fashion designs, created a special dress for her, allowing Lilly to open his show. Her performance was a hit, and it paved the way for her participation in subsequent fashion shows, including the prestigious Global Short Film Awards Gala held annually in Cannes, France.

Cannes: A Stage for Excellence Walking the runway in Cannes, Lilly joined other top models and international beauty queens at the Global Short Film Awards Gala. This event, which celebrates excellence in short filmmaking, attracts industry leaders, VI Ps, celebrities, and international media. Lilly?s participation in such a high-profile event at a young age is a testament to her extraordinary talent and poise. Lilly?s efforts and talent have not gone unnoticed. At the 9th annual Global Short Film Awards Gala, she was honored with the 2024 Top Model award, presented by Andres Aquino, Emmy-winning actor Vincent DePaul, and award-winning actress Justina Biosah. This recognition solidifies her status as a rising star in the fashion industry. Despite her burgeoning modeling career, Lilly has maintained a strong focus on her education. Her parents ensure that her modeling pursuits do not compromise her academic excellence. This balance is crucial, allowing Lilly to chase her dreams while securing her future. Lilly?s remarkable journey has been widely covered by major media outlets, including RTL (German TV), Bild, and Welt. Her story of overcoming bullying and rising to prominence in the fashion world resonates with many, inspiring young talents across the globe. As Lilly continues to grow both personally and professionally, the fashion world eagerly anticipates her next steps. With the support of her family and the mentorship of influential figures like Andres Aquino, Lilly is poised to reach even greater heights in her career. Lilly Ulrich?s rise in the fashion industry exemplifies how talent, resilience, and a bit of luck can lead to extraordinary opportunities. Angelique, the Brand Ambassador for Kola Choucoune, on Her Journey, Miss Choucoune, and Preserving Haitian Heritage I n a recent interview with Angelique, the brand ambassador for Kola Choucoune, we delved into her role as the face of the brand, the significance of Miss Choucoune, and her commitment to preserving Haitian culture. Angelique's passion for her heritage and her determination to bridge the gap between generations is truly inspiring. Join us as we explore her journey and the exciting projects she has in store.

Miss Choucoune: A Love Story Turned Pageant: Angelique shared the captivating story of Miss Choucoune, a Haitian woman who became the inspiration for a pageant. Miss Choucoune was a woman admired by a lover who wrote songs, poems, and stories about her. Her journey began when she relocated to Cap-Haïtien after a breakup and started her own restaurant, becoming an entrepreneur. I t was through her resilience and beauty that she gained recognition and the nickname "Choucoune." The Kola Choucoune brand sponsored the pageant, and Angelique proudly represents the brand as its ambassador. As a first-generation Haitian-American, Angelique shared her personal struggle with language and her commitment to preserving Haitian culture. Raised in America, her parents prioritized English as her first language, but her grandmother insisted on speaking Creole. Although Angelique initially struggled to respond in Creole, she has been actively working on improving her language skills. She visited Haiti last year, immersing herself in

conversations with locals and embracing her roots. Angelique recognizes that many Haitian-Americans face similar language barriers and aims to address this issue through future projects and initiatives. Angelique's dedication to preserving Haitian culture extends beyond language. As an advocate for United Diaspora, she aims to address the challenges faced by Haitian-Americans in maintaining their cultural identity. She emphasized the importance of passing down traditions and language to younger generations. Angelique expressed her desire to collaborate with an app developer focusing on native languages, particularly Haitian Creole, to ensure that the language remains vibrant and accessible.

I WENT FROM IDOLIZING DATING TO "DATING" GOD

80 Jun- -Jul Jul2024 2024 | ww.creativmag.com 82 | NeoBoCREATIV || Jun |www.creativmag.com

W

HEEEEEW... I hope I am not the only one who went on dates and was overly concerned about being in a relationship. How did it turn out for you? For me, not so good. However, in this season, I came to the realization that the very thing I wanted from men, God desired to give me freely. Your girl was out here in these streets, whew chile. You see, I am like any woman who desires to be courted by a man. I desired to be in a relationship that led to marriage, to have a man take care of me, take me out, show me off, love, and protect me. I f I am honest, I was kind of desperate to be in a relationship. Looking back, as long as it wasn't too toxic, I was good with it! Does that resonate with anyone? What I 've realized is that I made my "dating, relationships" an idol. People have the misconception that an idol is like a statue or idolizing money. I n reality, an idol is anything or anyone that takes the place of God. Exodus 20:3-5 says, "You must not worship any other gods except me. You must not make any idols. Don't make any statues or pictures of anything up in the sky or of anything on the earth or of anything down in the water. Don't worship or serve idols of any kind because I , the Lord, am your God. I hate my people worshipping other gods. People who sin against me become my enemies, and I will punish them. And I will punish their children, their grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren." When I tell you that thing GOT ME ALL THE WAY TOGETHER, I was clutching my pearls. You see, I thought about dating and being in a relationship ALL THE TI ME. I was dressing in hopes of being seen. I f we were going out, I was either asking what type of men would be there, were men going to be there, and how to strategically place myself to be seen. I was operating in the flesh so badly that in my mind, I tried to justify it by saying, "Well, Ruth positioned herself for her Boaz. I 'm just helping God a little." Man, was that foolish. God doesn't need help, and I was mixing my fleshly desires (to have a man, to have sex even if it was premarital) with the story of Ruth. What I didn't realize then was that I was shorting myself of what God truly desired for me, so HE BLOCKED I T. I literally felt that God had a protective shield over me so that the men I would fall for (or any men) would not see me.

deep, I dismissed the fact that everything I was looking for in a man, God wanted to provide to me. He just wanted me to go to Him!! Our God gives us free will, and that free will comes with consequences. To any woman or man who has experienced this or is experiencing this, what I 'm realizing is God loves us beyond our flaws. God wants to provide, protect, take care of us, spend time with us, and desires to cultivate that intimacy with Him. He wanted me, and wants us, to SEEK after Him. Matthew 6:33 says, "But seek Ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." I had to repent, denounce, and renounce the sin of idolizing relationships. I then began to be so intentional with having DATES with GOD. I literally began setting time just to really date God. I would go out for walks and just pour my heart to Him. I would read His word, journal freely what I felt, and praise Him for everything. Or I would do a date time at the beach with my Bible and devotional and worship Him. Those were my ways of loving on God. I sn't it funny how I would beg a man to take me on a date, listen to me, put me first, cover me, take care of me, and provide for me? And look, God wanted to do it all along. I pray this helps. Go to our Father; He's waiting with open arms. Date God with intention, seek Him first, and watch. Don't get it twisted; the waiting/ pruning season is hard, but I 'd rather do it with God. I 'd rather have God in EVERYTHI NG.

So, are you ready to set your date with God?

WRI TTEN BY Ms. Mya Auguste

Dating and being in a relationship became an idol for me. I thought about it more than I thought about God or His Kingdom. I t was so
