Patrick John Stuver

D

rawing from a lifelong practice of working with found objects, California-based multi-media artist Patrick John Stuver describes his work as producing paintings and sculptures that are natural, free-flowing combinations of materials and ideas. Stuver?s ?talismans? and textural paintings use paint and other materials such as studio debris to create thick topographical layers that explore color, form and the natural world. ?Found object art, when successfully arranged, is fascinating. To take detritus or things left behind, reimagine them and combine them in ways that are outside their original intent or purpose and in doing so end up with something new? I find this to be incredibly rewarding,? he explains. Speaking about his practice, Stuver says his creative process always begins with materials ? both collected and made ? that are then met by ideas inspired by long and careful study of the natural world, as well as memories that re-emerge when the materials are under manipulation. ?Nature is full of macro and micro versions of the same patterns, and my observations often lead to the topographical features found in my work,? continues Stuver. ?I wander constantly, observing the organized chaos of the natural world, from tree bark to clouds to landscapes at different vantage points. These shifting patterns all feed into what I call my ?imagimemory?, where the memory of place and nature pulls at my consciousness.? According to Stuver, over the last two decades, his interest has transitioned from finding curious bits of discarded objects into a practice of gathering incurious materials

16 | NeoBoCREATIV | Oct - Nov 2024 |www.creativmag.com

such as packing paper, cardboard boxes, sawdust, paste, clay, dregs of glue, and pieces of woodworking. Based on a strong desire to rearrange the world by finding meaning in random patterns, his artworks often contain hidden messages and embedded sub-images. Elaborating on the phenomenon of face pareidolia, Stuver remarks resisting imagery that enables viewers to have an ?all-at-once? experience creates subtle Easter eggs that encourage a deeper relationship with the work. ?I don?t set out to create faces but [I ] cannot avoid seeing them either,? he says.

Stuver shares, ?I think my work is about pulling out patterns, shifts in shadows, and textural directions. I want a viewer of my art to find something new every time they look at one of my creations. Art should grow into the spaces it is placed in. Depending on color, light and position it may well be better one way or another, and I want viewers and collectors of my work to feel that kind of flexibility and sense of discovery.?

Sense of permanence and zero waste Having moved around the country regularly as a child, Stuver often found himself on the fringes and feeling a sense of impermanence or a lack of roots. The constant cycle of reconstruction he experienced during childhood has instilled a desire to create work that will last for generations. This commitment has impacted both Stuver?s creative process and outlook on the art viewer or receiver?s experience.

Diablo I, 2023, 24 x 24 in

?I suppose my practice now is about creating a sense of permanence with art made from styles and materials that can endure. I often test materials to make sure that years after creation they won?t collapse,? he says. ?I f I detect some form of instability, degradation or softening when a piece is curing, I disassemble and rebuild it. This is also the key reason I create all my canvases myself. I want my art to endure for hundreds of years, to outlive my collectors?great, great, great grandchildren.? ?

Work in progress! ?I want a viewer to be able to move in and out, up and down, to and from, with any given work and to see my fingerprints where they are to be found. I t goes back to that sense of discovery I mentioned before: a viewer should be able to experience a work and its processes, materials, textures, everything from a place that evokes a visceral connection,? he adds. To evoke all of the debris that has gone into a piece of work, from the beginning into the final presentation, is also on Stuver?s list of goals in the art space. Stuver says, if he?s done this, he?s accomplished something special. The artist tries to minimize refuse 18 | NeoBoCREATIV | Oct - Nov 2024 |www.creativmag.com

by recycling as much as he can and incorporating waste into the final artwork. When afforded the ability to pursue art full-time, Stuver chose to stick to an ?untrained? practice and learn-by-doing. He embraces being a member of the ?outsider art? club. With a background in marketing and technology, as a contributor to the development of the software company Everbridge, Stuver saw the evolution of technology in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Fast forward to the present day, Stuver is now combining mediums and giving new life to the left behind.

scaping Realit y through Color and Light

An Artistic Journey with Marcia Brito Marcia Brito?s world is one where the lines of reality blur, bending into vibrant scenes shaped by light, movement, and her unfiltered lens. Standing in her exhibit at Paradise Gallery in the Florida Keys, Brito discusses her unique process with *Creativ Magazine*. Her latest collection, photographic abstractions, invites viewers into a different realm. Each piece is a ?painted? capture, created with Brito?s camera alone? no digital manipulation. ?I use my camera as a brush in space, capturing color, light, and movement,? she explains. These photographs are direct imprints from the lens, unaltered by post-processing software, giving her work a unique authenticity. Brito?s portfolio boasts both canvas and metal works, including a large 40-by-60-inch series on canvas and smaller, vivid pieces on metal. ?This was my first set,? Brito mentions, pointing to some striking black and red abstracts, which she later expanded to more colorful series with varied lighting. Her aim? To offer an escape from the sometimes harsh reality of contemporary issues. ?By abstracting reality fully, I create a new space, something joyful and disconnected from the stresses of daily life,? she shares. Art as an Emotional Escape Brito?s work transcends mere visual appeal; it?s an emotional experience for both artist and viewer. Her numbered series, each labeled simply as ?Photographic Abstraction,? begins with photographs of actual subjects but transforms them into something unrecognizable. ?One piece came from an exhibit I saw at the Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville, featuring a submarine with brilliant, flashing lights,? she explains. By timing her camera?s shutter perfectly, she captures these colors and lights to create an almost surreal visual harmony. The goal, Brito says, is to provide a mental break, allowing viewers to get ?lost? in color, movement, and form.

It takes a true na tur e lover to hang around long enough to capture just the right moment

One standout piece features colors manipulated from the light under a moving boat, creating the illusion of underwater dreamscapes. I nspired by abstract artists of the past, Brito shares how she, too, finds herself lost in her work, discovering new details with every glance. ?I t?s like a different world of color,? she notes. Each look reveals subtle transitions between hues, lines, and shapes, making every encounter with her art a new experience.

22 | NeoBoCREATIV | Oct - Nov 2024 |www.creativmag.com

Nature as an I nspiration

Alongside her photographic abstractions, Brito?s recent series captures nature?s delicate beauty. This body of work comprises square-format, Polaroid-transferred images of flowers and plants, mostly orchids. Her method is fascinating: she takes a photograph, soaks it in a chemical bath, and then transfers the emulsion onto watercolor paper. Though she does use minimal digital touch-ups, Brito emphasizes that her process remains largely true to her organic, in-camera approach. Creating art outdoors, especially with living subjects, demands patience. ?I t takes a true nature lover to hang around long enough to capture just the right moment,? Brito says, sharing how weather conditions can affect her work. She?s also an avid gardener, a passion that she says fuels her photographic explorations. ?I t?s my safe place, and through it, I can capture the intricate beauty of nature.?

An Artistic Dedication to Conservation

Reflections and Advice for Aspiring Artists Reflecting on her artistic path, Brito shares valuable insights for emerging artists. With years of experience and numerous awards to her name, she encourages artists to remain true to themselves. ?Find your voice. The art world is vast, and it?s easy to get lost, especially with so many digital opportunities,? she advises. Rather than chasing every opportunity, Brito believes in focusing on one?s unique artistic purpose.

Brito?s artistic journey in the Florida Keys has also spurred a commitment to environmental awareness. Her conservation project, funded by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, aims to document the region?s unique ecosystems for future generations. Her environmental series showcases local wildlife and landscapes on canvas, featuring everything from graceful pelicans to underwater shots of tarpons. ?This project is my love letter to the Keys,? Brito says. I t?s both a tribute to the area?s beauty and a call to protect its fragile ecosystems. Through her lens, Brito doesn?t shy away from the environmental challenges the Florida Keys face, capturing striking scenes of marine debris and other ecological concerns. She hopes her work will inspire action and awareness, allowing viewers to see the pressing issues as vividly as the wildlife. ?I t?s been amazing to see how much the community here cares. People would take me out on their boats to help me document these issues, showing me their favorite local spots and places that needed attention,? she reflects. Her environmental exhibit, which began as a traveling showcase at local libraries, now serves as a community archive, preserving the essence and concerns of the Keys.

Her closing words are a reminder of her unwavering dedication to her craft: ?Follow your heart and go inwards before you go outwards. Discover what drives you, what you alone can share with the world. Once you find that, the journey becomes clearer.? As Brito?s art continues to evolve, her works offer not only a feast for the eyes but also an invitation to reflect on the world, both outside and within. Her art gallery in the Florida Keys and her online platform, BritoArt.com, provide ongoing access to her creative universe, capturing the essence of I maginarium: A New Journey I nto the Mind a true artist who navigates both light and As her current exhibit nears its end, Brito is shadow, reality and imagination, with grace and already looking forward to her next project, passion. ?I maginarium,? set to debut at the I slamorada Library. Unlike her previous work, which focuses on external subjects, this exhibit takes an introspective turn, drawing from Brito?s inner world. ?This new collection comes entirely from within? from my thoughts, dreams, and imagination,? she explains. For the first time, Brito is also taking on the role of curator, giving her complete control over the artistic language and selection of pieces. I maginarium is set to be a visually rich journey into her creative subconscious. Through this collection, Brito explores the boundless world of creativity. She envisions it as ?a magical realm, a dream world we all have within us.? Departing from her tradition of representing the external world, ?I maginarium? embraces surrealism, immersing viewers in abstracted dreamscapes that merge imagination and memory.

The Accidental Photographer Leslie Alvarez 28 | NeoBoCREATIV | Oct - Nov 2024 |www.creativmag.com

hen Leslie Alvarez picked up a camera for the first time, she could hardly foresee the vibrant and fast-paced career that awaited her. Starting her journey in Cuba, Alvarez was not a photographer but an aspiring artist with her heart set on the performing arts. From dancing ballet to singing and theater, young Leslie adored the spotlight. Little did she know that her journey would lead her behind the scenes, capturing others?moments in the spotlight. Growing up in Cuba, Alvarez dedicated her time to honing her artistic skills. But life took a sudden turn when she moved to the United States in 2010. Adjusting to a new culture came with its own set of challenges, especially as a teenager. Like many immigrants, Alvarez faced bullying from classmates due to her accent and background, forcing her to transform from an extroverted performer into someone more reserved. ?I was always the one wanting to be on stage, the one who loved the attention,? Alvarez recalls. ?But here, I began using my creativity differently, finding expression through writing and photography instead of being the center of attention.? This shift in expression helped her cope with her struggles and eventually turned into a newfound passion. While grappling with the sorrow of losing her grandmother and the disillusionment of a mundane job, Alvarez stumbled upon a camera while cleaning out her closet. I t was a discovery that would pivot her life path entirely. After leaving her job at Wal-Mart, Alvarez felt unfulfilled, yearning for something more. The camera she found became the start of a new chapter. I nitially taking photos of friends and family, Alvarez discovered a natural talent for capturing special moments. What began as simple snapshots at family gatherings and parties quickly transformed into a serious pursuit, with others praising her work and

sharing it widely. She remembers her first successful shoot vividly: ?One of my friends was graduating from FI U and wanted pictures. I had no idea what I was doing, but the pictures turned out great. I t felt like destiny.? Her innate understanding of lighting, composition, and timing pushed her to explore photography professionally. Rather than starting with still images and studio settings, Alvarez took the road less traveled, diving into the dynamic world of concerts and events. Her work caught attention, gaining traction on social media and building her audience. Now a recognized photographer in South Florida, the 26-year-old has carved a niche in the music and festival scene. Alvarez's portfolio spans major music festivals, including Reggaeton festival Vibra Urbana, Rolling Loud, and Jazz in the Gardens. Her photos capture the energy of iconic moments, showcasing her ability to bring life to fast-paced environments and create a vivid visual narrative. Her lens has immortalized artists like Shenseea, Yung Wylin?, 2 Chainz, Farruko, and French Montana. Alvarez?s dedication and presence at these events built her reputation, allowing her to work her way up from small venues to larger stages. ?I started with local events just to network and share my work,? she explains. ?That?s how I built my audience and eventually, my team.?

Healthy and Happy Per iods

WRI TTEN BY

Ramona Spence Riley

October is one of the months dedicated to women?s hormonal health, raising awareness for breast cancer, and promoting period health. Many women dread that time of the month due to cramps, bloating, and back pain. Unfortunately, painful periods have become normalized. Why do women suffer through seven days of bleeding in silence? When a woman has reproductive issues, such as fibroids or endometriosis, her period often signals that something isn?t right? excessive bleeding and pain are typically the first signs. Our periods reflect the health of our bodies, particularly our reproductive and digestive systems. As we know, menstrual periods happen because there is no sperm to fertilize the egg, leading the uterus to shed its lining. However, there's no reason for this process to extend beyond three days, including light spotting before or after.

Ramona Spence Riley, CEO of Cosmic Womb-Man and mother of three, is a Womb Wellness Specialist who focuses on healing the reproductive system. She is also a nutritionist who creates and personalizes treatment and food plans to facilitate quick healing and help individuals make the right choices about what they eat. She is also an herbalist who uses herbs to treat hormonal imbalances and a number of mineral and vitamin deficiencies. Her journey into holistic healing began when she was faced with a medical condition that could change her life. She was diagnosed with adenomyosis (a condition that causes the lining of the womb to bury into the muscular wall of the womb). Doctors insisted she do a hysterectomy, as they said it was the only solution to fix the medical condition. Not wanting to have a hysterectomy, Ramona began looking into holistic approaches for self-healing. After three months of herbal treatments, sticking with a specific diet, and hypnotherapy, Ramona's adenomyosis was cured. Ramona fell pregnant with her third child, who she remarkably delivered in the car on her own, whilst being taken to the birth center. This unforgettable birthing experience has made services she provides such as; pre and post-natal assistance; very dear to her heart.

Women can take several steps to improve their reproductive health and achieve a healthier, happier period:

Many mainstream pads contain chemicals that are toxic to the body, potentially contributing to excessive bleeding. Products with bleach, plastic, or fragrances can negatively impact period health. Simply choosing pads labeled ?100% cotton? may not be enough to avoid these harmful ingredients. Additionally, regular exercise? whether cardio, weights, yoga, or sports? three times a week can help the body function smoothly, contributing to a healthier period.

Diet : Some common foods can negatively impact women?s health. Dairy and soy, which contain high estrogen levels, can lead to an overproduction of uterine lining. Red meats like beef, pork, and organ meats can also contribute to an unhealthy period. Women may find that abstaining from meat a week before and during their period reduces symptoms? and the effects are even better if meat is removed entirely. Listening to our bodies is one of the best ways to support our health. Changes in bowel movements, such as constipation or loose stools, may occur before a period due to the digestive system working harder. During this time, it?s helpful to avoid heavy foods and instead eat lighter meals that don?t strain the digestive system.

remedy, and within three months, I transformed my health, reducing my bleeding from 13 days to a maximum of 28 hours. This experience inspired me to help other women achieve symptom-free, 24-hour periods.

Treatm ent s:

Helping women around the world find relief through tonics, teas, and treatments has become my passion. Hearing their stories of healing reminds me that even our struggles can lead to growth. I wouldn?t understand what a healthy, happy period feels like if I hadn?t known the pain of an unhealthy one.

Physical treatments can have a powerful impact on period health. Proper vaginal steaming, for instance, can shorten the period and ensure all old blood is released, allowing for a fresh, healthy cycle. Healthy periods should not begin with burgundy, brown, or black blood. Castor oil treatments with heat on the abdomen can help detoxify the reproductive, digestive, lymphatic, and circulatory systems. Acupuncture is also an effective way to support overall health, including reproductive health.

Every woman deserves to experience effortless, pain-free periods. I magine a world where all women could enjoy healthy cycles? how much happier we would all be.

I endured painful periods for 18 years, often missing school and struggling to function in the week leading up to and during my period. My OBGYN prescribed birth control, which relieved the pain but led to ovarian cysts, one of which ruptured, causing additional pain and infection. I continued to suffer until I was diagnosed with adenomyosis, a condition that severely impacts the uterus. Faced with the prospect of a hysterectomy at 29, I explored every option to heal myself. I removed all meats except fish from my diet and practiced sound and color therapy twice a day. Red Raspberry Leaf became my go-to www.creativmag.com |Oct - Nov 2024 | NeoBoCREATIV | 39

KYU BY KESI Infusing Heritage and Ethics into Fashion Empowering Conscious Consumers and Entrepreneurs through Ethical Luxury 44 | NeoBoCREATIV | Oct - Nov 2024 |www.creativmag.com

K KYU BY KESI , founded by Kesi Gibson, embodies a brand ethos deeply rooted in values of individuality, sustainability, and ethics. Central to its philosophy is the mantra "Putting Humanity Back into Fashion," a principle that guides every facet of the brand. Kesi?s Jamaican heritage serves as a foundation, inspiring not only the aesthetics of the brand but also its mission to create fashion that empowers, respects the planet, and champions ethical practices in an industry often dominated by fast fashion.

Th e I n f l u en ce of Jam ai can H er i t age on K YU BY K ESI : Kesi?s Jamaican heritage is integral to the soul of KYU BY KESI . The island's vibrant culture, bold colors, and rich tradition of craftsmanship can be seen in the brand?s designs, but it goes beyond aesthetics. Jamaican culture is rooted in a deep sense of community and resilience, values that KYU BY KESI integrates into its fashion philosophy. The brand?s commitment to "Putting Humanity Back into Fashion" reflects Jamaica?s strong connection to nature and the value placed on self-expression and individuality. KYU BY KESI merges creativity with purpose. Each collection offers more than fashion? it tells a story of empowerment, aiming to inspire individuals to express themselves authentically while making a positive impact on the world. The brand doesn?t follow trends but prioritizes creating timeless, ethically-made pieces that celebrate diversity and culture. I n this way, Kesi?s Jamaican roots serve as both a creative and ethical guide for the brand.

Et h i cal L u xu r y i n Pr act i ce:

KYU BY KESI takes pride in promoting ethical luxury, ensuring that every step of its production chain aligns with its core values of sustainability and fairness. Ethical luxury, as defined by the brand, involves designing beautiful, high-quality fashion while considering the well-being of people and the planet. Kesi and her team work closely with artisans and suppliers who share their commitment to fair wages, safe working conditions, and sustainable practices. By focusing on the humane side of fashion, KYU BY KESI strives to create pieces that are not only luxurious but also socially and environmentally responsible.

KYU BY KESI seeks to shift this mindset, encouraging consumers to embrace a "buy better" philosophy instead of "buy more." To further this message, the brand has partnered with Club Debut to produce a docuseries, aimed at educating a broader audience about

The brand places great emphasis on selecting raw materials with care, ensuring minimal waste and environmental impact throughout the production process. This focus on sustainability, however, comes with its challenges. Ethical suppliers and sustainable materials often come at a higher cost, making it difficult to compete with fast fashion prices. Nevertheless, KYU BY KESI remains steadfast in its mission, educating consumers on the value of investing in ethically-made fashion rather than mass-produced, disposable clothing.

Challenges in Building a Sustainable Fashion Brand: The journey of building KYU BY KESI has been both rewarding and challenging. One of the major hurdles is competing against the fast fashion industry, where low costs and quick turnarounds dominate. Sourcing sustainable materials and partnering with ethical suppliers often comes with a higher price tag, which can be challenging for a young brand. However, Kesi and her team remain committed to their values, refusing to compromise on quality or ethics.

Beyond designing clothing, KYU BY KESI is dedicated to empowering other entrepreneurs and creators. Through collaborations with artisans and makers, especially within its sub-brand, Kyu Melange, the brand provides resources, training, and visibility for small business owners. This collaborative approach not only enriches KYU BY KESI ?s collections but also helps local artisans grow their businesses, creating a ripple effect of positive impact. I n addition to these collaborations, KYU BY KESI offers workshops and mentorship programs for aspiring fashion entrepreneurs. These initiatives focus on sustainable business practices, creative development, and ethical fashion, ensuring that the next generation of designers is equipped to navigate the industry with purpose and integrity.

Educating consumers about the importance of ethical fashion has also been a challenge. Fast fashion has conditioned many people to expect cheap clothing with rapid production cycles. www.creativmag.com |Oct - Nov 2024 | NeoBoCREATIV | 45

I n this expose, we?ll delve into I celand?s most breathtaking sights, from volcanic powerhouses to frozen glaciers, while exploring the country?s unique climate and vibrant cultural scene.

I

I celand's history is deeply rooted in its Viking heritage and unique geographic position in the North Atlantic. The island was first settled in the late 9th century by Norse explorers, led by I ngólfr Arnarson, who arrived from Norway around 874 AD. Early settlers established farms

and developed a society based on the Alþingi, one of the world?s oldest parliaments, founded in 930 AD at Þingvellir. This era is famously recorded in the I celandic sagas, narratives that blend history and mythology to recount the lives of settlers and their struggles. I n the 13th century, I celand fell under Norwegian rule, followed by a Danish monarchy in 1380. Despite periods of hardship, including plagues and volcanic eruptions, I celand maintained a distinct cultural identity. I n 1944, amid World War I I , I celand declared independence from Denmark and became a republic. Since then, it has grown into a progressive, prosperous nation celebrated for its environmental consciousness, renewable energy innovations, and vibrant cultural heritage.

Stuðlagil Canyon Stuðlagil Canyon is a breathtaking natural wonder in East I celand, famous for its impressive basalt column formations and vivid blue-green glacial river that runs through it. Formed thousands of years ago, this canyon emerged as glaciers retreated, allowing the Jökla River to carve out a path and reveal the striking hexagonal basalt columns that now line the canyon walls. The river was once more turbulent, but a hydroelectric project in the area reduced its flow, making it safer to access and revealing the canyon's unique formations and clear water. WoodenViking A Viking was a seafaring Scandinavian warrior, trader, and explorer from the late eighth to early eleventh centuries. Known for their advanced maritime skills, Vikings embarked on voyages across Europe, Asia, and North America, engaging in raids, trade, and exploration. They hailed from the regions now known as Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, bringing Norse culture, art, and mythology wherever they traveled. Vikings were also settlers and farmers, establishing communities in the lands they reached, including parts of England, I reland, Greenland, and even briefly in North America. Although they were often depicted as ruthless warriors, the Vikings were also skilled artisans, farmers, and traders, and their influence can be seen in various aspects of modern European culture.

I celand's glaciers are breathtaking natural wonders, covering about 11% of the country?s landscape. These massive ice formations, like Vatnajökull? the largest glacier in Europe? shape I celand's unique topography and are a key element of its natural beauty. Glaciers like Langjökull and Svínafellsjökull not only serve as stunning backdrops for travelers but also play a critical role in I celand?s ecosystem, feeding rivers and creating diverse landscapes through their slow movement over centuries. However, these glaciers are increasingly threatened by climate change, with some retreating rapidly, bringing urgency to preservation efforts in this land of fire and ice.

crater l akes I celand is home to several stunning crater lakes, formed by volcanic activity that shaped much of the island's unique landscape. These lakes, such as Kerið and Víti, are nestled within volcanic craters, showcasing vibrant colors and offering visitors a look into I celand?s dynamic geological past. Kerið, in the Grímsnes area, is known for its brilliant turquoise water set against striking red volcanic rock, creating a vivid natural contrast. Víti, located within the Krafla caldera in northern I celand, means "hell" in I celandic? a nod to the steaming geothermal areas surrounding it. Crater lakes in I celand not only attract nature lovers and photographers but also highlight the ever-present geothermal energy and volcanic forces beneath the surface.
