The Editor's Letter ART APPRECIATION issue

S

Starting 2020 on a different note. If you haven’t heard yet, I just turned 40…40 years old!!! This was not a walk in the park I can surely tell you that. Every decade comes with its lessons and experiences. The 30s have thought me not to sweat the small stuff that life happens and we just have to roll with the punches. Perfect example, as I am writing this, the world just recently lost a mogul, Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna expired on an helicopter crash. No one saw it coming but that’s a lesson that I’m sure everyone learned at that particular moment: Death spares no one. I didn’t mean to start on a sour note but it’s just to let you know that when reality strikes, your priorities align themselves they way they are suppose to. On that note I am please to tell you that for the first time we have decided to feature the art of a very talented photographer on the cover this month just silently admiring his art. No story needed just admiring his work through the lens seeing his work the want he intended us to see it. Also we are very pleased to introduce some new faces discovered in the last months. Artists these days are truly stepping up their game giving us a new perspective on photographic art. We truly could not have done this without our contributors, entering our 5th year with a bang! With this said enjoy the 36th issue and Happy New Year!

Eugene is an abstract artist “specialiLangzing” in painting and mixed media. After growing up in Brooklyn and Long Island, New York, he embarked on a college education at Long Island University, where he obtained his B. S. in Medical Technology and his M. S. in Medical Biology. He held various medical positions on Long Island and then relocated to California where he began to paint and develop his artistic talents. Utilizing enamel based paints, he showcased his paintings at local shows. The bulk of his work began in California and then he moved to Las Vegas, where he and his family resides. Now retired, and after many dormant years, he has gone back to his passion for painting and now uses enamels as well as acrylics in his bold, colorful, geometric designs. He currently is a featured Vango artist, on Instagram and has several paintings on display at The Hunt Vintage in Highland Park, CA. When he is not painting, he is listening to his vast vinyl LP collection or putting together his website for future use. He may be out of New York but he still follows his favorite teams and is a die-hard Knick and Yankee fan. © 2017 by Eugene Lang

Blending Art & Fashion, Alexandra Grounds Deconstructs the Female Experience 62 | CREATIV | Jan - Feb 2020 | www.creativmag.com

Inspired by the people and the world around her, Grounds starts with an idea or a vision that stems from a message she wants to represent in her work. Completing a number of rough and loose sketches, she depicts many different versions of the idea in order to test composition and color. The next step of her creative process: taking a photograph of her subject matter (who is often a friend that she thinks captures her vision). Following a heavy dose of alteration with the help of Photoshop, the painter selects a composition and experiments with her painting process – her favorite part. On the go: the mixing of new colors and the exploring of new brush techniques. As Grounds has developed not only as an artist, but also as a person, she’s learned to love the uncertainty that comes with her starting point. Saying sometimes it’s her hands that make the decisions, the artist is displaying a more adventurous spirit.

A

A brief back and forth with Alexandra Grounds and it’s apparent that when it comes to arts & culture, the 20-year-old contemporary artist is on point and in tune beyond her years. She is not only aware of the shared challenges that young women face in the existing social and media climate, but also advocates for change via creativity and conversation. Exploring the portrayal of the female figure, Grounds uses her voice to deconstruct the female experience, share a powerful message and help unify and empower women across the globe.

Picking up a paintbrush for the first time, Grounds began creating when she was entering womanhood and experiencing her own pressures as a woman in society. As an adolescent, she was part of an academically rigorous community, where she explains the pull to be exceptional on an intellectual level was met with the pull to sexualize one’s self. Grounds encountered friends and classmates with depression, eating disorders and issues with self-harm. Along with her female peers, she often finished the day feeling lost or defeated. Encouraged to consider the expectations that shape self-worth, she connected to the following themes: body image, peer pressure, social validation, the misrepresentation of women in the media & the influence of pop culture.

www.creativmag.com | Jan - Feb 2020 | CREATIV | 63

The Power of Visualization “My paintings became an outlet for me to express these experiences and I found a voice within my community. As I grew into my own, I have embraced my femininity and sexuality as a means of identity for myself. I feel empowered by my womanhood and the intimacies that accompany [it] and I want to express this through my work.” She shares. With the power of portraiture painting (and the subtleties of human expression) on her side, the artist notes every individual she meets has a story to tell and one of the best ways to do so is through the form of expression – the glint of an eye, the upturn of a lip or the placement of a hand. Consistently trying to capture and combine both the strength and vulnerability of her subject, Grounds builds a character and a story for each portrait.

Describing people as the ones who tell their stories, pass on their histories & bring about change in the world, Grounds comments, “So many times we go through life without pausing to interact with and getting to know the people around us. To learn from them, understand their individual strength and see their vulnerabilities. Humanity to me is the most beautiful thing in the world and I paint to capture not only the external beauty, but also the parts of humanity that we hide from others.” With an interest in using life-size canvases and depicting women of all walks of life, a link exists between the scale of her work, the strength of her subject and the intent and impact of her message. The painter believes there is no better way to highlight this connection than making the piece so large it’s the first thing you notice when you walk into a room.

Looking Back & Coming Up Up next for the artist: a pop-up show in Paris. With the working title, FOREVER, the innovative series takes inspiration from vintage Parisian magazines such as Elle, reexamines the nature of nostalgia and reinterprets the original models by replacing them with her own peers. After a particularly difficult year within her family life, the painter reflects on her childhood and the foundation of her life with a sense of yearning, which elicits nostalgia. However, simultaneously, this period has caused Grounds to become the most adaptable version of her. “My upcoming show explores these personal changes, yet it hones in on the turning points and moments in my life that stuck with me, shaped me and gave me [this] sense of self-identity,” she states.

www.creativmag.com | Jan - Feb 2020 | CREATIV | 67

Free Expression | Alexandra Grounds

The starting point: while wandering through a flea market in Paris as a child, with her mother, Grounds came across countless boxes of vintage magazines in her own words showing the most vibrant, beautiful and strong women and drawing out a deep sense of femininity.

Making the discovery at a young age, Grounds was still coming into her own. Years later, following the re-surfacing of these covers in regards to her own depiction of women in her artwork, she realized the limited portrayal of idolized women in these images. “In painting my friends and women I know in conjunction with the women who caught my eye as a little girl and gave me a sense of my own womanhood, I’m touching upon my past, present and hopes for a stronger future,” she adds.

68 | CREATIV | Jan - Feb 2020 | www.creativmag.com

Scratch Wearable Tech, Snatch Wearable Art According to the press release, Grounds is taking her large-scale, hyperrealist paintings and incorporating them onto leatherware to create wearable works of art. By expanding her brand identity and establishing her debut fashion line, Houx, Grounds is turning fashion items into moving canvases and posing larger questions about the accessibility and consumption of art. [“I’m looking to close the gap between art and people’s interaction with it on a day-to-day basis. It’s wearable art, it’s turning a person into a breathing canvas. I want my work to spark conversation, bond people and provide a sense of self. We construct versions of ourselves every day – especially with the clothes we wear and I love the idea of my work taking part in that kind of empowerment,”] she concludes.

Writer's Corner | New Film: Cunningham Have you ever pondered if Art had a beginning, what were its originators thinking and why is it most important in our lives today? Today we learn about a renown choreographer, creator and artist in the Performing Arts whose contribution to Modern Lyrical Dance can indeed be considered an elaborate contribution to the history of the Arts. The following documentary film is a 3D cinematic experience about legendary American choreographer Merce Cunningham. CUNNINGHAM traces Merce Cunningham's artistic evolution over three decades of risk and discovery (1944-1972), from his early years as a struggling dancer in postwar New York to his emergence as one of the world's most visionary choreographers. The 3D technology weaves together Merce's philosophies and stories, creating a visceral journey into his innovative work. A breathtaking explosion of dance, music, and never-before-seen archival material, CUNNINGHAM is a timely tribute to one of the world's greatest modern dance artists. Through body movement, free expression and discipline we follow the life of Merce Cunningham as he impacts generations of art enthusiasts through Modern Dance choreography. His teachings still to this day has become the blueprint for Modern Lyrical Dance today.

Through body movement, free "I am particularly moved by his story –– an incredible triumph of the human spirit. During the first 30 years of his career (between 1942-1972), he persevered, with great determination and stamina, to make dances against all odds. He was always ready to get outside himself, to place himself in unknown situations, and find new solutions. All this took place in a unique artistic climate, during the 1950s and 1960s in New York, when Cunningham and his collaborators were “united by their poverty and ideas” and art and life had virtually no separation." – Director Alla Kovgan One of the most impactful performances that we find memorable depicts the pain of a people during war. Writer's Corner | Culture and Art Artistic communities within a city tend to be the focal points of the culture representing said city. Culture is the heartbeat of any city, it defines its residents, its history and sheds light on its future. Several cities are redeveloping themselves to become urban meccas of the 21st century. With this redevelopment creatives are gaining opportunities to transform their underdeveloped neighborhoods into thriving communities. It’s a more positive perspective of gentrification. Creatives can make art out of anything they see fit, so why can’t the same be done for a community that was once bare be transformed into a center to represent the culture of the city? Nashville, TN is transforming into an urban mecca with artistic communities, with means of introducing the culture to the Tennessee Valley. The city has always had a name within the music industry which created a profound musical impact talked about around the globe. The country music capital is slowly stepping out of the shadows and adding art to its portfolio. Several creatives had nursed an art community that is gaining some volume in the music city streets. Neighborhoods like Wedgewood-Houston and Downtown Nashville are cultivating spaces that can house creatives looking to expand their horizons. It’s the perfect breeding ground for artists to capture the essence of a growing environment before the boom takes place. Creativ had the opportunity to visit the city of Nashville and witness the beautiful districts of Wedgewood – Houston, and areas in Downtown Nashville. The best chance to experience all the art would be to attend the First Saturday Art Crawl that’s held every first Saturday of the month. Art Crawl is a great introduction into the Nashville art scene, you get to enjoy a stride while taking it all in. My first stop on the Art Crawl was Downtown Nashville – 5th Avenue of the Arts had some amazing galleries. The Rymer Gallery and Tinney Contemporary were just a delight. I also was able to visit galleries located in the Arcade which is an outdoor plaza with stores and restaurants. Each gallery represented several established or emerging artists displaying their creations for the public. After visiting downtown, I was able to hop over to the artistic neighborhood of Wedgewood – Houston the redeveloped neighborhood up and coming home to eclectic bars, breweries

and galleries. Two of the galleries, Channel to Channel and Zeitgeist both held interesting art that defined the state of the area. Creativ’s focus is to highlight art communities and give emerging artists an opportunity to have their art showcased to a broader audience. Our range is not limited, so we are always searching to experience the influence artists portray in their work. Nashville has an art scene that is on the rise and growing attention rapidly. The art communities are excited about the crowds flocking to their neighborhoods to see what the city has to offer. It’s great to come to a city focused around music to get a surprised interaction into its art scene.

You made it very clear early last year that you wouldn’t deal with your ex’s foolishness. You gave him/her all the reasons you had bottled up, combined with what you wouldn’t tolerate, and you socked it to them! By New Year’s Eve, you were back in your ex’s arms (or bed) smitten by their affectionate and repetitive words/actions. Now, you’re confused and distraught. The same reasons you threw the peace sign to your ex and made it for the door, are the same reasons you’re fed up and regret moving backwards. While it may hurt to hear, you’ll become emotionally drained if you keep going back into a situation with your ex. Reconciling is a normal thing to do for people in relationships. However, constantly entering a tainted relationship, that offers not great outcomes, is emotionally unhealthy. For one, it becomes tiresome when you have to deal with the same issues, from the same person, in which you’re trying to love. For two, it creates a lot of emotional baggage that must get tossed in order to move forward with success. The biggest factor people struggle with in getting back with their ex, is whether their ex has changed. Sure, change is good, and people can modify their behaviors, but your ex might be a different story. Consider that your ex would have to change something in order for things to work out between the two of you. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be your ex. It’s almost like getting your pet dog to obey you, when all along you’ve spoiled it rotten— (not gonna happen!) One thing’s for sure, and two things for certain, is that you’ll wear yourself thin going back and forth with the same person and you’re draining what’s left of your dismantled heart. Try not to

indirectly let your old flame feel that you’re okay with whatever they did in the past, just because you don’t want to throw away a number attached to the years you spent together in your combined relationships. I get it; it’s hard leaving behind the man or woman you once loved. Memories are created, bonds are built, and stories are conceived. But let’s face it, your ex is not the only man or woman on Earth, and you have to believe that you could find true love elsewhere if your ex situation is an ongoing thing. If you’re reasonably uncomfortable with how you feel when you’re dating your ex, that means you’re not happy. It also means, neither are they. Stop going crazy returning to an ex who seems to always want to patch things up while you help put broken pieces together. You’ll appreciate your bold move in the long run, and you’ll make room for the new man or woman you’d never leave behind—ever!

The term invincible is defined as “too powerful to be defeated or overcome; incapable of being conquered or subdued.” Chew on that for a bit; let it marinate. What does it take to reach the point wherein nothing can defeat you?

And should all else fail, do not let despair cause you to lose sight of honesty. Denial One certainty is you don’t just stumble upon serves no purpose beyond inadvertently it. Preparation is key. You must get ready – causing a trial to last much longer than it and stay ready – long before sinister days needs to. It is not in our genetic make up to arrive.
