The MIAMI SWIM issue

W

Whew! We are already at mid-year, Can you believe it? Summer is in full effect and Swim Week just happened. However I have to say that this year was the best yet. Sports Illustrated just gave us the show of our lives. The female beauty was represented on all front, from plus size women to women in wheel chairs to bald women, young, old, Black, White, Asian, Muslim the show left the audience in awe and thinking that truly we could all live in a world where we can accept each other with our flaws, faults and characteristics. On another note get your beach balls because the swimwear this year will have you pull out your wallets. We also had the privilege of featuring international singing artist Milca from Paris, France. A musical gem in the Caribbean community. Moreover, great movies to watch this summer, check out Brian Banks the biopic that tells the story of a relentless fighter. It would not be a complete issue without the art. Abstract artists Aram Amini and Anastasiia Franchuk. Two women who immerse themselves into their craft while giving meaning to it all. A special thank you to photographer Chris Jacques who shot our cover this month the details of this photography can truly be admired. Thank you to our writers and our contributing photographers. Summer is here and if we could slow time down we would. Here is to our 33rd issue. Enjoy!

Anastasiia Franchuk CHANGING THE WORLD ONE PAINTING AT A TIME

Photographer: Roman Kost

18 | CREATIV | Jul - Aug 2019 | www.creativmag.com

Anastasiia Franchuk was born in Odessa, Ukraine in 1995. She grew up by the Black Sea where she spent her childhood. Inspired by seeing the horizon line being blended between heaven and earth and colorful reflections on the water started to bring dreaminess and mystery into her first paintings.

A

At the age of 15 she attended Grekov Odessa Art School - the oldest and one of the most renowned schools of art in the country where she was professionally trained. After the graduation she moved to Western Ukraine and studied at Transcarpathian Art Institute for two more years learning about authentic Ukrainian art and folk crafts. While traveling to various countries she did different art programs in the United States, Europe and Asia. She also apprenticed under world renowned artists John and Elli Milan at Milan Art Institute in Arizona. She now uses multiple mediums such as oil, acrylics, caran d'Ache, and Krink pens, along with many mixed techniques to achieve her finished pieces.

Her vividly colorful paintings involve real life inspirations, mostly horses and other animals that carry personal meaning. She connects with the horse on a deep emotional level. Wild horses have captured her heart with their beauty, freedom and untamed inner spirit. She loves to ride and galloping on a horse also making her feel unlimited and set free. Anastasiia plans to continue to travel and evolve her art. Franchuk says: “I believe that art is a great tool which makes a difference in this world. It doesn’t have language or cultural barriers and it’s speaks directly to the collectors heart”. As an artist she wants to inspire others to believe in their dreams and pursue their destiny. Her art could be found in private collections in United States, Israel and Europe.

Artist Spotlight | Aram Amini

written by

LauraShirk

ABSTRACT ARTIST ARAM AMINI

24 | CREATIV | Jul - Aug 2019 | www.creativmag.com

A

As a first generation Iranian-American and the daughter of a jewelry designer, Aram Amini analyzes cultural movements and unique materials to create, collaborate and decorate. Full of color and rich in texture, the painter and mixed media artist aims to create a body of work that is a direct expression of her own style and the only one of its kind. The first word that comes to mind: vibrant. Receiving constructive criticism from her father early on, Aram learned how to slow down and take time with each piece. Considering the application of hundreds of individual hand-painted silk rose petals in The Petal Collection, a valuable lesson. With the showcasing of different types of gems and fine jewelry, her mixed media work is not only a reflection of herself, but also an extension of her father. Born in Montreal, Canada, the artist started painting at the age of 8 and developed a distinct sense of style both on and off the canvas. Crossing borderlines, Aram began her career in New York City and later moved to Austin, Texas, to establish a life and expand her network in the industry. In combination with the portrayal of women under various social and political landscapes, Aram is inspired by fashion. From fashion magazines and runway shows to fabrics and textiles, she draws from elements throughout the world’s (changing) wardrobe and notes that each collection has its own source of inspiration.

Embracing The Beauty of Women

As the primary focus of fashion over the years, women’s style is a primary form of expression – one that Aram doesn’t take for granted. Through patterns, prints and color combos, we have the ability to make a statement and convey our individuality. However, freedom of expression is limited in some other countries. When the artist paints women specifically, she often thinks about how her art and career would be different if she’d grown up in Iran. Although described as autobiographical, Aram’s body of work channels the women of her own cultural background. “My work, especially in referencing the use of unique materials and subjects, is heavily influenced by my background as a first-generation Iranian-American. The inspiration of my painted subjects stems from the historical backdrop of empowered women through fashion and cultural movements and represents resilience, freedom and self-actualization.

26 | CREATIV | Jul - Aug 2019 | www.creativmag.com

Aram Amini Declares Fashion is Freedom Creating art is not only something that has been a passion since childhood, but it is also a comment on personal appreciation and progression. Taking into consideration the stance of Iranian women today – how they are governed to hide their beauty – I embrace the beauty of women within my own artwork and explore how they openly play an essential role in fashion as an art form],” explains Aram. Fusing bold lips, beautiful bling, forward fashion and a whole lot of glam, Aram’s The Vogue Collection is inspired by the 2014 Vogue Paris campaign, Cocktail D’été. Taking a cue from the styling of each model, the artist collaborated with her father to bring the campaign to life on canvas and re-invent its focus on jewelry. Each work is hand-painted with Swarovski crystals, various gemstones and one or two pieces of her father’s jewelry. With an extra splash of color (and attitude), the series is purely playful on the surface.

“Exploring the dichotomy between reality and perception, the hatcovered [figures] in my Vogue Collection reflect a symbolic connotation and a nod to covered Iranian women. By employing fashionable imagery to allegorically express an ideology, I allow the unreal elements of the real to assume the elements of the real,” she shares. This summer, Aram is exhibiting three Vogue works in a group exhibition in NYC at Amsterdam Whitney Gallery. On the go: the artist is working on a diptych piece to add to The Petal Collection. This time around, she’s teaming up with her husband and trying something different. Trading cocktails and costumes for skulls and camouflage, Aram is exploring symbols of masculinity. To learn more about Aram, check out her work online: http://aram.gallery or follow her on Instagram: @aram.instagallery

I

I met Milca about 8 to 9 years ago at a small studio in Miami, I was appointed to interview her for the 5Sur5tV show. From then until now she has always been a beautiful soul, a simple woman in pursuit of her dreams. Gifted with such a beautiful voice she has been serenading the Caribbean community for years. I still remember dancing to the tunes of her ever so popular song “Simplement” (Simply) [Click on link audio to listen]. It is today a privilege to feature her on our cover, Photographed by the talented Chris Jacques of Kokakjacq. She is now touring the United States promoting her latest album. She’s already performed in New Orleans, Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Miami. Her ever growing fan base is in for treat as she has already begun on the production of her new album to be launched hopefully in 2020.

mesmerizing voice of Milca. In Creole, English or French, Milca crosses borders and enchants with the collaboration of Arly Larivière of the Haitian singing group Nu Look on "You and Me" or a collaboration with Lukay, Canadian sensation on the duo «Âmes Soeurs»(Sister Souls). Milca is areal musical treat! Born for music ... Brought up by a father who happens to be a music lover, collector of vinyls and particularly a fan of Kompa, her innate talent for singing is revealed from childhood. In Guyana, where she grew up, Milca sometimes sings for the Salvation Army and sometimes for family and friends. She evolved with different musical influences ranging from Zouk to Jazz and others. Milca's predispositions for music became clearer especially with Hip-Hop and Rnb.

"Simplement" by Milca

In an effort to get to know her better we’ve made her biography available for her fans through the following: [Translated] Expected after the launch of the title "No More", Milca's new album entitled «A l’abri du temps» (Under Time’s Protection) is finally available! Milca takes us back to her musical world sprinkled with Zouk and Kompa love. She offers us sincere words on the compositions and achievements of talented musicians and artists. «A l’abri du temps» (Protected from Time), signed under the label Mass Production, is a musical journey of 13 timeless tracks. Mariah Carey has always been one of her main inspirations. Although she is taking her first steps in the industry under this label, It is AfroCaribbean music that will reveal her to the public in 2005 with the album «Simplement» (Simply), whose eponymous title track immediately became a success and will become a classic in the genre of zouk. Having thus found her voice, Milca asserts herself through, warm, sensual music of character. The confirmation comes in 2007 when she receives the award for best female performer of the AfroCaribbean Awards Trophées des Arts. Soon after followed her success. Her powerful yet delicate voice made Milca one of the most unforgettable artists of the AfroCaribbean scene. Deeply anchored as a Haitian born in Guyana, her story is, from the start, the story of a journey between two lands of which she is the hyphen. Milca offers her audience an art that looks like her: sincere and timeless. Today, it's with the captivating title "No More", from her latest album «À l’abri du temps» (Under Time’s Protection) released on May 18, 2018 Milca offers the public a new page of her musical history.

The True Definition of Relentless

The inspirational true story of

W

We all know the story of Brian Banks, who made headlines back in 2002 for being wrongfully accused of a crime he didn't commit. 17 years later, his name is making headlines again, look out for his biopic called Brian Banks, is set to hit theaters on August 9th, 2019. Starring Aldis Hodge, depicting the inspirational true story of how Brian Banks is railroaded through a broken justice system and sentenced to a decade of prison and probation. Years later, with the support of Justin Brooks (Greg Kinnear) and the California Innocence Project, Banks fights to reclaim his life and fulfill his dreams of playing in the NFL. His story is beyond a shadow of a doubt the true testament of what a relentless spirit looks like. Though we know how the story ends, we see how the justice system can be broken at times when evidence is omitted in a legal case. It costs him 11 years of his life however if it wasn't for his consistency and relentlessness of seeking justice, he would have ended up being labeled "accused" for the rest of his life. Let's not forget that because of Wanetta Gibson's false claims he was facing 41 years in prison, he instead was suggested by his lawyer to take a plea deal that would reduce his sentence to 5 years behind bars and 5 years probation. “He’s a role model for everyone, because he never gave up. This ordeal changed his life, but he knew he had to continue living it somehow.” states producer Shivani Rawat However, there is so much I could say about the woman who made those false claims, shining the light on how her hurt escalated into malicious revenge and greed, or how all this could have been avoided only if he had talked to her and

Brian Banks not neglected her, leaving her feeling rejected and abandoned in that small window of time. Unfortunately human beings who fuel their emotions with damaging actions, tend to be part of a never ending chain of broken souls who breed other broken souls who could care less about the consequences that their decisive actions could have on the life of others. But alas the story is not about Wanetta, it's about Brian. Today Brian is a former linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons, in 2014 he accepted a job with the front office of the NFL and also recently published a book titled What Set Me Free. As a free man he turned the biggest obstacle of his life into victory. He is now an advocate for the Innocence Project and continues to lend his voice in finding justice for the wrongfully accused. Banks supports CIP in its efforts on behalf of the wronglyconvicted, including participating in CIP's 2013 Innocence March. He often wears a shirt with the lettering "XONR8" ("exonerate").

exuberance. The brand helps customers curate looks that are tailor-made by selling all two piece tops and bottoms separately. This allows customers to mix, match and combine styles that highlight their best features. Chic ready to wear styles are prominent in the new collection as well for the brand since expanding their selection of clothing and cover-ups. Not only are the resort wear pieces carefully designed to compliment the swimwear, they are versatile enough to be worn day or night and can be styled for any occasion. These garments highlight luxe fabrications, including lightweight silk, cotton, and voiles in sophisticated, yet spirited prints.

B.A.E TOUR FASHION, ART, CELEBRATION ALL IN ONE FOR A GREATER CAUSE

In this day and age, it feels like more and more self-care among black families and especially among black women is never a priority. Kimberly Clarke took it upon herself to change this stigma by putting up her first its Annual Beautiful and Empowered (B.A.E.) Tour Scholarship Fundraiser, not only putting emphasis on the way we should treat ourselves but also on rewarding the young generation with scholarships that would help them in furthering their education. Our Mission is To inspire and empower self love and self care. Self Love Starts with You and we empower individuals to take the natural approach while being the best version of themselves. We only provide the best ingredients for your skin.

The day included countless activities empowering attendees in areas of self-love, self-care, health, wellness, fitness, education, financial literacy, natural hair and skin care. Additionally highlighted Art, Fashion and even a Panel of discussion towards general health and wellness featuring Culinary: Celebrity Chef Rudy Poindexter (Chef by Nature Inc.); Hair Care: AnneMarie (CEO of Kinks Couture); Agriculture: Anuella (Founder of A Green Community) ; Fitness: Khadija (CEO of Khadija’s Wholistic Fitness, LLC); Painter: Eric (CEO of Promanence) ; Violinist: Lisa ; Fashion Designer: Fabiola of Constant Beau ; Designer: Lavi of Lavi Couture ; Designer: Kimberly of KC Essentials

hat do you see when you close your eyes?

Many think back to a happy time, a suspended moment of joy where all was at peace in their world or when they were celebrating having achieved a new milestone. Some see themselves along with others, friends and family that have been instrumental in helping them reach new heights or overcoming obstacles.

Avoid pressuring yourself to reach your final destination at record speed. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day; rather, focus on establishing a solid foundation that will bear the force of ANYTHING. Time and again, life bears testimony to a most powerful lesson: good things come to those who wait. True excellence can be neither faked nor rushed, so take your time. Make it your aim to never let a single day go by where you haven't visualized accomplishing your goals. It is only when you can see it, that you will achieve it. The platform of success is well within your reach as long as you maintain diligent focus.

Sadly, numerous people see/feel/hear nothing. Fraught with despair and consumed by fear, they stand at a loss. This group struggles under the weight of anxiety-inducing dilemmas and waste precious energy wondering what ill wind might blow their way next.

Should you sense that your vision is getting blurry (i.e., your dreams are fading into oblivion and seem unattainable), close your eyes. Silence your phone, turn off the television, mute the radio and go to a quiet place. Take several deep breaths, inhaling then Now what if you had the ability to always exhaling with purposeful intent. Harness see a brighter tomorrow? This is where the raw energy of believing in yourself, VISION comes in to play. Placing yourself then channel it into creating the best on the path to success lies in navigating future imaginable. life's storms with the cool confidence of a seasoned, sea-faring captain that has See you next time ;) conquered raging waters more times than he count. When setting your sights on the good things to come, simplicity is key. Complexity will only result in frustration; the ultimate goal is to stay lifted for the duration of the journey. Untold numbers have lost their footing, and helplessly watched as their fragile dreams shattered into nothing more than jagged shards of glass.

The Things You're Bringing in from the Past, that Make Your New Relationships Unsuccessful 92 | CREATIV | Jul - Aug 2019 | www.creativmag.com

Your past is a part of you. It’s a part of your emotions, feelings and thoughts; and as far as I’m concerned, those things go wherever you do. However, putting your emotions and feelings from your past hurt onto a man or woman who has nothing to do with it, is a surefire way for you to do or say things that will keep your new relationship from blossoming.

Finally, refrain from ever bringing up your former heartbreaks and heartaches. Remember, a pivotal part of every relationship is learning and growing from it. It doesn’t mean you neglect your feelings, but constantly bringing up what someone else did to hurt you, will make your new partner think you need emotional counseling and that’s asking a lot of anyone! You’ll have all the time in the world to vent about your past While most single women/men on the dating with your partner, so there is no need in scene are looking to land a good catch, they giving away too much to a man or woman may be the very reason why the good catch you’re getting to know in the early stages. comes along… and then it’s gone! If you are that single person I’m referring to, then your Believe it or not, we inadvertently say and do story probably goes like this: You meet a things already that show our emotional side guy/girl, you engage in a few conversations, and reveal things from the past. However, go on a few dates, and before you know it, you never want to be intentionally you say or do off-the-wall things relating to responsible for making a great person walk your past, and it sends your new partner (or away because you couldn’t control your urge potential partner) heading for the back door. to bring-up your badly bruised past and making suggestive comments that weren’t When you’re getting to know your potential thought-out. partner, everything should be fun and easy. Talks of negativity dealing with your past For the future, focus on the now and even shouldn’t be brought into something fresh what could be. Leave all negativity and false and new. Sure, potential partners may want hopes in the past where they belong and to know what went on in your past, but the watch how your new relationships flourish information you share shouldn’t overwhelm because of it. the other person or make them feel inadequate as a result of your ex’s behavior. Another form of digging-up your past and having it hinder your current situation, is demanding that your new partner commits to things your ex didn’t. If your ex was lousy at cleaning to your liking or didn’t have the most perfect dining etiquette, you can’t force the new person in your life to be perfect at those things. As people, we could all use help in certain areas of our lives. Understanding the other person and their willingness to adjust, is a great start to someone you can healthily date. The moment you try to make sure your new beau or lady doesn’t mess-up like your ex, you’re on the road to destroying something that could’ve grown into a forever partnership.

They say that there are more pink flamingoes made in plastic then there are in reality. And where does one find the plastic ones the most? Miami. Welcome to Miami. Will smith sing all the way? They say that party never ends on the Miami beaches. Being on the southern most tip of America it enjoys the maritime climate. So very fit for the other wise cold country. The golden sands on Miami beaches attract millions and you find yourself among the most number of people if you decide to go in the fall. The year was 1895 when the Americans realized that to save the travelers from the intense cold they must move to the southern tip of Florida. And thus came up the biggest state of Florida - Miami.

come in a big way for the place by the infusion of many films and television feature shootings in and around the beaches. The regional art too is picking pace and the local museums and art galleries are encouraging the locals to show their talents. These art galleries too form an important part of the Miami travel schedule. The lively nightlife of the place is just electrifying and the people enjoy their lives out on the beaches in the nighttime. Sitting around slowing fires they have the time of their lives.

Known for not only its beaches, it has the biggest of the universities. The city finds its Latin roots come handy when it comes to hospitality. It has finest hotels of whole America and the best beaches too. The American holiday cannot be defined with out the Miami factor. It has reached deep in to the Hollywood and the glory runs too deep. Even the hurricane and the shark threats do not falter the tourist faith and no body wants to miss the chance to go to Miami, Florida. The place has wonders in store for the gourmet. The food styles expand from the continental to the seafood extravagance. The effect of the Caribbean food is too extensively seen in the menu cards. The Cuban and the Latin food are also very famous in the city. Mangoes, coconut, rice, fish, crabs and oysters all form important ingredients in the food list. The beaches give ample space and opportunity for the sports enthusiasts. The beach volleyball events as well as the water sports are found all over the place. The clubs and small set pups provide many options for people to enjoy. The Parasailing is also picking up at a fast pace. The water scooter is very popular among the youngsters. For the not-so-sporty types the beach is full of serene places to bask in the sunny sands. The tan is lasting and the experience is magical. Apart from these the place is known for its football, baseball, hockey and basketball teams. Major players of these teams come from the universities. The art and culture of Miami is one of its kinds and is rich with artifacts and regional styles. Apart from these the pop culture has www.creativmag.com | Jul - Aug 2019 | CREATIV | 95
