The planet is hurting. This will probably mark a moment in history that none of us will ever forget. The globe must live through a pandemic caused by the Corona Virus. It has ravaged China, Italy, France and now has reached the U.S. and it doesn’t look like it’s stopping anytime soon. Though we didn’t get the chance to launch the magazine in Los Angeles California as planned, we are still thankful for all the support that we’ve received leading up to this date. Extending a special THANK YOU to Jean-Philippe Beaulieu who helped us navigate around the city and without whom we would not have had made such beautiful acquaintances. We will undeniably reschedule our launch at a later date once everything clears and are still excited about meeting our supporters in L.A. We’ve had the privilege of getting to know an amazing woman, an Executive Producer in the world of Hollywood films, Dominique Telson. A true role model for young women everywhere, she is the epitome of #womenwinning in a man’s world. During our initial trip to the beautiful city of L.A. We’ve visited IV Gallery, the current home of the work of Jaz Harold, a visual artist from New York, making headlines in the East and West coasts. We’ve caught up with Naïka, whose voice is unforgettable and visited Galerie Lakaye, a hidden gem of a gallery which showcases Haitian Artists not only from their community but also from around the world. We had so much fun getting to know everyone that we couldn’t wait to get things in motion. I would also like to take this time and thank the new addition to our growing team, Jimmy Moise, our Marketing Executive Director who spearheaded this whole ordeal. This could not have happened without you and we are blessed to have you. In addition to all this excitement, we’ve featured new discovered photographers and artists from the other side of the hemisphere that I think you’ll enjoy. To our writers and contributors, we thank you. You have surpassed our expectations in this issue, so without further ado, raise your glass to ISSUE #37! Enjoy!

Jaz Harold is a New York based sculpture artist. Her work embodies themes of purification, catharsis, and growth, while consciously appealing to child-like naĂŻvetĂŠ. Jaz's works are soft and inviting, rich with plush fabrics, blooming flowers, and pastel tones. They are at once feminine, sensual, and innocent. Raised in a family that entwined sex with shame and guilt, Jaz searches for independence and balance in her work. In doing so, she creates gentle, approachable, and occasionally humorous reflections on sex, love, and spiritual growth.

In 2018, Naïka graduated from Boston’s prestigious ‘Berklee College of Music’ with a degree in Professional Music. Her songwriting abilities were first recognized when she won a scholarship in BMI’s annual John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship, where she was awarded first runner up in the nation-wide competition. In 2017, she took the Haitian community by storm after releasing her take on the forgotten traditional song “Papa Gede Bel Gason”, which accumulated over 1M views online. Pop-Up Gallery | Galerie Lakaye

Galerie Lakaye Haitian native Carine Fabius and her French sculptor husband, Pascal Giacomini, opened Galerie Lakaye in September 1990. Galerie Lakaye’s unique concept, which features art in a home setting (as is the case for many dealers back in the Caribbean) introduced new and seasoned buyers to Haitian art in a comfortable, casual atmosphere reminiscent of a private club. The look of the gallery, as designed by Pascal Giacomini, features two sculpture gardens; renowned NY furniture designer Tucker Robbins’ modern furniture within the architecture of an early 1900’s Craftsman-style house. As a result, an impressive number of publications featured the gallery in their pages, expanding the scope of its clientele and reputation. These publications include Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, Vanity Fair and Bon Appetit Magazine (six-page spread), among others. Television and radio programs followed.

20 | CREATIV | Mar - Apr 2020 | www.creativmag.com

The gallery has participated in numerous prestigious art fairs around the country, including Art L.A., Chicago International Art Exposition, ArtExpo-Los Angeles, ArtExpo-New York, and a host of important smaller local art venues. Although a modest art space, Galerie Lakaye is a high profile entity that attracts museum-stature artists from the Caribbean art world and other art markets as well. In the 90s, the owners of Galerie Lakaye expanded their horizons by reaching out to other islands in the Caribbean and to the Latin American art world, as well. They attended Arte Mexico in Guadalajara to seek out Mexican artists as a first effort in that realm. In the process, the gallery attracted many new and influential artists, who continue to exhibit their works at the gallery. Since then, the gallery has continually reached out to other countries in search of new artists inspired by the Black and multi-ethnic experience. In the recent past, Galerie Lakaye has hosted exhibits featuring contemporary works in various mediums by artists from the U.S., Brazil, Senegal, Cuba, Switzerland, Panama, New Guinea, Peruvian Amazon and, as always, Haiti.

Carine Fabius has curated over 100 exhibits for the gallery, as well as for various museums and other Los Angeles Cultural Affairs venues. Some of these exhibits include Serving the Lwas: Vodou Gods of Haiti for the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles; Haiti: Where Spirits Dance for Museum at Center for the Arts, Escondido; Healing: A Cultural Exploration for the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles; and Tropics: A Contemporary View of Brazil, Cuba and Haiti for the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park. She is also the author of six books: MEHNDI, the art of henna body painting; Ceremonies for Real Life; Sex, Cheese and French Fries; Jagua, A Journey into Body Art from the Amazon; Saturday Comes, A Novel of Love and Vodou; and Short Stories About Us. Carine was also a blogger at Huffpost for 10 years until they shut down their blogger platform in 2018. www.galerielakaye.com galerie@galerielakaye.com Phone: 323-460-7333 www.creativmag.com | Mar - Apr 2020 | CREATIV | 21

omen are winning in 2020! And such is the state of affairs of Dominique Telson, an award winning executive producer in the Hollywood Film Industry. Her story begins in her teenage years when her heart was set on being a writer. Not a story writer but a journalist. With this dream in place she pursued her studies in journalism as expected even though she thought that being a pediatrician would have been more fun. However, the idea of going to the hospital and doing volunteer work didn't look like her path at all. With this thought in mind, she went into journalism. Throughout that journey she went on to intern at ABC working in the editorial department. She had to read every single article that came through the department, every single publication and from there she had to pick six topics that she would bring to senior management , from there she would write the topic, write the network’s point of view, and then she had to present it to the senior management to decide what their position was going to be at ABC. Once the topic was settled, on it was her job to know how it was going to be filmed. She had the opportunity to produce a whole segment “So, we had to find the subject, like we're going to talk about makeup, I had to find a makeup artist. And what do you think about the new laws about makeup? And talk to them, and film in front of a school for example....” She explains. Being so knee deep into production during her internship she decided to take classes on Television Production. Her first film was on abortion and the effects it has on women, one of her favorites. From there, she was hooked. “Ordering your camera men and giving instructions on set was like a high “And so, that's when I knew that's what I wanted to do.” As time passes by, though she had the opportunity of working with the American Society of Interior Designers, that wasn’t quite the path she wanted to follow. However, she went on to work with Showtime Networks in New York as a clerk typist, right out of College making only $197 a week. From there she made her way up to the acquisitions department where she was in charge of buying finished films. Funny story is that every Black history month she would be the one they would turn to in order to get black films to showcase. Amidst meeting the right people and with the drive to be successful in the film industry, she was able to break that door in by becoming the producer she was meant to be.

28 | CREATIV | Mar - Apr 2020 | www.creativmag.com

Working with people such as John Basey who mentored her, Pearlina Igbokwe who is now the president at NBC Productions, Bobby Martis who she was challenged by on set, every day, she’s grown to love the industry despite the hurdles she had to face. Though her debut as a producer started with short films, her very first feature movie was Running Wild shot in Zimbabwe, Africa. This movie did not come easy for Dominique, as her very first feature movie shot in a different continent, she not only saw the beauty of the Motherland but also had to witness the hurt and agony our ancestors had to overcome to become who they are today. Adversities create character, had she not gone through her obstacles, she would not have reached Executive levels at Showtime with plenty of Emmy Awards under her belt, nor would she be SVP of Development & Production at Astute Films LLC today. We just had to know how she felt when she produced Best of Enemies working with Taraji P. Henson : “Really good. Acting is not easy. It's a lot of work in front of the camera, behind, doing publicity work. She is one of the hardest working woman I've ever met. She's amazing in many, many ways. So it was great. It was great to see her transform. When we first started doing it... The woman that she's portraying is... When you see the movie is not the most attractive person in the world, and she went there.”

We’ve also realized that most of the movies produced by her are not fiction, but mostly about real life or true inspired stories “I think I tend to gravitate to those stories that make you kind of go whoa or oh my gosh or the triumph of the human spirit…” She states. She’s worked with Hallmark making RomComs and Christmas movies but she definitely gravitates towards those realistic movies that tell inspiring stories. We’ve asked Dominique what is her day to day like as a producer and her answer was just astonishing : “Prayer and thanks. And just settle for a minute. But always thankful, grateful. And then start thinking about my day. My goal is to read a script a day. It doesn't always happens, but I try to read a script a day just so you can get through them all. It's so hard to get through them all. After that, it depends on the day. I usually have a lot of meetings, depending on what's happening. So it's either meetings to get to the next production or I'm in production. I picture myself almost like a juggler where you're juggling throwing up so many projects, but then when you have to stop, when one is actually in production, you have to focus on that one.”

She currently has at least 8 movies in the making as we speak, busy is definitely an understatement when it comes to her schedule. When her kids were younger balancing her family and work was definitely a circus act, juggling children and being a producer in Hollywood is certainly no small task. Indeed her husband at the time and her mother were very helpful in filling in when she had to be away. Jokingly, as she reached the top she was known as the executive with 3 kids. She has had the privilege of being in a position of leadership where she’s mentored black film makers and even young women who wanted to become producers just like her. “I’ll always help, I’ll always do that as much as I am able to do so.” She states.

32 | CREATIV | Mar - Apr 2020 | www.creativmag.com

Last but least your moment of Zen: If you had one message that she would give, a positive message to someone who wants to follow into your footsteps, what would it be? "Don't sweat the small stuff… My goal is always to get the movie made. I don't sweat the stuff that... I don't go crazy over the tablecloth was red. I want it to be blue. And also always respect the people that you work with. So I always respect the person who's doing the makeup. That's a skill that I don't have. I'm always appreciative of every piece of the puzzle because I realize that it takes a village. It takes a village to make a movie. I try to make the villages nice and respectful. People tell me this. Just everybody feels like they're appreciated because really you can't do it without everybody. Look it up. Look at all the pieces that you have to put together just make a shoot. Including you." It was indeed an enlightening conversation with Dominique, we’ve learned so much from her and can’t wait to see what new movies she has coming out for the years to come.

Featured Stories | Barbara Cole

Barbara As a youngster, when Barbara Cole viewed a photograph for the first time, she was in awe of its beauty and the power of a camera. Noted as saying “I became an artist simply by taking pictures,” Barbara’s successful career in the world of photography is based on trial and error and a love of water.

a

With an interesting backstory that includes failing to finish high school, working as a model and taking on the role of fashion editor at a local newspaper at the age of 17, Cole established a beautiful body of work and a distinct style with no formal training. The artist says her experience as a model and fashion editor – especially in the 80s – has shaped her work. Inspired by Sarah Moon, fashion photographer, Cole witnessed someone who was working on both personal projects and fashion accounts and wanted to be part of something special. Looking to make a splash, Barbara opened her own studio and continued to work as a commercial photographer to fund her shows on the side. When Sheila Metzner, the first female photographer to collaborate with Vogue magazine, joined the gang of glossy beauties, Cole learned that a clear division separates art and commerce. And she understands how to walk the fine line between the two. 38 | CREATIV | Mar - Apr 2020 | www.creativmag.com

Cole Making a Splash, Barbara Cole Captures Beauty in Motion

Charley

Describing her creative approach as “raw and hands-on,” Barbara uses the medium of photography as a tool in the image-making process. Beginning her journey in the 1980s with handcolored and appliqued images, she used Polaroid SX-70 (Time Zero) film to move the emulsion pads and simulate the look of an oil painting. However, with the bankruptcy of Polaroid, Cole experienced a major challenge early in her career. To achieve the “painterly quality” she completed using film, Cole slipped underwater to create works that take on a sense of fluidity and weightlessness. “[I deeply respect the history and the technique that photographic pioneers such as Alfred Stieglitz, Eduard Steichen, Heinrich Kuehn and Clarence White employed. So I turn back to analogue – circa 1850 – and I’ve been working to modernize the tintype in a series called Shadow Dancing,]” she explains. The series is almost ready to be viewed.

that it lends to photography. Displaying a dream-like quality, her work captures beauty in motion. Shooting underwater, she practices staying present, following her intuition and creating “a slow moving world.” Although water & figure transformation are main themes among her body of work, Cole introduces new elements to ensure that every project is different.

Whether adapting subject matter, shifting perspectives, changing colors, adjusting lighting or inserting backgrounds, she tells a new story. The photographer believes that shooting underwater is only limiting if she allows it to be. Whether choosing to work with still life or the human body, Cole continuously looks to move forward and explore original ways to convey her message. Prioritizing her own experience over the viewer experience, Barbara aims to reach a state of serenity and re-focus her attention on the natural resource that is often taken for granted. Describing the medium as extremely personal, she still finds it difficult to share her work. Embracing messy working conditions, a short shooting season and the title of pool technician, Cole starts every show with a sense of wonder and the question: what if? In her latest series, Surfacing, the artist examines the topic of mental health and its related struggle, impact and stigma. “Surfacing is fueled by my personal history, and in many ways, is an ode to the power of will and strength it takes to rise above life’s most challenging environments – especially as a woman. I’ve used this series to be open and share 42 | CREATIV | Mar - Apr 2020 | www.creativmag.com

my vulnerability regarding my own mental health struggles,” she adds. Particularly, Cole is targeting a broader audience and tackling topics often neglected or ignored such as assault, depression and suicide. Beyond making a difference through creating, exploring and exhibiting, Barbara has provided useful links and resources on her website not only to assist those in need, but also promote the accessibility of seeking help and accepting support. Over the last year, Barbara has teamed up with renowned organizations including Bell Let’s Talk and the Campaign to Change Direction to further their initiatives in spreading awareness of mental health issues.

Guilty This series consists of a recreation of mugshots that represent the idea of being guilty because of diversity. The minimalist police photographs work as an unexpected ironic twist of a terrible reality. Society judges and blames them because of being different due to their age, genre identity, sexual orientation, height, weight, overall appearance and other basic reasons for discrimination. This dark photo-narrative tries to bring some human light, making people conscious of the importance of acceptance through empathy. Its main purpose is to stop prejudices and social rejection.

against the labels to fight for equality. In fact, this also coincides with my last interest in photography that is documenting identity. In the first edition, I presented a page of an American Yearbook as a symbol of achievement and realization because of being diverse with female participants. For the second part of this project, we focus on male roles and the people involved have also suffered prejudices because of distinct issues. Guilty portrays them sarcastically as arrested individuals as a sign of society’s failure to value differences and to break old rules. It’s time to change and to start the revolution of love.

This conceptual work is my personal response to the second part of a bigger project entitled “1 2 3 No Hashtags” that is Photographer/Seigar Designer/ La Trajería De Tenerife Designer/ Tempus by Cristol Velazquez Project Instagram/Project: 1 2 3 No Hashtags 72 | CREATIV | Mar - Apr 2020 | www.creativmag.com

RIVER CITY DRUMBEAT A look into the impact of arts on inner city children

82 | CREATIV | Mar - Apr 2020 | www.creativmag.com

I

It is a fact that hardship hits black and brown communities the most in these United States of America, and because of this generational curse certain luxuries such as art education are not priorities for some of these families. However, knowing the effect that art can have on the imaginative child's brain, it opens up so many opportunities and creates a new outlook on life as this child grows despite the environment they grow up in. However community staples such as Edward White, who devoted his life to leading the River City Drum Corp (RCDC), make a difference in the life of hundreds of these children in the past 30 years. Anne FlattĂŠ and Miami Native Marlon Johnson, directors of the movie River City Drumbeat capture the integral moments of his journey as he not only grooms his replacement but also impacts the next generation of future leaders in the process.

We had the privilege of catching up with Award Winning Film Director Marlon Johnson as he expresses his thoughts toward launching the movie right here in Miami during Miami Film Festival.

good or continue to do good work in the immediate community around them. We live in a world mad still with a lot of challenges and a lot of negativity that is out there. Being able to put good energy out into the world is where I hope people walk away from with this film." he answers The cast and crew of River City Drumbeat

Directors Marlon Johnson and Anne FlattĂŠ

Marlon was born and raised in Liberty City, Florida where he participated in a similar program for children at risk. his upbringing sparked his love for the arts and propelled his desire to immerse himself in the film industry. His first documentary entitled "Deep City" was filmed here in Liberty City "It was about the 1960s soul music scene in Miami and it featured folks who grew up in Liberty City and created art and music in that area. There's no shortage of material that I've made in my career that has not featured Miami I'm still a work in progress and there's so many more stories to tell and I've been solicited to tell more stories about the area. So please stay tuned because that really means the area is a first love of mine. It's just a matter of where the opportunity comes." - he states .

We salute those leaders like Edward White who despite the adversities continue to believe in their community as they keep injecting positivity and empowerment in the generations to follow. Without giving away the movie, Edward faces a tragedy as he loses his granddaughter to the very streets he was trying to shelter her from so we've asked Have you ever had to witness something like that in your lifetime?

"Yeah, I mean, growing up where I grew up and just being in Miami in general, I've had best friends who met that same fate in high school and friends who did not make it. So when we talk about Mr. White's For any artist, presenting their art can rattle the experience with his granddaughter and when we talk nerves a bit. Though he may have done this a about Albert's experience and the friends that he had thousand times, we've asked Marlon what kind of that did not make it, a lot of those stories parallel my impact does he hope that the documentary will have own. But again, part of the theme of the film is they're on its viewers? the life saving, the life changing aspect of the art and that being really a driving force to redeem and to "Well, so it's interesting you asked that. I think that shape lives in a positive way. And that's what saved for me, this film, our film is not one that is of someone me." famous. It is not one that is of a particular historical figure or a historical event. It's about ordinary people As excited as we are for the viewing on March 7th, doing extraordinary work in their own community. I 2020 we've learned an historical moment from Marlon hope that when people, when folks see this film, that that you wouldn't know about the city of Louisville they can see a little bit of Edward in themselves Kentucky: through the people on screen, and that they can have a transformative experience and be inspired to do www.creativmag.com | Mar - Apr 2020 | CREATIV | 83

Writer's Corner | New Film: River City Drumbeat always imagined this film is about a particular area, but it really is about America at large. I would imagine, I'll rephrase it slightly. Imagine if all of the resources that we put into sports, we put into the art and we put into sciences in these underserved neighborhoods of black and brown kids. Yes. How much that would transform the country. [...] It opens up a whole new world that so many kids who have been told no or have been told a very narrow definition of what their narrative should be

The 37th Edition of MDC’S Miami Film Festival Presents the Florida Premiere of There's different audiences that will experience the film in various ways. We premiered in New York this film is about a Southern Midwest thing depending on who you ask and Louisville, Kentucky is really kind of a crossroads of America. It's the gateway to the South, the gateway to the Midwest. It is the home of Muhammad Ali and also Mitch McConnell. So you have that spectrum that I think people aren't necessarily aware of and how a place like Louisville can produce two completely opposite type of individuals. And that was eye opening for me. I did not know that, I did not know it going into the film. I think that audiences will also be surprised by that fact. There are two different Louisvilles. Yeah, there are two different Louisville and we try and explore both sides. So that to me and my creative partner, and that was a very, very eye opening and very interesting. And of course we would never leave you our dear readers without a positive message from our guest. Marlon lastly shares with us: I would say that this is probably one of the biggest takeaways besides the lifesaving properties of being exposed to art, is I've 84 | CREATIV | Mar - Apr 2020 | www.creativmag.com

River City Drumbeat follows the creative community of AfricanAmerican mentors, parents, and youth making their way in the world using cultural and artistic resources in an environment where systemic forces raise barriers to the fulfillment of their dreams. This multigenerational story of music, love, and legacies set against the backdrop of the American South is both unblinking and inspiring.

EFashion VERGREEN Trends

As time passes by, we often see the repeat of fashionable styles making a come back numerous times in magazines and department stores. With this recycle mindset, designers always found a way to keep our attention by accentuating and tweeking vintage styles that certainly will withstand the hands of time. With this said, let's explore some items that I think will live through decades to come.

1: Animal Print Apparel & Polka dot Fashion Animal print clothing is certainly adored by the women of every generation , specifically Tiger print, Leopard print, Cheetah print and Zebra print. Almost every other woman of every era and age will have at least one animal print clothing piece in her closet. As far as the Polka dot fashion is concerned, it came into the spotlight before 19th century. However, subsequently it gained popularity as a fabric pattern. It's a highly demanded pattern in women clothing as well as kids’ frocks.

2: Multiple Straps Watch Back in the 90's, I remember the craze related to the watch in which different colors of numerous straps would be placed in a box along with the dial, so that each strap should be paired with the dial according to the color of the outfit. No need to say, I was crazy about the watch too and just had to have it. Even today, this watch is still available for those who love to rock vintage looks.

Seeing the craze and love attached towards the animal print and polka dot fashion, I don't think this fashion trend will ever whither away.

3) Butterfly Clips Butterfly clips were the rave in my teenage years. Hair accessories complement the outfit as much as jewelry would. Trendy then and still trendy now, no matter the age it is safe to say that butterfly clips will never go out of style.

4: Turtlenecks I believe that no one made the turtleneck more popular than Steve Jobs himself. Leveraging branding and fashion all at once. Turtlenecks are usually worn during the winter. It will NEVER and I mean NEVER run out of style as long as it fulfills the need of warmth during such season. Grateful though, that designers can offer an unlimited choice of colors, fabric and style keeping it fashionable for years to come.

5: Chokers Going to the prom, or perhaps just want an accessory that elongates the neck area? Opt in for a choker. The elegance that a choker provides can never be achieved by any other accessory. One band surrounding the neck with a single jewel completes any off the shoulder dress or fashionable top. Therefore, always in style for this special occasion.

6: Slave Bracelets Slave bracelets, perhaps not the best term for it, though it comes with a bigger meaning, is still an all time favorite. A ring (or rings) chained with the bracelet gives a royal touch to the hand. It can not only be worn by the bride, in Indonesian culture, but also, to adorn oneself on different occasions. The royal look it provides makes it impossible to become out of date.

Should Single Women Be Seeing More Than Two Men at a Time While Dating? Yes. With all humor put aside, the answer to this is simple. For the hopeless romantics and the perfect daters far-and-in-between, this concept may sting a little. The thought of not being able to focus on one man at a time seems gut-wrenching to the women who are looking for monogamy and the pursuit of a steady thing. It’s like drinking dark and white liquor at the same time or eating soup and drinking tea at the same time, hoping for different outcomes. It becomes to be too much and juggling multiple activities seems explosive. While this scary concept may be the reality for some women, it doesn’t take away from the fact that dating various men could regulate sappy feelings and enhance your dating life. There are some good aspects to focusing on one guy while dating, but on the opposite end, not having at least two men to date and hang out with, creates some heavyweight emotions. Now, dating multiple men doesn’t come very easy although it’s recommended; it takes some work dating more than one guy at a time. The slight challenge comes in when having to get familiar with each man’s habits, accommodating each man’s dating style and working on getting to know how you mesh with two or more men. Doing this could take a toll on any single woman, however, for the protection of your heart, your mind and your time, it should be done. The beauty in single women dating two or more men at a time also helps with responsible dating. That means, it’ll help

you balance how you’ll share your time instead of struggling to keep one guy satisfied 12 hours out of the day. It also helps you decide if you’ll reach a certain level of intimacy with one or none of the guys you’re dating because now, you get to choose who lays down with you by comparing what you seek most in an intimate partner. Most importantly, dating two or more men at once allows you to see who you genuinely like versus who you might be forcing a relationship with just because you’re single. Let me add that dating more than two men at once has nothing to do with promiscuity—let’s be clear. Sex should only be a factor if you let it. The whole idea of dating around is to steer your emotions in the right direction and to avoid honing in on one guy way before its time. Sex is a bonus to dating, and it’s more about not investing too much mentally into one person while you’re figuring out what you want. You see, men, (most times), take on this very concept of multiple dating at a time. They date various women, weigh their options, and call their own shots when it’s time to settle down with someone; women should follow suit. Now again, this multiple dating thing is not for the faint. You must be sure you’ll be confident in doing it and be certain that it’ll work in your favor because you have every right to date around until you land on Mr. Right. Give it a run, have fun and don’t let the intimidation of meeting one guy and sticking to him get the best of your emotions and your heart.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

There are fewer joys in life to which people everywhere can relate than that of delicious food. From the moment we enter this world, we remain on a quest for the next glorious meal. And as we mature, our palates are introduced to an ever-expanding array of artisanal delicacies. Some foodies obsess with keeping up with the latest trends. Others are traditionalists, sticking with the “tried and true.” And who of us will ever forget the mind-boggling wonders of mama’s home-cooked meals? Many popular dishes, lovingly dubbed comfort foods, are both divinely yummy and healing to the soul, reminiscent of younger, carefree years. For the next few minutes, you are invited to join me on a journey of abandon, a temporary lapse of judgment where dietary restrictions are thrown to the wind in honor of the thing most treasured in cuisine: taste. Let’s embrace a new motto: savor the flavor. 92 | CREATIV | Mar - Apr 2020 | www.creativmag.com

Tuck this creative morsel away in a safe place, and refer back to it from time to time as the ultimate cheat-meal guide for those days when your taste buds crave the bliss of freedom. Southern Fried Chicken – this one’s nothing short of a miracle when it’s done right: flavorful and juicy on the inside, light and crispy on the outside. A resounding crunch followed by mountains of yum. Though the star of the meal, she’s rarely a solo performance; instead, enjoy with fluffy waffles topped with maple syrup, tangy potato salad or creamy mashed potatoes swimming in gravy. Burgers & Pizza & Wings, Oh My! When you’re looking for the perfect accompaniment to your ice-cold draft, the search ends here. Flame-grilled or panfried, then piled high with melty cheese, crisp lettuce, robust tomato, sweet onion, pickles and your condiments of choice, nothing says happiness quite like a juicy burger. Moreover, pizza is the universal language of love, what with its flaky crust, tomato sauce, savory cheese, and a plethora of toppings to choose from. Your quest isn’t complete until you’ve found the perfect wing – boneless or bone-in, deepfried or baked and bursting with flavor thanks to tantalizing spices and sensational sauces. Barbecued Ribs – no matter whether your prime pick is baby back, spare, dryrubbed or St. Louis style, you’re in for a treat, even more so if you’ve arrived before cooking is complete to enjoy the smoky aroma wafting through the air. You know you’re in for mouth-watering

decadence when they’re far too tender to stay put on the bone. Pucker up for this foodie delight and remember: the secret’s in the sauce. Macaroni and Cheese – with this comforting dish, the possibilities are endless. Let your imagination run wild with unique flavor combinations. Feeling French? Try it with figs and brie. Need a little spice in your life? Then the hot buffalo wing variety will be to your liking, or a little Cajun andouille sausage with jalapenos and onions. If you prefer to keep it simple, the classic has withstood the test of time. Lasagna, Spaghetti, Penne ala Vodka – while we’re on the subject of pasta dishes, a special round of applause synced with a standing ovation belongs to this Italian trio. Their pinnacle of flavor is achieved with a not-so-secret ingredient: time. Slow-simmered sauces (the ones that literally take hours or days to develop) will make you forget your own name. Add quality mozzarella/asiago/ricotta/ parmesan, fresh basil/oregano/rosemary/ thyme and a lot of love for a life-altering experience you won’t soon forget. A small yet mighty word of caution: ignore the temptation to gobble down these dishes if you’ve built up a voracious appetite; you’ll enjoy them so much more by dining slowly – plus your tummy will thank you later. Bon Appetit!

As one of the Pura Kahyangan Jagat, Pura Ulun Danu Batur is one of the most important temples in Bali which acted as the maintainer of harmony and stability of the entire island.
