The FALL FASHION AND ART issue

L

22nd

Look at our cover. Did you read what was on it? Not only does it give me great pleasure to honor this wonderful artist but also the fact that he has a story to tell about how he beat cancer made it that much more special. Pepe DeSoto is no stranger to CREATIV, we have had the privilege of publishing his art work in our 11th issue and to hear how much of a journey he had, created a sense of urgency to have him one more time in our 22nd issue. In the following pages we tackle some pretty controversial topics. Never before has there been such an emphasis about race in this country. We have come to the point where we fight over the stupidest things in 2017 when actually we should be looking on how to progress instead of regressing. One of those topics is interracial love. To me it doesn’t matter who you fall in love with as long as you cherish and respect this person and are not with them for the wrong reasons. Moreover as you can see, we have introduced to you our 2 newest writers who really brought it, I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next year as we are getting ready to close this year with an awesome issue. New York fashion week made a splash and we have had the privilege of sharing some extraordinary designers with you through the eyes for Dennis Madigan. I can’t thank my contributors enough for always submitting the best content for our magazine. Enjoy our 22nd issue!

NO bo un da ri es

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. - Lao Tzu

With the controversy that our country is facing, one can only imagine how interracial love would be looked down upon. There was a recent movie depicting just that, showcased in 2016 called "Loving". An Interracial couple Richard and Mildred Loving fell in love and were married in 1958. They grew up in Central Point, a small town in Virginia that was more integrated than surrounding areas in the American South. Yet it was the state of Virginia, where they were making their home and starting a family, that first jailed and then banished them. Richard and Mildred relocated with their children to the inner city of Washington, D.C., but the family ultimately tries to find a way back to Virginia. [Read more on Wikipedia] Love has no color , nor those engaged shouldn't be punished for falling in love with another race. It would have been such a boring place if the earth was unilateral. Embrace one another, love one another. Let us build a better world.

ew York definitely brought it this year, with designers raising the bar when it comes to creativity. In this issue with shine the light on Nyeta Allen, young, vibrant, she thinks outside the box, with the help of photographer Jose Pagan she brought to life characters that can definitely be used in a movie, or so we hope. The following is a conversation with Nyeta to get to know what goes on in this beautiful head of hers:

When did you first start designing and what sparked this particular funky style? I started at a very young age it got serious in my 20's I don't think I have a particular style because I do pretty much everything , but my favorite is cultural pieces. I like to incorporate tribal Egyptian or Asian accents . But I also do body paint and have no boundaries when it comes to working with men or children. Is there a celebrity designer that you look up to and why? I try my best not to look at anyone else's style or work. I don't want it in my mind when I'm creating. Never give a reason for anyone to say I copied . The ancestors give me hundreds of visions daily. Why the name Happy Couture when the style seems to me more grunge and goth? This question I read over and over and even asked a few folks. I even had to go look at my work [laugh]. Because there is no grunge at all and little goth. I actually called Jose and asked if they saw my work on Instagram. Because there aren't really any goth either . But

Happy Couture the name comes from me being happy at the time only when I am creating. They usually say that the work of an artist stems from the pain that he has endured, would you say that it is the case for you? I'm not sure about all artists but I do know plenty that have been through the worse of times and yes I'm one of them. I was driven by pain most of my creating career.

Do it all. Never Settle.

produce music make clothes. The world is my canvas. Have you ever exhibited in fashion week outside of the US if not where would be the ideal place for you? What’s next for Happy Couture? I never did Fashion Week . I'm asked all the time to do many shows. I really don't like fashion shows. I'm working on getting out of the thought. But I've done a lot of them and it left bad taste in my mouth. We always like to finish with some words of inspiration for those who look up to you, any advice that you would like to share? I think the advice I normally leave for folks is to do it all. Never settle . If you want to be a designer , a make up artist a singer a dancer a pianist do it . What ever your heart sees fit. I was told Nyeta you have to choose one . I didn't listen. So do it all.

What is so special about this photoshoot? is there a story behind it? The shoot I did with Jose was for his magazine the spring issue. And we did some extra looks. We thought it would have been a waste to keep these pictures hidden. I'm obsessed with art and fashion shooting and I dabble in photography as well. They say that an artist never has one talent, do you have a hidden talent that you would like to share with us? I am multi-talented it's really a blessing . But not hidden at all. Live out all my gifts. I made the decision when I was a child to do whatever my heart desired. I'm a painter, sculptor, singer and I www.creativmag.com | Sept - Oct 2017 | CREATIV | 37

A little note from the stylist, explaining what the concept was for this shoot To be honest, I didn't really have a concept. All I knew was that I just wanted to create some "ART". I thought about all the different types of aspiring women I see on the streets of NY, in the Fall Seasons. Layering away with their garments & how I've always admired how they wear literally, whatever they want. It doesn't even need to make sense. But when it's all put together, somehow it just does. Because it's ART. A form of "Wearable art". So I wanted to see if I could create some Wearable Art myself. From separates & pieces, combining established brands with unknown, aspiring designers. I didn't really know how it was going to turn out. It just so happened that when I reviewed the images, I realized that the images resembled 3 styles of artworks. STILL LIFE - (The Brown look) For its retro appeal. It's small patterns & textiles in natural & warm colors. POP ART - (The Yellow/Blue look) For its bold popping colors & geometric shapes. And... FINE ART - (The white/Purple look) For its whimsical, plant-inspired, gypsy-type theme. So I though that was pretty cool, but I never really thought of it as a concept. I thought of it as "I'm inspired". I guess they're one in the same, Lol.

CHANGING THE HEARTS OF THOUSANDS, YOU CAN EVEN SAY HE IS A SUPERHERO.

joshua

Leonard Looks can be deceiving. Here is a man who has given so much in his lifetime yet has not even begun to live it. Joshua is a cartoonist whose characters are definitely not mainstream. He draws children with superpowers but get this, these children

are physically challenged. It's amazing to see how he sympathizes with these young souls. Children with disabilities would perhaps aspire to be normal, however I believe through this particular outlet a disabled child can find him or herself

in one of these characters and become empowered. We've had the privilege of catching up with Joshua to get to know him and his next moves in this industry.

Zeek Turn, his main character he is autistic.

what a real Super hero looks like

How did you know that you wanted to be a cartoonist? I always knew I wanted to draw and be an animator at a very young age. My older brother taught me how to draw Garfield when I was in kindergarten, and I was pretty good at it. Ever since that day, I never stopped drawing. I just kept learning and learning. I also grew up watching real cartoons, like Looney Toons, and more. When did you first fall in love with art? How did you know this is what you wanted to do? As a child, I knew I wanted to be an athlete and draw for a living, which is why I never stopped drawing. I wanted to learns as much as I could, and still do.

Can you tell us a little bit more about the current project that you are working on, TEAM SUPREME? Yes, I had an idea a long time ago, as I watched many cartoons, and movies. There was a couple of things that I noticed and didn’t like, which was the diversity in cartoons, and the diversity in characters that looked like me. There weren’t any, or wasn’t enough. Me being an animator of color is hard enough, which is another flaw in the entertainment industry, so I knew I had to come up with an idea so dope, that the world would have no choice but to respect it. I came up with the first cartoon called Team Supreme, which is about a group of diverse kids who all have some kind of special need, but they also have super powers. At the moment, my main character ‘Zeek’ is autistic. Then there is ‘Shock’, the amputee, ‘Angel’ is albino, ‘Thumper’ is deaf, ‘Sweet Pea’ has

cancer, ‘Li’ is blind, and ‘Mech’ is paralyzed. Dr. Jackson is the father, and has adopted all of the children. His wife died of cancer during the birth of Sweet Pea. In the future, I plan to have all of the special needs in a huge universe similar to DC Universe, or Marvel Universe. What is the ultimate goal with TEAM SUPREME? Do you plan on pitching it to any major network? The goal is exactly that, yes. I plan to either make an episode, or an actual short film to enter into film festivals, etc… They usually say that the work of an artist stems from the pain that he has endured, would you say that it is the case for you? I will agree with that statement, as it pertains to myself. I have been through a lot in life, but I just used the setbacks as motivation. Now I have a chip on my shoulder, and I

want to be the best there is, hands down. I’m a perfectionist, and take pride in my work, so I’m ready to continue to make major moves. Looks like you are very involved in your community, can you tell us a bit more about how your work has affected your surroundings? I mentor kids when I can, whether it just be about life, animation, or just meeting with them. The most recent mentor I was blessed with was the S.T.E.A.M CAMP. I spoke in front of 75 kids about diversity, and animation. We all had a blast, and at the end, all of the kids got a personalized Team Supreme poster signed. I was also booked for another speaking engagement in Gainesville, FL, but was unable to make the date because it was too soon.

They say that an artist never has one talent, do you have a hidden talent that you would like to share with us? This is definitely true for me lol I’m an all around artist. I sing, dance, act, (Been in 6 movies, including Taken 3, and Let’s Be Cops), I’m also trained in Boxing, and MMA. In 2005, I was training for the 2008 Olympic Boxing Team, but hurricane Katrina left me homeless, so I was evacuated to Atlanta, GA where I reside now. What are your plans for the near future? My plans for the near future consist of me graduating college in January 2018 with a degree in animation and media arts. I also plan to expand my company Leonard Studios, LLC. I hope to have a team put together to complete the Team Supreme short film, and pitch to the networks. I was recently just nominated for the ‘Neighborhood Impact Awards’, where I will be honored, as Michelle Obama is the Keynote Speaker, so I’m thankful for that opportunity. It’s very humbling. We always like to finish with some words of inspiration for those who look up to you, any advice that you would like to share? Absolutely! Trust me when I tell you, you have to work hard to get what you want in life, and you have to outwork everyone while you do it, just to be noticed. I went from being homeless from hurricane Katrina, to being featured in several magazines, like Vibe magazine, and featured on major sites like Mashable, and Ashton Kutcher’s website ‘Aplus.’ I never gave up, nor did I stop working. Everything is earned, and appreciated in the long run. Remember that we are a walking resume, because people will make judgments off of our appearance, so be the King’s and Queen’s you are so we can shock the world!!! HOW ART HELPED ME BEAT CANCER

ancer has always been a disease that I despised mostly because I had to see my mother go through it. It is also not the first time that the magazine has ever honored a survivor. It is always a great honor to recognize those who deserve it most. Those who fight constantly just to see another day. Such is the story of Pepe De Soto. We first featured Pepe when in our 11th issue, his art, unique as it is, mesmerized us with his work. Today he tells us more about how he overcame the most devastating moment of his life. His thoughts will certainly leave a mark.

C

that my art is an extension of myself. It is a way for me to express things which words could not. My faith and my art have both played pivotal roles in my life. Before my illness, I thought I was close to my faith in God. However, the experience of being sick, in pain, and under a cloud of death, drew me evermore closer. That experience not only intensified my faith, which was the only thing I could hold onto, but it also intensified the passion for my art. In all the confusion and the hurt, one thing was clear: my mission as an artist was not complete.

During my time in the hospital, I found a pivotal human sense stripped from me: my sense "On September 14th of 2016, I saw of taste. Due to the my life change. During a routine medication I was on, checkup about a year earlier, the everything tasted like doctor had told me that I had metal. Therefore, heightened PSA levels; however, I I did not eat, and did not think anything of it. I could not sleep Actually, I thought so little of it due to pain. that it took me about a year later This sense to get the results which would turn of withdmy world upside down. The rawal results were clear: I had cancer. Cancer, a word which most people have learned to loathe, had struck me like a bomb. Artists such as myself are dreamers, free beings who seem to think that anything is possible. But in that moment, for the first time in my seventy-one years on this earth, I saw my dreams under a fatal threat. More so, I saw my art under a fatal threat. As an artist, I feel

62 | CREATIV | Sept - Oct 2017 | www.creativmag.com

triggered in me a flood of creativity, which I cannot explain. I am not sure what to call the state I was in. Some may say I was in an elevated state, where for my spiritual self was perhaps more active than my physical self due to my fasting and lack of sleep

What can you do to manage the side effects of cancer treatment?

Whatever it was, it did not serve to destroy me, but rather to fuel my desire to get better. A frightening thought sometimes lingered in the back of my head in that cold, pale-walled hospital room, “Will people see the art I am imagining? Will I have the chance to communicate this experience visually?” Besides my family, I had a new motivation to get healed: my art. I am glad to say that thanks to God I am healed. I have since returned to my studio and have put these ideas to work, and I must say that I am grateful for the chance to once again communicate through my art. Like me, millions of others go through similar instances, and we all look for a foothold that is familiar. For me, that foothold was my faith and my art. I hope that one day my art can serve to inspire a generation of both artists and cancer survivors with the resounding message that there is hope.

There are five main categories of cancer: * Carcinomas begin in the skin or tissues that line the internal organs. * Sarcomas develop in the bone, cartilage, fat, muscle or other connective tissues. * Leukemia begins in the blood and bone marrow. * Lymphomas start in the immune system. * Central nervous system cancers develop in the brain and spinal cord

It is important to know what we are dealing with when it comes to this monstrous disease. According to Cancercenter.com: Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancer develops when the body’s normal control mechanism stops working. Old cells do not die and instead grow out of control, forming new, abnormal cells. These extra cells may form a mass of tissue, called a tumor. Some cancers, such as leukemia, do not form tumors. What are the most common forms of cancer? Cancer may occur anywhere in the body. FOOD FOR THOUGHT..

Fried Chicken and Sneakers As I learn and educate myself about my culture along with the community I reside in. I try to grasp the understanding of the positives and negatives displayed within the black community. As a group, society does not value us as individuals to take true economic risks. Black people are believed to only be valuable within the entertainment, food, and beauty industry. These are where most investments will take place as it is understood that money will be made regardless; therefore, there is no risk. One day, I was having an open discussion with a group of peers about the ways we could provide for our community. One gentleman stated if he had the opportunity he would open several fried chicken quick stops, check-cashing businesses and a sneaker store. With a look of uncertainty on my face, I thought to myself in that moment, "Is that all we are?" The gentleman thought that money could be made by investing in these types of businesses within the black community. As he puts it "A guaranteed amount of residual income can be made through these types of businesses", so why do we only limit ourselves to these means? Family, we are more than fried chicken and sneakers, more than hair stores and nail salons, more than liquor stores and the everyday corner store. Our communities’ dollars are keeping the U.S. economy alive.

Instead of putting numerous amount of money into other businesses we will never gain generational wealth from; let's change the game and invest that money to better our own community. Now, there is nothing wrong with having these types of businesses in our community but they should not be the only ones representing our us. Take a minute to think, it's rare to see coffee shops, computer cafes, art galleries or bookstores in a predominately black community. These types of businesses can be profitable in our community as well if given a chance. If you are so willing to take a risk to open a liquor store as a new business owner then take the real risk to invest to help broaden the minds of your neighbors. During the time of gentrification, it's time to take our communities back. The money that is currently being used to diminish our communities can be used to reform our them by our own hands and minds. All it takes is a few citizens to change the rhetoric.

Story Telling

W

When asked which flower symbolizes them best, many would select the regal rose, a delicate orchid, or the deliciously-fragrant gardenia. And in the realm of trees, some opt for the mighty sequoia or the graceful weeping willow.

Take a moment to hone in on two unlikely candidates that rival all others: the dandelion and the cereus. A striking quality of the dandelion that many overlook is its resiliency. Avid gardeners are often frustrated at the sight of them, knowing they're in for a challenge when attempting to remove them from what might otherwise be deemed landscaping masterpieces. Why? Because while some are aware of their herbal benefits, many people look down on them as little more than a pesky weed. Instead of relegating dandelions to a lowly position, take a moment to think of what they represent. Despite many of their brethren having been pulled in an effort to clear away unfavorable garden guests, and in spite of the countless fallen soldiers that lay fallen once plucked for removal, dandelions

JUST WON'T QUIT. Their determination to overcome any attempts to stamp them out is nothing short of marvelous. Even its very name denotes strength, hailing from the French "dent de lion" or lion's tooth due to its growth pattern of deeply toothed leaves. In fact, a single dandelion head may contain upwards of 300 ray flowers that appear to be tiny petals. And it has the proud distinction of being the only flower said to represent all three celestial bodies: sun (yellow flower), moon (spherical head with seeds) and stars (dispersing seeds).

The Garden of Life

Poetically, dandelions open each morning to greet the rising sun then close again in the evening for peaceful slumber. While the flowers can reach heights varying from 6-24 inches, one secret of its tenacity lies in its root system which can rove as deep underground as 10-15 feet. Another key to its survival even in harsh conditions is dandelion flowers do not need to be pollinated to form seed, and seeds are often carried far from the original site by wind gusts, nimbly surfing atop gentle zephyrs like miniature parachutes. A striking natural beauty is the cereus, or night-blooming cactus. One variety - the Deer-Horn Cactus, affectionately known as the Arizona Queen of the Night blooms just one midsummer's night (in either June or July) each year then closes again with the arrival of the morning sun. Its flowers can span up to four inches wide and eight inches long with an intoxicating fragrance known by very few given the flower's scarcity. The cactus itself may proudly stand as high as 10 feet tall. An enigma to desert travelers, the cereus is said to resemble little

more than a dead bush most days of the year. Yet for one glorious night annually (some bloom as infrequently as just once every four years), its trumpet-shaped, creamy-white flowers and exquisite scent move all that cross its path to admire it in awe. By some estimates, there may be a single cereus cactus found on an entire acre of desert terrain; however, when in the presence of others, the plants will somehow communicate with one another to ensure they bloom at the same time since pollination is required to form seed. This built in survival mechanism is an undeniable marvel. So what inspirational lessons can we draw from both phenomenal plants? Never allow someone else's opinion of beauty to limit you. Another's inability to appreciate you in all your glory is not fact, merely an opinion. And while all are entitled to have one, some sentiments just aren't worthy of validation.

challenge. Sure, many of life's endeavors do not meet with success on the very first attempt. But if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. History books are full of examples of people that accomplished great feats after multiple failures. And the annals of time whisper the names and untold stories of countless more heroes that may not be known by the masses but were amazing in their own right. Whatever burdens may weigh heavily on your heart and mind, never let them outweigh your determination to keep going. Use your mind's eye to see yourself crossing the finish line though it may yet appear to others to be far off. All things worth having are worth fighting for. And the world has yet to discover just how much fight you have within you. Who knows? You very well may surprise yourself along the way.

The Green Flags

In a world that always teaches us what the red flags are when it comes to dating, it’s refreshing to know that we can finally look for signs that are more positive when we’re not sure if a person should remain in our lives. The positives are what I like to call the green flags in dating. These are signs we can look for to know when someone is right for us. Green flags are positive indicators that lead us in the right direction and seal-the-deal with the one we’re digging. They’re the flags we may miss because we’re so caught up looking for the flags that usually let us down. Because most single daters experience the same ins-and-outs with seeing someone, these green flags can apply to what you may be currently experiencing, or what you can begin looking for as you continue searching for the right partner. Here goes:

That Say Consistency He’s/ She’s the One! This is self explanatory. Any person who genuinely likes you, WILL be consistent in their actions with you. They will text you, call you, go out with you, and keep up patterns that won’t have you questioning their motives or feelings. Sure, sometimes patterns break, and things may go a little off schedule, but for the most part, there’s a straight and narrow path when it comes to consistency with your person of interest. This is the brightest green flag of them all.

They give you advice

They tell you how they feel This too is a big one. A green flag that lets you know the person you’re dating is right for you, is if they let you know how they feel. Letting you know how they feel aren’t just their feelings about you, but feelings about anything important to them. Naturally, when we trust someone, we’re not ashamed or afraid to tell them what’s on our mind. The same applies in dating. When the man/woman you’re dating shares how he/she feels about you, shares their feelings about family, work related affairs or any other important topic, this should tell you that you’re pretty valuable.

Compliments! Compliments! Compliments!

This green flag may sound trivial, but when a man or woman listens to your worries and/or complaints about something going on in your life, and lends their respectful advice, it means they care. It takes no effort to listen to someone carry on about something bothering them. But when your person of interest steps in, shows that they’re invested in your well-being, and they lend neutral advice that shows they understand, it’s a good green flag.

They want to be around you.

This flag can’t be stressed enough. Compliments don’t begin and end with how good you look. Sure, we want to hear those things from the person we’re dating, but compliments stretch as far as things you’ve accomplished at work, the way you handled a tough situation, your reaction to a crisis or any other behaviors that deserve to be acknowledged. (e.g. “I loved how you were able to get the manager to give me a refund. I’m never that fortunate with rude people!”) When someone invests in complimenting you, it means they care about making you feel good. In turn, they enjoy how much you end up complimenting them and adding to their happiness.

Let’s not get this green flag confused with smothering or taking up too much of your personal time. Wanting to be around you is a green flag that the person you’re dating enjoys your company and not just your sex, cooking or money. It takes a lot for two people, with different lives, backgrounds, upbringings, personalities and moods, to want to be around each other and enjoy it! If you find that the man/woman you’re dating enjoys your company, more times than not, this is definitely a “go” in the right direction to them being “the one”.

While we can go on-and-on with other green flags that you can look for while dating, these are the most common and easiest to identify. Men and women come with a host of emotions, experiences, likes, dislikes, and everything else that makes us human. However, when there are visible signs that someone is digging you and actually likes you for who you are, pay close attention. Don’t ignore or take for granted the small things that go a long way. Keep your eye on the green flags, and GO!

Empowerment

Psst! Frustrated? Maybe God's Tryna Tell You

Somethin' Frustration is that kind of experience that all of us will encounter at various stages of our lives. Like the ‘growing pains’ of adolescence, it is inescapable, inevitable and unavoidable. The most common definitions given for the word “frustration” include; a deep chronic sense or state of insecurity and dissatisfaction arising from unresolved problems or unfulfilled needs; a feeling of dissatisfaction, often accompanied by anxiety or depression, resulting from unfulfilled needs or unresolved problems; and, the feeling of being upset or annoyed, especially because of an inability to change or achieve something, and it is the common emotional response to opposition. People tend to respond to frustration in different ways; depending on their level of resilience, the effectiveness of their coping skills and the strength of their support system. Some people might resort to crying constantly, or they might withdraw or insulate themselves from others for indefinite periods. Others might become depressed, suicidal, angry, or combative. Some people, on the other hand, might take on an air of recklessness or indifference; a strong indicator that they may have lost hope and have given up on life altogether. A shift in perspective is of critical importance if you are to effectively manage your emotions, your thought life and your response when frustration comes knocking. The following are a list of process questions you can work through to help you address any level of frustration you might be facing now: 1. What is your understanding of times, seasons and change? 2. How do you normally respond to change? Is your approach progressive? 3. How is purpose tied to frustration? 4. What do you think is the cause of this frustration (think about your perspective versus God’s)? 5. What can you do to shift things in your favor at this point (think deeply)? 6. What role does The Human’s Manual For Living (the Bible) play in your life? 7. Do you believe there is value in cultivating a relationship with your Source and why (or why not)? 8. Assess your environment in relation to the following: * Your potential * Your personal growth * Your support system (relationships) * Distractions

The Truth About Traveling to

MEXICO

...You Can Do It Safely

There have been many recent news reports about Mexico, particularly the allegations of alcohol tampering at all-inclusive resorts in popular destinations such as Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Riviera Maya. While some of these allegations have been proven true, there are still several investigations taking place and alerts being issued by the U.S. State Department. Making a travel choice to Mexico, or any destination for that matter, should be done after careful consideration and research. And the truth about traveling to Mexico is that it can still be done safely.

USE A TRAVEL AGENT The best way to start your vacation planning is by selecting a reputable, accredited, and certified Travel Agent. Their vast resources of suppliers and fellow agents enables them to stay informed of what’s taking place in various destinations along with receiving first-hand reviews about hotels, resorts, cruise ships, and more. They are also the first to receive alerts regarding itinerary changes for flights or tour packages, as well as details related to potential travel hazards.

All-Inclusive Resort vs Cruise Mexico is home to many beautiful resort destinations – Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Oaxaca, Mazatlán, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel are just a few. With the millions of tourists that frequent the region each year, the country has become quite adept at providing accommodations for even the most selective of travelers. All-inclusive resorts offer the opportunity to explore one city while having most of your meals and beverages included in 92 | CREATIV | Sept - Oct 2017 | www.creativmag.com

your trip cost. There are other options available to all-inclusive guests that may include guest passes to sister properties, some shore excursions, and discounts on activities within the local city. Be sure to research whichever resort you choose. Read reviews on Trip Advisor (www. TripAdvisor.com) and look for responses from management, which tells you they are engaging with past guests and keep abreast of any reviews of their property.

Cruising is an ideal way to experience multiple destinations in one region. Using the cruise ship as your floating hotel will enable you to unpack once. Added benefits of cruising are having all meals included (except for a specialty restaurant or two) along with all entertainment. In addition, if you take advantage of beverage packages the cruiseline offers, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, then you don’t have to worry about drinks at a local bar, restaurant, or resort.

Stay Alert No matter where or how you choose to travel it is imperative that you still practice being safe. That means not carrying large amounts of cash or important documents (i.e. passport) while you are out touring or sightseeing. It also includes paying attention to your surroundings and using tour guides, whenever possible, to avoid being taken advantage of by those who are looking to scam tourists. Avoid heavy or over drinking, especially in public places and with people you don’t know, as this invites unwanted attention and opportunists. Only order beverages that you have drank previously. This will enable you to immediately recognize when a drink may have been tampered with. It pays to be a smart traveler, wherever one chooses to travel. Taking the necessary precautions when planning your trip, and staying alert during your trip, will enable you to increase your chances of having a much more safe and enjoyable time.

When Opportunity Knocks, Take A

H

ave you ever gotten that phone call? You know, the one where your friend tells you about a new venture they are embarking on and how much they need you on board to help achieve their goals. A few months ago, I received two of those calls that change the way I think about opportunity and what her knocks really mean. The first call appeared to be great. A good friend, great work ethic and the opportunity revolved around uplifting children. Not all opportunities are the same. However, this one sounded like it was right up my ally. Still, as soon as he told me to think about it I knew that I didn't need to think too hard. The answer was no. What his opportunity needed was my time. Tons of it. Time that would be taken away from the children I really wanted to work with. Children who are emerging artists, writers and entrepreneurs. Accepting any opportunity must include following steadily on the path of your goals set previously before this new presented itself. I can always collaborate with that organization, but not disconnect from my own to help lead another. When opportunity knocks analyze it, be willing to commit the way you say you will (even if you are just deciding to become a volunteer) or just say no.

Leading me to my next opportunity call. The one I did take. It was in travel. To the naked eye working with children and travel are on opposite ends. However, combining the two is one of my major business goals. The problem quickly became clear that I jumped into this travel venture too early. Not only was I not ready to expand, but I did not have the appropriate team around me to allow the opportunity to properly grow. An expensive lesson I had to step away from and revisit when I am truly ready. Time is a major part of any business. Time is also a commodity you can never get back. Being absolutely clear on how an opportunity aligns with your business goals shows that your first priority is the commitment you have towards your dreams becoming real. As for the onlookers? They will have no other choice but to respect that. Cheers...
