Arrrgh You Ready To Run? On behalf of Publix, I’d like to thank you for participating in the 2022 Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic. Since 1978, this important and exciting event has seen more than 846,000 runners cross the finish line. And it’s my wish for 2022 to be just as exciting – inspiring first-time, as well as long-time Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic runners, to participate in an event that has become a cherished Tampa Bay tradition. Through your generosity and participation, you’re inspiring others, and making it possible to support many charitable youth organizations and running programs in the Tampa Bay area. Being involved in the community, supporting youth and encouraging healthy food choices is a priority for Publix – and we continue to take great pride playing a role in your personal healthy lifestyle choices. No matter how far you walk, jog or run during this event, each step you take demonstrates a healthful lifestyle, and our Publix associates, including myself, are cheering you on! Never underestimate how your involvement is a source of motivation for those around you. Thank you again for participating in the 2022 Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic, and for being a role model for others. I wish you great success in all your accomplishments.

THANK YOU

WAYNE PAPY

45 YEARS OF DEDICATION

The Gasparilla Distance Classic Association was organized in late 1977 as a cooperative venture between the City of Tampa and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa. The Classic provided a fundraiser for a local youth-oriented organization and, provided an event that showcased the growing City of Tampa. The first running on Feb. 13, 1978, welcomed 3,500 15K & 5K participants and raised $17,500 for charity.

1978

2022

Today, we honor the gentleman that was instrumental in creating what was then known as the Gasparilla Distance Classic – Wayne C. Papy. Wayne was 33-years old and a young Tampa Parks & Recreation Dept. Employee in 1978. Since 1978, Wayne has been at every running of the race weekend events. In 2005, he retired as Deputy Director of the City of Tampa’s Parks & Recreation Dept. but thankfully, he didn’t retire as the Operations Director of the Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic Race Weekend. The 2022 Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic, it’s 45th Running will be Wayne’s last running. During his time with the organization, $5.9 million has been raised and donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, the Friends of Tampa Recreation and several 501 (c)(3) youth running and high school athletic programs. He has been tireless in his efforts to develop, nurture and provide guidance and leadership to those working beside him. His skills, knowledge, experience, leadership, dedication, wisdom, and kindness have all played a role in getting every participant to their Finish Line. Wayne has given of himself in ways that will forever impact the City of Tampa, Tampa Bay community, GDCA, the Association’s Heritage Charities and Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic Race Weekend Events. 4

Greetings: It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2022 Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic Race Weekend that includes the 45th Running of the Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic 15K and 5K and the 19th Running of the Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon and 8K. These races, and the many events held to coincide with them have become a popular Tampa tradition and the City of Tampa is honored to partner with the Gasparilla Distance Classic Association. We extend a special thank you to the organizers for their hard work in encouraging participation from the entire bay area community, and in ensuring this is once again an exciting experience. This year, the Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic Race Weekend returns to an in-person live Bayshore Boulevard event. Through the efforts of all those involved with this annual weekend, more than $5.9 million has been raised to support various youth organizations in the Tampa Bay area including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, the Friends of Tampa Recreation, local YMCA’s, school programs, and other charitable organizations and service clubs. All of these valuable programs help improve the quality of life for our children and their families, and your support and participation is greatly appreciated. We hope you will have the opportunity to visit the many cultural, historical and entertainment attractions our city has to offer while in Tampa. Whether you take a walk on the exciting Tampa Riverwalk or beautiful Bayshore Boulevard, ride the streetcar to historic Ybor City or see the sites on a water taxi, dine at one of our fine restaurants, or visit our first-class shopping areas, you will find your visit to be an unforgettable experience. Tampa’s heritage and commitment to the arts is evident with visits to the Tampa Bay History Center, the Tampa Museum of Art, Glazer Children’s Museum, Waterworks Park, Perry Harvey, Sr. Park, Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park, and exciting Sparkman Wharf. We are certain you will find your visit to be a memorable experience. Once again, welcome to Tampa. We hope those from out of town will return soon. Sincerely,

Jane Castor

CONGRATULATIONS TO

PEPPERJACK’S Kids

Running Program KIDS Obesity in children and adolescents is a serious issue with many health and social consequences that often continue into adulthood. Children’s lives can be impacted in a fun and enjoyable way by teaching the development of life skills resulting in their living a more healthy, safe and balanced life. In 2022, 300 elementary and middle school-aged kids (4th – 8th Grade) from inner-city and economically challenged neighborhoods throughout the Tampa Bay community are participating in the PEPPERJACK’S Kids Running Program. For six weeks, the kids are taking part in Tampa Parks and Recreation Department Staffed fitness drills and life skills training. Through these drills, the kids are introduced to running as a lifestyle activity and being fit can be fun. The goal for the kids from the beginning…their carrot… if they attend all of the training sessions, attend school on a daily basis (no absences), have a good attitude, are polite, respectful and helpful and work as a team, on Sun. morning, Feb. 27th, they, along with their coaches, chaperones, and volunteers, will be transported to Bayshore Boulevard to run the final two miles of the 2022 Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon. They’ll touch the lives of thousands of Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon runners and walkers as they too, are in the final two miles of their half marathon. The Kids will cheer them on… give high fives and smiles as the participants pass by, and for many, the kids will provide the extra push that will get them to their Finish Line. After making a HUGE Impact on the 2022 Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon Runners & Walkers, the PEPPERJACK’S KIDS WILL experience Bayshore Blvd. and the feeling of crossing the 2022 Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon Finish Line!

Zephyrhills Natural Spring Water will be on-course to greet every 15K, 5K, Half Marathon & 8K registered participant at their respective Zephyrhills Natural Spring Water “Half-Way There” on-course locations.
