The Gasparilla Distance Classic Association is thrilled to welcome you to the 2023 Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic (PGDC) Race Weekend. In 2023, the PGDC Race Weekend Events will bring all of the fun and excitement you’ve come to expect from the Gasparilla Distance Classic Association (GDCA)!

Please remember, the GDCA, established in 1978, is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for non-profit charitable youth organizations and running programs in the Tampa Bay area.

Through the efforts of an all-volunteer and diverse board of directors and organizing committee, the organization’s mission is carried out through the administration of the annual Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic Race Weekend, produced in cooperation with the City of Tampa and, Publix Too Good For Drugs Jr. Gasparilla Distance Classic, presented in partnership with the City of Tampa and C.E. Mendez Foundation.

The Gasparilla Distance Classic Association takes great pride in its mission. Since the first running of the Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic in February 1978, $6.1 million has been donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, The Friends of Tampa Recreation, and youth non-profit and running-related programs throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Thank you to the City of Tampa, Publix Super Markets, C.E. Mendez Foundation, Gasparilla’s event sponsors, volunteers, and each of the 740,000+ participants that since 1978 have crossed the Finish Line!

See your name in the paper! subscribe.tampabay.com BY BOB PUTNAM Times Staff Writer TAMPA — Sprinting down the backstretch in Sunday’s Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic, Scott Fauble was far enough ahead of the men’s half-marathon field to know that first place would belong to him. Upon this discovery, Fauble, 27, extended his arms, emphatically breaking the tape with his elbows as he crossed the finish line in one hour, 5:09 minutes. He continued to pump his fists amid a steady flow of hands patting him on the back. It was a moment of unfiltered joy for a title Fauble finally could embrace. Fauble had finally figured it out. It was there on his face, the jubilation and relief that came with knowing he had learned how to not only compete with the best in the distance world, but surge ahead. “I’ve been so close for a number of times,” said Fauble, who won a race for the first time in four years. “It was nice to finally break the tape instead of watching someone else do it right in front of me.” By Fauble’s account, he has been a runnerup at least five times in his nascent running career. Several factors have caused him to fall short. Sometimes, he unleashed his kick too early. Other times, he did not a cover a move made by an opponent. “I’ve got second enough times there wasn’t really a script to follow,” Fauble said. There were times in his career when it seemed the finish he wanted so badly was locked in a vault and no one would tell him the combination. But the painful memories of races that got away served as a powerful motivators. “As much as it hurts to lose, I’ve also learned how to overcome some of those mistakes and get better,” Fauble said. This was the first time Fauble participated in the Gasparilla Distance Classic, mostly to gear up for the Boston Marathon. The muggy conditions for the 13.2mile race along Bayshore Boulevard also helped Fauble prepare for the kind of weather he could face two months from now in Massachusetts. The temperature at the start of Sunday’s half-marathon was near 70 degrees, a stark contrast to the snowy conditions Fauble left three days ago in Flagstaff, Ariz., where he and Gasparilla half-marathon women’s winner Aliphine Tuliamuk train with Northern Arizona Elite track

Scott Fauble, left, and Aliphine Tuliamuk are often joined at the hip while training with Northern Arizona Elite track club in Flagstaff, Ariz. On Sunday all that time together translates into men’s and women’s half-marathon wins at their first Gasparilla Distance Classic. Tuliamuk, in fact, beats out most of the men’s field with her final time of 1:12:29. BY BOB PUTNAM Times Staff Writer TAMPA — Aliphine Tuliamuk has an enviable social conscience that extends well beyond road races. That benevolence was on display in Sunday’s Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic. After winning the women’s half-marathon in one hour, 12.29 minutes — nearly two minutes ahead of her closest female competitor — Tuliamuk had a medal placed around her neck. It did not stay there for long. Tuliamuk, 29, handed the hardware to a young girl as an inspirational keepsake. “It’s all about giving back,” Tuliamuk said. Tuliamuk also got her bachelor’s degree in public health, becoming the first from her village to graduate from college. The ultimate goal for Tuliamuk is to be a nurse to help out back home. She has put that profession on hold to pursue her career as a distance runner. In 2016, Tuliamuk won three national titles. That same year, she became an American citizen. Currently, Tuliamuk trains in Flagstaff, Ariz., with the same elite team as the men’s half-marathon winner, Scott Fauble. The last time Tuliamuk visited Kenya was two years ago. She plans to go back sometime this year with her boyfriend, Tim Gannon, a physician’s assistant in New Mexico. “There is so much that is needed in my community,” Tuliamuk said. “If the opportunity presents itself, I will help out when

PEPPERJACK’S Kids Running Program

Get Kids Moving And Give Them The Means To Do It!

Obesity in children and adolescents is a serious issue with many health and social consequences that often continue into adulthood.

Children’s lives can be impacted in a fun and enjoyable way by teaching the development of life skills resulting in their living a healthier, safe, and balanced life.

In 2023, 300 elementary and middle school-aged kids (4th thru 8th Grade) from inner-city and economically challenged neighborhoods throughout the Tampa Bay community are taking part in the Pepperjack’s Kids Running Program. For six weeks, the kids will participate in Tampa Parks & Recreation Department Staffed fitness drills and life skills training. Through these drills, the kids are introduced to running as a lifestyle activity and the idea that being fit can be fun.

The goal for the kids from the beginning…their carrot…if they attend all of the training sessions, attend school on a daily basis (no absences), have a good attitude, are polite, respectful, and helpful, and work as a team, on Sunday morning, February 26th, they, along with their coaches, chaperones, and volunteers, will be transported to Bayshore Boulevard to run the final two miles of the 2023 Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon.

Before heading down Bayshore Boulevard, they’ll touch the lives of thousands of Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon runners and walkers as they, too, are in the final two miles of their half marathon. The kids will cheer them on…give high fives as the participants pass by…smile at them, and provide a little energy to get them to their Finish Line.

After making a HUGE impact on the 2023 Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon Runners & Walkers, the Pepperjack’s Kids will experience Bayshore Boulevard and the feeling of crossing the 2023 Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon Finish Line!

An early congratulations to the Pepperjack’s Kids Running Program kids, you’re almost there!!!

Thanks to Cigna, The MEB Foundation, ASICS, Kellogg’s, and Publix Super Markets, each Pepperjack’s Kids Running Program participant will receive an ASICS Pepperjack’s Kids Running Program T-Shirt, ASICS Running Footwear and Gasparilla ‘Pirate’ Themed Running Socks.

The Gasparilla Distance Classic Association administers the Pepperjack’s Kids Running Program in cooperation with the Tampa Parks and Recreation Dept.
