DIO N E VERULAM
DIONE VERULAM Auctions are a moment of drama – the minutes it takes to sell a work of art are the culmination of months of planning and preparation – everything comes together for those few seconds. In her new exhibition Dione Verulam brilliantly captures that special moment which is so full of hope and expectation. She explores the complex interaction between the auctioneer, who needs to command the room, and his audience, with whom he needs to be in tune, empathising with them and feeling their reactions. With her innate understanding of human situations, Dione feels this intense mixture of skill and emotion and expresses it eloquently in this series. Whether to one side or at the centre of the picture, the auctioneer dominates, the conductor of the symphony, an ageless skill that has changed little since ancient times. She explores the different styles of auctioneering, whether stately and calm or energetic with body and arms constantly moving, triumphant and sometimes dejected. All human emotions are contained in this moment of conjunction between seller and buyer, with hopes and disappointments on each side – delighted seller, sad seller, triumphant purchaser, unsuccessful purchaser – all orchestrated by the auctioneer. Line, colour, pattern – collage is an ideal medium for Dione and she is able to exploit its possibilities to the full. Pattern has always been an important part of her work and the subtle imagery of a picture or sculpture within a picture allows her to pay homage to her 20th century heroes, Matisse, Giacometti, Kandinsky, Motherwell … Artists rarely depict the art of looking at pictures but Dione develops this intriguing theme of the picture within a picture. We do not see the reaction but the narrative of the picture tells us – buyers lost in quiet contemplation in front of “That is Strong, Clyfford Still” or the young couple of hopeful buyers in “Potential Buyers Kandinsky”. The Nudes allow Dione to explore further the juxtaposition of line and colour, contrasting blocks of solid colour with bold patterns, while in her collage landscapes she creates a softer painterly harmony reflective of the subjects portrayed. In the Dancers series she experiments further with colour, superimposing randomly placed irregular splashes of bright colour on top of the swirling dancers, so heightening the sense of movement, energy and joy. Dione’s mastery of many different mediums is extraordinary whether it is prints, either collagraph, linocut or reduction linocut, pastels or monoprints to all she brings her skills of observation, extracting the essence and communicating it. All these pictures of whatever type are filled with her wonderful joie de vivre and enthusiasm. The Alphabet series is a wonderful example of this - all the scenes are portrayed with a meticulous eye for detail suffused with great charm and humanity. Adam and Eve
The same is true of the Auction series in which she was able to observe all the intense human reactions surrounding the works of the great 20th century masters that have so inspired her.
