I first visited Galgos del Sol in southern Spain nearly a decade ago, after seeing a poignant photograph of a group of Galgos. These beautiful, noble hunting dogs were all crammed into a small kennel. Prompted to investigate further, I learned their terrible story. Once cherished by Spanish nobility, Galgos are now often cruelly mistreated. At the end of each hunting season, tens of thousands face abandonment, euthanasia, or are left to survive on the streets.
In Spain, dedicated rescue organisations, like Galgos del Sol, founded and run by Tina Wales Solera, work tirelessly to save these
dogs. My visits to the GDS centre have allowed me to sit with them and attempt to capture their elegance and grace through drawing and painting. I fell in love with their beauty and their gentle, trusting natures, despite their mistreatment. They are a joy to draw – like Greyhounds, but stretched in every direction with impossibly long noses, tails and limbs.
This exhibition is a collection of the drawings and paintings from my visits, inspired by these extraordinary animals, celebrating their resilience and spirit.
