ANN SHRAGER

Light pours in through the windows of Ann Shrager’s new studio, elegantly positioned at the end of her garden in Richmond, London. Set apart from the house, the studio fosters creativity over domesticity. Working in oils, thinned with turpentine, Ann captures scenes from her travels to distant lands: women in saris, tea pickers, goatherders and elephants are all brought to life with the artist’s signature charm.

In this solo exhibition – her second with Cricket Fine Art – Ann has also included works inspired by her surroundings. There are canvases depicting rowers on the nearby river and flowers from her garden. Having painted for most of her life, Ann credits her parents for instilling in her a strong sense of aesthetics. Her mother had a natural flair for design whilst her father, a skilled furniture-maker, often made the frames for his daughter’s early works. With this artistic upbringing, we are in safe hands.

Having studied at both the Byam Shaw School of Art (1967-70) and also the Royal Academy Schools (Post-Graduate Diploma 1970-73), Ann Shrager was elected a member of the New English Art Club (NEAC) in 1975. In 2001, she won the NEAC Arts Club Prize, followed by the NEAC Travel Prize in 2003. Her work has been exhibited in numerous mixed and solo exhibitions.
