KATHARINE EDWARDS
Katharine Edwards is a landscape painter working in the UK, Spain and Italy. She studied at St Martin’s School of Art and École des Beaux-Arts, Paris; her work is in private collections in Europe, USA, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.
I bought a painting by Katharine 30 years ago, a large and vibrantly coloured landscape with thick dramatic paint layered over and over and with her signature ‘frame’ in red, white, brown and blue paint. I never thought to ask where the landscape is – it really doesn’t matter – I just love the pattern and the colour. When Katharine showed me her new paintings there is no doubt that some are inspired by her beloved Andalusia but they explore new passions – monumental stone pine trees in Rome and the Mediterranean (and to think, she used to be scared of painting Spanish olive trees, saying she didn’t know what to do with them), soaring birds, huge skies and elegant silhouettes.
I am, as always, struck by how she paints with utter freedom combined with total control. Every inch of canvas reveals another choice – to layer, to leave, to add or remove horizontal and vertical tension, using colour combinations to structure the painting. A hint of mountain, suggestions of heat, a sense of the time of day – always balanced but exciting – to me her pictures fizz with energy. Whenever I look at them, I see something new.
