Shapes and Constellations “In addition to the personality of the bird, finding interesting shapes, is also part of my practice. Whether a bird is at rest or in action its form can be more or less fascinating. Some birds are ‘athletic’ in appearance and others not. Even in flight, certain movements are more absorbing than others and in bird watching, the shape, or silhouette of the bird, is also crucial for identifying it.

My goal is to find interesting and relevant aspects in all my paintings whether the bird is still or moving, single or in a group, with the hope of making it appealing as well as recognizable. The constellation of groups of flying birds becomes the most challenging. First, each bird must ‘work out’ as I am painting it. If one fails, the whole work is lost. Secondly, the different appearances need to harmonize to form an appealing composition in the end. When there are several birds in one painting the tension rises for each completed bird, wondering whether I will be able to finish the painting, or whether I will have to start all over again.” Karl Mårtens 2017
