JULIA CASSELS
Following Julia’s successful exhibition at Cricket Fine Art in 2017, the development of her characteristic style has been remarkable, not least in the accomplished personal depictions of the African wildlife, so close to her heart. This affinity has become all the more apparent in the development of her increasingly sophisticated techniques, as she transitions from the immediacy and spontaneity of water-based paints to the more substantial challenges of painting in oils. The visual fluidity that has in many ways defined her work is now utilised within a far more rigorous medium. In practical terms, this has encouraged her to use a series of thin colour glazes, that are built up in layers on the canvas, punctuated with more distinct and saturated areas of colour, which lend a more concrete identity to her pictures. This fluid approach allows her to retain the trademark spontaneity of her work whilst at the same time exploiting the greater plasticity of the oil itself. Recessional depth has been enhanced to great effect, and encourages forms, tones and colours to dissipate becoming structurally frail as they recede into the distance.

The more intimate portraits of individual animals often demonstrate a singular poignancy, but remain substantial in their presence; whilst the vastness of the African landscape becomes imbued with a gravitas that is particularly apparent in the larger panoramic scenes. For Julia, there is, and always has been a highly charged emotional connection with Africa, and this relationship becomes evermore apparent as her development as an artist achieves increasing maturity. “It’s all about the light … I love watching how the play of light that falls across the back of an elephant produces a myriad of unexpected colours, or can create abstract shapes of light in rippled water. Light effects everything, from wonderful colour and tone to dramatic sharp contrast. It casts beautiful ethereal shadow shapes which float like silk over the ground, yet at the same time exposes exciting jinks of highlight. Now back in England, I have swapped my simple studio in the Zambian bush of an easel beneath a winter thorn tree, for one with four walls and large picture windows and over-looking woods and hills. Although the light maybe different, it plays the same way… and for me, its still all about the light.”
