David Mankin 'Passages'

DAVID MANKIN

The word ‘passage’ anchors the work displayed in this exhibition. It is a capricious word, meaning many things at once: a path, a change, a channel, a collection of words, a happening, a detail. It is as layered as the Cornish landscape that inspires Mankin; as mercurial as the process of painting; as multifaceted as the viewer’s rapport with the finished piece. Mankin walks through the land, collecting visual moments, noticing aesthetic correlations, and allowing the mood of the day to wash over him. To walk in nature is to notice the rhythm of time and season. Each day will bring a change: an extra moment of sunlight, the yellow opening of a gorse bud, the seep of a tide line. All these instances are indicators of passages of time, and it is this constant rhythmic change which charges Mankin’s canvases with movement. This collection of visual encounters and sensory experiences which indicate a passage of natural change, inspires shifting thought patterns. Observers of the landscape, our thoughts change in response to the environment, the weather, the time of year. It is these journeys of thought, often chaotic in the way they fluctuate, which Mankin explores on the canvas: he is exteriorising the internal. The studio space, the blank canvas, and his vacillating thoughts are the spaces where another passage begins: the passage of the painting. Through the process, the painting moves constantly from one state to another, until the final image is clarified. To begin with, Mankin will allow intuitive changes to occur, allowing runnels of paint to provoke

relationships and questions. The dynamic application of materials, the embrace of accident, the transformation of overpainting, the unearthing of the unexpected, move the painting towards the true image Mankin is searching for. The finished painting becomes its own space through which the viewer can journey. The passages of paint, contrasts of colour, textural differences, and mark making all become visual anchors to assist a pathway around the canvas. These compositional punctuations work together with an inescapable emotional response in the viewer, which creates their own passage with the painting. Like the canvas itself, which has moved from one state to another, the viewer is altered by the work. The sense of place, of movement, of colour, of time, kindle the viewer’s own train of thought: a remembered place, a nostalgic moment, an imagined future. David Mankin exhibits his work in galleries throughout the UK and his paintings are held in numerous private and public collections. He was commissioned by English Heritage to create a painting in response to Tintagel Castle for their 2019/20 Membership handbook. An awardwinning film documented the process. A book about his paintings and process ‘David Mankin - Remembering in Paint’ was published in 2021. His unique perspective on the Cornish landscape has enabled him to gain a growing international following and be regarded as one of the most exciting abstract expressionist artists to emerge in recent years. Kate Reeve-Edwards is an author and art writer. Coming from a family of fine artists, she has acquired a distinctive insight, enabling her to analyse, truly inhabit, and interpret the artist’s process. She has written two art books: ‘David Mankin, Remembering in Paint’ (Sansom: 2021) and ‘Painting Abstract Landscapes’ (The Crowood Press: 2021).
