DIONE VERULAM

Throughout my life, I have been lucky to live in four wonderful houses surrounded by beauty. This exhibition features home life, along with views from my current studio. There is also outside life with longhorns, wild flowers, picnics in the woods and skating in winter. Then there are responses to other places: the Dorset coast, Scotland, Mallorca and the Alps. Wherever I go my sketchbook comes too, so you will also see Badminton and Chalke Valley.

I work from watercolour and pen and ink sketches translating them into collage. I paint paper with a variety of paints and printing inks and combine these with marbled paper. Having applied gesso to the boards I start with acrylic paint after which I add the torn and cut papers.

I have long been fascinated by interiors and am now working with figures in an indoor setting; the models are friends and family. My favourite night out is an evening at the opera and, most especially, if it is the complete experience of an opera by Richard Wagner. During lockdown, I explored my visual response to The Ring – some of these works can be found in this show.
