Don’t ask what the work is. Rather, see what the work does.
Eva Hesse, American artistI am delighted to be exhibiting again at Cricket Fine Art. This is my fourth solo show at Cricket and contains a selection of my most recent work on paper and canvas.
As always, my principal interest is the use of colour in painting and the exploration of new combinations of tone and texture that are novel and interesting in their own right. The themes which recur in my work are those which I have been inspired by for many years: vessels and everyday objects, the sea, and the rural landscape of the Dorset countryside where I spend much of my time. I am always excited to realise a visual impact and, as an artist, to progress and challenge myself at every opportunity. The journey is a never-ending one of examination and creative development.
My chief influences are the Colour Field artists of the USA such as Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler and also

Richard Diebenkorn; and the Cornish school centred around St Ives in the last century. The abstract nature of my work invites the viewer to interact with the paintingthe colours, marks, textures, pieces of collage and drawings. I hope the impact is both personal and one which stretches the imagination. I believe there is a ‘conversation’ to be had, a continuous dialogue between the surface of the canvas and what is perceived.
A few years ago, art historian and curator Dr Ian Massey wrote about my work: ‘In considering the full range of the artist’s work, it is the ability to establish such a multiplicity of moods that becomes particularly striking; the orchestration of colour, shape, scale, line, and gesture, in the creation of a body of work that continues to develop to captivating effect.’
