Leading Ladies Luncheon

The 2nd Annual Leading Ladies Scholarship Luncheon was held Thursday, April 13. Humboldt High School’s Thomas Ray Boykin Gymnasium was transformed into a spectacular arena of splendor as attendees gathered at tables adorned with a variety of colorful business and organizational themes.

“Its a scholarship program gifting for high school seniors with scholarship money for college and business and organizations in the community sponsor tables and donate to support the scholarship,” said HHS alum Regina Hunt.

Dr. Mechelle Moragne recently graduated from the National Links Leadership Academy Cohort IV on April 1, 2023 in Washington D.C. The Links Leadership Academy is a six month incubator program with four learning tracks which included the Entrepreneurship Track, Education Track, Non Profit Track and Business Track. Fifty one fellows were selected by application process which included a written essay from over hundreds of applicants from 299 National Link Chapters. The program culminated in a presentation of a capstone project in Washington DC. Dr. Mechelle Moragne was present for the the Links at the U.S. Capitol and then the graduating ceremony in Washington, D.C. On Wednesday, April 12, 3rd graders from Augustine School volunteered at RIFA! They packed Snack Backpacks and prepped the crates of food that will be used to pack more Snack Backpacks in the future. They also brought cards made by Augustine's Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade classes to include in the bags. We're so thankful for your support as we fight hunger in our community!

TWRA WANTS FEEDBACK

The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency wants your feedback about recent changes to fishing regulations. People often complain about things that we have no control over but say nothing when the opportunity is available. Now is the time that TWRA would like for citizens to respond to the fishing regulations and express feelings about recent changes.

For example, there is no limit to the number of poles used but each pole may only have no more than three hooks on it.

There is no limit on catfish under 34 inches but you may only keep one over 34 inches daily. Crappie must be 10 inches with a creel limit of 15 per day. There is no size limit on bass but the creel limit is only 5 per day in any combination of largemouth, spotted or small mouth. There are a few other changes that you may need to read up on before heading out to state lakes.

The Jackson (TN) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated recently awarded five $1000 scholarships to area high school male students during Annual Scholarship Program at St. Paul CME. The selections were based on essay and the community service activities of the young men. These young men also received a medallion and certificate of appreciation for their community service involvement. The name of the scholarship recipents and their high schools are as follows:

When Is It OK To Drop The Ball?

I think it’s O.K. to drop the ball at midnight, on New Years Eve and why not? Every town worth it’s salt has a New Years Eve ball drop. Take note if you are running for mayor- here is a relatively inexpensive and fun way to bring the entire town together at least for one fun night of the year in happy unison. Atlanta drops a peach, Mobile a moon pie, Panama City a beach ball, New Orleans drops a Fleur-de-lis, Nashville a music note. Why not us? Surely we can come up with something. It could be a giant hub, a pair of blue suede shoes, It needs to be something that symbolizes Jackson. Maybe drop burning asphalt into a giant pot hole? Anyway, you get the picture. Imagine people from the city and surrounding area arriving at one focal point to ring in the new year. Food trucks, vendors, bands playing, packed restaurants and shops. Are you an important person that loves to make a speech? Well they are all here to listen - just get to it early before they are all to busy celebrating. Now we’ll have to have a crane or some way to lower something off the top of a building but surely something is available for that. Maybe

WBBJ can do a live broadcast of the evening. For one night of the year we can celebrate together. Out with the old, in with the new! The entire city would count down together, people would hug and kiss at midnight, the crowd sings “Auld Lang Syne” or “I’m going to Jackson” or whatever else and then we all disperse and wake up the next day to a new year.

A ball drop gets positive notice from all around the country. There are other cities that drop a watermelon, a possom, a wrench, sardines, pine cones, maple leafs. Towns in Pennsylvania seem to favor food. Hershey Pa. drops a hersheys kiss, Bethleham Pa. drops a giant Easter peep, Lebanon Pa. a 200 pound stick of bologna. How do I know this? There are photos and articles about it on the internet. It tends to give you a bit of a warm feeling about those places even if you’ve never been there. This could be us as well. What do you think? Don’t drop the ball on this idea and do drop the ball at midnight on New Years Eve this year.

4-H Project CommUNITY Service

So proud of the fourth grade classes and the CommUNITY Service Committee for organizing this project. They collected items for the tornado victims of Mississippi and surrounding areas. This was one meaningful 4-H project.

United Ways First Ladies Luncheon

The First Ladies Luncheon was held at the Jackson fairgrounds Wednesday April from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm

The Women’s Leadership Council was excited to introduce the inaugural First Ladies Luncheon evening affair.

Tables were beautifully decorated and everyone enjoyed an evening celebration of women in the community while

sipping wine and enjoying live entertainment.

Entertainment was provided by the Ballet Arts, the Jackson Arts Council, and the Jackson Symphony.

As a tablescapes event, it was presented by United Way of West Tennessee Women’s Leadership Council.

Participants mingled with friends and enjoyed a lovely evening celebrating the outstanding women in the area.

Bookkeeper Indicted for Theft

Jennifer Foster worked at Oak Grove Elementary School. An investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office has resulted in the indictment of Jennifer Foster, a former bookkeeper at Oak Grove Elementary School in Lewisburg.

Investigators determined that Foster stole $12,325.46 from the school by removing and keeping cash collected for the school’s book fairs, chorus clubs, field trips, and Chromebook insurance payments from students who lost or damaged computers.
