editorial Dear reader, This is Pierre’s. It’s is a one-edition magazine about the city of Utrecht. Pierre’s is here to help you find your way to all sorts of small events, fascinating organizations, bands and people in the city. So whether you’re in for a morning coffee or an unknown punk band - you can use this as your starting point. A main theme in the magazine is a phenomenon

you often see in the city itself: the bike. Not only were two featured
projects
started by rebuilding a bike; the name of

derives from it as well. For those of

Ergens verstopt achter een boerderij in het noorden van Utrecht is de studio van de band Alexi Lalas. Frontman Rinse is vanuit zijn bed zo naar zijn gitaar gerold, net als drummer Wout. Somewhere hidden behind a farmhouse in the north of Utrecht is the studio of the band Alexi Lalas. Frontman Rinse has rolled strait from his bed to his guitar, as did drummer Wout.

Rinse: “Mijn vader is pianist en organist en hij draaide ook altijd veel muziek thuis. Ik heb zelf ook wel eens geprobeerd orgel te spelen, maar echt tot lessen is het nooit gekomen. Wel ben ik op gitaarles gegaan, heb ik een beetje gedrumd en heb ik mezelf piano leren spelen. Toen ontmoette ik Wout. We zijn ons eerste echte bandje begonnen toen we een jaar of twaalf waren. Alleen misten we een bassist, dus toen ging ik bassen, want dat had ik nog niet gedaan. Ik heb

Ik wilde eigenlijk ook al elke pop-ronde waar we speelden een stapel oude tv’s neerzetten, waar je dan beelden ziet van ons en van het publiek. Nu ben ik blij dat we dan niet gedaan hebben, anders zouden we allemaal kreupel zijn. Maar het idee lijkt met nog steeds heel vet.”

Close to the McDonalds, there’s a new Vlakbij de McDonalds is een nieuwe gelegenheid om frietjes te halen: de Frietwinkel. Alleen deze keer is het geen snackbar, maar een ‘winkel met exclusief biologische produten.
I In augustus 2014 hebben Roderick Heijning en Siem van Bruggen de Frietwinkel geopend, maar het begon natuurlijk al ver daarvoor. Roderick heeft in 2012 de eerste Frietfiets gebouwd, samen met zijn schoonvader. Hij was druk bezig met zijn studie en de Frietfiets was nog maar een klein project. Toen hij vervolgens een jaar in de jeugdzorg gewerkt had was de fiets zo erg aangeslagen dat hij zijn baan had opgezegd en fulltime met de Frietfiets aan de slag ging. Dat wilde

He was busy with his studies at the time, so the Frietfiets was not much more than a small project. After he had worked a year in youth care, the bike had become so successful that Roderick decided to quit his job and work on the Frietfiets fulltime. He did not want to do this on his own, however, so he established a company with Siem van Bruggen: Dapp. That doesn’t come from ‘aardappel’ which means potato, but is simply a name that doesn’t have any further meaning.
