The Spanish Classic Sailing Cup D by A.M. Ávila

uring all of next week, the 22nd of July through the 27th, the Spanish Classic Sailing Cup competition will be held at the Puerto Sherry marina in El Puerto de Santa Maria. The event will provide us with an extraordinary opportunity to view, and take pictures of, classic sailing vessels that are rarely ever seen.

This weeklong event will be hosted both by Puerto Sherry and The Isla Ebusitana Foundation. The foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting classic sailing and to maintaining Spanish naval heritage. It plays an active part in the major nautical events hosted in Spain and elsewhere in the Mediterranean. This event is part of the classic yacht circuit that includes ports such as Monaco, Saint Tropez, Palma de Mallorca, Port Mahón, Porto Cervo,Antibes, Porto Rotondo, Cannes, Barcelona, and Cowes. “Classic sailing” recreates the art of sailing and the lifestyle of yachtsmen in the early years of the 20th century. Prestige, elegance, excellence and respect for the sea and one’s rivals are the values that true lovers of this discipline share and hand down from generation to generation. Ship-owners, along with their crew members, compete using period techniques and material. Classic sailing is divided into 3 categories: I. Period Vessels, built before 1950. II. Classic Vessels, built between 1950 and 1975. III. Spirit of Tradition Vessels: modern vessels built strictly in accordance with traditional drawings and designs. Over 30 vessels will take part in this classic yacht regatta, including the four surviving vessels from the what is known as the “15m International” class. Within a span of twenty years, between 1907 and 1917, twenty International Fifteen-Meter Class yachts were built; sixteen of them in Britain. Four of these incredible preFirst World War yachts still race in the Mediterranean today and in 2012 they formed their own class association to set their own rules and ensure fair, exciting and competitive racing. The 15-Meter Class ships now enjoy their own start at the Photo by Leonardobc

major classic regattas and award their own trophy. The yachts race closely under a slightly modified version of the original International Rules, and racing takes place in real time without the need for a handicap system. This allows for highly competitive racing which is more gentlemanly, more fun, less aggressive and certainly less expensive than racing with a modern fleet. These four remaining 15m class ships, which will all be present, are: the Hispania (1909), the Tuiga (1909), the Mariska (1908), and the Lady Anne (1912) Also making an appearance worthy of note will be the Giraldilla (1963), whose first owner was Don Juan de Borbón (former King Juan Carlos I ), the Mallorcan schooner Isla Ebusitana (1856), and the 18th century reproduction Schooner Sadko. The interest in sailing, shared by the royal families of Spain and Monaco, will ensure international media coverage. Furthermore, these events will also attract famous personalities from the worlds of television, culture, and sport. In addition to the regattas, complementary leisure activities will be organized on land. These activities will be inspired in both the tradition and sporting spirit of classic sailing. The Puerto Sherry Classic Week will host a variety of onshore activities: including traditional food and wine tasting, golf and paddle tennis competitions, an exhibition of documents dating from the beginning of the 20th century, cocktail parties, fiestas, exhibitions and gastronomic events. The President of the Isla Ebusitana Foundation has cordially invited everyone to attend the Spanish Classic Sailing Cup competition, with this message: “It is our hope that this magnificent event will transport both the crews and the public back to the golden age of sailing. Moreover, we aim to promote our passion for classic sailing and nautical pursuits among the general public by holding several land-based events for the enjoyment of all visitors. In this idyllic setting we intend to create a unique environment in which the public and racers will promote values like history conservation, and respect for both tradition and teamwork.” For a schedule of events, and more information regarding the Spanish Classic Sailing Cup, go to the following links: www.puertosherry.com and www.semanaclasica. com.
