U.S. Marines attached to Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team (FAST), Company Europe conducted training on military operations along with their counterparts, the British Royal Marines and Spanish marines, as part of the trilateral exercise Lisa Azul. Lisa Azul is a training exercise that promotes partnership and maritime security while improving cultural understanding and awareness between the United States, Spain and Britain. During the two weeks of training, the allies focused on a wide variety of military

lifesaving skills, fast rope and rappelling drills and urban combat and building clearing procedures, culminating in an exercise requiring all units to work together to secure an urban terrain objective. “It’s certainly been an eye-opening experience,” said Capt. John H. Davis, FAST Company Europe’s Alpha 4 Platoon commander. “What this has allowed junior Marines in my platoon to see, is how other countries execute the same basic training packages using different tactics, techniques and procedures. It’s really been an awesome opportunity across

the board.” Davis also said that being exposed to different techniques and tactics helps his Marines to break out of what he termed a “cookie-cutter approach” to tactical problems by absorbing those techniques into their own methods, thereby augmenting their own skill sets. “Training with these British and Spanish marines has been great,” said Lance Cpl. Nathan Molitor, attached to Fast all kind of stayed in our normal groups, but once we all started talking to each other

we come from different places, but we’re pretty much the same. Our tactics are very similar. We’ve gotten along great.” The two weeks of joint, trilateral training helped Marines from all units and all nationalities sharpen skills and build valuable partnerships for the future. “I wish we could get more of this type of training,” said Molitor. “We get to see their input to see how to change some of our procedures and vice versa, and just see how the world really works when we’re all put together. It doesn’t matter where you come from, Marines can train work together.”

nAVstA Housing Water Within Compliance The Coastline Last week i called a town Hall meeting to speak to our family housing residents about the recent water-testing initiatives as

with that testing. First and foremost, i want everyone to know that naval station rota’s water is safe to drink family housing area. public Works personnel performed lead and copper drinking water sampling on housing units the last two weeks of February to verify that lead concentrations were in compliance and within standards. this water quality testing was completed because we discovered that recent work Capt. Greg s. pekari performed by contractors on the CoMnAVACt spain conversions of our duplex housing units (now four-bedroom homes) had utilized solder that contained lead. What is solder? solder is a soft metal compound that comes in the form of a metal wire rolled on a small spool container. it is

the solder does not translate to unacceptable levels of lead in our water. However, as a precautionary measure, we tested 30 additional housing units to ensure there were no potential health risks to our housing residents. the results showed that the water quality for all occupied homes tested met the Final Governing standards for spain and CniC’s instruction (5090.1), which ensures that navy personnel at overseas installations receive the same quality of water as they do in the U.s. As an additional precaution, public Works will complete testing of all remaining occupied, renovated housing units. results will be available in two weeks since the analysis is performed will coordinate with the contractor on the best way to correct the situation, and we’ll communicate that plan to our residents. i want everyone to know that the health and safety of our rota community will always be our number one priority here at nAVstA rota and ensuring that our community has safe and clean drinking water is a big part of that. thank you and have a great week.

march is red cross month By Winnie Boyle AmericAn red cross rotA

President obama proclaimed march as red cross month across the United states. “during american red cross month, we honor those who devote themselves to bringing relief where there is suffering, inspiring hope where there is despair, and healing the wounds of disaster and war,” the proclamation reads. “today, american red cross workers, alongside countless humanitarian organizations and caring volunteers, deliver life-saving assistance in every corner of our nation and all across the globe.” the tradition of proclaiming march as red cross month began with President Franklin d. roosevelt in 1943, and has been continued by every president since. red cross month is observed in dedication to everyone who supports the mission of the red cross. "the american red cross is grateful to people throughout the nation and on our service to the armed Forces (saF) stations for their generosity," said debbie dustman, american red cross rota station manager. thanks to this support, the red cross is able to respond to disasters both large and small in the United states and around the world, provide assistance to members of the military and their families, provide about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply and teach lifesaving skills, said dustman. this year during red cross month, the american red cross is recognizing the country’s everyday heroes who reach out to help their neighbors when they are in need. these are people who help disaster victims get on the road to recovery, give blood to help a hospital patient, brighten the day of an injured service member who is in a hospital far from home, take one of the lifesaving classes and steps forward to assist someone having a heart attack or to save a drowning child, or volunteer within their community. aboard naval station rota the american red cross rota has volunteers donating their time and skills in the hospital, at the dental clinic, at david Glasgow Farragut volunteers in Lajes Field, azores, and in Valencia and morón, spain. “the american red cross rota is grateful for all of our volunteers that donate their time and skills to make our community stronger. We thank you,” said dustman. during red cross month, the american red cross is encouraging everyone to discover their inner hero by giving time to help a neighbor, taking a red cross class

part of the american red cross in rota by working on a preparedness plan for your household so you will be ready for emergencies, taking a lifesaving cPr class or has a diverse number of volunteer positions available to meet your schedule and skill set, whether you want to donate an hour a month or 40 hours a month. stop time so that you can be an everyday hero, too.

"enjoy the taste of eating Right" is the theme for national nutrition Month (nnM) 2014. Consumer research conmain reason why one food is purchased over another. while social, emotional and health factors also play a role, the foods people enjoy are likely the ones they eat most. this year's key messages for nnM focus on how to combine taste and nutrition to create healthy meals that follow the Dietary Guidelines recommendations. the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans focus on balancing calories with physical activity, and encourage Americans to consume more healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood, and to consume less sodium, saturated and trans fats, added

Below are some of the tips that help consumers translate the Dietary Guidelines into their everyday lives: - enjoy your food, but eat less. - Avoid oversized portions. - Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. - Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1 percent) milk. - Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread and frozen meals - and choose the foods with lower numbers. - Drink water instead of sugary drinks. to help you implement healthy shopping into your routine, the Registered Dietitian at naval Hospital Rota will be conducting commissary tours every tuesday at 10 a.m. during the month of March. If you have questions on how to shop healthy for yourself or your family, call Health Promotions at 727-3376 for more information.

With FDNF and additional families, is Navy College going to increase some of their college course offerings?

I hope that we will offer a greater variety of courses, but that will depend on a number of factors. First, all of the military bases in Europe operate education programs under the Tri-Services Postsecondary Education Contract. That means we can only have the four colleges and universities currently in place. The contract also drives the degree programs offered.

of enrollment. The on-base schools are more than happy to put the course on the schedules but do need to meet the minimum enrollment requirements.

DGF Music Teacher Delivers Own Baby at Home By Harlie Walton

DGF StuDent Writer

David Glasgow Farragut (DGF) Rota High school Music Teacher Jason Fox did something unexpected Feb. 1 - he delivered his daughter at home. “when you are actually there you don't really think about it - you just go into the mood of what you need to do to get this done,” said Fox on delivering his daughter. “After I got cleaned up, Laura [Fox] and I were in shock that we just had our baby in our own house. It was a very emotional day for the Fox family.” On Feb. 1, Jason Fox and his wife Laura Fox were at home, when around 11 p.m. Laura Fox called to Jason Fox, saying that she was feeling labor pains. she also told him to call their babysitter. He didn't want to keep their babysitter up all night worrying about when the baby was coming, he said, but Laura Fox told him to call the babysitter anyway because the baby was coming. As he was on the phone, his wife yelled from up in the master bathroom that the baby

was coming. Jason Fox quickly hung up the phone and ran up to help his wife. no more than 5 minutes after her water broke, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Cadence Fox. “After the baby was born I had to clamp and cut the cord, and thanks to some of my college classes I had the

The hospital thought he meant that they were having a baby. He cleared that up, and the hospital asked them to come in so that the staff could check the baby as well as the mother to make sure that everybody was healthy and safe. “while I was running around the house getting everything we needed to go to the hospital, still carrying our baby, the doorbell rang. [Our babysitter] was standing there in shock that I actually had a baby in my arms. I handed Cadence

March 13, 2014 WALKS IN HISTORY: Old Rota in Ships' Log Text by J.A. PIlares

Views of Rota (top) and Fuerte de Santa Catalina -today's Puerto Sherry- (bottom) in 1678 / Photo by Zenner

I

would like to introduce you to some views of Rota. To some old, really old, views of Rota. Many of our readers will surely have seen old photographs of Rota in bars and shops throughout town. It seems to be a common fétiche to decorate places with black-and-white photographs of a small, sleepy, sea-side and white-washed town; with separating it from El Puerto de Santa María. I

cannot help whenever I see one of these images to look and think “Where would my house be on that picture?”, other times I think “How would Rota have evolved without the Base?”. Some of these images show Rota in

Montague was part of Admiral Jeremiah Smith's squadron, which visited Cádiz at the time. These sketches would show the view from, what mariners today call, the “bajo de los Asnos”; a sandbank about a mile south-west

high-raise buildings near La Costilla, others are even earlier. I, however, would like to go even further back in time, before the Base was built, before calle Calvario was laid down.To just after the town grew out of its walls. We are

rock at low tide from la Costilla beach all year round. It is about half a mile from the shore, and many of Rota's boys talk of attempting to swim there and back in the summer. Of course, no-one that I know has even gotten around to doing it! Another image that we can analise is from 1678, of a similar origin and is much more realistic. It is the same view we can enjoy today when we reach Rota by sea if we take the ferry from Cádiz... only that it is 330 years older! The old pier is visible on the left with some small boats, as so are the castle, the church and the old Convent of the Mercedaries; today's Mercado Público. The sketch includes a note

José Antonio Calderón Quijano, as part of his studies on many hours digging through old documents in several archives; amongst these were the What most surprises me about these views is how little Rota's skyline seems to have changed since then! Only the higher buildings near la Costilla beach challenge the towers of the castle or the Torre de la Merced, but if viewed from the approach to Rota's harbour, or from the Picobarro clift they are not so easily seen as they are built on lower ground. Note. Both sketches are to be found in the book “SPECVLVM ROTAE” by Francisco Ponce Cordones, 1980.A great book if you wish to know more about Rota's history.

lamenco is an art form, comprised of Spanish folk music and dance, which originated and is popular in the region of southern Spain known as Andalusia. It includes cante (singing), toque (guitarplaying), baile (dance) and palmas (rythmic handclapping). This art form grew out of Andalusian and Romani music and dance styles. Maria Dolores Orúe Vásquez Story and photo by MC3 (SW) Grant WaMaCk NAVSTA RoTA Public AffAiRS

A native of Jerez de la Frontera, Maria Dolores Orúe Vásquez, also known as Lola, is a common building 1. For the last 30 years, Orúe has been working for the Ministry of Defence. In 1983, she started

and worked there for approximately 29 years. Durworked in the travel section, but also served as the government travel card (GTC) agency program coordinator (APC). where she took over as the administrative assistant. She maintains the budget and serves as admin’s purchase cardholder. Another part of her duties is

where she removes, and/or adds phone lines for both cell phones and landlines. Additionally, she is the building manager and places any work requests for jobs such as painting, carpentry and/or repairs. She also takes care of the G2 website and uploads

a variety of documents such as Naval instructions, the galley menu and the plan of the week. Even though Orúe is still relatively new to the job, she enjoys it thoroughly. “I like everything about my job,” said Orúe. “Working in travel was stressful at times and this is a lot better. Doing the reports, being organized, etc. I worked in the travel section for a long time and this is a good change. This is different and I have the opportunity to learn more things here which is very important to me.” The difference doesn’t lie solely in her job, but the people who surround her as well. “Everyone in admin are good people,” said Orúe. “They’re all fantastic to work with. I was a little anyone, but it’s nice to work here.” “Mrs. Orúe’s exceptional teamwork spirit and dedication to our mission have been critical in our quest to continue to provide the best customer service to all personnel stationed aboard Naval Station Rota,” said Master Chief Yeoman Felix Rivera, NAVSTA Rota’s admin leading master chief. “The attribute, and her contributions to the day-to-day operations in the administration department are unsurpassed.”

Story and photoS by MCSn Edward GuttiErrEz iii NPASE-E

as someone who’s in rota temporarily, I’ve tried to experience as much as possible in my limited time here. I’ve eaten some foods I’d never expected to, rode the train to Seville and visited the cathedral, alcazar and Plaza de España, and recently, I visited cadiz to see los carnavales. Being a native of new Orleans, la., I’ve spent more than a few days and nights attending Mardi Gras, which is most likely the biggest party in america and the best thing for americans to compare to carnival in cadiz. If you’re doing it correctly, Mardi Gras is a far different experience than you’ve probably been lead to believe. If your goal is to get drunk and act irresponsibly it’s easy to do, but the real spending a solid year working on, to the marching bands and the throws; Mardi Gras is an experience unlike any other. carnival in cadiz was different from Mardi Gras, yet remarkably similar. Both events are heavily satirical and take a lot of care to needle cadiz and new Orleans are both relatively old cities. cadiz is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Spain, and one of the oldest in western Europe, while new Orleans is nearly 300 years old, so the celebrations in these cities are something that are very much a part of the fabric of these cities and the regions around them. See "CARNIVAL," page 15

carnival 2014

CARNIVAL, continued from page 14

Both carnivals feature costuming, a variety of food that both parties were very much family affairs, even if cadiz’s carnival may have been a bit more subdued. There were plenty of children at the celebration in cadiz and if you stay away from Bourbon Street, Mardi Gras is remarkably different from what people expect. Since i am here only temporarily, this trip would’ve been totally impossible for me to make without the help of rota’s Morale, Welfare and recreation (MWr) department. The price of a bus ride directly from base to the middle of the party, and a ride back six hours

later was only $25. When you consider the price of a taxi ride to El Puerto de Santa Maria, then a train to cadiz than that. in my opinion, the things offered by rota MWr here are far and away better than those i’ve seen in other areas. at the base where i’m permanently stationed, a lot of people only go see MWr if they want cheap tickets to the amusement park. in March alone, MWr is sponsoring trips to carnival in cadiz, a historical tour of Seville and a hiking trip to El Torreon in Grazalema natural Park. These are the things you should want to do when you’re living in a country with such a rich, storied history. i’ve been pretty lucky to be able to spend the time i’ve had in such an amazing place, and were i permanently stationed here, i’d constantly be looking for ways to immerse myself in this incredible environment and culture. The MWr department here at naval Station rota gives you a great, economical way to do just that. i highly recommend taking advantage of it while you can.
