special treat for cycling enthusiasts: in less than 10 days, the 69th annual Tour of Spain, also known as “La Vuelta” (short for Vuelta a España) will be hosted by the City of Jerez. This is a world-reknown event which will be televised in 178 countries and expects to draw an audience of approximately 2 million viewers. The cycling tour starts on August 23rd from the area known as the Plaza del Mamelon, ending the first stage of this competition at the Gonzalez Hontoria Park, on the Avenida Alcalde Alvaro Domec. It will be a 12.6 kilometer run throughout the City of Jerez. Inspired by the success of the Giro D´Italia and the Tour de France, La Vuelta began in 1935, with 50 participants, in the City of Madrid. Those pioneer cyclists participated in the race using heavy bicycles made of iron while carrying their own patches and tools to handle emergency repairs. The winner of the first race was Gustaaf Deloor of Belgium. That race lasted from April 29th to May 15th, 1935, extended for a total length of 3425 kilometers, and was comprised of fourteen stages (10 of which were more than 250 kilometers apiece). The race was to be an annual event, but was it interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Although it was re-initiated in 1941, it was then interrupted by World War II. Since then, the Vuelta has continued annually ever since 1955. This year, the race is expected to extend for 3181.5 kilometers. Instead of being a continuous and contiguous route, it will be run in 21 different stages, throughout various cities and towns in Spain. It will begin on Saturday, August the 23rd and will end on Sunday, September the 14th, a 23-day period which includes two days of rest. All of the stages are timed from start to finish. After finishing each stage, the riders' times are compounded with their previous stage times. The rider with the lowest aggregate time becomes the leader of the race and gets to wear the Red Jersey, which is the Spanish counterpart to the Yellow

Jersey in the Tour de France. At the same time as the general competitio also other contests held within the Vuelta: f the point classification for the sprinters, th classification for the climbers, combination c for the all-round riders, and the team class the various teams.
