he origin of the horse in Spain dates back to prehistoric times but the exact time has not been precisely determined. Some of the oldest evidence of horses found on the Iberian Peninsula dates back to the Paleolithic era (@ 20,000 to 35,000 B.C). That evidence consists of cave drawings which depict horses as part of early human life. Historical artifacts, found in Spain, indicate that the horse subsequently played an important role in the waging of war. The Carthaginians and the Romans incorporated large numbers of Andalusian horses into their armies due to their strength and endurance. The Andalusian horse was an impressive steed and was a sign of distinction during military campaigns. By recalling Russell Crowe, as Maximus Decimus Meridius atop his spectacular white horse in the movie “The Gladiator,” or Mel Gibson, as William Wallace gallantly riding his mount in the movie “Braveheart,” you can get an accurate image of the beauty of this “war-horse.” During the Middle Ages, the Moors organized their armies to include a light cavalry, which was almost exclusively formed by Andalusian horses. The Moorish invaders admired the virtues of this breed of horse and their great triumph lay in conserving

teristics. This rtant breednt as gifts to major cities

After the expulsion of the Moors from Spain, Andalusian horses were protected from cross - breeding through various government decrees, along with the intervention of religious orders, which protected horses within their monasteries, as was the case of the Carthusian monasteries. From its foundation in the late 1600´s, the Carthusian monks at the Cartuja Monastery, in Jerez de la Frontera, established a breeding stock of horses which eventually would be considered as one of the most celebrated and valued breeding stocks in the world – known as the “Cartujano” (the Carthusian). It is a sub-strain within the Andalusian breed and

is considered by breeders to be the purest strain of the Andalusian. However, the Cartujano strain is still considered to be separate from the main breed. Recently, I had the privilege of accompanying a group of “Sherry Explorers” to “La Yeguada de la Cartuja - Hierro del Bocado.” “Yeguada” literally refers to a “herd of breeding mares” and “Hierro del Bocado” refers to a branding iron which is shaped like a horse“bit” and which is part of the Yeguada´s official logo. The facility is located near the old Carthusian monastery on the outskirts of Jerez. As you would have guessed, their breeding stock of Andalusian horse is what remains of the bloodline that was maintained alive by the Carthusian monks and by subsequent owners. The Yeguada´s main mission is to continue with those same efforts. The key portion of its mission statement clearly states that it exists to maintain the Andalusian horse blood line alive. In addition, it is also dedicated to educating the public about its function and the importance of its main mission. Part of that educational effort includes its guided tours, as well as its educational tours provided to hundreds of school children every year. Our experience was not only a visual delight but a very informative one as well. For that, we have Ms. Patchi Sibajas to thank. She is the Public Relations Director at the Yeguada and she graciously provided our group with a fascinating insight into the focus and function of this unique institution. The visit is well worth it and I highly recommend it. For more information, in English, about the Yeguada de La Cartuja go to www.yeguadacartuja.com or call 956 162 809.
