South of the rugged Gredos Mountains and west of the wind-blown uplands of central Spain lies a lost corner of the Spanish interior. This is the region known as Extremadura. In contrast to what the name suggests, Extremadura has a charming and gently rolling countryside, covered with endless oak groves and bushes, intersected here and there by rocky mountain chains and bordered by extensive grasslands. It is one of nature’s treasure chambers, crammed with rare plants and animals.
