Cost-effective construction through hot dip galvanizing drives a great result At Thornleigh Golf Centre in New South Wales, the use of hot dip galvanizing (HDG) has enabled the combination of modern design and a durable, cost-effective product with proven performance. Compared to any other protective coating for steel, hot dip galvanizing is unmatched in its superior corrosion resistance, strong and tough coating, proven performance, and lifetime cost benefits. It also has very high sustainability credentials, with zinc and steel being 100% recyclable, and is immune from UV damage. Hot dip galvanized steel contains no volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) and does not emit ozone depleting gases, but its strength is its length of protection – with many examples where HDG steel has been in operation for over 70 years.

President’s Foreword
Trevor Evans National President Master Builders Australia
Master Builders National Excellence Awards recognise the finest from the building and construction industry and 2014 is no exception with a showcase of the highest quality achieved by the industry’s best and brightest. Winners of Australia’s most prestigious building industry and construction awards are recognised for projects that are testament to their commitment to excellence. The National Excellence Awards are drawn from the winners of eight preceding state and territory awards making national winners the best of the best who set the benchmark for the industry nationwide. Winning projects exemplify inspiration and adherence to the highest standards, bringing to life the vision of clients. They have conquered challenging locations and conditions, achieved bold and rigorous sustainability and workplace safety targets, built homes for people of all abilities and families of all shapes and sizes and provided lifestyle and liveable housing to fulfil the diverse housing needs of everyday Australians.
Grand visions were also achieved in our built environment with public and private buildings creating more liveable and connected communities. The opportunity to construct something special that will compel admiration and appreciation from generations to come is a powerful motivator of those who enter Master Builders’ National Excellence Awards. It is therefore very pleasing to see so many young people appearing in the 2014 awards, not only in the National Apprentice of the Year and National Young Builder of the Year, but also those who excelled in their contributions to award winning teams that produced other nationally significant projects. They can draw not only on the inspiration of outstanding building and construction projects but on the wealth of knowledge of the national judges who spent countless hours selecting winners from the 5000 best projects built by Master Builders from around Australia whose excellence underpins the calibre of the National Excellence Awards. The quality of this year’s finalists cannot fail to inspire confidence for our clients that Master Builders deliver the highest quality product for the best value.
This year’s winning projects and their fellow national finalists prove that the technical expertise and innovation of Master Builders can overcome the seemingly impossible.

Melbourne Facades Victoria Project Monash University New Horizons Building 82, Clayton The scope of works for the New Horizons building included an extensive use of structural steel to the entire perimeter of the building. The structural steel members were installed within tight tolerances to ensure accurate bracket installation for the faรงade boxes. The faรงade boxes were all manufactured off-site, primarily in two halves for transportation because some were up to 22 metres long. Attached to the top and bottom of the boxes were the sub-framing for the aluminium window system. The Kalzip cladding works to roofing and soffit had to be carried out on site due to the complex geometry of the building.

ADCO Constructions (Vic) Pty Ltd Victoria Project Melton Library & Learning Hub Part of ADCO’s scope for this project was to undertake research and development on all building materials to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Green Building Council materials rating tools. Significant time and resources were allocated to this task and the result is that the Melton Library and Learning Hub is only the second project to be awarded a 5 Star Green Design rating under the new rating system. A 48,000 litre rainwater harvesting tank captures all the rainwater from the building’s roof. Highly efficient fixtures and fittings, and the use of recycled water ensure that reliance on the town’s main water is as low as possible.

Manteena Australian Capital Territory Project Garangula Gallery The Gallery is sited to follow the natural topography of the rural landscape. The building is both beautiful and functional in its scale and form. The stone for the extensive stone walls was excavated on site, as was the earth used in the rammed earth walls. Substantial quantities of recycled timbers from the old Hornibrook bridge in Queensland feature throughout the building. Reworking of the second hand timbers was an arduous task which required patience and technique to achieve the required effect. Extensive use of Corten steel on the external elevations required careful preparation to produce a consistent patina. The completed project is highly detailed and the workmanship is outstanding.

Hindmarsh Construction South Australia Project SA Health and Medical Research Institute The use of ‘Building Information Modeling’ and fully integrated solutions solved many of the problems associated with the complexity of this project. The building is visually spectacular from multiple perspectives. The complexity of the geometric shape in the highly curved areas is increased by the large spans of the atrium voids. The design of the innovative and sophisticated Diagrid façade was inspired by the ‘skin of a pine cone’. The enlarged dam has increased Canberra’s water storage capacity by 35%. The new dam was constructed downstream of the original Cotter Dam and at 87 metres high is the tallest roller compacted concrete dam in Australia. Excavation of the foundations for its abutments required an extensive operation on extremely steep slopes at heights up to 110 meters. Construction of the dam required a high level of planning and implementation of complex logistics. The high-risk nature of the project meant safety was a major consideration and the subject of significant management effort.

CONDABRI AND REEDY CREEK WATER TREATMENT PLANTS: Steel Fabrications Australia Pty Ltd undertook these projects with Leighton Contractors Pty Limited. Our scope was inclusive of in-house shop drawings for structural steel through to the complete installation of all Structural steel, cladding, rainwater products, operable roller shutters and personnel doors. The two structures comprised in excess of 52,000 individual items of steel fabricated into approximately 12,700 completed assemblies for installation – with a nil error rate. To minimise the high risk activity of working at heights the roof steel and associated cladding were pre-assembled into panels at ground level (approx. 30m x 21.5m) and were installed directly onto the columns in a single lift utilising a 550 Tonne crane. This innovative method of installation is reflective of SFA’s Zero Harm Policy commitment and our clients’ commitment to excellence in safety.
THIS PROJECT REQUIRED IN EXCESS OF 45,000 HOURS FOR SFA WITH A NIL LOST TIME INJURIES. Leighton Contractors Pty Limited proved to be a like-minded client, with a high regard for safety, innovation and quality of works. This synergy contributed substantially to the outstanding success of the two projects.

Roof decking breakthrough: Lapped joints on long runs!
Patent Pending. Australian Registered Design 329703.
Stramit FarLap Roof Lap Joint System ®
This innovative system from Stramit Building Products allows deck roofs to be designed to any length without stepped joints or on-site roll-forming. With the Stramit FarLap® jointing system, long roof runs can be broken into shorter sheet lengths, with no need for structural modifications. The Stramit FarLap® joint provides a strong, weather resisting joint between lapped sheets of Stramit Speed Deck Ultra® concealed fixed decking. Shorter sheets means safer work practices, less thermal expansion and contraction, plus lower transport costs and smaller cranes. For further information contact your local Stramit office.

ATS Timber is proud to offer a comprehensive range of Engineered Wood Products which includes: LP™ SolidStart™ LVL Delivering a greater load carrying capacity than traditional softwood timber, LVL provides consistent dimensions, enhanced durability and reduced shrinkage. An improvement over solid timber, LVL minimises problems that naturally occur as traditional timber dries, such as twisting, splitting, checking, bowing and warping. All our LVL has SiteCote as standard, a wax-based coating that helps weather resistance on the job site. LP™ Solidstart I-Joists Straighter and more uniform in strength, stiffness and size than traditional timber, I-Joists are lightweight and available in longer lengths and deeper depths as well. This means that even large floors can be created with fewer pieces, helping to reduce installation and material costs. I-Joists can be cantilevered to accommodate different floor framing details, and are also suitable for roof framing. In fact, they’re ideal for creating popular styles like cathedral ceilings. LP™ Formwork LP™ SolidStart™ Concrete Form Beams. High grade E12 with a wax SiteCote on all six sides for increased moisture protection and longer service life. For easier and safer handling they also come with eased (chamfered) edges. Manufactured from 100% plantation certified natural renewable resources they meet with EWPAA Requirements for EO Emissions class. Australian Engineering certified as suitable for use in all forms of construction in accordance with the Building Code of Australia. Visit our webpage at atstimber.com.au today.
