ToTalsPaN lauNches growTh PlaNs The steel building and shed industry is feeling the positive effects of a buoyant housing market and renewed confidence in the construction sector.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics disclosed in January that new home approvals rose 22.2 per cent last year, an encouraging hint of economic growth ahead. Kerry Edwards, General Manager of Totalspan—Australasia’s leading customised steel building and shed franchise—reveals that the wider construction sector is also feeling the knock-on effect of low interest rates. “Our latest franchise to launch in Townsville has been inundated since opening last November and has had to recruit new staff to keep up with enquiries,” Kerry says. The improved housing data couldn’t come at a better time for Totalspan, which has spent the last few years focusing on the group’s strategic growth plans. Kerry says, “The last three years have been spent finalising our product range, systems and manufacturing process. We’ve been working to prepare the network for rapid expansion and to ensure the correct support systems are in place to add real value to both existing and new franchisees coming on board.” Until recently, all recruitment was effectively on hold. “Support systems and a strong platform for growth have been the real strategy, so we removed ourselves from all recruitment solicitation during this time, including Seek Commercial activity,” Kerry said.

Kerry believes recent activity in Townsville is the tip of the iceberg regarding what is possible in the Australian steel building market. “Unlike our competitors, we are seeing and supporting an increase in what we call Customer Specific Design. This differentiates us, which paired with the success in Townsville, has given us real confidence that we can quickly make an impact. Minmetals Australia Provides Global Procurement Resources and In-depth Market Knowledge for a Secure Future Minmetals Australia delivers full service procurement solutions to Northern Territory Secure Facilities (NTSF) constructed by Sitzler Baulderstone Joint Venture (SBJV). CASE STUDY Minmetals Australia secured Package E, which consisted of the supply of steelwork for 23 buildings and perimeter fences on the NTSF project, 1100mt in total. The Northern Territory Secure Facilities Project located in Darwin encompasses a number of secure facilities that consist of 800 multi classification men’s and women’s prisons, all associated accommodation and industries infrastructure, secure perimeter fencing and other ancillary facilities. Minmetals is uniquely positioned with vast access to first class manufacturing facilities that can ensure quality driven processes integrating cutting edge design, compliance and safety, were able to provide SBJV with competitive rates that were approximately 40% lower than local steel fabricators. In addition to the fabrication and delivery of structural steel, Minmetals were able to draw on excellent resources both locally and internationally whereby a solution was offered to SBJV to modularise the packing of structural steel for ease of construction. There were in excess of 10,000 fabricated pieces that were each coordinated with the construction sequence, significantly reducing time on site. Given the Minmetals Group is one of the world’s largest bulk carriers, established and long term relationships with a number of supply and service partners allow them to pass these advantages on

to clients. Delivering this package of works was no exception and all 10,000 fabricated pieces were delivered within an incredibly tight time frame with less than 0.01% error. Positive feedback was received on site whereby the general consensus was that the quality was superior to locally supplied content. All structural steel was fabricated in China with a complete Quality Management System that included a comprehensive range of QA documents including birth place mill certificates, inspection test plans, welding and dimensional checks which gave SBJV confidence that all steel members were properly documented with full traceability. Samples were taken and independently tested both in China and an NATA accredited laboratory in Australia.
