Importantly, consumers are becoming more discerning in what they’re seeking for their next new home or addition to their existing home – or their new office or other building project. More and more, we are seeing consumers requesting sustainability and energy-efficient features – often driven by potential cost-savings down the track, but more likely because they’re doing their homework, researching what’s available, what will work for them and – in consultation with their selected design professional – coming up with solutions that will meet their requirements, their budget, and their lifestyle moving forward. The internet has had a dramatic role in this, with consumers often doing their research before they approach their chosen designer. Entrusting your confidence in your design professional will pay dividends. Look through these pages at what can be achieved with only a small space but with a savvy designer who knows how best to convert that minimal space to a comfortable, well-balanced, efficient and comfortable abode. Or look at how adding an extension to a pre-loved home to enable a family to expand can be done in such a way that it not only reworks the pre-existing premises, enhancing it to a comfy, improved level, but doing it in such a way that gives the occupants not only their wish-list of creature-comforts, but often a touch of luxury, too. Through the informed design knowledge of professional building designers, you often cannot detect where the pre-existing ends and the new addition begins. Bigger is no longer necessarily better. Modest, small homes are being more and more desired – particularly in innercity locations where space is a premium. Through keeping up to date with changing

technologies and advances in materials and components, savvy designers are able to offer high-quality and efficient solutions for pretty much every conceivable building project, creating buildings that are fit for purpose. Further, the relationship between space and the built form – in a well-balanced, well-thought-out design – can equally contribute to the creation of a memorable, comfortable space. And here’s where a professional interior design can work their magic. By keeping up with trends and material advances, they can inject their interior design influences to reflect the clients’ tastes and aspirations, but delivering them in such a way to ensure comfort and longevity, in a well-balanced and memorable space. This magazine has also matured, in line with the ever-evolving design profession. Awarded is a natural progression from our former publication – Winning Design. It reflects a bold, understated confidence in where we’ve advanced to, and where we’re heading. So, whilst this is the ‘first’ edition of Awarded, it is actually the 11th edition of our annual Awards magazine – also a great milestone. I have been privileged in having compiled and edited the contents of each edition of our Awards magazine. And it’s been a pleasure this year to work with professionals along the way. The Judges have contributed their professional take on the winners’ reviews, injecting their professional comments to the write-ups in these pages. Frame Creative have come up with the graphical concepts and page layouts for this year’s edition. And we’re back with our old friends Crowther Blayne Media Specialists who have not only handled advertising matters, but have also

The rising popularity of DIY and home improvement reality television shows in recent times has led to an even greater desire in finding that perfect ‘fixer-upper’ project that can improve a property’s value and liveability. However, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the hype and completely underestimate the amount of hard work, professional expertise and financial investment required to make that elusive home improvement dream a reality. Apart from New South Wales, there is no legal requirement in Australia to use a registered design professional for any development or home improvement project. As a result, the decision on whether to employ the services of a building designer or an architect is very much one of personal choice. In saying that, for anyone currently contemplating a building project of any kind, I would strongly recommend enlisting the help and expertise of a design professional from the get-go. Be it a building designer or an architect, the value of seeking independent and professional design advice before starting a design project can be immeasurable for those with aspirations of completing a top-of-therange renovation or a new build. So, what’s the difference between a building designer and an architect? As more design professionals have come on board to support the ever expanding construction industry, the line between technician and designer – which was once clearly defined – has become increasingly blurred. Today, it is acknowledged that building designers now carry out the majority of design services in the residential sector and are also actively engaged in the non-residential sector.

41% of BDAV Members are involved in residential sector, while 59% are involved in non-residential or a combination of both. I would also include the stat regarding the number of applications that our members do, as well as the total construction $$ that was outlined in our recent survey. In essence, the practical difference between both professions is minimal. Both building designers and architects possess the relevant expertise to deal with a range of design specifics from heritage issues to environmentally sustainable design, including addressing issues such as energy, water performance and your home’s carbon footprint. They also offer similar services such as design, construction documentation, town planning and contract administration, to mention a few. Such services are provided in all areas of building construction, from residential single dwellings to units and apartments to commercial and industrial projects, including both new construction and renovations and additions. Key differences arise, however, when it comes to the qualification and registration process for both professions, with architects required to meet certain standards in order to legally use the title architect. Similar requirements currently only exist for building designers in Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania. In recent times, observations have been made as to the comparative merits of architects and building designers in terms of good or bad design. However, such criticisms do nothing more than depreciate the design profession and the wider building fraternity in the eyes of consumers. There are excellent building designers just as there are excellent architects, who excel in the design environment.

So who should I hire – an architect or a building designer? Unfortunately, there is no right or wrong answer to this age-old question. Both an architect and a building designer can produce equally spectacular and cost-effective designs depending on specific requirements. As with almost every industry, you ultimately get what you pay for, and highly sought-after design professionals will charge appropriately for their services. My advice? Whether undertaking a residential or non-residential project, firmly and clearly establish your project requirements and parameters. Meticulously check credentials and choose your design professional based on previous expertise, breath of portfolio, qualifications and willingness to be involved in your project. Establish a firm budget and identify who is going to give you the best bang for your buck. Then the hard work begins. We trust that the projects featured in 2016 Awarded provide you with the inspiration and referrals to convert your dreams into a reality.

An unusual orientation of 28oo off north meant a clever response was required to optimise passive solar design for all proposed apartments. Windows are located to make the most of the lovely views of neighbouring parkland and take advantage of the summer shading and wind protection the landscaping provides. Angling the footprint walls allows pockets of vegetation on the site to further complement the established landscaping on adjacent properties. Nestled amongst established trees, the new development has a timeless presence that is responsive to the area and the immediate neighbours. Many aspects of environmental sustainability have been considered including excellent solar access to balconies and living areas in conjunction with internal thermal mass, natural daylighting that penetrates deep within the building, renewable Australian timbers, efficient lighting selection to apartments, sensor activated LED and fluorescent lighting to all public spaces, well insulated building fabric, efficient water saving plumbing fixtures and a 20,000 litre rainwater collection tank. Glazing has been carefully framed and shaded to achieve optimal thermal performance. Sustainability objectives are met with no compromise to the beauty and functionality of the apartments. All thirteen apartments have spacious living spaces and bedrooms with abundant natural light. Public spaces are naturally ventilated undercrofts providing genuine cross ventilation to all apartments. With a STEPS rating of 339.9 and an average NatHERS rating of 8.6 Stars this project is a standout. The Artisan Apartments provide a diversity of dwelling type and size with liveability principles embedded. Universal design principles are evident. A continuous accessible path of travel throughout the building – with consideration for adaptability of each apartment – creates future proofing. Changing requirements of occupants due to aging or disability can be realistically met due to considerable pre-planning undertaken by the building designers. The designers have created apartments with adequate space, thoughtful plan layouts, adequate door widths, threshold-free floor transitions and large bathrooms complete with roll-in shower enclosures to enable cost-efficient modification for enhanced accessibility. This multi-residential exemplar seriously addresses the growing demand for apartments with the amenity of a house. This is a unique and stunningly sculptural home for local empty nesters and young professionals who would otherwise be driven to Melbourne’s fringe. Great attention has been paid to the interstitial spaces. Public circulation spaces are designed to emulate small streets encouraging occupants to linger and interact. Individual entries offer an open air space that provides a nuanced transition from fully public to fully private spaces. Sheltered indoor/outdoor pedestrian links and terraces provide comfortable spaces that encourage neighbourly interaction, making this a friendly and welcoming place to live.

This modest budget make-over of a small cottage for an empty nester completely transforms this inner suburban home into a light-filled and airy modern home. Utilising a robust yet simple palette of finishes with a brave approach to maximising tight spaces, this design achieves a ‘cathedral-like’ openness within a very small footprint. The combination of no-nonsense lime-washed wall and ceiling claddings anchored by the softer and tactile featured archway results in a warm and welcoming, and somewhat whimsical, interior. The home reflects the client’s passion for sustainability, love of nature and Australian materials. It is a brave little building.

The Culvert House Trentham is a fresh approach to a country house utilising iconic built forms. Sited to maximise the outlook and winter solar access, the home demonstrates the essence of passive solar design principles. The design provides the occupants a zero energy and zero water future through low-tech integrated systems, allowing them an uncomplicated lifestyle in a beautiful rural setting. Simple gable forms and the rectilinear plan facilitated an economical build. Externally expressed with elegant and sustainable material selections, the use of spotted gum vertical cladding references the adjacent mature gum trees. This very liveable country home demonstrates an elegant and simple execution of the clients’ requirements, providing them with a beautiful, self-sufficient home on a limited budget.

This striking, modern and stylish new home is an extension, atop the rear component of an original heritage building, formerly a bank. The transition from old to new has been expertly executed. Materiality is the key to the project’s success. The exterior palette of smooth concrete, zinc, original red brick and galvanised steel columns contrasts with the warm timber tones within. Every aspect from entry path, steps, front door, internal stairs, lighting, kitchen, bathrooms and detailed joinery is fully resolved and harmonious. Spotted gum is a key design element. The asymmetric angular lines of this modern beach house is a spacious synthesis of timber, concrete and steel used sensitively and is assertively defined by the black window detailing. A fabulous juxtaposition of cast concrete walls that looks strong yet feel soft when combined with timber panelling and floors that feel bold yet look comfortable. This is a well-resolved design that permeates right through to the interior design and decoration. A stunning three-bedroom home with a thoughtful kitchen design, a spacious gym, supportive storage, inviting living rooms and expansive decking that invites entertaining by the fire-place and pool respectively. Working with a small site of 225sqm – and all the design constraint’s that are inherent with a site of this size – the resulting design outcome for this Upsidedown Laneway house is a remarkable achievement. Planning of the bedroom zones on the ground floor has allowed for the inhabitants to gaze out from the living zones across a generous pergola covered deck and beyond to the surrounding area through expansive north facing glazing. Like any good design outcome, good planning and clever design has turned design constraints into design potential, resulting in an award winning project.

The Burke Road Sun Room ARDENT ARCHITECTS

The application of a rigorous adherence to design principles, aligned with the existing period and features of this home, combined with impeccable craftsmanship throughout this renovation, has resulted in a seamless extension to the rear of this grand period building. The extension combines all the charm of the original period and at the same time is infused with a quality of light and liveability that is more in keeping with current expectations for modern living. The judges were impressed with the apparent effort and subsequent success in fusing this new living area with the existing building and its surrounds, which presents as though it was always part of the house.

The client brief called for a light-filled contemporary Australian home with the essence of Japan. Starting with a dilapidated, dark and spatially deprived cottage on a tight block, this design response excels by providing well-proportioned light-filled spaces with an apparent ease of connectedness with the outdoor environment. The highly resolved and controlled space planning combined with a warm yet varied palette of finishes results in a project that demonstrates the benefits of a vigorous and well considered design response to a set of complex design constraints. This project demonstrates the essence of a well-crafted make-over.

This design is a successful merger of old and new, respecting and enhancing the heritage attributes of a classic interwar residence. It has breathed new life into the many retained original features and integrated them with an elegant and light-filled extension. Sleek sophisticated blending with its surroundings while perfectly framing spectacular views, it is apparent that a lot of thought has gone into this design. The winery serves its purpose of entertaining guests in fine style, and being very site-specific in the way it reacts to its environment with its large polished concrete slab providing northern thermal mass. Entering via a smaller entry, the main room skillion roof opens up to views of the King Valley. It would be an ideal place in which to be entertained. The judges were impressed with the way the walls and windows perfectly framed the views. It aims and succeeds in a design which floats above the winery, exploiting the location for the comfort of all.

A brilliant integration of old with new structure that is creatively articulated. The combination of spotted gum and glass used both practically and aesthetically make this a very liveable home. The ironbark wood applied to floors, walls and cabinetry throughout is warm and textured, making this a comfortable home. The artful use of glass in both slump and blown forms allows light to bathe these interiors while defining the spaces. Chrismont Winery combines a palette of concrete, stone, wood and glass to create a light and inviting contemporary interior. It connects to the landscape with generous windows that frame the views, bringing the outside in, and allows the focus to extend beyond the vineyards. Its stone clad fireplace implies warmth, nurturing and inviting one to linger. The interior materials are a clever play of contrast: the strong chocolate timber cabinetry set with the smooth honey coloured veneer acoustic panels and ceiling linings are well-balanced. The design supports the function of a restaurant, reception venue and cellar door sales without being over scaled. These interiors make visitors feel comfortable, and invite them to relax and indulge.

A well-developed new additional space which does not jar with the existing heritage building. The judges commented on the warmth of the design. Not a clashing modern take on a heritage extension, but one that works in symbiosis with the existing house. There are hidden hints at the present day with items such as high performance windows and hidden laptop power. Colour use was also a winner in this design, with warmth resulting from the bold colour choices. A well thought-out design blending the past with the future use of the house.

This design shows sensitivity to the existing house, reinvigorating its style. Working within Council’s strict heritage guidelines, the key design challenge for the heritage component of this project was the carport. The solution – a stand-alone structure with light, refined steel beam frames – provides strength yet does not overwhelm. Dark colours were selected to blend with features of the original Edwardian home: dark charcoal, white underneath the carport for light and lightness. The newer section has blended well, extending the façade with a more modern steel beam for the carport, giving a hint of the more contemporary extension behind. The project has a wealth of style in its use of materials of different type which are sympathetic to the house as a whole, making this a worthy commendation.

It was gratifying to see how many submissions in this year’s Awards recognised the importance of good energy performance as an integral feature of any building laying claim to design excellence. However, many claims for passive solar design and high insulation levels were not supported by solid evidence such as accredited NatHERS energy ratings. Which is certainly not the case for this worthy winner of the Best Energy Efficient Design in the residential category. In the case of the Artisan Apartments, careful attention to features such as solar access, thermal mass, and orientation have delivered outstanding energy ratings of 8-9 stars for each of the individual apartments. At a time when Melbourne is experiencing a boom in mid-rise apartment developments, Artisan Apartments really does provide an iconic case study of best practice design for energy efficiency.

In its award submission, the Artisan claimed to be ‘designed for the future’ – a claim that the Judging Panel was happy to accept. This project has been recognised as a true exemplar of sustainable medium density living. Truly sustainable design is a challenging exercise, as it actually has many dimensions to address: energy and water efficient performance, prudent material usage and durability, social liveability, even aesthetic attractiveness. The Judges' view was that The Artisan manages to ‘tick all these boxes’ in a convincing and credible manner, through features such as carefully detailed building fabric and internal daylighting; water efficient plumbing fixtures and a 20,000 litre rainwater tank; as well as energy efficient lighting. All of which make the Artisan Apartments a worthy winner of the Best Environmentally Sustainable Residential Design.

The Culvert House was highly commended by the Judging Panel in this category because of the comprehensive and effective steps taken in the design process to address sustainability criteria. At a relatively modest capital cost, the Culvert House demonstrates the leading-edge resource management features that reflect best practice. Energy neutrality and water management self-sufficiency are not only highly appropriate to the Trentham setting of this property, but also point the way ahead for residential buildings in sprawling coastal cities where a large number of Australians live. Local sourcing of building materials is also commendable; and attention to embodied energy is an initiative that is actually well in advance ahead of national building code considerations.

The client brief called for the Winton Wetlands Hub to be environmentally sensitive, technically innovative and socially engaging for the local community. This criteria can actually be read as code for sustainable design in its purest sense. The Judging Panel considered that The Hub does, in fact, respond to the design brief in an effective and credible manner. So its sustainability credentials are beyond question. The inherent connection between The Hub’s comprehensively worked sustainability features and its function as a community resource that is intended to heighten awareness of locals and visiting tourists of the significance of both the surrounding wetlands and the indigenous cultural heritage, was seen as particularly commendable by the Judges.

With a brief to design a new ‘School of Design’ above the existing RMIT building in Cardigan Street, Carlton, Ka Ping’s response was a well thought out and executed design. The scheme clearly demonstrated design concepts whilst following through with a functional and beautiful design for the building, with an exceptionally well executed and captivating set of drawings with digital presentation elements. The Judges congratulate Ka Ping for a well thought-out design solution.

The brief was for a proposed Active Learning Centre at Bendigo TAFE’s Charleston Road campus. Mitchell’s digital presentation offers the client a solid understanding on the concepts of the design before focusing on the function and use of the building. It provides an appreciation of how the materials will work together, as well as how every room will flow into another, and the function of each space. Mitchell’s detail in the lighting, shading, textures and music all added up to an exceptional digital presentation.

The brief was for a proposed office and retail building at 277 Clarendon Street, South Melbourne. Paul’s design responds to the brief very well but it was the clarity, detail and presentation in his working drawings that was outstanding. They can be easily interpreted with clear headings, labelling and methodically placed layouts. The sections and detailed plans demonstrate a high level of understanding in the materials, processes and construction. This award was won by Paul for his substantially detailed set of working drawings.

Brian Morison Award for Most Promising Student 2016 Bin He’s portfolio showed the effort he has put into building design since he commenced studying at Bendigo TAFE. The portfolio illustrated how he worked through a design from early sketches through the detailed documentation whilst also showing a design flair. The finished designs showed him working within parameters of planning, and pushing them into functional design which was able to fully utilise the aspect and site. Teachers report the effort he has given to the course, and also assisting other students through his quick ability with software. It will be great to see where his skills and passion take him in the building design profession.

The strength of this compact bathroom design stems from a strong visual focus on the bath boxed in glass. Black zinc cladding and window frames boldly define the brightly coloured glass, providing quality visual detail that further enhances this bathroom design. The drama is softened by wood wall panelling, garden views and natural light. The cabinetry design and mirror float and – along with the generous use of glass – both create a sense of spaciousness. Clever use of lightweight construction in the context of a heritage extension allowed greater insulation than a usual lightweight build. The judges were looking for something that was different, or trying something not as common in use of lightweight materials. This entry achieved this with well-documented additional thermal break through widening of the external walls. This will lead to a greater comfort level through the use of additional insulation, and make a lightweight build feel solid and strong against the elements. There was also use of additional lightweight materials in the planter design and an external insulation finishing system to the main panels to further improve performance. A good clever use of lightweight material to further improve the quality of this build.

Batman House Sited on an ex-pastoral 1.2 hectare allotment, the rural setting offers magnificent views to Australia’s first ‘cable-stayed’ Batman Bridge. Importantly, its architectural form connects the cues taken from the distinctive landmark Bridge. With meticulous attention to engineering requirements, this project makes exemplary use of the potential of steel construction – structural efficiency, durability and low maintenance – to produce a quite remarkable residential building. The building quite literally treads lightly on the landscape and takes full advantage of its spectacular setting, not to mention incorporating passive energy efficient design principles. The Judging Panel was impressed by the clients’ heartfelt comment that “houses like this don’t happen to people like us”.

Glazing limitations have been pushed beyond the conventional in this project, with glass panels recessed without channels or framing into post formed concrete cross hatch beams. The impact is enhanced with recessed, coloured LED strip lighting creating a stunning effect during the evening. The custom silicon glass panels are rebated into concrete frames using glass sheet sizes much larger than typical installations. This high tech building solution creates a building that is both functional and an abstract object of art â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it is a giant glass box wrapped haphazardly with glowing ribbon. The dramatic effect of the sculptural form makes a bold impression from outside and from within.

Taking It To The Bank The transparency and lighting effects of glass in this home create mood, warmth and interest in every space. Custom-commissioned blown glass pendants by artist Laurel Kohut dot the house, creating moments of colour in an otherwise restrained palette of charcoal, timber and grey. Well shaded north facing sliding glazed panels create interchangeable indoor and outdoor connections in the living area, whilst carefully sized and proportioned windows frame the views and give excellent daylighting. A slumped glass wall separates bathroom and powder rooms, radiating an ephemeral light enhanced by the frameless glass shower and wall-to-wall skylight. Creative use of glass ensures natural light enters internal spaces whilst maintaining privacy. Light pendants, windows, screens, balustrades, mirrors and furniture are all meticulously detailed to create a home with an inner glow.

The extension to the existing red brick 1930s house is a contrasting form that demonstrates how old and new can occupy the same space comfortably. In response to heritage overlay and streetscape restrictions, the distinction between new and old is dramatically defined with contrasting brick colours. The new silver brickwork offers a sense of lightness in contrast to the black timber of the ground floor faĂ§ade. Shadows and splashes of light are formed by the open weave brickwork, and create a dramatic, ephemeral effect within. The ever-changing patterns of sunlight on internal walls and floors add delight to the beautiful white and timber interior spaces.

This elegant extension has utilised timber as a constant throughout, creating internal continuity. The vertical Spotted Gum external cladding extended to soffit linings, crafted timber joinery for window seats, open kitchen shelving, bathroom cabinetry and shelving units of natural oak laminate are all pulled together by the constant of the matte finished Blackbutt timber flooring. Timber use extends to the Japanese-influenced pergola and even to the side and front fences. The overall effect of this play with timber is a warm calm and inviting interior juxtaposed with a robust and honest exterior.

The Jewel of Canterbury The clients wanted to retain the structure and size of their existing building, as no additional rooms were required. The house was originally built in the 1980s and had prominent angular orientations in both plan and elevation, resulting as a very complex and highly articulated design. They asked us to update the home by respectfully preserving the original concept. They also requested a renovation which would give rebirth to their contemporary building by paying heed to the existing fabric through informed reinterpretation. The alteration also had to expose and embrace the indoor/outdoor fusion of spaces. The overall result retains the home’s original characteristics and has seamlessly adapted it to contemporary ideas.

The heritage allotment had to be re-envisaged into an adaptive commercial office space with minimal structural or aesthetic changes to the building’s core elements. The clients’ main objective was to have a flexible, adaptive commercial office space, able to accommodate a single tenant or up to eight individual tenants, in separate office pods. Future-proofing the commercial office development for the long term was paramount to the client, whilst creating an office space that sympathised, respected and conserved the building’s heritage. The commercial office space has been carefully integrated within the existing, focusing at all times on its original heritage characteristics.

The client approached us to conduct feasibility studies for a large vacant site close to Essendon Fields airport. As the area is in high demand for family homes, we provided a higher-density scheme comprising three-bedroom dwellings. The client was eager to produce a mix of single and double-storey homes. The result is a row of seven low-lying split-level dwellings along the eastern side that respond to the sensitive adjoining rear-yard interfaces. A bank of 11 triple-storey terrace-style townhouses along the west have valley views. A simplistic, contemporary architectural language was employed to embrace the repetitive nature of the main elevations. The development is an exemplar of how under-utilised urban land can be positively developed.

We were engaged to design a period-sympathetic sun-room to the back of a house that would function as a family room and living room. The clients wanted a lightfilled room that could be used year-round during the day without artificial lighting. We have created a room with a luxurious, detailed feel of a time gone past, which has discreetly incorporated the latest in energy conserving and passive thermal control technology. The extension creates a bright warm living space that can fulfil a number of uses and entertaining options. The sunroom has a connection to the existing kitchen, meals area as well as the new outdoor entertaining area that presents as though it was always a part of the house.

The owners of this double-fronted 19th-century Victorian cottage chose the property based on its old-world charm, access to local amenities, original period frontage, large formal rooms and rear lane access for parking. Its potential to be renovated and extended to accommodate the needs of their growing family was apparent. The owners desired all the conveniences of a large, light-filled, openplan contemporary home, with separate living areas for parents and children. The resultant refurbishment and alteration has achieved elegance, whilst considering issues of extensions, spatial flexibility and adapting to the new surroundings. There is a clear delineation between the new and old inside with a large concealed sliding wall separating the living areas.

We were asked to design and build a cubby-house to be exhibited and auctioned off for charity at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show 2016. The cubby was to then be relocated to the new owner’s property. It had to adhere to strict design requirements to ensure the structure could be safely transported and relocated without the need for permits. The cubby also had to be durable and robust enough to accommodate children of all ages interacting with it during the garden show, being mindful of fall-prevention and head-entrapment considerations. The result is a unique and playful cubby-house that has become an invaluable resource for children to grow, learn and develop their social skills.

The client required a fully-function, dual-franchise car-dealership on one of Melbourne's busiest roads. It had to achieve brand separation for the franchises while still functioning as one business. It needed to tie into the existing Yarra Honda building developed by the client in 2005, as well as allow the transition of cars into the existing workshop, car storage and used-car display. It also had to accommodate new car deliveries by truck, requiring high clearances and large turning-circles. The existing land was heavily contaminated, and the design needed as little earth removal as possible. The successful new Nissan and Hyundai facility on Hoddle Street presents as a powerful statement for both brands located next to Honda.

With a design that underpins sustainability from conception to construction, the modular form of EcoGrid contributes to reducing wastage in construction and utilises sustainable materials without negative impacts on aesthetics or energy performance. This contemporary, functional, off-the-grid home is a realisation of strategies to utilise space via sustainable design principles, and addresses issues such as energy systems, water management and systems integration for optimal operational performance of the home. Its contemporary form and streamlined layout, combined with a holistic approach to passive solar design and systems integration, contributes to aspirations of sustainability by ensuring thermal comfort all year round for the 8 star rated home.

The clients wanted a house sympathetic to its appealing setting, suitable for their retirement from their dairy-farming career. This simple, comfortable farmhouse draws on the surrounding panoramic farmland scenery. A dominant passage through the centre of the house divides the public and private spaces. Living areas to the north with polished concrete thermal mass provide optimal conditions for passive heating and cooling. Adjustable external blinds and awnings allow for even greater temperature control. Locating bedrooms and bathrooms to the south allows those retreat rooms to remain cooler and conducive to sleep. The interior design maintains a very simple, honest pallet.

BCM Headquarters

The clients wanted four self-contained 5 star apartments on the historicallysignificant Moira Station, sympathetic to the heritage overlay on the existing homestead and outbuildings. Moira Quarters, located at Moira Station, is a significant property culturally-rich in history. The self-contained apartments are a true reflection of Australian design, mimicked from the surrounding existing heritage buildings. Structurally perched atop the Cadell Fault offers breathtaking views of the bushland treetops. The floor-plan arrangement encapsulates the dramatic Australian backdrop, further educating guests of its environment and the station’s history. The large retractable ceiling skylights above the bed, framing the starry night, allows the guest to be further immersed into the Australian outback.

The clients required a dual-purpose sophisticated head-office and practical warehouse that was both elegant and functional. The dual-purpose facility required a functional, flexible work space, with plentiful vehicular access, warehouse storage for machinery and materials, and an interconnected office pavilion – the public face to the business – to reflect BCM’s commitment to quality, craftsmanship, sustainability, honesty and a healthy lifestyle. Spacious, well balanced, finely detailed, bespoke, light-filled and technologically advanced, the new BCM headquarters liberates the notion of a typical warehouse/office with clever exploration of collaborative work spaces, spatial experiences and facilities. It establishes a well-crafted environment that communicates that the company values its employees and the client experience.

The clients were unequivocal that the design must be ‘different to the norm’, contemporary, minimalist with ‘no clutter’, incorporating straight clean lines. They wanted an open-plan four-bedroom home with living spaces, home office and deck that “must” capitalise the view. The design catalyst of the distinctive home is articulated in the innovative architectural form, sophisticated structural resolution and glazed elements that unequivocally achieve the desired avant-garde resolve. The main living volumes visually connect and engage with the magnificent vista and a landmark bridge. These distinguishing design features poetically respond to the clients’ brief and rural context. Environmentally responsive, the design reflects spatial quality and functional spaces.

The clients required a new single-storey family home on a rural parcel of land that encourages outside play for the young family and provides beautiful natural light within the home, as well as considering the family’s future expansion. The resultant design has captured the clients’ brief and hearts – and those of the many people who have visited the home. It is not grand or glamorous; yet it is a true reflection of the family. Great access to natural light and the northern axis results makes this home a great performer in all seasons. Seeing the family live in the Arcadian design allows us to see how perfectly suited the home is to its occupants, and this – for us – is a true reflection of a successful design.

The clients wanted their site subdivided into two lots, with an owner-occupied double-storey dwelling on each lot for both clients. This dual-occupancy development successfully responds to strict council requirements of the Design and Development Overlay Schedule 9 and the Port Fairy Design Guidelines Character Area 3 where heritage qualities are incorporated, viewing through to the river is permitted, and the development is visually subservient to the river and surrounding vegetation. A positive contribution to the prominent historic riverside setting has been achieved. Traditional forms result in a contemporary edge with the inclusion of angled walls and extensive glazing, creating a high-quality design.

This contemporary family home, sited on a unique elevated coastal lot with complex covenant restrictions, adapts to the seasons, and provides a high level of comfort and amenity whilst also having a strong connection to the outdoors. The feature courtyard, central to the design, and the expanses of appropriately-placed glazing and balcony areas, all contribute to the seamless merging of inside and out. The understated built form, which follows the natural fall of the land, and the simple material palette of Corten steel, timber and render further strengthens this connection, taking cues from the textures and colours seen in nature.

Re-Schooled

The clients wanted a contemporary lightfilled and spacious family home taking in views of the adjacent horse racing track. Their inspiration was to be taken from their ‘Endless Summer’ ideal, and their active outdoor lifestyle. The home integrates well within its suburban setting whilst embracing the race-track vistas via the ramped-up portion of home. The sweeping curve creates a sense of drama, and absorbs significant solar gain as well as provides a sheltered outdoor area. The understated, robust material palette of stone and timber suggests a strong sense of longevity. The design solution, with its playful approach, provides the clients with a unique family home, enhancing their active lifestyle and providing a high quality of living.

We were commissioned to renovate an existing old school building to create a spacious light-filled family home whilst retaining the charm and character of the heritage building. Richly steeped in history, the renovation and additions called for a sympathetic approach whilst adding a contemporary edge. The old building now offers the clients a high level of amenity, yet preserves many of its heritage features. The atrium addition to the main building and the separate outbuilding to the rear of the site provides a strong connection to the outdoor areas, and draws the unique landscaped setting indoors. The development and its simple forms, material palette and siting are subtle and complementary, whilst respecting the area’s heritage character.

The brief was to transform a rundown Edwardian, with good ‘bones’ and a worn out 1980s addition into a beautiful and efficient home for an active young family of five to grow up in. Their priority was for a home that is light and comfortable all year round, whilst accommodating all the family’s many activities, yet achieving a sense of connection. The clients are delighted with their new home, describing it as ‘a home of space, light and angles’, and a pleasure to live in. The house maximises the site’s aspect and is significantly more comfortable year round. The house, deck and pool are seamlessly connected, providing a wonderful setting for entertaining and family life.

The client had a dilapidated weatherboard home on a very narrow block which was very run down and dark. They desired a contemporary home that maximised the site, with lots of natural light. Given their cultural Japanese background, they wanted an essence of Japan, but were opposed to a Japanese-style home, preferring something distinctly modern-Australian with a good sense of space. The result seamlessly combines and complements two cultures, by creating a contemporary Australian home with subtle Japanese references. It simultaneously challenges the form of a traditional inner-western suburb weatherboard cottage and the idea of the Japanese courtyard house. Distinctly Australian materials have been used in conjunction with an interior palette referencing Japanese design, perfectly blending both cultures.

The young family purchased a dilapidated Victorian home within a heritage suburb that they loved, wanting to create a distinctly modern home reflecting their modern family lifestyle. It had to promote human interaction and family togetherness, yet retain some private spaces. The new additions, which challenge the form of the traditional inner-west suburban cottage, have been designed to maximise natural light, creating a sense of space and connection with the garden. Previously separate rooms open up into inviting and connected spaces that facilitate their modern family lifestyle. By working with and respecting the existing house, this distinctly modern addition highlights and preserves the historic value of the original home, yet is not overwhelmed by the new form.

No longer are gyms a luxury item for fitness fanatics but, rather, a necessity in our hectic lifestyles. It was essential that the Docklands health club be welcoming, unintimidating and functional for both male and females at different fitness levels. The space has been designed around the centrally-located cardio theatre that overlooks the main stair serving Etihad stadium. The resultant space responds to the environment, welcomes patrons with different fitness levels, ages and genders and, most importantly, is functional and robust. The space does not intimidate or discriminate, but creates an environment that promotes healthy living.

Northcote Solar Home

This compelling proposal for sustainable densification promotes community within a small urban footprint. The multi-residential exemplar, driven by a commitment by the designer to propose a more-sustainable model, and a client keen to deliver exemplary design and sustainability outcomes to foster long-term occupancy, seriously addresses the growing demand for apartments with the amenity of a house. The unique and stunningly sculptural home is ideal for local empty-nesters and young professionals who would otherwise be driven to Melbourne’s fringe. Internally, sheltered indoor/outdoor streets provide comfortable spaces that encourage interaction. Skewing of walls provides all apartments with spacious north-facing living and private balconies. Generous room sizes, great spatial qualities and flexible floor plans are enhanced with carefully-framed views of parkland.

We had to create a comfortable, beautiful home for an empty-nester on a narrow site with a tight budget. A priority was retaining space for a native and permaculture garden for the client – a garden designer. The constraints compelled the design to be efficient and flexible, with a study that could convert to a guest bedroom. The outcome is a beautiful little exemplar of what is possible on a tight site and a tight budget. The compact residence is flooded with light and enriched with layered views, carefully framed to crop out neighbours. It achieves a sense of spatial generosity with vistas of sky and garden. This home reflects the client’s passion for sustainability, love of nature and Australian materials.

The brief was to provide a comfortable, sustainable, passive solar home that allows for a flexible, changing family life. This unique piece of architecture responds to the site and modern lifestyles by creating beautiful spaces that are flexible, naturally lit and ventilated, and connect seamlessly and creatively with the garden. The striking roof forms modulate northern solar gain and enable ‘stack effect’ ventilation to all spaces. The elongated floor-plan with central courtyards enables every room to be connected to outdoor space, while providing natural light and ventilation. Exciting volumes, economical use of space, and energy efficient design all combine to create a comfortable home that meets the changing needs of its occupants, and is a delight to inhabit.

The brief was to design a home of simple and elegant functionality, situated on a corner site that was cleared after the Black Saturday fires in Marysville. Casual and informal living zones were to link to outdoor entertaining alfresco and pool, plus separated sleeping zones for guests. Orientated to capture the northerly aspect and vista of the nearby Cathedral Range and Mt Margaret, the dwelling’s linear form rests modestly in its picturesque locale. It respectfully affords the immediate neighbours to continue to enjoy the valley vista. The house has captured the attention and imagination of the local community as an efficacious contribution to the rebuilding of Marysville and its emerging modern character after the Black Saturday fires.

Two terms were heavily discussed during the first client meeting: ‘old school’ and ‘familiar’. The Royal Stacks brand offers fresh quality burgers for the well-versed burger aficionado. The space had to be warm, comforting and easily accessible for all walks of life. Ultimately the brief was more about evoking a feeling of nostalgia and sense of time. We opted to take the brief literally and transport patrons back to their childhood, to their local corner fish-andchip shop. The owner’s vision was to introduce warmth and nature into an otherwise stark interior. We enhanced their idea and reimagined it into something warmer and exciting. The restaurant now has a look and feel that appears to have been uncovered rather than built.

Having lived on the property for some years, the clients chose to subdivide their land, upgrading to a modern home. A contemporary family home with a large covered outdoor entertainment area was to be built as an owner-builder within a modest budget. Concrete had to feature in the design, as the clients are in the concrete industry. The unassuming street view, made up of a series of cubic forms, is unapologetically minimalist. Beyond the front door, the well-resolved building unfolds. The lightweight materials were so precisely modulated that almost no excess materials needed to be removed from the site. A core philosophy of our clients, this was testament of how sustainable design helps the environmental impact, reducing cost.

Jones Residence

Taking it to the Bank

The brief was to design a high-tech luxury family abode for a young family to see them through many years of practical and functional living. They wanted multiple spacious living zones, plus a ground floor kitchen and living area with a natural open-plan flow. The contemporary result is a balanced fusion between use, form and space. It is highly considerate of its careful selection of material and attention to detail. Thoughtful design and notion of interaction between indoor and outdoor settings has accomplished an innovative, respectful, and highly functional outcome. The contemporary built form manifests a product of change within an ageing streetscape, yet thrives on the fundamentals of casual living for the modern family.

The clients desired a home that would split level up with the slope of the land to capture the best Bay views possible. They wanted a modern style utilising different materials, including a self-contained double-storey space at the home’s rear. The design revolves around the abstract use of angles that suit the natural contours of the site to produce an artistic modern architectural form. The minimalistic use of raw materials for construction heavily emphasises the natural elements of the home. The position of the home on site achieves solar efficiency, and fits comfortably on the contours of the land, giving its occupants and visitors a spectacular vista from every angle, internally and externally.

We had to create a new residence for empty nesters at the rear of an existing caretakers’ residence on the first floor of a large heritage building, formerly a bank. The clients had been visualising their new home for more than ten years, so we had to design something special. It needed to be a mix of home, studio and office, accommodating one bedroom plus study, as well as studio and office spaces downstairs. This involved renovating and extending existing ground level commercial spaces with a new home above. The innovative incorporation of indoor/outdoor spaces, tactile gestures softening the rectilinear form, and supreme liveability all add up to a home the clients will enjoy for the rest of their lives.

The brief was for a functional home designed for large family gatherings, with indoor and outdoor kitchens as the hub, and an uninhibited view to the outdoor pool and entertaining area. The design, which had to complement the surrounding vineyard, incorporates rural living and industry without compromising luxury and lifestyle. The large verandahs and gable entry not only protect the occupants from the prevailing sun, but are also symbolic of surrounding homes. With large gatherings, thought was given not only to the footprint of the house, but also to the U-shaped driveway, making it easier and safer for vehicles to enter and exit the property.

We were asked to design a low maintenance home including good natural light and cross-flow ventilation, taking advantage of the site’s northern aspects. Separate bedroom and living zones were required, with a covered alfresco area and gardens viewable and accessible from all living spaces. A high priority was for the use of sustainable and recycled materials. A large garage accessible from the rear lane, roof space for future solar panels and on-site rainwater storage were desired. A design with its own secluded spaces. The elongated house ensures excellent north solar access to all spaces, creating a very energy-efficient and comfortable home that is surrounded by beautiful natural sustainable materials.

We had to create a unique destination for visitors to the King Valley where the wines and food of Chrismont could be shared with all who visit. A unique 'stand out' design has been achieved that sits within its site as if it is evolving from the slope. Angled masonry walls and floating concrete floors connect the rest of the 'lightweight' structure to the earth. The central portion seems to float above the vineyard and the large vertically clad timber 'wine box' acts as the wine store servicing the cellar door. The internal spaces work perfectly. The clients have doubled wine club membership, tripled cellar-door sales, the restaurant is regularly full, and weddings booked in to the future, making this an unwavering success.

The brief was to re-invent a simple and dated single-storey residence into a contemporary and warm home for its occupants and street. The inefficient and impractical floor plan required amending to improve traffic flows and connection of rooms. An improved connection to the natural landscape and potential northerly views were desired. Restraining from expanding the overall footprint provided the most sensitive and cost effective outcome, while delivering on all of the clients’ spatial and aesthetic requirements. The resultant contemporary form is a dramatic shift from the previous home, and is a highly successful outcome. The carefully resolved floor-plan maximises available northern sunlight, providing an energy-efficient and comfortable home that has revived the clients’ love for their home.

Culvert House Trentham The clients were relocating from one of Melbourne’s first and most iconic sustainable developments (Westwyck) to a new rural life. They desired a contemporary home that reflected an uncomplicated lifestyle. The home had to have an understated depth of character; a space that embraces its inhabitants, that allows the occupants to meditate, socialise, accommodate guests overnight (particularly grandchildren), and engage with the natural environment. Sustainability and energy efficiency were pivotal requirements, to be maximised for the available budget. The resultant design demonstrates an elegant and simple execution of the clients’ principal requirement, resulting in a self-sufficient home on a limited budget. The home achieves its overall and specific design brief in a compact and efficient envelope.

The clients wanted a home with an outlook to the tennis court that made it inclusive to the site. They wanted natural sunlight into the main living spaces, and the children's retreat area was to be part of the general living space, yet somehow separated. The overall feel was to be slightly 'industrial', particularly with interior finishes. The initial impression of the finished house is a bold, contemporary statement; however, the blend of materials and its long, elegant shape allows it to sit in harmony with its beachside environment. Internally the layout, built-in joinery, finish elements and colour palette all come together to create seamless spaces – and the main living areas all look over the tennis court.

The Enterprise

The brief was to renovate and extend a neglected brick and terracotta Art Deco home. It had to include a new kitchen, butler’s pantry, living area, dining area, bathroom, master bedroom, ensuite, home cinema, second living area, a powder room, two bedrooms and two decks. Refined interiors have been carefully detailed throughout the house, creating many quiet moments of delight. Upon initial site inspection, the unloved existing house was painted beige on the outside, and pink on the inside. Key era-specific details were identified, retained and restored. The orange of the existing terracotta was referenced internally through orange spotted gum benchtops to vanities, door pulls, window surrounds and fireplace mantels. Careful detailing has achieved clean lines.

This is an amazing transformation of a derelict dwelling into a contemporary home, for two young developers. It beautifully restores historic architecture while adding contemporary sculpted forms. Despite the minimalist approach, the project never feels ‘cold’ or tight, thanks to carefully considered choice of materials and details, like the veneered upholstered window seat that provides views to the north garden/ green wall, or the concealed water-tank that appears as a planter box, continuing the external built-in seats. Environmental aspects define the project, from clever design, through active systems like solar hot water, to the selection of materials based on their sustainability impact. The clients were thrilled with the result, and the house successfully sold at auction upon completion for over $2.7M.

The brief was to create a functional contemporary floor-plan using the harmonising philosophy of ‘Feng Shui’ suited to entertaining. Styling was aimed to set this house apart from any other house in an estate with contemporary ‘Singapore’ organic fluid styling. An iconic street presence has been achieved utilising the selected materials to maximise fluid articulation, yet not losing any of the home’s generous liveability. The central unroofed reflection pond brings positive energy into the home. The ground floor living areas are positioned to take in the home’s radiating energy. The design assures maximum performance to the residence while not overwhelming it’s relatively small site. The layout ensures a pleasing floor-plan and comfortable home, meeting the family’s needs.

Main Health

The Hub is a tourist destination drawcard for the surrounding wetlands. The building and facilities require sufficient profile to attract visitors by its reputation and image. The multi-purpose building needed to provide for arrival, ticketing, information, staff, café and function facilities for up to 200 people, as well as accommodating five wetlands management staff. The resultant Hub building rises above an ordinary public building to be a showpiece for sustainability in architecture. It combines function, form and sustainability to create a balanced and adventurous building response. The Hub has been a catalyst for the rebuilding of a community previously fractured, which now engages with its environment and recognises the importance of the local indigenous people.

We had a challenging brief to expand and modernise our clients’ heritage-listed Edwardian home, transforming it from poorly functioning and dark into lightfilled contemporary living with seamless indoor/outdoor access. The clients were inspired by Belgian and Dutch contemporary design. They also wanted the side drive and rear garage replaced with a street-facing dual-bay carport – a challenging addition to get through planning in this high-level heritage precinct. The renewed heritage house is now a generous, family home on a single level, with significantly increased amenity, northern solar access and available outdoor space. The enhanced spaces, natural light, connection between indoor and outdoor, and finishes, exude elegance. Architecturally-savvy visitors to the home have concluded that it is a ‘piece of art’.

The brief was to maximise the commercial yield from a site that had previously failed attempts to produce a successful completed outcome, and create an iconic building that could stand the test of time. Main Health represents a unique response creating commercial and architectural success despite the site’s failed history. By taking the approach of ‘less can be more’, the design outcome proved that utilising space economically and efficiently can produce successful results. The built form uses cost-effective commercial materials to create a strong architectural presence and interest, resulting in a more considered rhythmic pattern. By shaping windows and openings, opportunities arose to create architectural and street interest which support the overall story.

The brief was to design a home to accommodate a young and growing family within an urban environment. They desired to maximise the site’s potential views and other opportunities whilst making it flexible to adapt to their family's changing needs over time. A carefully considered response has been achieved to the challenge of re-birthing a poorly renovated and compromised 1930s dwelling into a contemporary Melbourne home. Despite its orientation, the site offered great potential; the challenge was to ‘surgically unpeel’ the badly-built additions to allow for a clean break from the existing heritage house and create new living platforms. The response plays on the idea of a new campervan carefully connected to the existing house.

The brief specified a residence with a minimum of four bedrooms, two bathrooms, separate study, formal living and large open plan living/dining/kitchen area, ideally with floor-to-ceiling glass. Top priority was maximising the internal living space and site orientation to the northerly aspect, plus maximising useable outdoor space and grass area, and ensuring adequate space for an integrated pool and shaded alfresco zone. The resultant design merges the old and the new, respecting and enhancing the heritage attributes of a classic ‘interwar’ residence whilst responding to the client brief. The home has been brought to life in a sleek, sympathetic addition of a chic, contemporary family extension. Costs were minimised by retaining many charming period features in keeping with the area’s character.

Kangaroo Ground Pavilion We were asked to provide a contemporary, minimalist, and moderate-sized residence utilising materials to reflect its surrounds. Importance was placed on simplifying the aesthetics of the built form, yet include elements that would provide visual importance to the facade and to anchor the form to the landscape. The clients desired large areas of glazing within the living areas to capture passive solar capabilities to the north and maximise the views to the south. The resultant design epitomises the positives of careful planning, and challenges the notion of minimising the overuse of glass. The result is a home that combines the flow of indoor/outdoor living seamlessly. The simplistic but contemporary design has achieved a building that offers many sustainable features.

Stirling Theological College

The brief was to design a modern home with a timeless elegance, light-filled, and with a sense of spaciousness and relaxation, whilst focusing on energy efficiency and functionality. A resort-like feel was desired, inviting the outdoors in, yet ensuring the home makes a positive impact on the environment. The result is not only minimalistic in appearance, it is also minimalistic in its ongoing demands. Zero maintenance materials, drought-tolerant garden, and an extremely energy-efficient design combine to capture the essence of a resort; comfort, relaxation, harmony – all while not lifting a finger. The interior design – by White Pebble Interiors – has achieved a feeling of warmth with an eclectic contemporary look. A sense of calm complements the clients’ busy family lifestyle.

The College needed to increase in size to enable more teaching, learning, research, administration and social spaces. Minimal disruption to the school’s operations were essential, and the project had a modest budget. Requirements included flexible classrooms to accommodate 50-100 students; research room for graduate students working in small groups; seminar room for 30 people attached to the library that could also serve as a boardroom or meeting room, and more. The design met the client brief in all respects. It provides improved amenity to both students and staff, in a visually-interesting way. The new work connects well with the existing building, reinforcing the sense of community that is so valued by the College.

The client sought to achieve an economical residential outcome that benefits the community area. This enabled the creation of a calming home environment to be pursued, with environmental sustainability being paramount. From a residential design perspective, this multi-residential building highlights the importance of incorporating urban design, heritage façades and environmental sustainability. The use of natural timber and brick to complement the neighbouring parklands, yet maintain the integrity of the façade, shows the importance of appreciating such design opportunities. A major component of this design was to incorporate the heritage façade of the warehouse. Through the use of different materials and textures, there is a seamless connection between the heritage component and the modern development.

The building – ten two-bedroom apartments and a café – was designed to revitalise and rejuvenate a tired and neglected commercial precinct within a context of surrounding traditional single houses. Our developer client identified the opportunity of the site – once a thriving local precinct – which presented a fabulous opportunity to revitalise the tired street with high quality apartments that would appeal to professionals wishing to go to work by train. It was important that the design referenced both the characteristics of the adjacent commercial and nearby residential buildings. A restrained palette of materials, layered horizontally within a highly articulated form, implies the various uses within the building, making it richly dynamic in a modern vernacular whilst responsive to its surrounding context.

Having bought a lush, semi-rural block in Melbourne’s northeast, our client decided to build their family home. It was to have a strong connection to outdoor living and play areas, promoting a relaxed lifestyle. It was to be modern, sophisticated and minimalist whilst still being warm. Upon visiting the site, the major design concept became opening up the views from within the home to create varied moments looking out onto the property. The living room wall is cranked in plan and the ceiling pitched in order to open up the space both in its width and height towards the garden and sky to the north. An extended eave provides refuge and blocks sun penetration during the height of summer.

The brief was to provide a relaxing and peaceful family home away from the hustle of busy working life. The clients’ priorities included contemporary styling with separate spaces for both kids and parents to retreat, as well as spacious, airy and light filled living and outdoor areas which were both functional and fit for entertaining. The dwelling responds exceptionally to the constraints of both the site and the client brief, whilst respecting the surrounding natural character of the area, providing a striking addition to the streetscape. The potential for excessive daytime noise from the surrounds was carefully thought through, with the placement of utility and smaller rooms creating a buffer to more open living zones.

Hayes Road

Sorrento House 1

Our client bought the rear of a subdivision intending to build an innovative and robust rental property. Our design maximises the footprint on the small alleyway block, yet still provides functional outdoor spaces and on-site car parking. The upstairs open-plan living area connects to a generous balcony, adding valuable outdoor space to the first floor. The large north-facing window and balcony doors provide great solar access in the winter months. The balcony shade structure and lounge room window sun awning are designed to block out direct sun during the summer months. Ground floor bedrooms have direct access to the north-facing ground floor decks. A heated concrete slab provides excellent thermal mass and a constant temperature throughout the year.

The brief was to provide a contemporary, minimalist home for a young family to facilitate a modern and open way of living, yet also cater for and conceal the ‘stuff’ that family life generates. They wanted a guest room and ensuite for friends visiting from the country, two bedrooms and rumpus for their daughters, and a private master bedroom wing with a separate study. The outcome is an innovative spatial design that has changed the way the occupants live. A great many things are concealed by one single material, and form increases the luxurious impression of space. There is a lack of doors throughout most of the home. Void of hallways and clutter, the journey is fluid, and the feel is relaxed.

We were asked to create a traditional beach house with a relaxed holiday feel, as a coastal retreat for a young family from their full-time city residence. They required a master wing with nursery close to their young child, and a guest wing with three bedrooms for friends and family coming to stay. They also wanted a gym and an expansive pool with entertaining deck area. The challenges posed by the site resulted in a unique design solution that questions common perceptions of what a ‘beach house’ should look like. Traditional elements are balanced with unique detailing to re-imagine the traditional beach holiday home. The house demonstrates that modesty and luxury can be reconciled simply through good design.

Palm Court The client requested a new master bedroom and bathroom to make her feel like she was walking into a really nice hotel room when she got home. A bath looking over her verdant garden was desired. Access to natural light and ventilation was a high priority. Stage 2 – involving construction of a garden kitchen – was to be considered as part of Stage 1. The project, while small in scale, is highly resolved. It takes full advantage of its garden aspect in a compact site in a densely-populated area. The material palette is restrained, but speaks to the industrial heritage typically found in this type of building. The finishes are tough but skilfully applied, helping to create a sense of luxury.
