Welcome President’s Foreword

National President Master Builders Australia Master Builders National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards recognise the highest quality achieved by Australia’s finest builders. These pages are full of clever ideas and innovations which will inspire builders and clients alike. The building and construction industry plays a crucial role in the economy as the third largest employer of Australians, creating more than a million jobs and training around 50,000 apprentices each year. Australia is a vast country with diverse climatic conditions and topography which can test even the most experienced builder. Master Builders Australia celebrates this diversity and acknowledges builders from across the nation who have overcome the challenges, strived for perfection and delivered outstanding outcomes for Australians of all ages and the community as a whole. Master Builders National Award winners consistently set new benchmarks in quality. This year has been no exception. The projects highlighted in these pages represent the entire building and construction industry, from small residential renovations undertaken by individual builders to iconic civil and commercial projects. At all levels commitment to excellence is obvious.
With safety always top of mind, Master Builders is grateful to the Federal Safety Commissioner and his office for their continued support of the National Excellence in Workplace Health and Safety Award which recognises builders who are proactive in their approach to the safety of their workers and members of the public. The 2016 National Apprentice of the Year and National Young Builder of the Year were selected from a group of exceptionally skilled finalists. They are ideal role models for future generations of Master Builders — the industry is in good hands. Congratulations to the thousands of members whose pride in their work led them to enter projects in the Awards. Thank you to the State and Territory judges and Master Builders Association staff for the sterling effort they put into their local Awards programs. Their rigorous selection processes guarantee that the finalists at national level are indeed the ‘best of the best’. Thanks also to the National Judging Panel who has the difficult task of selecting national winners from a pool of remarkable projects which are already winners in their own right. We greatly appreciate our National sponsors whose support is vital to the success of Master Builders National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards.

NATHAN A HORE T/A N H HOMES Queensland
The aim was to transform a rundown coastal house into a functional, low maintenance rental property with quality fittings and good street appeal. Concrete stumps were replaced with steel posts, asbestos was removed, all walls were re-sheeted and windows were replaced. The design makes good use of the available floor space by creating a larger more functional kitchen with walk in pantry, a drive-through garage and a downstairs lockable storage area. The addition of a new timber deck has created an outdoor area that is shaded and private.

WINNER NATIONAL ALTERATION/ADDITIONS AWARD – $400,000 TO $650,000
NIXON BUILD PTY LTD T/A NIXON BUILD AND DESIGN Queensland
The original single level home was transported from Charters Towers many years ago, and is now over 100 years old. It had been modified previously to enhance its aesthetic appeal, but the owners wanted additional bedrooms and an open-plan living space. Elevating the home and building in underneath was the most effective option. New steel work under the upper level is completely concealed and a seamless finish between old and new has been achieved. This is an outstanding example of updating and adding space, while maintaining the character of the original home.

WINNER NATIONAL LUXURY ALTERATIONS/ADDITIONS AWARD – $650,000 TO $1 MILLION
CPLUSC ARCHITECTURAL WORKSHOP New South Wales
One of the most striking elements of this stunning transformation is the front spiral staircase. The staircase was welded onsite and recycled timber treads were attached to custom angled steel risers. Vertically hung sliding doors lead into the double height internal courtyard. To ensure the doors were easy to operate, and posed no safety risk, a custom concrete counterweight system was built. The rain chain that passes through this counterweight is one of the many environmentally sustainable features incorporated into this project.
