Welcome President’s Foreword

DAN PERKINS

National President Master Builders Australia Master Builders National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards recognise the highest quality achieved by Australia’s finest builders. These pages are full of clever ideas and innovations which will inspire builders and clients alike. The building and construction industry plays a crucial role in the economy as the third largest employer of Australians, creating more than a million jobs and training around 50,000 apprentices each year. Australia is a vast country with diverse climatic conditions and topography which can test even the most experienced builder. Master Builders Australia celebrates this diversity and acknowledges builders from across the nation who have overcome the challenges, strived for perfection and delivered outstanding outcomes for Australians of all ages and the community as a whole. Master Builders National Award winners consistently set new benchmarks in quality. This year has been no exception. The projects highlighted in these pages represent the entire building and construction industry, from small residential renovations undertaken by individual builders to iconic civil and commercial projects. At all levels commitment to excellence is obvious.

With safety always top of mind, Master Builders is grateful to the Federal Safety Commissioner and his office for their continued support of the National Excellence in Workplace Health and Safety Award which recognises builders who are proactive in their approach to the safety of their workers and members of the public. The 2016 National Apprentice of the Year and National Young Builder of the Year were selected from a group of exceptionally skilled finalists. They are ideal role models for future generations of Master Builders — the industry is in good hands. Congratulations to the thousands of members whose pride in their work led them to enter projects in the Awards. Thank you to the State and Territory judges and Master Builders Association staff for the sterling effort they put into their local Awards programs. Their rigorous selection processes guarantee that the finalists at national level are indeed the ‘best of the best’. Thanks also to the National Judging Panel who has the difficult task of selecting national winners from a pool of remarkable projects which are already winners in their own right. We greatly appreciate our National sponsors whose support is vital to the success of Master Builders National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards.

STEELE ASSOCIATES PTY LTD New South Wales

This three-terrace development seamlessly integrates optimal low energy building design with stylish and comfortable spaces. The striking green roofs that cloak the buildings are just the tip of the iceberg of an environmentally conscious construction. Recycled materials were utilised to reduce waste and offset the need for new materials. Additional insulation, double glazing, skylights, rain water tanks, photovoltaic solar modules, louvres and awnings have all been used to ensure reduced operating costs and lasting environmental benefits.

14 Building Australia 2016 – Award Winning Homes

WINNER NATIONAL ALTERATIONS/ADDITIONS AWARD – UNDER $200,000

LATROBE VALLEY BUILDING SERVICES PTY LTD Victoria

Full of rural charm, this entertaining area has a kitchenette and barbecue. The pizza oven and open fireplace are made from recycled bricks. Industrial pendant lights provide the perfect accessory. Both externally and internally corrugated iron and recycled timber add a rustic finish. WINNER NATIONAL ALTERATIONS/ADDITIONS AWARD – $200,000 TO $400,000

NATHAN A HORE T/A N H HOMES Queensland

The aim was to transform a rundown coastal house into a functional, low maintenance rental property with quality fittings and good street appeal. Concrete stumps were replaced with steel posts, asbestos was removed, all walls were re-sheeted and windows were replaced. The design makes good use of the available floor space by creating a larger more functional kitchen with walk in pantry, a drive-through garage and a downstairs lockable storage area. The addition of a new timber deck has created an outdoor area that is shaded and private.

WINNER NATIONAL ALTERATION/ADDITIONS AWARD – $400,000 TO $650,000

NIXON BUILD PTY LTD T/A NIXON BUILD AND DESIGN Queensland

The original single level home was transported from Charters Towers many years ago, and is now over 100 years old. It had been modified previously to enhance its aesthetic appeal, but the owners wanted additional bedrooms and an open-plan living space. Elevating the home and building in underneath was the most effective option. New steel work under the upper level is completely concealed and a seamless finish between old and new has been achieved. This is an outstanding example of updating and adding space, while maintaining the character of the original home.

WINNER NATIONAL LUXURY ALTERATIONS/ADDITIONS AWARD – $650,000 TO $1 MILLION

CPLUSC ARCHITECTURAL WORKSHOP New South Wales

One of the most striking elements of this stunning transformation is the front spiral staircase. The staircase was welded onsite and recycled timber treads were attached to custom angled steel risers. Vertically hung sliding doors lead into the double height internal courtyard. To ensure the doors were easy to operate, and posed no safety risk, a custom concrete counterweight system was built. The rain chain that passes through this counterweight is one of the many environmentally sustainable features incorporated into this project.

Building Australia 2016 – Award Winning Homes 19

WINNER NATIONAL LUXURY ALTERATIONS/ADDITIONS AWARD – OVER $1 MILLION

This house had good strong bones but had been worn away by time. It was lifted, re-stumped and extended, including the addition of a third level. The house was restored to its former glory with all the detailing of a traditional Queenslander, but with modern trimmings such as a lift. The internal fit-out includes large format tiles, 180mm spotted gum flooring and stairs, as well as decorative cornices. It features rebated handrail lighting, backlighting of stone, and recessed LED lighting. A luxurious transformation, this home is full of character and charm.

The main living area features satin finished timber flooring, a curved plaster ceiling and a curved highlight window. The elegant kitchen is finished with a Caesarstone bench top, and a recycled hardwood servery. The master bedroom was designed as a parents’ retreat with lots of space and a private balcony.

Building Australia 2016 – Award Winning Homes 27

WINNER NATIONAL LUXURY PROJECT HOME – $1 MILLION TO $2 MILLION

OLIVER KELLY CONSTRUCTION Tasmania

The house is set over two levels with a curtain wall and a half-moon external pool and spa area. The external cladding is a combination of limestone; huon pine planks and copper finished compressed sheeting. One of the many features of this home is the elliptical shaped enclosure that appears to be floating. It is surrounded by a glass floor and goes from the ground floor to the roof. The ground and first floors are linked with a floating myrtle staircase suspended from stainless rods.

28 Building Australia 2016 – Award Winning Homes

WINNER NATIONAL LUXURY PROJECT HOME – OVER $2 MILLION

ADRIAN ZORZI Western Australia

The magnificent portico, with its double storey columns and glass arch above the panelled double front doors, provides the perfect introduction to the luxurious interior of this home. The spectacular spiral staircase is a central feature. The curved theme continues throughout the home and is evident in the oval freestanding bath in the ensuite, and even in the rounded edges of the kitchen cabinetry. The rear elevation reveals the true expanse and splendour of this home.

Building Australia 2016 – Award Winning Homes 29

WINNER NATIONAL PROJECT HOME – $500,000 TO $1 MILLION

LARKIN & DROUGHT BUILDERS Victoria

This project involved the construction of a beach house in an idyllic, but high-bushfire-risk area. Consequently, it has been built to exacting bushfire standards. An innovative bushfire sprinkler system that can be remotely activated by mobile phone has also been installed. Double glazed windows have been positioned to allow maximum cross ventilation while disappearing sliding, glazed backsplash panels between the kitchen and scullery, and magnetic invisible door latches, add to the sleek, uncluttered appearance.
