For 140 years, members of Master Builders have built our state’s most distinguished and exemplary structures including landmarks such as the Hotel Windsor, the Melbourne Exhibition buildings and, more recently, the Royal Children’s Hospital and Cancer Centre. For the fifth consecutive year we meet here at the Crown Casino Complex to formally recognize the newest buildings to join them in a distinguished tradition of construction excellence. Over the past 12 months, we have seen Master Builders members from throughout Victoria enter high quality and innovative projects in record numbers. The broad and exceptional construction talent we enjoy this evening is a vivid demonstration of how much our industry contributes to the health of our economy and the quality of life we enjoy in Victoria. Ours is a business with many challenges, and we rise consistently to those challenges with pride and dedication. While every project featured in these pages is victorious in its own way, we select just one for the program’s highest honour, Master Builder of the Year. This year, that honour goes to LendLease for their work on Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena. The Australian Open brings many thousands of tennis fans to the arena, which provides a modern and innovative venue for the enjoyment of sports. What most people don’t know is the remarkable effort it took to build and update this piece of sporting infrastructure. With the arena, LendLease delivered on a project with substantial complications and challenges in construction and programming. A key innovation for this project involved taking a proprietary, cost effective, structural ceiling system used primarily in the preparation and erection of flat portal-frame roofs and applying it instead to a saw-toothed roof with a 29-degree pitch.

The prefabricated approach enabled a completely safe working deck, allowing the roof to be assembled on the ground and lifted into place as part of the overall structural steel module in large prefabricated sections. The new facilities will help ensure Melbourne maintains its mantle as Australia’s sporting and entertainment capital for years to come. We also recognise Nicholson Construction as Regional Master Builder of the Year for their work on the Ballarat Community Health Centre in Lucas, and Melbourne Facades who have again been named Specialist Contractor of the Year. Master Builders could not fully recognise the achievements of our members without experienced and highly qualified judges. We thank them for donating considerable time to the process, and for allowing Master Builders to benefit from their expertise. Master Builders also has the support of many valuable sponsors. Without their help, we would not be able to celebrate the winners in such fine style. We thank them for their ongoing support of excellence in the building and construction industry.

Built PROJECT: H&M, MELBOURNE DESIGNER: DESIGNINC AND H&M WEBSITE: WWW.BUILT.COM.AU

The Melbourne GPO building is heritage-listed on both the State and National registers making it one of Australia’s most important public buildings. The partnership with H&M was critical. The need to maintain a close working relationship was of paramount importance due to the complexities of the process and existing heritage conditions. In this particular fitout the

installation of a “vinyl compass” to the ceiling beneath the clock tower signifies the geographical centre of Melbourne. With heavy emphasis on public protection, the existing canopy was removed and replaced with a new mirror-polished stainless steel canopy with hidden fixings. Floor finishes are made from European oak and imported Italian Carrara marble.

22

The Candowie Reservoir Upgrade project involved nearly doubling the dam’s storage capacity by raising the dam wall and spillway by three metres in order to secure a reliable and affordable water supply for future generations in the Bass area. The embankment upgrade raises the existing crest wall using a combination of pre-cast panels and cast in-situ works

in order to construct the new embankment fill behind the new wall. New permanent anchors were also installed to meet required seismic loads on the increased height of the outlet tower. The spillway and its training walls also required attention. Water levels had to remain high and works were to be undertaken in a live operational environment.

Lloyd Group Pty Ltd PROJECT: MELBOURNE ZOO PREDATOR PRECINCT, PARKVILLE DESIGNER: BRUCE ECHBURG WEBSITE: WWW.LLOYDGROUP.COM.AU

The Predator Precinct is located on the site of the old lions enclosure, which is of historic interest. The intention of the project required rejuvenating the area, whilst keeping a close connection with the previous lion enclosure. There were many challenging aspects of the project, including traffic and pedestrian management being critical, to ensure the project was delivered on time and within appropriate safety measures for the public and staff. A key innovation involved the structural glazing to clear viewing sections of the animal enclosures providing an up close and personal experience with the lions on the other side.

Melbourne Facades PROJECT: EMPORIUM MELBOURNE DESIGNER: BUCAN GROUP AND INHABIT / MELBOURNE FACADES PHOTOGRAPHER: LIAM EDLESTON PHOTOGRAPHY WEBSITE: WWW.MELBOURNEFACADES.COM.AU

The scope of works involved in this high profile project required the expertise of Melbourne Facades to provide a highly glazed feature faรงade incorporating both steel framed and conventional curtain wall, a structural steel bridge line and various internal and external glazing. A steel die-grid was developed which, in addition to maintaining a highly architec-

tural appearance both internally and externally, also served as the structural backbone of the faรงade. As well as new elements, the development is successfully integrated into the existing heritage faรงade, this emphasised the careful workmanship that was needed to protect and preserve the heritage features.

Lloyd Group Pty Ltd PROJECT: CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION, KEYSBOROUGH DESIGNER: MARK MEADON WEBSITE: WWW.LLOYDGROUP.COM.AU

The Resurrection church project is very unique in its inclusion of modern materials, finishes and architectural details, combined with religious themes. A gigantic rammed earth wall wraps around the north and west face to tieback the facility, providing thermal mass for heating in winter and protection of direct sunlight in summer. A structural steel portal frame con-

nects with the rammed earth wall to create a vaulted ceiling racked from the entrance up to a large void over the sanctuary, with a domed skylight for natural light. Given the highly detailed, complex construction methodology to complete some of the building elements, the close coordination of all project stakeholders was critical.

ISIS Group Australia Pty Ltd PROJECT: MITCHAM PRIVATE HOSPITAL EXPANSION, MITCHAM DESIGNER: TEAM 2 ARCHITECTS, ZACK ASHBY PHOTOGRAPHER: CHRIS DAILE, HELL STUDIOS WEBSITE: WWW.ISIS.COM.AU

30

This hospital required the addition of 21 new mental health wards with support areas such as dining, gym, clean utilities, dirty utilities, group room and staff areas. This expansion needed to be achieved whilst increasing the available parking on the already-tight site to meet statutory requirements. A main focus of both the hospital and local authorities

was to limit the amount of disruption to the area caused by the construction works. This was achieved by installing a state-of-the-art modular facility in lieu of using traditional construction, thereby speeding up the construction process while limiting the number of works and material deliveries and storage required on site.

Project Group Construction PROJECT: THE COPPERSMITH HOTEL, SOUTH MELBOURNE DESIGNER: HASSELL, SUSAN STANDRING PHOTOGRAPHER: DIANNA SNAPE PHOTOGRAPHY WEBSITE: WWW.PROJECTGROUP.COM.AU The Coppersmith Hotel was a complex project that saw a new boutique hotel constructed behind a 145-year-old heritage façade. This involved full demolition of the existing structure whilst retaining the south and west elevations, with a steel structure from the ground to roof. The lavish fitout encases a sophisticated restaurant and bar, 15 boutique hotel rooms and a rooftop terrace for bar and hotel guests to appreciate. The design entails extensive bespoke joinery and metalwork items as well as a range of intricate high-end fixtures, fittings and finishes to complete the luxurious design.

This construction dramatically revitalised and expanded the new “fresh food precinct” that encompasses an ALDI store and five additional tenancies inside an extension to the Northland Shopping Centre. The existing car park was demolished to redirect the flow of traffic to the centre, while the current bus interchange was relocated to maximise convenience.

A complete redesign of the development is prevalent to onlookers with the implementation of an aesthetically pleasing composite panel façade. This reconstruction ensured that access to the shopping precinct is far simpler and a heavy flow of pedestrian traffic can now be handled effectively as shoppers’ safety is made a paramount focus.

PROJECT: MOOSE ENTERPRISE, CHELTENHAM DESIGNER: QANSTRUCT PHOTOGRAPHER: REGINA GRANT WEBSITE: WWW.QANSTRUCT.COM.AU

Moose Enterprise had a vision for an office that reflected innovation and fun; therefore, the architectural response is playful and creative. Moving through the interior, there is an important connectivity between the levels via the central void. Staff will be delighted with the sharing, communal atmosphere of the lunchroom. An industrial aesthetic complements the free form of the architecture in the expression

of building services and the creation of lofty spaces between “floating” ceiling elements. Creating a healthy work environment was fundamental, so a provision prior to the construction was an abundance of natural light, which is why a bocce and basketball half court were built. This construction boasts a richly- coloured exterior with internal practicality.

PROJECT: TRAINING CENTRE EXPANSION, BRUNSWICK DESIGNER: FMSA PTY LTD, PETER SANDOW PHOTOGRAPHER: GEORGE HAIG, G.H.P IMAGES WEBSITE: WWW.EXEMPLARCOMM.COM.AU

The purpose of this development was to connect by walkways newly-upgraded industry training areas to an existing elevator, so that the currently-employed disabled trainers and also disabled students could access the extensive mezzanine training areas of previous stages. Another goal of the project was to add three new classrooms to the centre without compromising the function of any of the existing ground floor training and assembly areas. The erection of a minimal quantity of very substantial steel members to create mezzanine classroom areas, loading areas and connecting walkways achieved this.

The scope of works consists of replacing two large 1970s-era barrel vaults which have significant structural and waterproofing issues. Works commenced with the development of a methodology to minimise the impact on the centre, ensuring public safety and maintaining trade sightlines. Existing skylights were removed and new high-performance skylights were installed to strict specifications. To ensure the quality of all products, strict quality assurance reviews on all materials, both off-site and on-site with regular checking and defect rectification, were carried out.

PROJECT: CAMBERWELL GRAMMAR SCHOOL NEW SPORTS CENTRE, CANTERBURY DESIGNER: PETER CRONE PTY LTD PHOTOGRAPHER: SARAH LOUISE PHOTOGRAPHY WEBSITE: WWW.COCKRAM.COM

The new Waurn Ponds Railway Station project consists of a new station building, station platform with shelters, 290-space car park, secure bicycle storage, associated infrastructure, landscaping and wetlands works. The construction of the platform foundations was staged to prevent subsidence of the adjacent railway line, which remained in operation during the works. The building structure comprises reinforced concrete strip footings and slab, structural steel framing, core-filled block work and external masonry walls. External features display fair-faced masonry work treated with anti-graffiti spray, Alucobond features and Colorbond roof cladding.

Strengthened by the project safety management plan and its procedures, this project strives to achieve an injury-free workplace. The ongoing process of identifying and assessing workplace hazards through auditing and review began from well before the first day on site. Reviewing the risks throughout the initial planning stages, tender letting and then into construction, the aim is to always be one step ahead. Weekly toolbox talks bring together items raised on the safety walk, safety committee meeting, environmental walk and BORs as well as topical news from WorkSafe, reiterating to all what the minimum expectations are.

Works on this project comprised construction of a new administration building and an open learning centre facility. The striking, architecturally designed building is a hybrid mix of brickwork, metal cladding and an aluminum composite panel faรงade to form an impressive showcase entry to the college. The large solar glass located on the north and west-facing windows, overlooking the beautifully landscaped garden and large shade sail-covered area, displays an emphasis on design area. The superior construction quality is evident, emphasised by the particular attention to detail on all aspects of the project.

PROJECT: FRANKSTON HOSPITAL STAGE 3 AND EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT, FRANKSTON DESIGNER: LYONS, ROB TURSI PHOTOGRAPHER: SARAH LOUISE PHOTOGRAPHY WEBSITE: WWW.COCKRAM.COM

This building consists of a production/manufacturing area and an office and support area. The main structure features a clear-span, open-steel portal frame, precast concrete panels, pad and strip footings and an infill-reinforced concrete slab. Externally, patterned, coloured and precast panels compliment horizontal long-line cladding with double glazing to the office facade. The project involved multiple stage handovers, including base-build access to production area and external hardstand, in addition to fitout works access to production areas and amenities to allow the integration and commissioning of manufacturing phases.

The Frankston Hospital Stage 3 project is a significant expansion to the existing health site that consists of a new ground floor emergency department, replacing the existing one whilst increasing bed capacity and adding additional services. The main structure consists of a post-tensioned slab with Bondek formwork to facilitate construction in conjunction with class two off-form angled columns which act as a feature at the front entry of the emergency department. On top of the main concrete structure sits a single, level steel-framed structure that houses the new hospital’s main plant room.

This redevelopment is centered on four courtyards, each with varying rehabilitation functions. Structurally, the building features in-ground piling support ground slabs and post-tensioned suspended slabs over a new undercroft and ambulance bay, and a post-tensioned suspended slab in the administration area to allow for further expansion. The 42bed patient area is timber frame construction with a combination of timber rafters and trusses for the roof construction. The coloured reveals provide the façade with a rhythm of light and shade, thereby placing architectural importance on the quality of the patient’s accommodation.

This project involved the first stage of the development of the Werribee Mercy Hospital master plan consisting of a new two-level building for sub-acute care facilities. The building structure, plant rooms, lift shafts, service risers and incoming services mains have been constructed to allow for a further three levels of building above, as part of future staged developments on site. The external façade is a feature of the project that consists of pre-weathered zinc and Alucobond panel system. The system was comprehensively integrated with the aluminum window frames, internal lightweight Rondo wall system, and structural steel parapet and roof membrane.

FDC Construction & Fitout (VIC) Pty Ltd PROJECT: FITNESS FIRST, FLINDERS STREET, MELBOURNE DESIGNER: BALDASSO CORTESE PTY LTD PHOTOGRAPHER: YVONNE QUMI, YQ PHOTOGRAPHY WEBSITE: WWW.FDCBUILDING.COM.AU

This refurbishment and fitout over two levels was to create Fitness First’s new flagship platinum facility. Works included the demolition and strip-out of existing internal building and services elements, the building of extensive change rooms and amenities, the installation of a new internal stairwell linking level two with level three, and the completion of a partiallyinstalled base building main entry staircase. A unique feature of the facility involves the outdoor training area on the level three balcony. The original balustrade on the balcony did not comply with current standards, requiring new stainless steel and glazed handrails installed with integrated in-set LED lighting.

47

The key features of this new four-level building includes a stimulation laboratory containing mock operating theatres and inpatient wards for practical assessments, two lecture theatres and a PC2 lab providing necessary research facilities. The primary structure boasts in-situ concrete columns, shear walls and a primary core containing the elevators combined with post-tensioned Bondek slabs and traditional formwork beams. A steel structure has been installed to the concrete roof slab to create the atrium void roof and plant room and to support metal-deck roofing. Secondary steel wraps each level of the building and provides the necessary structure for the external cladding systems and windows.

The new Huntingdale Clubhouse’s defining design characteristic, and the project’s most significant challenge in terms of construction, is undoubtedly its eye-catching terracotta-tiled, multi-pitched roof. Conceived as six interconnected gables of varying sizes and angles, the construction of this complex architectural hallmark typifies the unconventional nature of the building and the challenges associated with its construction. Juxtaposed against the angular roof and designed to underscore the unique roof design, rolled and formed metal fascia add depth and definition to the building’s distinctive roofline.

Collaborating with Nespresso’s architectural firm in Switzerland, Dewcape implemented the design brief to complement the constraints of the site whilst also using key elements that are the Nespresso signature. The site at handover was completely bare, with no walls on three sides and zero services. From these primitive beginnings, the project is now a split-level, high end retail fitout constructed within a ten-week period. The location of the project includes a large section of a heritage façade and therefore the construction and design had to comply with and assimilate into the overall history of the building.

The landmark 42-level WRAP residences development comprises 298 one- and two-bedroom apartments, common areas, a café and bar area, and nine levels of above-ground car parking. The most complex design element was the building’s featured wrap façade; this consisted of a web-like cladding fabricated from a 6mm folded steel sheet, precast concrete and in situ concrete. A high-performance protective paint finish with colour fastening qualities was also applied to the wrap element, which resulted in an extended warranty.

An integral part of the strategy behind the successful health, safety and environmental culture at Eastland is due to the establishment and effective management of a dedication HSE committee. The committee regularly consulted construction workers, management and subcontractor management on hazards and proposed control measures, to ensure that they are appropriate. Following implementation of these control measures, the committee monitored and reviewed their suitability.

During construction of this facility, major safety risks were identified associated with the separation of people and plant, the management of workfront interfaces and working with live solutions. A “safety first” culture was adopted on site by the large workforce through Leighton Contractors’ program for managing safety risks, ‘Construction Safety Essentials’. This underpins the project’s approach to health and safety management, outlining non-negotiable requirements for critical safety risks and defining personal obligations and responsibility. Leadership walk-and-talk visits, ‘fresh eyes’ safety walks and hazard observations by subcontractors ensured early identification of workplace hazards.

The state-of-the-art training facility project comprises a range of emergency response and management learning environments designed and built specifically to meet the Melbourne Fire Brigades’s requirements. Accommodation includes an academic building comprising offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, mess, change room facilities and a gymnasium, a drill yard and fire station and a practical learning environment recreating a number of emergency scenarios. The project also involved sustainability and energy efficiency measures incorporated into the design of the administration building and complex service works.

This design and construct project included the complete internal demolition of the existing building, including constructing a new gaming room, sports bar, library lounge/wine bar, dining room, amenities and two outdoor alfresco areas. The builder worked tirelessly with the client and architect to ensure that the renovation of the existing building maintained its Victorian heritage, whilst adding a contemporary style transforming the hotel to a modern era and expanding their targeted audience and clientele. A tremendous amount of thought was put into the external landscaping, as it was important to combine the natural outlook of the rolling hills with the dining experience the hotel offered.

The Secretary of the Department of Business and Innovation engaged Probuild for the most significant renovation of the Shrine since its original construction. The brief included the development of the Shrine’s under-utilised and largely uninhabited central undercroft, and extending it to the south quadrant, beneath the existing stairs and beamed landscape, creating a mirror image of the existing Visitor Centre development on the north side. The development of a detailed procedures plan was required to deal with heritage sensitivities of the original 1920s structure.

Developed for Cardinia Shire Council within the Officer Town Centre, the building consists of three dedicated levels of office space and multi-purpose facilities on the ground floor, including meeting rooms, reception, customer service areas and retail tenancy. The upper floor offices are separated by two distinctive zones divided by a central four-level atrium spanning the length of the building, with an architectural glazed roof, glass stair and multiplefeature link bridges connecting the two office zones. The design and construction of the development has delivered an innovative building of exemplary architectural and design standards.

Bosco Jonson helps to complete a second project for the Shrine of Remembrance. It is a great privilege that we were selected by the Probuild Team, as the surveyors for the Shrine of Remembrance project. This remarkable memorial is an Australian focal point for the 100th year anniversary of the First World War as well as commemorating the sacrifices made by so many Australians in every major conflict since. Bosco Jonson has previously worked on the evolving awardwinning Visitor Centre, entrance courtyard and undercroft areas, which contribute to this being one of the most acclaimed Shrine landmarks in the world today. Bosco Jonson congratulates Probuild for the success of this project, which was delivered 3 months ahead of schedule. We are honoured to have been selected to work on such a significant memorial landmark.

The Coppersmith Hotel provided a complex design and construct project, which required a new boutique hotel constructed behind a 145-year-old heritage façade. Works involved full demolition of the existing structure whilst retaining the south and west elevations, with a new steel structure from the ground to roof, including the basement and steel for a roof deck and plant platform that integrated with the existing façade. The project team managed this design meticulously right through to delivery whilst also overcoming significant challenges with face retention, site access, scope challenges and existing conditions.

The scope of works on this project required a fasttrack commercial fitout, with the complexities of a full structural refurbishment, which involved the existing facility completely stripped of its 1980s persona, and a new heavily-timbered, modern high-end fitout installed, transforming this club facility. A complete demolition of the existing structure was needed whilst retaining the existing roof structure, with full services upgrades. The entire façade treatment was stripped back with a shiplap timber cladding façade installed. The project team overcame significant challenges with site access, existing service locations, inclement weather and tight programming.

The Station Hotel project consists of the demolition of the existing buildings and the construction of two basement levels and six suspended floors including the ground floor, incorporating a total of 41 high-end apartments over five floors and six retail spaces. Structural methods include an AFS core, pre-cast columns and external panels and in situ and posttensioned suspended panels. The ground floor slab was the most challenging slab, consisting of eight separate pours. The external cladding incorporates frameless glass shop fronts, limestone-tiled walls, Alucobond, render and seraphic glass curtain walls.

Located in a heritage building with a highly detailed building structure, this fitout on behalf of Dolce & Gabbana demanded very particular detail and highquality fixtures and finishes. The fitout over two levels involved splitting the store into male and female sections, linked by an overhead bridge and custommade staircase. A large component of the project scope entailed the delivery, storage, assembly and installation of high-quality overseas manufactured joinery, and preparing exact areas for placement of the joinery prior to its arrival in the country.

The aim of this project was to develop an unoccupied and unserviced section of land to provide a container storage yard, which includes facilities for container repair and wash bay services along with office and staff amenities. The design criteria required providing a facility in which a double container-handling unit could operate with unlimited repetitions for the storage of empty containers. Examples of value management initiatives include the structural redesign of concrete pavements from traditionally reinforced post-tensioned slabs, offering cost savings associated with reductions in steel quantities and profile thickness.

This fitout of approximately 1500sqm consisted of a new reception and waiting area, meeting rooms, conference rooms, phone booths, kitchen and open plan workstations. The general project and design intent focused on recycling and implementing “homegrown” products where possible. Implementation of tools such as a Quality Control Plan ensured finishes were up to the correct standard required in a highend fitout. The key challenge throughout involved program constraints (i.e. procurement of light fittings, timber, etc.) and ensuring that the quality of the finished product was not hindered in any way.

The unique nature of the brief required a thorough consideration of the flammable nature of the fabrics stored on site. Fire-related engineering was therefore incorporated into the design, with schemes for fire compartments and a fire door versus a fire sprinkler system both considered. Ultimately, a fire sprinkler system was chosen. The predominant materials used in the build included precast concrete, polycarbonate sheets throughout the showroom, extending to the warehouse and the front of the building. The exposed colour of the concrete inspired its smooth continuation to the façade of the building, demonstrated by the contrasting strips on the exterior, angular geometrics, and the contour of the building.

This educational facility required the construction of an entirely new campus capable of catering for 925 students encompassing two buildings and soft and hard landscaping. Structurally, the project incorporated a mix of steel, timber and concrete precast elements clad in a combination of Colorbond longline sheeting, Vitrabond, Danpalon, compressed sheet and plywood. Once the structure and external envelope had been completed, internal finishes to the classrooms, learning and staff areas commenced. Externally, the finishes are many and varied; however, all were chosen to complement one another, blending function with the aesthetic of the surrounding housing estate, semi-rural landscape and coastal aspect.

9 Darling Apartments features a boutique six level low rise building consisting of 90 high end apartments. Minimilism, simplicity and elegance combine to create contemporary and highly liveable spaces. The structure comprises both in-situ and precast concrete elements and efficient post tensioned concrete slabs. Externally, the façade boasts glazed aluminum windows, including laminate, exposed brighton-light precast panels, rendered precast, alucabond cladding and painted cement sheet features. The building is designed as sculptural object and integrates form, façade and planning into an overall design.

Constructed over two stages, this residential development encompasses three separate buildings containing 287 apartments. Each building is situated over two basement levels containing approximately 300 car spaces, services and back-of-house areas. Construction methods include both in situ and precast vertical elements and efficient post-tensioned slabs, the five cores are precast with wet joints. The external finishes relate to the surrounding context and, in particular, the industrial character of the area. The use of finishes with an industrial aesthetic is evident in the mix of hard-edge finishes combined with the use of raw masonry.

Haven Apartments is the second stage of a threestage mixed-use development consisting of 169 high-end apartments of various sizes and designs. The structure comprises both in situ and two directional post-tensioned slabs, vertical in situ elements, vertical precast elements, and architectural structural steel elements such as the entry arbours, restaurant façade, apartment arbours and feature post brackets. Externally, the façade boasts glazed aluminium windows using clear laminated glass situated in various custom architectural powder coat colours. Abutting the glazing is architectural cladding of Colorbond interlocking façade panels, and spotted gum shiplapped panels.

Quality execution and high-end finishes were paramount in this signature residential property development, comprising of four apartments. The intricate use of in situ concrete with raw finishes presented significant complexities and required an exercise in precision. A concrete plinth elevates the building off ground which, over time, will be covered in foliage; in the meantime it was bush-hammered for an immediate visual effect. The interior boasts the inclusion of exceptional interior materials and finishes, including bespoke wooden joinery, stone slabs, blue stone tiling, white Calcutta granite, timber boards and veneers.

This design and construct project introduces an ALDI store and five additional tenancies inside an extension to the Northland Shopping Centre. Works involved the demolition of the existing bus interchange area and the construction of a new public bus interchange and terminal within an existing carpark to service the shopping centre. Complex basebuild works for ALDI were incorporated into the ground level of an existing multi-level carpark. This project presented considerable challenges, including diverting public access for eight weeks through a tunnel erected using scaffolding and hoarding, which ran directly through the project.

The scope of works involved the expansion of this factory outlet, horizontally adding 6000sqm of retail space, over 120 additional car park spaces and the demolition and refurbishment of the existing retail space. Base building works include demolition of an existing on-grade car park, retaining wall, loading dock and landscape concrete car park. Once demolition, civil works and service relocations had been completed, the new concrete car park and post-tensioned suspended deck were constructed. The external finish adopted similar colour coding to the existing façade, with stepped ComTex paneling around the perimeter, giving the impression that each feature on the varying precast panels was different.

This three-storey student accommodation building consists of five cylindrical pods linked by a central stair shaft, containing 20 separate units and a common area on the top floor. Structural works include concrete strip footings and bored piers forming the main components of the in-ground structure supporting the ground floor concrete slab. The steel structure was engineered to meet the circularshaped pattern consistent throughout the building. The brickwork was carefully selected to match the colour palette of the other existing campus buildings. The college demanded a very strict timeframe for the construction period due to the start of the mid-year semester in July.

The Kennington Village contains various retail outlets, including a Woolworths supermarket and commercial office space. The structure comprises a concrete slab on ground, precast concrete wall panels, large-span structural steel and a metal roof deck. The internal finishes are of high quality incorporating polished concrete floors, high-level glazing and feature exposed timber beams linking with the façade. While the build was simple, the site posed a high level of difficulty, particularly with regard to various contaminants uncovered throughout the excavation works.

The single-level brick structure incorporates a large steel truss roof frame, providing mounting capacity for external PV solar panels and facilitating large clear-span internal spaces with cathedral ceilings. Curved plaster ceilings, cork wall linings and featureglazed brickwork all required a high level of quality and workmanship. The single-skin masonry façade was constructed using glazed bricks, with their vast array of colours used to form feature patterns. Poor soil was removed from the entire footprint of the building and car park, and was replaced with mudstone to form the subgrade.

Hacer Group PROJECT: FOOTSCRAY PLAZA REDEVELOPMENT, FOOTSCRAY DESIGNER: JAM ARCHITECTS WEBSITE: WWW.HACER.COM.AU

The scope of the project required the construction of a three-storey mixed-use building on a compact site. Works involved the demolition of an existing single-storey brick warehouse, including asbestos removal and the protection of adjoining and surrounding properties. The suspended, post-tensioned floor slabs are enclosed by a steel-framed mezzanine and roof structure. Off-form concrete is a feature of the ground floor with VM zinc cladding on the upper external walls and roof. Steel windows and double doors are used throughout, including on the large north-facing balcony and glazed façade, which encloses two levels of commercial office and a luxury city residence.

Innovative methods used on this project involved a predominant triangulated, glazed, feature façade encompassing five levels of premium retail space redesigned and engineered from aluminium to a composite steel-and- aluminum framed system. A steel die-grid was developed which, in addition to maintaining a highly architectural appearance both internally and externally, also served as the structural backbone of the façade. A four-level glazed link bridge formed a prominent feature over a busy city thoroughfare, and punctuating the façades of existing stores opposite presented challenges to satisfy the requirements of adjacent tenants.

The preliminary works of this project began with the construction of two new lift cores through the existing five-level structure, including new footings and pits at basement level. As the demolition was continuing on the floors above, the footing and foundation works commenced in the basement, working up towards level five, to meet the new residential levels. The new structure for six levels of residential works then commenced from the existing level-six slab. The new structure encompasses steel framework with Bondek slabs, to reduce the weight on the existing structure.

Qanstruct (Aust) were engaged by their client to construct a new three-level office to compliment their client’s warehousing activities. The structure comprises of precast concrete, post-tensioned suspended floors complimented by a structural steel frame. Externally, the building provides a richly coloured canvas and an entry flanked by variegated coloured-aluminum battens, and the soffit has a “lead in” created by taking the façade’s multi-coloured aluminum panel and bending these to the point of entry. The internal fitout involved a number of external interior design consultants, and included the integration of the feature “tree house and beanstalk” meeting rooms as part of the overall project delivery.

This building is very unique for a catholic church and whilst modern materials, finishes and architectural details have been included there is still a strong connection to clerical and religious themes. The foundation of the facility is a conventional concrete slab with a splayed seating area, ramped to allow for premium viewing of the sanctuary. Extensive architectural metalwork has been applied to the façade, including Corten cladding with a rusted finish and copper cladding to the entry. The project was delivered in time for the busy Christmas calendar.

The brief required the refurbishment and conversion of an existing five-storey office building into a contemporary modern meeting centre. Works posed many challenges including that the ground floor and levels one and two remain fully tenanted during construction, meaning extreme care had to be taken to minimise disruption and to ensure the safety of all staff. The upper levels three and four have been converted from an old office space into bespoke facilities comprising two function areas and dining rooms. To accommodate the increased load associated with this design, carbon fibre strengthening was added to the existing slabs on levels three and four.

This apartment complex comprises 41 apartments over six levels incorporating secure basement parking complete with car stackers. Levels one to three are flush with the property boundaries whilst the upper apartments are set back to comply with town planning requirements and to add complexity to the building’s design. Diaphragm wall construction was selected given the close proximity to the beach and high water table and because it is considered the most watertight piling retention system on the market. The upper levels of the development are constructed predominantly of concrete.

PROJECT: VEOLIA, BULLA PHOTOGRAPHER: MATTHEW MALLET PHOTOGRAPHY WEBSITE: WWW.BUILDCORPCOMMERCIAL.COM.AU

This green waste recovery facility project presented significant challenges, as the new facility had to be ready to take green waste from eleven councils by an immovable date. Due to the tight time restraints, the footings and in-ground works to the 14 vessels had to be completed whilst the warehouse structure was being constructed. This meant that sequencing had to be very precise and each task start and completion date adhered to. The large precast concrete vessels had to be constructed to be totally airtight and connected to sophisticated drainage, air flow and odour control systems that were installed as part of the works.

The building is visually stunning from an architectural perspective and utilises significant amounts of high-quality reflective glass on its façade. In addition to the façade treatment, it has been complemented with curved, class-one feature concrete columns to the entranceway, which delicately helps the building position itself within its surroundings. ADCO worked closely with the design team and client in the selection of the highest quality materials, whilst ensuring that the project budget was maintained and strict performance requirements were met.

This unique facility comprises of two levels with accommodation for a wide range of health disciplines meant to meet holistic and tailored treatment plans for patients. Cutting-edge 3D technology was used due to the complexity of the building innovation and to support the design team’s concepts. With rooms available for professional atmospheres along with large communal areas and break quarters, the two storey U-shaped structure incorporates splayed and angular forms and features, including Japanesethemed feature walls and European shingle tiles. ADCO have provided several money-saving initiatives to keep costs low and offer maximum performance and value for money.

Sustainability was a key aspect in mind in the delivery of this remarkable project. Improving community services and supporting the existing structure were paramount in this minor refurbishment and extension that tripled the floor area of this centre from 600spm to 1800sqm. This building targeted a 50 per cent improvement in total energy consumption compared to a minimum BCA-compliant building. This open feel offers an attractive welcome with both raw and finished timber tones. The integration with the existing structures posed a significant challenge; therefore, a structural retrofit was carried out along with a weatherproof canopy so work could be carried out safely and without delay.

This project involved the construction of a new learning centre comprising 12 learning spaces, associated shared spaces, change facilities,a covered connection to existing buildings and associated civil works. Construction methods included earthworks, construction of concrete foundations, erection and assembly of steel structure and concrete panels, metal roofing and new services. The new building will offer students an extraordinary new learning environment aimed at boosting creativity, inspiration and innovation.

This state-of-the-art office building has world-class, comfortable facilities for the staff, with two gyms, atrium garden and barbecue area. Corplex worked hard to make sure this project was completed in perfect time and below budget. Use of the existing site conditions, such as the expanse of glazing that is thermally and acoustically insulated, allows the building to maximise the natural light penetration and minimise the need for artificial lighting.

This showpiece of the Bayport Group has an altogether superior level of finish. The original design had to start with efficiency as a staple point. Housing several types of large machinery, the warehouse had to be both usable and flexible. The office layout provides extensive freedom for staff to get around and maximise their potential and efficiency. Multiple break out areas, tearooms and a staff gym allow staff to feel at home whilst at work. In order to create a building that stood out from its surroundings, conventional design had to be put aside in order to make way for innovation.

The hospital required significant upgrades to mental health facilities and support areas such as dining facilities, gym, clean utilities, dirty utilities, group room and staff areas. This expansion also needed to be achieved whilst increasing the available parking on an already-tight site to meet statutory requirements. Extensive upgrades to existing services were achieved through overhaul of electrical mains, substation, main switchboard and main generator and fire boosters. This required a close relationship with electrical and fire authorities. This enormous expansion focused on minimizing the disruption to the existing building whilst incorporating fresh landscaping and high glass balustrades for patient safety.

The Marais project involved a complex refurbishment of a cluster of two-storey retail premises with a heritage overlay. Situated at the top end of Bourke Street, Built created a high-quality, luxury retail boutique. Existing heritage facades were repaired to match the former aesthetic. New shopfront glazing incorporated structural steel window frames designed to fulfill the heritage intent of the planning permit. The design of the space was an evolution throughout the entire construction phase, requiring a flexible and solution-focused approach. In spite of the many changes in design and the uncovering of substantial building problems there was no movement in the timeframe for completion.

The entire demolition process from strip-out through to hard demolition is set to run for over 8 months. When complete, it will make way for the newly configured structure and high end fitout to commence. When complete, the rebranded St. Collins Lane will see three full levels of boutique retail and an entire floor dedicated to restaurants and casual dining. Safety in design and finding smart solutions to buildability challenges were central factors in both the overall success of the project and in achieving high safety performance. Built believes that safety begins with culture and have invested heavily in creating a safety culture.

In an unprecedented move for any restaurant, world-renowned chef Heston Blumenthal has temporarily relocated The Fat Duck to Crown Towers in Melbourne, almost in its entirety, from Bray in the United Kingdom. The Fat Duck is themed as an Alice in Wonderland experience. The build encompassed the complete demolition of the existing Breezes restaurant and the construction of a new glazed façade and restaurant space. The design provides a unique dining experience in Melbourne’s fine fining precinct with an extremely high grade of finishes and attention to detail. The project is spread over three levels with a preparation kitchen, show kitchen and extensive plan room.

These two defence bases have received significant and admirable upgrades to their infrastructure, external works and landscaping. The construction, largely of concrete and steel, required a high degree of structural integrity to achieve the required security levels for a building of this stature. The refurbishing included a warehouse, covered hardstand, weapons storage and repair facility, vehicle wash, loading ramp, secure vehicle storage, guardhouse, gatehouse, new fire pump house and tanks, IT and Communication building, hardstand and roads, and new staff car parking. External finishes present clean lines, rigid construction and a uniform appearance. Functionality was kept as a priority.

H&M, a global retailer, selected this heritage-listed building for its iconic nature in the heart of Melbourne. The works commenced in an occupied retail building and the fitout was integrated into the delicate base building refurbishment to achieve the necessary time benefits. The heritage aspect of the building added a layer of complexity to the fitout. As with most global fashion retailers, H&M had their own in-house designers, which worked in conjunction with the local architects to complete the documentation. A world-class lighting system was incorporated into the project, which highlighted the original heritage features of the building.

This project included the refurbishment of Building197, minor works to the Scheps Building, the construction of a new bike shelter and installation of a new sub-station to supply power to the entire International House College. A tennis court and two existing buildings were demolished during the course of the works. The George Hicks Building involved the construction of 57 student apartments, tutorial and major presentation rooms, a café and a commercial kitchen, over a total duration of 16 months. Each apartment has its own bathroom and 42 of the apartments have their own kitchenette. Every level has a communal lounge/dining area with television and cooking facilities.

The Deakin Trade Training Centre is essentially a number of highly specialised building types merged into one, single-level, free-standing steel- and-timber-framed structure with a large expanse of associated car parking and paved works area. This building provides facilities for technical training to high school students in various trades during their VCE years. An array of purpose built rooms for engineering, avionics, electrotech, and automotive and detailing workshops are incorporated within this complex. Each of the rooms required detailed services provision for the base building services as well for the specialised plant and equipment needed to fit out those areas.

Building Engineering was engaged to construct this purpose-built music facility including one-on-one teaching classrooms, a rehearsal hall and oratory rooms. The building construction comprised of precast concrete, structural steel superstructure and timber acoustic panels. The building incorporated bluestone external cladding and acoustic treatment internally. A chapel was also constructed adjoining the music centre to facilitate St. Kevin’s Day celebrations. It was noted that there would be very little time between practical completion and when the school would occupy and start using the building for teaching purposes.

The redevelopment of the historic Dimmeys site and clock tower landmark in Richmond was certainly not for the faint-hearted. The project involved the creation of a two-level car park, a state-of-the-art ground floor Coles supermarket, 106 unique residential dwellings including a combination of heritage loft apartments, double-storey townhouses and a ten-storey tower of apartments. These “New York” luxury-styled apartments enjoy access to a large landscaped terrace area, communal function room, gymnasium, spa, sauna, and billiards and theatre room. The historic façade retention was a highly technical operation, which was critical to completing the project as quickly as possible.

This superstructure includes a wide array of different teaching facilities including computer labs, classrooms, student meeting rooms and study and office areas not to mention being home to over 200 staff members. This facility offers a 5-star Green Star design rating. A key feature of the building is the precast façade including two-storey high penetrations and a combination of a full air-conditioned heating and cooling/naturally-ventilated zoned mechanical system. The external zone is a combination of green spaces incorporating hard and soft landscaping elements and the construction of a bridge over the moat.

This 120-bed aged care facility allows for both low and high levels of care. The demolition of the existing aged care facility and adjoining residential property made way for the construction of this expansive new structure. The façade includes curtain wall and veneer brickwork through to the mansard roof. Above the roof is a large structural steel plant platform for mechanical and hydraulic services. Four levels of accommodation include individual resident units, resident common spaces and staff kitchen and relaxation areas. External works include multiple landscaped courtyards with beautiful and functional tiered garden beds.

The Emporia Apartments project brings a new dawn to Melbourne’s high-rise sky space through the construction of an expressive curvilinear form and distinctive façade created from white concrete panels and aluminium bronze. This residential tower comprises of 140 apartments over nine levels consisting of one-, two- and three-bedroom dwellings. The free-form building sits on top of a three-level basement with parking for 160 cars through the use of cutting-edge car stacking technology. Six large retails spaces occupy the ground level along Commercial Road with an eye-catching ground floor lobby and communal spaces including indoor and outdoor entertaining, dining and lounge facilities, barbecue areas and an Asian-inspired garden.

This operation involved the extension of the existing 20-storey tower at 525 Lonsdale Street to incorporate an additional five levels of chambers and an additional level for the plant room. The upgrades to the high-rise lifts was of critical importance in this project which included not only new motors, controls and fitout of lift cars but also the extension of the lifts to the new levels and to the lower ground street level. The chamber fitouts benefited from differing floor finishes including several types of stone, tiling and marble pin in addition to a multitude of joinery finishes.

This super clinic provides same-day multidisciplinary ambulatory diagnosis and treatment services as well as general practitioner services and urgent care services for people with conditions that are low in complexity. The clinic will not only deliver health services but also aim to improve the life outcomes and address the inherent inequalities of the local residents in Broadmeadows. The provision of a meaningful place within the local community provides the ability to support local residents, not only addressing their health needs but aiming to support and encourage people with social disadvantages to be better supported with high-level health services.

This 77-apartment complex required significant demolition of the existing structure, site retention and excavation for the single-level reinforced concrete basement which connects the three towers. This development offers 12 active façades, which have all been treated as separate design elements. The change in colours and textures offer movement to the façade. Cost effective and readily available materials were utilised effectively to create a façade that contrasts but also complements the streetscape. This site offers great value for money, situated central to shopping precincts with easy access to transport.

The Graphite Apartments have been designed to wow with the building’s strong imposition on the streetscape. The verticality of five levels above ground is pronounced with angular lines and bold use of materials including timber-look aluminium screening. The northern elevation balustrading is cantilevered with obscure glass panels resulting in strong horizontal articulation. The east and south elevations incorporate full-height screens, which connect to lower level garden beds allowing creeping plants to climb up the structure for a vertical garden paradise. Internally, the building is equally impressive with the foyer setting the standard for quality, comprising of large porcelain tiles, mirror walls and designer light fixtures.

Deakin University’s Frontage Building is a worldclass educational facility. This significant addition to the Burwood campus now provides a range of research, meeting, retail, executive and administrative spaces spread over an enormous area. Its striking intersecting towers sitting over an expansive landscaped podium create the main gateway for staff, students and the public alike. Emphasis has been placed on providing an excellent and flexible indoor environment. Deakin staff are now enjoying working in the new facility, with state-of-the-art technologies, open and airy indoor spaces, and flexible landscaped surrounds.

This facility represented an integrated and sympathetic design blending in the surrounds of this residential area of Melbourne. Landscaping of the project wanted to achieve a low-maintenance, highimpact sympatric design ensuring enough privacy for residents without closing in the home. Internal finishes maintained a comfortable environment with the clinical requirements of an aged care home. Both the council and Bupa were extremely happy with the end result of the project and it received considerable attention, particularly from the Bupa team at the home and the resident’s families.

The scope of works called for the construction of 21 boutique warehouses. Architecturally designed, the buildings utilise a combination of exterior finishes including precast concrete walls with steel internal structure, interlocking panels and aluminum horizontal sun shade louvers with aluminum windows. The quality and attention to detail demonstrated throughout the build can be attributed to the specified materials, quality of workmanship, site supervision, the clients contract administrator and architects continuted input.

This project is the first stage of an educational learning facility for the Parish of Werribee. On a green field site, construction comprises a high-quality building that houses learning areas, collaborative space, community space, amenities and office areas. Included was services infrastructure for the future school growth, a car park, landscaping and fencing. The building makes heavy use of timber materials in laminated beams and columns along with some structural steel. It was architecturally designed with exposed rafters, plywood ceiling panels, external timber board cladding and internal timber battens. White-glazed bricks provide a great contrast to the timber elements.

This modern urban apartment complex consists of 48 dwellings spread over four levels, five shops on the ground floor plus parking and bike storage on two levels, ground and basement. The building is predominantly concrete in stature with structural steel incorporated throughout the remarkable faced feature areas. The building blends impeccably into the Mitcham Neighbourhood Activity Centre. The quality of construction and attention to detail is visible throughout and can be attributed to the specified materials, quality of workmanship, site supervision and the architects in attendance on site. To create a thermally efficient building, a central, solar gas-boosted hot water system and 10kw solar panels were installed to power common areas.

This classic yet modern apartment complex house 42 apartments spaced over five floors along with parking and bike storage on two levels, ground and basement. This is a predominantly concrete structure, with some structural steel incorporated for columns, facades and feature blades. The heritage of the façade was retained on request and included in the design and is the jewel in the crown of this project. The initiative made use of the original red brick along with modern metallic blades to provide a very alternative look that is well-suited to the Brunswick location. This structure blends well into the popular Brunswick location and caters to its targeted clientele.

This distinct block of 28 boutique apartments necessitated site retention and excavation for the single-level concrete basement incorporating a cutting-edge car stacker facility. Internally, these luxury apartments offer a mixture of carpet to bedrooms, porcelain tiles to bathrooms whilst living areas were either engineered bamboo timber or large-format porcelain tiles. Balconies, terraces and courtyards were also large-format porcelain floor tiles with an outdoor slip resistance. The basement storage and car park areas were designed as “wet” with the incorporation of spoon drains and a pump well. The 28 apartments are cleverly positioned on the site, complementing their low-density surroundings.

The exterior of the building has been designed to reflect the area’s rag trade past whilst celebrating the modern physical and cultural contexts of the Chapel Street precinct. The clean lines and bold colours form an architecturally detailed façade combining glass curtain walls, precast concrete, Alucobond and laser-cut metal screens creating a visually striking presence within the precinct. The top level also incorporates a spacious common area with landscaping, picnic-style seating and barbecue facility for all residents to utilise. The project has been designed to be environmentally friendly using rainwater that is collected in water tanks and recycled.

This project comprises a seven level building consisting of 25 apartments, ground floor office and associated car parking. The quality of construction and attention to detail is visible throughout the entire building achieved through the level of workmanship, specified materials, site supervision and the architect’s attendance on site. A degree of difficulty on this site included building over an easement on site, late design changes, procurement of long lead times on items and details of several varying finishes.

The aim of ELF Stage 1 is to provide for increased training requirements in support of the ELF initiative located at the rear of the Puckapunyal Military Base. This stage consists of the construction of new buildings and the reconfiguration and refurbishment of existing facilities at the School of Armour and School of Artillery, Puckapunyal. The base largely consists of dated, brick-built, 40-plus-year-old accommodation and office suites. This overhaul will include six accommodation buildings consisting of 288 bedrooms, 36 common rooms, 36 laundry rooms, 144 bathrooms and 23 external locker storage areas along with all associated roads and parking. This design aims to be a robust and long-lived final product.

This specialist centre has experienced a dramatic refurbishment having started with the advancements of a basement car park, functional layouts and specific budget constraints. The project includes four levels of tenanted areas containing a plethora of dedicated consulting suites and specialist areas for radiotherapy, pharmacy, radiology and oncology. All of this was required to be invisible from the street. The new car park creates room for at least 72 spaces along with fire tanks, fire booster cupboard, valve room and a security control room. Internally, the use of natural products such as concrete, stone and timber makes for a calming and modernist look.

The Mornington Centre is a state-of-the-art, purposebuilt inpatient geriatric rehabilitation wing extension to the existing facility, specialising in the care of patients with multiple chronic and complex medical conditions including cognitive impairment or dementia. The building is both innovative and light-filled in design, built around two internal courtyards and surrounded by extensive relaxation gardens. The project consists of the provision of a new building adjacent to an existing 60-bed unit. The building is worthy of significant recognition due to the quality of the completed project and the fact that it creates an integrated centre of excellence for the local community.

The Monash Green Chemical Futures building is an innovative design inspired by molecular structures. It is a synthesis of best practice engineering, architectural form, speed of construction and community integration. The architectural intent and building form included large, open laboratory areas with minimal columns to maximise flexibility for the end users. The façade design offers a typical glazing and cladding system combined with a series of angles and irregular forms protruding from the building line. A key architectural feature of the building is the feature stair in the atrium near the east entry.

This significant precinct redevelopment involves the upgrade of the Margaret Court Arena to an independent and fully functioning multi-use area comprising of 1500 extra sets, a fully operational roof with fully enclosed foyer, new changing rooms, ten new food and beverage outlets and artist green rooms amongst many others. The external finishes to this project are robust and high quality in material. The external concourse and stairs are a combination of bluestone paving and timber seats that are shaded by large timber- and aluminium-clad roof overhangs to provide shade to the patrons during the Australian Open.

This project for Charles Sturt University involved the construction of a new building, and the refurbishment of an existing building to accommodate a new Equine Sciences Learning Centre. Architectural finishes of a ‘rural’ character have been successfully utilised combining polished concrete floors, recycled Blackbutt timber walls and warm timber ceilings and doors. The construction was carried out in two stages with the main new building being handed over for occupation prior to the existing building being refurbished, allowing for the campus to remain operational.

The design and construction of this project was unique, particularly the need to maintain the heritage requirements and suitability to the landscape of the Albury Railway behind. However the vision of the client was to construct a contemporary cycle station warehouse with a lively and active feel, and adjoining Café, creating a space for people to come and enjoy. With specialised consultation and guidance from heritage specialists the desired result of mixing the old with the new ensured that the balance of old and new architecture were successfully incorporated.

The design and construction of this new facility involves construction of a new science centre and refurbishment of existing lab assistant and storage room. From the feature glass doors at the two new entries, articulating the elevations of the external building features, to the high ceilings of the classrooms, students and staff are invited into a creative atmosphere for learning. In addition, bright colours, curves, angles and clean lines, textured blockwork, feature bricks and aluminum composite paneling, further encourage this environment. The external landscaping, include areas for quite study, outside classrooms and relaxation.

This tired and run down building had not undergone any major renovations for over twenty years, and was in desperate need of refurbishment. Works include a major demolition of the existing internals, double glazed windows installed into solid external brick walls and the grand entry. Further works incorporate a 50kw Photo Voltaic Solar power system and zoned reversed air conditioning. After a five month timeline, the building now presents as a modern, light and user friendly property.

The scope for this project required the construction of a new learning centre comprising meeting rooms, open learning spaces, a wet area, compositing toilet, disabled amenities, kitchenette and storeroom. The building has been designed around teaching environmental studies, requiring the building materials to include a variety of local species including trees used as decorative columns, timber flitches from local saw mills, and Victorian Ash timber windows, doors, window sills and skirting. The brickwork is Timbercrete Super blocks made from 100% recycled materials and the floor combines polished concrete with Tarrawingee River Stone.

Given the sensitive nature of items being stored, it was necessary for the space to be absolutely waterproof and have optimum temperature and humidity controls.

The design of the new building integrates innovative and conscious sustainable solutions. Passive hydrothermal air conditioning provides fresh air precooled by thermal exchange to water stored in tanks below the plaza. Air flow is induced by hot, stale air rising to be expelled through thermal chimneys with clerestory windows. Composite slab floors, pre-cast concrete walls and existing triple brick wall structures provide thermal mass. Secondary finishes are limited and cladding systems require minimum maintenance. Cladding systems include a ribbed profile Colorbond providing self-shading. An innovative holistic approach to environmental, functional and aesthetic design has contributed to reduced construction, operational and energy costs.

This new build comprises of steel framed, concrete slab construction with external walls of steel stud and a combination of Colorbond steel cladding and alpolic aluminium. Internally, there consists and entry/reception, consulting suites, waiting rooms, offices and storage, rehabilitation areas, and surgery areas. Commercial grade finishes have been used throughout due to the high traffic and stresses placed on vital facility such as this. In addition to the main building, significant civil works have been carried out including a new driveway and entry area, covered portico, outside lighting and significant upgrades to the fire services.

PROJECT DELWP BENDOC CONSOLIDATION PROJECT, BENDOC

This project involved the construction of a fivebed mental health wing situated next to the existing Block K Flynn Wing. It added a large amount of new building, which included refurbishment of an existing corridor to seamlessly link the new build to the hospital. The development will provide five new bedrooms with ensuites. Two are double bedrooms with an interconnecting door for extended family use, of which one could accommodate a bariatric patient. The works also included landscaping (both softscape and hardscape), sail sunshade structures and entrance/pavement to the new building. The facility will encounter heavy traffic and constant usage by a variety of health care professionals.

A feature façade around the amenities building gives the building a striking effect with the Colorbond colours used being representative of the colours found in the surrounding native forest. By using themolock lexan to the part wall of the briefing room lends itself to providing opaque natural light and eliminating the need for large windows. Bondor paneling was used both to the walls and roof of the amenities building providing speed in construction, quietness within the building, insulation and the virtual elimination of ongoing maintenance to the building. Solar panels to the crew amenities building will over the term provide an input credit to the power usage of the building.

This project consisted of the need to construct a new food technology room, two theory classrooms, woodwork practical room and teach office/resource room. The joinery and stainless steel works manufactured and installed was of a high standard in the food technology room. The block work and engineered timber on the outer walls was also of an extremely high quality. The coordination of trades was of high importance, as the building required the installation of complex fire safety systems, data and electrical services and mechanical systems to suit each of the specific trade skill zones.
