HNC Therapeutic Counselling Summary: This course is aimed at candidates who are working towards becoming a therapeutic counsellor in an agency context in both health care and non-medical settings. This course will prepare you to practice as a counsellor within the context of an agency’s service framework but later (with experience and support from a supervisor) may progress to independent practice. This course is studied part time over two years.
Modules: The programme is delivered in small, focused groups by experienced tutors. Learning, teaching and assessment strategies provide students with a range of active opportunities to engage and develop understanding, apply knowledge and practice subject specialist as well as transferable and cognitive skills. Students can expect a mix of online and on campus teaching (subject to Government guidance). Our virtual learning environment (VLE) allows you to stay on top of assignments 24/7. Students will be studying a suite of seven Level 4 units to demonstrate knowledge, skills and behaviours including: • Working ethically, safely and professionally as a counsellor • Working within a counselling relationship • Working with client diversity in counselling work • Working within a user-centred approach to counselling • Working with self-awareness in the counselling process • Working within a coherent framework of counselling theory and skills • Working self-reflectively as a counsellor. Additional qualification requirements: Personal counselling – a minimum of 10 hours face to face personal therapy during the course. Note this is an additional costs not included in the course fee. Client work – a minimum of 100 hours formally-contracted counselling (one to one) with at least 5 different clients in an agency setting. Clinical Supervision – learners will require clinical supervision for their agency client work. In addition, candidates require 30 to 50 hours group training supervision as part of the course.

2 year part time Level 4 Diploma Start date: May/Septmeber 2022 Assessments: Students will be required to complete a range of different assessments over the duration of the course including an external assessment. Students also need to have completed a minimum number of hours of personal life coaching and a minimum requirement of hours formally contracted counselling.
Careers and further study: Upon successful completion, you will be able to provide a therapeutic counseling service – initially within the context of an agency’s service framework but later may progress to independent practice. You can also progress to complete a Level 5 in Therapeutic Counselling to be able to practice independently. Progression options include: • • •

Entry criteria: • Learners must be 19 years or older at enrolment. • Learners must hold evidence of having completed a Level 3 course in coaching, counselling or equivalent. • Learners must be able to evidence completion of Level 2 English and Maths. All candidates will be interviewed prior to offer of a place and will need to complete a fitness to study questionnaire. Please note this course is subject to validation. International applicants must satisfy the minimum English requirements as published on the College website and updated periodically (currently IELTS 6.0 or equivalent with minimum 5.5 in each of the four components). Mature students who do not meet the entry criteria are encouraged to apply and will be considered on the basis of relevant work experience, passing the course entrance assessment and successful interview.
