W
e had a great summer and hope you did too! Even though there are still a few weeks of summer left, our planning has turned to the fall months, and we have a few NEW programs and events for you to enjoy! Be sure to check out the upcoming Paws-A-Pool-Ooza event at Park Forest Pool in September, our Sip & Paint FUNdraiser also in September, our Dinner and a Movie event in October, and Friday Night Slides in December. Some of our more popular bicycle classes are back and we have several new fitness programs whether you like to exercise indoors or outdoors! Mark your calendars now for the 2nd Annual Winter Carnival! Also, the centerfold map contains the area’s bike paths as well as locations of the region’s neighborhood, community, and regional parks if you plan to get outside and explore this fall. You can also research all of our parks using the Find Your Parks tab on our website: www.crpr.org.

Centre Region Parks & Recreation Authority Each participating municipality (5) appoints one volunteer representative to serve a 5-year term on the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority, plus one representative of the State College Area School District is appointed by State College Borough Council. The Authority meets monthly on the third Thursday of each month at 12:15pm. During the winter, the meetings are held at the COG Building and in good weather, the Authority will meet at various parks. The schedule is posted on the COG website.

Bitty Ballet
Does your little one dance around the house to all kinds of music? Think they might enjoy trying some dance lessons? If so, Bitty Ballet may be the perfect option for your wee one! Bitty Ballet is a six-week preschool ballet program for 2.5-5 year olds. Bitty Ballet is the best way to introduce young children to dance and creative movement. We’re diving right in to the squishy, splashy, mucky, and messy projects that every child loves. These activities embrace a child’s delight in tactile experiences of finger (and toe!) painting, paper mache, slime making, plus seasonal favorites like pumpkin painting. CRPR is thrilled to offer again this learn-to-ride class for children ages 3-5 years old. This class teaches kids how to ride on two wheels. The curriculum is built around five 45-minute sessions of learning, fun, socialization, and instruction sure to ignite a passion for riding. Upon completion of the course, children will have the balance and bike handling skills to be on their way to riding on two wheels. NEW: CRPR is offering two registration options for this class.

Bike Commuting 101
Are you a recreational or mountain cyclist? Are you looking for a refresher course to help you feel more comfortable commuting by bike? If so, then this class is for you! Learn about the realities of bike commuting, traffic safety principles, layering and dealing with weather, what to wear so you don’t arrive at work a sweaty mess, what kind of gear you’ll need to haul a change of clothes or ride at night, how and where to lock your bike, and much more. Centre Region bike maps and a PA Bicycle Driver’s Manual will be provided. Please note: This is a classroom workshop; attendees do not need to bring a bike.

Do you want to start biking or feel more confident navigating local routes? Join us and learn more about the Centre Region’s bike paths/routes, PA and local laws, how to pick a bike, and other bikingaround-town tips. Get answers to your bike-related questions from regional planning staff and CentreBike members. Attendees will receive a copy of the PA Bicycle Driver’s Manual and an awesome bike pin. Smart Cycling
This League of American Cyclists certified class is designed for participants of all abilities who want to increase their comfort and confidence when cycling on busy streets. We start in the classroom, where we revisit the rules of the road including where to ride, basic traffic principles, safely changing lanes, avoiding common road hazards, and more. Then we move outside to work on skills and hazard avoidance drills in a traffic-free environment. To wrap up, we will go on a short (5 miles), open-road session to employ the strategies we just learned. Bring your own working bike and helmet (required). Youth Sports Girls Rhythmic Gymnastics
Start Smart Basketball
Start Smart Basketball, a parent and child participation program, teaches children the basic motor skills necessary to play organized basketball while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with a parent. The program focuses on teaching children and parents skills in dribbling/ball handling, passing/catching, shooting and running/agility without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Learn to Play Pickleball
Try something new in 2018! Pickleball is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is played both indoors and outdoors on a badminton-sized court or with a slightly modified tennis net. Participants use a paddle and a plastic ball with holes and the game can be played as doubles or singles. Join members of the local Pickleball League for basic instruction and lots of fun! All Ages Disc Golf Clinic
Join us at Circleville Park and learn to throw like the pros! This is a great opportunity to check out disc golf: how to play, different throwing types, rules of the game, and try out some of the best plastic out there! We’ll meet at the Circleville Disc Golf Course, at the pavilion next to Hole #1, and our amateur and pro players will teach you some basic skills. Once you’ve got a grip on the discs, we’ll practice some mid- and long-distance throws, and have you try your hand at putting. Once we’ve done that, we’ll play a few holes where you can ask questions of the instructors and see how they approach each hole and the various types of throws they use. The Puddle Jumpers program for preschoolers mixes outdoor exploration with fundamental learning through hands-on experiences at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center! This twice-a-week, dropoff program offers three-hour sessions of nature learning for kids ages 3-5, including unstructured,imaginative exploration, and structured, hands-on learning. Kids should bring a snack each day and dress for the weather. Each session is different, so sign-up for both! Wetland Senses Grades Preschool-K This program encourages children to fully experience the marsh by using their senses while learning and discovering. Four senses (no tasting) will be incorporated into fun, educational activities to get children exploring, touching, viewing, playing games, and more in a hands-on experiential way. This program is designed for Pre-school or Kindergarten groups, but can be adapted to first and second grade. This program may introduce topics in the following Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology categories: 4.1, 4.6 Integrated Pest Management Grades 3-8 This program is designed to introduce students to the concepts of Integrated Pest Management. Students will understand different types of pests and identify different methods to control specific pests. Students will also explore Millbrook Marsh, learn about the marsh as a natural filter, and understand how invasive species impact this precious ecosystem. This program is for third graders or higher. This program may introduce topics in the following Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology categories: 4.1, 4.5, 4.6

Marsh Exploration Grades 1-12 Why are wetlands so important? What is a watershed? Learn about the importance of wetlands and how they are natural filters. Explore the marsh and understand this important habitat, watersheds, and the area where we live. Participants will explore the marsh, learn about wetlands and their importance, study the stream and its creatures, understand the history of the area, and much more! (Activities may vary based on age.) This program may introduce topics in the following Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology categories: 4.1, 4.5, 4.6, & 4.7. (Wear water boots or shoes!)
Insect Safari Grades Preschool-5 This program guides children to explore the Marsh on an insect search and offers activities that teach about bug basics, special adaptations, insect eyes, and more about the bug world! (Wear water boots or shoes!) Beginning Birdwatching Grades 1-5 Learn about birds and their characteristics while exploring Millbrook Marsh. Also, begin learning the art of birdwatching with our pre-set course, before practicing on live birds! A great way to start out and begin learning about local birds.

Scouting Programs
Participants will complete activities and explorations specifically designed for Scout groups that meet all or some of the requirements for a badge, while exploring Millbrook Marsh Nature Center with a naturalist. Leaders can schedule a program just for your troop or gather several troops together. Fees: $7/scout.

Make your trip to Millbrook Marsh Nature Center memorable and informative. Our Naturalists have countless stories and information to share about the Number of Participants Fee Per Hour plants, wildlife, and history of the area. These “Walk 1-4 $30 with a Naturalist� options are available for all ages and 5-8 $55 are perfect for individuals, families, or small groups. 9-12 $75 Choose our basic Marsh Exploration program or customize your tour to focus on native plants, animals, wetland ecology, and many more interesting topics. Dinner and a Movie with CRPR!
Join us for Dinner and a Movie on our sports fields on Friday, October 19! That’s right, we’ve got the perfect setting for an outdoor movie with a view! Join us at Oak Hall Regional Park as we show the film “Field of Dreams,” rated PG (107 minutes). Our concession stand will be serving up some family-friendly dinner options or you can bring in your own picnic dinner! Gates will open at 5:45 PM and we’ll have some great yard games available before the movie--corn hole, Plinko, Kerplunk, and more! Movie will start at 7:00 PM, and the concession stand will remain open through intermission. Please dress for the nighttime temperatures and bring those sweatshirts, picnic blankets, picnic chairs, and maybe a flashlight for the walk back to your car. Admission is $10/car at the gate.

Friday Night Slides
It’s time to get those saucers, slides, sleds, skis, and snowboards ready! Friday Night Slides makes its debut on December 7 at Slab Cabin Park. Join CRPR for a fun night of downhill fun under the lights. We’ll have the campfires going along with some tasty snacks and music! We’ll have some organized sledding/sliding competitions and we even have a plan for some no-snow activities! Join us for some fun and maybe even a few surprises! Dress for the weather and night temperatures, and bring your favorite snow transportation!This event is open to all ages and is FREE! Please, all minors should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. CRPR Aquatic Program Policies
Classes fill quickly; registration for sequential classes cannot be guaranteed. • Please note that make-up sessions for all youth aquatic classes that are cancelled will be scheduled at the same time on the Friday following the cancelled class. • Classes are held as scheduled except during electrical storms and facility closings. • Only lesson participants are permitted on the pool deck areas. Springboard Diving
Learn to dive or refine your skills! This class will teach basic diving skills or help to improve the skills that you have. Instruction will cater to all levels of divers, teaching the basics to new divers and teaching more advanced skills to those with some experience. Youth Scholarships: Donating to our Youth Scholarship Program provides opportunities for economically-disadvantaged youth to attend summer camp, purchase a season pool pass, or attend a class/ program. Remembrance Programs: CRPR offers a Remembrance Tree, Gift Bench, and My Hero/My Veteran program as an option to memorialize family or friends or volunteers! CRPR works with the donor on the location and tree selection. Special Projects: CRPR also has several special projects on-going at this time such as the AllAbility and Universally-Accessible Playground at the Whitehall Road Regional Park. IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION GENERAL • Most programs have limited enrollment. Registration is accepted on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Registrations are processed in the order they are received at the CRPR office, and program/event fees must be paid at the time of registration. • How to read Program Fees: Resident Fee (R): For residents of State College Borough & the Twps. of College, Ferguson, Harris & Patton. Nonresident Fee (NR): For residents of all other municipalities. • No registrations or payments can be accepted by CRPR instructors, unless specific info. is provided within a program description. • CRPR reserves the right to adjust program meeting schedules, pending weather conditions and facility availability. REFUNDS • If a refund request is made at least 7 calendar days prior to the start of the program / camp week, a full refund (less a $5 processing fee) is provided for the program. • If a refund request is due to injury or illness after a program starts, a prorated refund is provided (a doctor’s excuse may be required). • If a program or class is canceled, a prorated refund or credit is provided.
