Welcome to Centre Region Parks & Recreation

W

e are very excited to be publishing the Summer 2021 Active Guide! This is the first time in our Agency's history that we have printed and mailed our Active Guide to over 36,000 residences in the Centre Region! This process makes it so much easier and faster for our customers to find this information and we hope to welcome many new participants this summer!

Our Agency has been weathering the pandemic rather well. We must THANK all of YOU who continued to support our programs and events in 2020-2021; once we had our COVID-19 safety protocols in place, we were able to offer some great late summer and fall programming and events, open the pools, and keep everyone safe and sound. We have updated protocols in place for 2021 and look forward to seeing people at our facilities and programs this year!

Our Parks Operations team is preparing for another busy summer in the community parks. They repaired, sanded, painted trash cans, benches, tables, and more over the winter months. They completed all preventative maintenance and made repairs to all maintenance equipment. They continued to check all parks throughout what was a very "wintery" winter, but they are now ready to switch to outdoor maintenance and bring all the parks online for our community.

In the meantime, we, like all of you, continue to monitor community health, protocols, research and science, while planning for our summer operations. We wish you all health and happiness this year and hope to see you in the parks, programs, or facilities this summer!

Balance bikes, like scooters, separate steering and balance from the skills of pedaling and braking. Right from the start, your child will learn how to maintain balance while being aware of their surroundings and, oh yeah, having an amazing time! Singletrack School for Girls - Level 2

Join our experienced instructors for this class, designed for middle-school girls who have mountain biking experience or have taken our Singletrack School for Girls beginner class. We will review basic bike handling and spend time riding the trails. We will meet at Suburban Park (first and second class) and Circleville Park (third class). Riders are required to bring their own mountain bike, helmet, and water. If you do not have access to a bike, we have a few available to loan. Contact the Agency or visit the website for more info.

Look at that face! Oh, the joy of mastering a balance bike! Your child can soon be balancing with the best of them. L'il Striders is full of games, activities and fun as little riders learn how to ride on two wheels. The curriculum is built around five 45-minute sessions. Let's Be Creative!

Lessons focus on teaching the building blocks of art for students to use to tap into their own thoughts, imaginations and personalities to develop their own style of art. Students will learn to appreciate new art styles through the study of prominent artists and their lives. Students will work with pencils, colored pencils, pens and watercolor. Students will use their originality and playfulness to complete multiple exercises, projects and discussions in each class. Harvest Fields Community Trails (HFCT) offer a place for the community to gather and enjoy the natural beauty of Central PA. These professionally designed and constructed trails provide a unique-to-theregion mountain biking experience for beginners and experienced riders.

This flag football league is for children going into grades 1st-7th, and is open to all skill levels with an emphasis on improving skills in a safe, competitive, player-focused environment. The league is committed to providing a positive football experience in a safety-first program through USA Football’s “Heads Up” Football Program. All coaches will be trained in “Heads Up” Football procedures and will be required to complete a Coaching Certification through USA Football. The league will also have USA Football certified Player Safety Coaches that are trained to ensure that “Heads Up” safety protocols Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Sundays, August 15-October 31 are respected. Practices will begin in mid-August at Spring Creek Park, then all practices and games will Rising 1st & 2nd Graders (5-9 yrs.) move to Oak Hall Regional Park. MLB Pitch, Hit & Run

Major League Baseball® Pitch Hit & Run™ (PHR) presented by MLB Network is a FREE, one-day event for boys (baseball) and girls (softball). Groups are split by ages. Participants have the opportunity to advance through three levels of competition: Locals, Team Championships and the Finals during the World Series™. Summer Tennis League

This semi-formal tennis league is designed to provide play for people with busy schedules. You will receive a season schedule, and you will have one week to play each match; this year's schedule includes additional makeup time to accommodate for vacations and weather cancellations. Matches can be played at any tennis court on the day/time that works best for the match players. You will be provided options for reporting scores regularly.

Everyone will be matched with someone with similar ability.

The regular season will open on June 7 and will end on August 15; there will be a season-ending tournament on Saturday, August 21, starting at 8:30am.

Each person that registers will be provided with one can of new tennis balls, which can be picked up at the parks and recreation office. Balls will be provided for the season-ending tournament as well.

Please use your computerized rating through the USTA to choose your playing level; if you are self-rating, please use the National Tennis Rating Guidelines to help you choose the best division.

Only one person from a doubles team has to register the team players.

If you don't have a partner, please use the program named "Requires Partner" within your desired division when registering and we will match you if possible.

Learn to Play Pickleball

Pickleball is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court or with a slightly modified tennis net. Participants use a paddle and a plastic ball with holes and the game can be played as doubles or singles. Join members of the local Pickleball League for basic instruction and lots of fun!

Nature Journaling

Nature Journaling is a fun and creative hobby that anyone can enjoy! Artistic ability is not required, you can capture and study nature in any way you wish. Join this outdoor, physically-distanced class to explore the basics of nature journaling and reconnect to nature. Your instructor will discuss choosing the journal you prefer and what materials to consider, choosing a good location, resources and journaling styles. We’ll also spend time in the marsh connecting with nature and enjoy getting started together. Masks are required when physical distancing is not possible. Minors attending a class without a guardian will be sent a health and safety form to complete and bring with them on the first day of class.

Scouting Programs

Participants will complete activities and explorations specifically designed for scout groups that meet all or some of the requirements for a badge, while exploring Millbrook Marsh Nature Center with a naturalist. Leaders can schedule a program just for your troop or gather several troops together.

Special Events Spring Bike Anywhere Friday

“Spring Bike Anywhere Friday” is an initiative that gets people pedaling. So ride your bike wherever you go: work, school, to eat, or just for fun on Friday, May 21, and after you complete your ride go to the Engage State College website to register to be entered in a drawing for a $50 Freeze Thaw gift card.

Calling all Girl Scouts! Centre Region Parks and Recreation and the State College Girl Scouts are excited to combine efforts for this first-time event! Gather your team of family or friends, receive your first clue, and head out to the parks to tackle various challenges by solving puzzles, cyphers, letterboxing, and more! At each stop you will have the opportunity to complete steps towards the following badges: • Daisy/Between Earth & Sky Journey Clover Badge • Brownie/Letterbox Badge NEW! • Cadette/Science of Trees Badge • Juniors/Geocaching Badge • Seniors/Art Expert Badge • Ambassadors/Art Master Badge • This event will also qualify for the Keystone 10M Trees Badge.

A Glowing Tribute

Honor or remember your friends, family and beloved animals with candle-lit luminaries on the Millbrook Marsh boardwalk during this special two-night event, June 11-12, 9-10:30 PM. Each $25 donation includes one luminary and the option to have a loved one's name displayed on the event's Tribute Board and web page. Held during peak firefly season, registrants and up to four guests are invited to an evening at Millbrook Marsh to walk the candle-lit luminary appreciation trail. Donations will be accepted through Friday, June 4 and can be made at www.

Outdoor Movies In The Park

Centre Region Parks and Recreation and WPSU are teaming up again to bring you FREE Outdoor Movies in the Park! With a variety of fabulous PBS and Nature productions, there will be something for everyone!

Movies will be shown on the inflatable outdoor screen with fabulous sound in the beautiful location of Tudek Park. Physical distancing will be enforced by using marked circles, 6 ft. apart in the grass. Please register once per family/group of 4 people. Each circle can only hold four; if you have more than four people in your family, you will need two registrations and two circles. Movie info. will be available soon!

Movies will be shown on the following dates, starting at dusk, with seating opening at 8 PM: Second and fourth Thursdays, June 10 and 24, July 8 and 22, and August 19.

Touch a Truck Event

Touch-A-Truck is a fun-filled event for kids to get up close and explore the vehicles they’ve seen in movies, books, and around town. From fire trucks and ambulances to backhoes and bulldozers, this event has them all!

In addition to being a family-friendly, FREE event, patrons will have a chance to meet first responders and other professionals in a safe, positive environment. All safety protocols will be followed. Registration will be required in 45 min. increments. Join us on Sat., June 26 at the State College Alliance Church parking lot, from 10 AM-1 PM. More details will be available soon on our website!

Annual CRPR Kids on Wheels Parade

Once again, the Kids on Wheels Parade is a registration-required event! The Agency is limiting the parade to the first 250 registrations! Please register everyone who will be participating. On the day of the event, please check-in with a CRPR Volunteer at the line-up site on Foster Ave., between Locust Lane and Garner St. We recommend you access the site at Locust Lane. Line-up begins at 9:30 AM and we step off for the parade at 10 AM. The parade moves down Foster Ave and disburses at Sidney Friedman Park. State College Borough ordinances require participants to wear masks...maybe have them match your decorated wheels!

Welch Pool Cardboard Regatta

SPECIAL EVENTS

Let us help you prepare for the Annual Kids on Wheels Parade. Centre Region Parks and Recreation staff will be on site at the Lower Pavilion at Holmes-Foster Park to hand out red, white, and blue streamers. Parade participants can use the streamers to decorate their bikes, trikes, scooters, or strollers for the parade the next morning.

Please wear your mask when picking up your kits and make sure you register for the parade!

Build your own boat, and race it at Welch! Boats must be made from cardboard, paperboard, and duct tape ONLY (colored duct tape is OK for decoration). Boats may be a maximum of 7’ long and 4’ wide. Paddles/propulsion must also be homemade using same materials or use your hands/ feet. Race course will be one length of the pool or 25 yards.

Racers will be divided by division/category and may be separated into heats, depending on entries.

AWARDS: 1st place in each division for the fastest boat, best overall boat design, best overall costumes, and “The Titanic Award” for the most spectacular sinking!

We will host pre-judging at 8:30 AM (all entries must be present) and the races will begin thereafter. Costumes must be pool/swimmer safe.

Lifeguards will be on duty. Deadline to register all boats: Friday, July 16 at 12 PM.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Pedal, Splash & Dash Youth Triathlon

This annual event is open to youth, 6-13 yrs., with varying distances! Swimming will take place at Welch Pool; the bike portion will use the bike path from Welch Pool to Blue Course Drive, and the run will be held on the SCAHS field above the pool. Participants must be equipped with appropriate swim wear, their own bicycle and helmet, and running shoes or sneakers. Parents/guardians should be present to assist their children with event transitions. Event will be held rain or shine; cancellation with full refund only in the event of thunder/lightning. Participants who register prior to Wednesday, July 14 will receive an event T-shirt!

The events break-down as follows:

•Ages 12-13: event includes a 200-yard swim, a 4-mile bike, and 1-mile run. Start: 8 AM

• Please note that make-up sessions for all youth aquatic classes that are cancelled will be scheduled at the same time on the Friday following the cancelled class.

Summer Swim Team

This competitive program, for ages 5-18, is offered at Welch and Park Forest Community Pools, Monday-Friday, June 7-July 30. Summer Swim Team teaches teamwork, cooperation, and healthy competition. Both teams are members of the Central Pennsylvania Swim League (CPSL), which holds meets on weekday evenings.

Swimmers must participate in two meets to be eligible to compete in the CPSL championship. Swimmers MUST be registered before they participate in any practices or meets. More swim team info. on our website.

Discover SCUBA

AQUATICS

This course teaches the skills and provides the knowledge necessary to become a professional lifeguard.

Candidates must be 15 years of age (by the last day of class) and pass a swimming skills pretest.

Successful candidates receive certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Candidates must register and pay prior to taking the pretest. A refund is provided if the candidate does not pass the pretest, less a $5 admin fee. Please note: This course will require students to complete approximately seven (7) hours of on-line coursework prior to the course completion date. The skills pre-test will be on Thursday, May 6 at 4 PM and will include: a 300 yard swim; two minutes treading water using only legs; and retrieval of a 10 lb. brick in 10' deep water.

Additionally, if a candidate successfully passes this course and becomes a CRPR lifeguard, CRPR will refund 50% of the class fees if the candidate stays for the entire 2021 season.

Have you ever wanted to try SCUBA? Here's your chance! There is nothing like breathing underwater for the very first time. The class will include instruction on safety, equipment selection and use, and time to experiment and play with underwater games and exploration. Try it out! Half-hour time slots start at 8, 8:30, 9 and 9:30 AM!

Seal Team Youth SCUBA The PADI Seal Team is for young scuba divers who are looking for actionpacked fun by completing exciting AquaMissions. PADI Seal Team includes doing some cool stuff in the pool, meeting friends, and sharing underwater world adventures.

AquaMissions 1-5 cover basic scuba diving skills: breathing underwater, clearing a mask of water, recovering a regulator, and swimming around while experiencing the sensation of being weightless.

Each in-water session takes about an hour.

After the diver completes these AquaMissions they will become a recognized PADI SealTeam Member. Your experience may also count toward the PADI Open Water Diver course when you’re old enough.

Bubble Makers Youth SCUBA

The Bubblemaker program is a chance to blow bubbles by scuba diving. Children can use scuba gear to breathe and swim underwater in the shallows. Participants get a basic introduction on how to use scuba gear, how to clear a regulator/mask, and an overview of underwater breathing do’s and don’ts.

The Bubblemaker CrewPak contains mementos of the experience and is full of fun surprises, like a kid-sized beach towel, logbook, temporary tattoo, and more!

ACTIVE ADULT CENTER COVID-19 UPDATE By now, all of us are well versed in COVID-19 and its effects on area businesses, parks and recreation activities, facilities, programs, and so much more!

The Active Adult Center staff are excited to welcome you to our Center inside the Nittany Mall! With a wide variety of activities for active adults, ages 55+, it is the perfect place for your recreation, education, and social needs! A print and online calendar of events are available to keep participants informed of exciting Center happenings! Stop by, say hello, and check out our latest opportunities!

However, we are happy to announce that we have reopened AGAIN, after a long closure over the holidays and the winter months. Our 2nd re-opening, exciting no doubt, remains very limited as we ensure that our COVID-19 safety plans are working for all of our participants and our staff.

We are currently open on most Wednesdays for in-person programming and on Fridays for outings only (meeting at the outing site; the Center is not open).

For the single day we are open and in-person, we are offering a meal program, very limited group programming, and we will have COVID-19 safety protocols in place for each activity we schedule. The best way to get that schedule information will be to check our website pages (https:// www.crpr.org/active-adult-center) or to call the Center directly at 814-231-3076. As we get further into the state's vaccination efforts and the Governor continues to lift restrictions, we hope to announce a return to more normal activity levels.

In the meantime, please check out the programs that are tentatively scheduled for April-August, and we'll update the Active Guide as more information becomes available. You can also find our monthly calendar on our website using the link above.

Zumbini is an early childhood education program for children, 0-4 yrs., and their caregivers. The mission of the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority is to serve Centre Region residents of all ages throughout the year with a variety of recreation opportunities and access to facilities to enrich their lives through participation in programs, facility use, provision of leadership resources and technical assistance, and serving the participating municipalities' residents and groups.

The Authority membership includes five municipalities--the Borough of State College and the Townships of College, Ferguson, Harris, and Patton, and the State College Area School District. Each municipality appoints one volunteer representative to serve a five-year term, plus one representative from the State College Area School District who is appointed by State College Borough Council. In October 2011, the five participating municipalities re-authorized the future of the Authority for January 2012 through December 2061.

Many members of the Authority also participate in their municipality's Parks and Recreation Committee; this dual service provides a great conduit between the Authority/Agency and the municipality like Capital Improvement Projects, timelines of various park improvements, recommended programming for the community, policies and procedures, and more.

The Authority is a registered 501c3 non-profit and registered as a PA Bureau of Charitable Giving organization.
