Meet Our Team

t’s about impossible to know what to write in this brief column. All of humanity is struggling during this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic! For all of us, there was daily changes, almost hourly at times, as we learned more about the virus and how it was going to impact our work and our personal lives. Keeping focused on providing news, updates, projects, resources, and more kept most of us busy, and focused outwardly during this time, which helped us work through our fears and worries. However, we’ve gotten back to work, although, our maintenance team never stopped working, and we’re refocusing our 2020 plans. We certainly hope to offer some normalcy in 2020 while creating new options for children and families. The summer programs, pool time, summer camps, and farm fresh tomatoes and watermelon will be back! Once our patrons feel ready to join us for some programming options, we’d like to remind you that we did change our registration software back in February. We believe the registration process should be easier and faster for our patrons. We’ve extended our deadline for the Resident Pool Pass Discount through August 31, 2020. Please take advantage of this savings since our pools will be opening soon! We hope to see you at a park, event, or program this summer. Be safe and well!

Have you always wanted to learn how to play Kick The Can? What you need to play:

empty can, large game area, group of kids

Object of the game:

played like hide-and-seek only players kick a can to avoid being caught

Set up the game:

place the empty can in a large open area, and choose who will be “it." Designate a spot near the can to be the “jail."

How to Play: “It” counts to 50 while the other kids hide. “It” then goes and tries to find the hidden players. When “it” sees a player they call the players name and location. Then both “it” and the player who has been caught race to the can and try to be the first one to kick it. If “it” kicks the can first then the player goes to the “jail”. If the player kicks the can first then they and all the prisoners in the jail are free and “it” must count again. If “it” catches all the players then a new game starts with a new “it."

Add Flashlight Tag To Your Neighborhood Games Requires:

At least 3 people, but more people make for more fun A flashlight

Game play: Like the original version of Tag, the game is to evade the tag of the player who is designated It. The only catch is that this game is played at night and being tagged means getting lit up by a flashlight. The game begins with a Hide-and-Seek element: one player selected as It counts to a predetermined number while the rest of the players hide. Armed with only a flashlight, It heads into the dark in search of the hidden players. Players are tagged when the flashlight beams on them, at which point they become It, or are simply out until the rest of the players are found. Are you afraid of the dark? Playing this game requires a lot of darkness, but if that’s a bit too scary for the young ones, play during dusk hours.

Bubble Makers Youth SCUBA

The PADI Seal Team is for young scuba divers who are looking for action-packed fun by completing exciting AquaMissions. PADI Seal Team includes doing some cool stuff in the pool, meeting friends and sharing underwater world adventures. AquaMissions 1-5 cover basic scuba diving skills: breathing underwater, clearing a mask of water, recovering a regulator, and swimming around while experiencing the sensation of being weightless. Each in-water session takes about an hour. After the diver completes these AquaMissions they will become a recognized PADI SealTeam Member. Your experience may also count toward the PADI Open Water Diver course when you’re old enough.

The Bubblemaker program is a chance to blow bubbles by scuba diving. Children can use scuba gear to breathe and swim underwater in the shallows. Participants get a basic introduction on how to use scuba gear, how to clear a regulator/mask, and an overview of underwater breathing do’s and don’ts. The Bubblemaker Crew-Pak contains mementos of the experience and is full of fun surprises, like a kid-sized beach towel, logbook, temporary tattoo, and more!

Aquatics Games

Have your own backyard pool?

Here are some fun and traditional pool games to play! SHARKS AND MINNOWS

There are rule variations about when a minnow can be tagged. In one version, a minnow cannot be tagged if submerged fully under the water. In that case, the shark can either wait for the minnow to surface for a breath, or the shark can try to coerce the minnow to the surface to make the tag.

AQUATICS

In its most basic form, sharks and minnows is a game of water tag. The game starts with one shark and several minnows. The shark lurks in one end (or the middle) of the pool. The minnows stand at the other end. When the shark yells "Minnows in!" or a similar phrase, the minnows jump or dive into the pool and try to swim to the other side without getting tagged by the shark. Every minnow the shark tags joins the shark's team and helps to tag other minnows. The last minnow becomes the first shark in the next round.

DOLPHIN RACE

This is another classic pool game that doesn't require any special props or toys. The object of the dolphin game is simple: try to swim the farthest distance underwater. Two or more people begin on one side of the pool. On the count of three, they submerge, kick off from the wall and try to swim all the way to the other side without taking a breath. Strong swimmers can do a flip turn on the opposite wall and attempt to swim back. The person who swims the farthest without taking a breath is the winner. Please use caution when playing any game that requires swimmers to hold their breath, and take generous breaks between races. Adult supervision is always recommended when young people are playing in a pool.

SQUIRT GUN RACES

Craft a squirt gun obstacle course race through your backyard and pool, and watch your kids race to the finish line! Supplies needed include sturdy string, duct tape, plastic cups, scissors, and squirt guns! Place holes in the cups using scissors or a screw driver or drill. Be careful not to cut yourself. You can create race from one end of the pool to the other, or create multiple stages. Tie one end of your string around something sturdy (balcony post or deck post). Thread the string through two cups, and then tie off your string off on another sturdy item. You can also create multiple stages; just wrap your string around a sturdy item, add two more cups (one to each string), and repeat that action for as many stages as you'd like.

DUCK PUSH Give each player a rubber duck. On "go," they must push the duck to the other end of the pool using only their nose. On your mark, get set, race!

ACTIVE ADULT CENTER COVID-19 UPDATE By now, all of us are well versed in COVID-19 and its effects on area businesses, parks and recreation activities, facilities, and programs, and so much more! We certainly miss seeing you every day at the Center, but must share with you that despite Centre County moving to the Governor's Green Status on Friday, May 29, the Center will not be reopening at that time. Because we offer a meal program, group programming, and utilize a myriad of supplies, equipment, games, and more, we must wait a bit longer for guidance from the PA Department of Aging as they set re-opening protocols for all senior centers across the state. So, bear with us a bit longer while we figure out how our programs will work, what meals will look like, if we have to reduce capacity to meet certain guidelines, etc. We want to keep all of you safe and healthy, and we won't open without having those protocols in place as well as have the PA Department of Aging and the Centre County Office of Aging in approval of the opening. In the meantime, please check out the programs that are tentatively scheduled for the midsummer months, and we'll update the Active Guide as more inforamtion becomes available. Thank you, stay safe, and be well! Cindy, Lu, and Kathi Centre Region Active Adult Center
