new year always brings new changes! As we publish the Winter/Spring 2020 Active Guide, we’d like to remind everyone that our main office moved in November to a new location. We are still on the west side of town, but we are now located at 2040 Sandy Drive in Suite A. Be sure to stop by and see us in our new space during our Open House on Friday, December 6, from 11 AM-1 PM.

Additionally, the Agency is very excited to announce that we will be changing our registration software in the new year. This change will give the Agency a chance to clean the database and restructure the system. Our new software will be user-friendly and should make registering much more simple.

We will be in touch soon with those who currently have a household in our database about how you can help us during this transition.

Please be sure to mark your calendar for February 29, 2020. Yes, it’s a leap year and we’re celebrating the day with our 3rd Annual Winter Carnival! We have some special new activities planned and you won’t want to miss them!

Lastly, this brochure is chock full of fun activities for the winter and spring months, and we certainly hope to see you at one of our programs, events, or facilities! Happy New Year!

Each participating municipality (5) appoints one volunteer representative to serve a five-year term on the Centre Region Parks & Recreation Authority, plus one representative of the State College Area School District is appointed by State College Borough Council.

The Authority meets monthly on the third Thursday of each month at 12:15 PM. During the winter, the meetings are held at the COG Building and in good weather, the Authority will meet at various parks. The schedule is posted on the COG website if you’d like to join us! You can also find videos of the Authority meetings on C-NET. The cross-country ski months are here again. This year, head out to Circleville Park and Haugh Tract Preserve to take advantage of the groomed trails, thanks in part to Patton Township Staff and the Nittany Nordic Cross Country Ski Club volunteers.

Bitty Ballet

Does your little one dance around the house and to all kinds of music? Think they might enjoy trying some dance lessons? If so, Bitty Ballet may be the perfect option for your wee one! Bitty Ballet is a six-week preschool ballet program for 2.5-5 year olds and is the best way to introduce young children to dance and creative movement. Through a grant from Strider Balance Bikes, CRPR is thrilled to offer once again this learn-to-ride class for children ages 3-5 years old. This class teaches kids how to ride on two wheels. The curriculum is built around five 45-minute sessions of learning, fun, socialization, and instruction sure to ignite a passion for riding. Upon completion of the course, children will have the balance and bike handling skills to be on their way to riding on two wheels. Bikes are included for class use. Instructor: Beth Lee

Biking in the Centre Region 101

Do you want to start biking or feel more confident navigating local routes? Join us and learn more about the Centre Region’s bike paths/routes, PA & local laws, how to pick a bike, and other bikingaround-town tips. Get answers to your bike-related questions from regional planning staff and CentreBike members. Attendees will receive a copy of the PA Bicycle Driver’s Manual and an awesome bike pin. Please Note: this is a classroom workshop so attendees do not need to bring a bike.

A Walk With Grief

A Walk With Grief is not an exercise program but instead a time of coming together with others who are grieving a loss and...walking. Walking to move grief from the inside to the outside.

Walking to benefit from physical activity.

Walking to connect with the healing aspects of nature. And walking to know you’re not alone.

You can speak and share with others, or you can move about in silence. The important thing is to show-up. Sessions will be one hour and held at different parks in our community. Vegan Cooking Series

In this four-session series of cooking classes, we'll explore in partnership with Webster's Bookstore Cafe some basic techniques of preparing plant-based meals, focusing on these concepts: filling your plate with hearty, real foods that taste delicious; recipes that can help you make the switch to plant-based meals; and understanding the wide range of foods available to eat! Cloth wax food wraps are easy to use: flexible, water resistant, airtight and reusable. They are a great way to reduce your plastic use. In this class you will learn how to make and care for these wraps. We provide a selection of fabrics for your cloth along with all necessary tools. In each class you will make four wraps of varying sizes. Parking validation provided.

Summer Camps Preview In this section is a preview of some of our 2020 Summer Camps. Several more camp programs are in the works like yoga, archery, Leaders In Training, and the updated Rec On The Go Camp, but they are not quite ready for publication yet! All camps and corresponding details will be available on our website by January 27, 2020. Summer Camp registration will open on February 3rd and a complete camp list will be available in our Summer Active Guide, published on April 9

KIDVenture Camps

Camp Dates: Mondays-Fridays, June 15-August 7

(Camp will most likely start on a Wednesday during the first week to accommodate the SCASD Snow Day calendar.)

KIDVenture Explorers: rising 1st-3rd graders 9 AM-4 PM, Park Forest Middle School Send your kids off on all sorts of explorations this summer by enrolling them in the KIDVenture Explorers Camp! Explorers will have the opportunity to make a splash at Park Forest Pool, take field trips to some awesome places, be creative with various arts and crafts, play games galore, and so much more! All with our highly-trained staff and without spending a night away from home! Please check our website for updates on weekly themes and field trips.

KIDventure Challengers: rising 4th-5th graders 9 AM-4 PM, Park Forest Middle School This camp lets your camper experience a summer like no other with our highly-qualified staff, who will be prepared with a world of adventures, challenges, and a whole lot of FUN! Camp will have a separate Challengers schedule and some separate field trips. Please check the website for updates on weekly themes and field trips.

Back again in 2020 are the optional "Extended Hours" for an additional fee.

Broadway Camp “The Muppets”

This exciting Musical Theatre camp will feature your favorite songs from THE MUPPETS. In order to save the Muppet Theater from destruction, Kermit and the old gang reunite for one last show! Vocal, acting, and dance lessons will be enhanced by fun theatre games and activities. On the last day of camp, family and friends will be amazed by a performance of hit songs from a medley arranged by Roger Emerson. This camp is for kids who love to sing, and for kids who want to try it out!

Kayak Camp

Great for first-time boaters or those who wish to strengthen their technique. Camp begins by learning the equipment basics; life jackets, parts of the kayak and paddle. Campers develop and practice the various kinds of paddle strokes and fundamentals of safe boat handling on flat water, and then venture out to explore local waterways.

Kayak Excursion Camp

Come explore local waterways and improve your kayaking skills during this adventurous camp.

Teens who have previously attended a Millbrook Marsh Kayak Camp or an equivalent course and demonstrate advanced paddling skills qualify for this camp. To enroll please call the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center at (814) 235-7819. Registration opens February 3.

Fly Fishing Camp

Centre County has some of the best trout streams in the world! Campers learn the life-long hobby of fly fishing with hands-on instruction from patient, fly fishers while fishing local ponds and world-renowned streams. Casting, stream reading and stream ethics are just a few of the techniques campers learn throughout the week. Rods and reels are provided for use during camp. Campers should dress for the weather, bring protective eyewear (sunglasses) and pack a snack and water bottle. A swim safety evaluation will be scheduled for all campers prior to the start of camp. Each participant will receive a one-year Trout Unlimited membership at no additional coast thanks to the Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

For the young adventurer who is excited about getting hands-on with nature! Come to Millbrook Marsh to discover wonders of the outdoors through leader-led activities, games, songs, and unstructured nature play. Children will explore the marsh and learn about some of the animals and plants that inhabit the wetland ecosystem. Please dress for the weather and plan to get messy! Must be potty trained. All camps run 9 AM-12 PM, are for 3-5 yr. olds, and are held at the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center. Camp fees are $145R / $220 NR, and are the same for all three camps.

Wonderful Wetlands Camp

This action-packed, exciting camp offers nature exploration and hands-on learning mixed with fun games, creative crafts, and recreational activities all while learning about wetlands and the natural world. Children should dress for the weather. Extended hours include quiet activities such as board games, crafts and a book nook from 8- 9 AM and recreation activities and crafts from 4-5 PM. Learn how to turn your kitchen and yard waste into black gold. Backyard composting is an easy, inexpensive and natural process that transforms your kitchen and garden waste into a valuable, nutrient-rich food for your garden while keeping these organic wastes out of our landfills. Learn the basics of backyard composting: why it’s important to compost, what to add and not to add, how to maintain a compost pile, and how to use finished compost. Attendees will receive an Earth Machine composter compliments of Centre Region COG’s Refuse and Recycling Program.

Why are wetlands so important? What is a watershed? Learn about the importance of wetlands and how they are natural filters. Explore the marsh and understand this important habitat, watersheds, and the area where we live. Participants will explore the marsh, learn about wetlands and their importance, study the stream and its creatures, understand the history of the area, and much more! (Activities may vary based on age.) This program may introduce topics in the following Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology categories: 4.1, 4.5, 4.6, & 4.7. (Wear water boots or shoes!)

This program encourages children to fully experience the marsh by using their senses while learning and discovering. Four senses (no tasting) will be incorporated into fun, educational activities to get children exploring, touching, viewing, playing games, and more in a hands-on experiential way. Lifeguarding (American Red Cross Certification)

This course teaches the skills and provides the knowledge necessary to become a professional lifeguard. Candidates must be 15 years of age (by the last day of class) and pass a swimming skills pretest. Successful candidates receive certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Candidates must register and pay prior to taking the pretest. A refund is provided if the candidate does not pass the pretest, less a $5 admin fee. PLEASE NOTE: This course will require students to complete approximately seven (7) hours of on-line coursework prior to the course completion date. The deadline to register for this program is April 3.

The skills pre-test will be on Wednesday April 8 at 5 PM and will include: 300 yard swim, 2 minutes treading water using only legs, and retrieval of 10 lb. brick in 10 feet deep water.

If a candidate successfully passes this course and becomes a CRPR lifeguard and works the entire 2020 season, CRPR will refund 50% of the class fees to that candidate!

Line dancing is a fun and interactive exercise class set to music. CRPR’s New to You Yoga class offers an introduction to yoga, teaching an enhanced self-awareness through breathing techniques, yoga postures, and relaxation. This is a dynamic yoga class, connecting breath with movement, increasing strength, flexibility, and balance. This is an ideal class both for beginners and experienced yogis looking to refine their practice.

Come and learn basic yoga breathing and postures and how to live “yoga” both on and off the mat. Please bring a yoga mat.

Step Interval Cardio & Weight Training

Challenge your cardiovascular system in this low impact, high intensity cardio workout while increasing your muscle mass with intervals of weights targeting the upper body. Class will incorporate exercise steps and weights to increase your cardio endurance and tone, strengthen your muscles. The class ends with an ab workout and stretch cool down. Participants work at their own intensity level. Steps and weights provided.

Come to Millbrook Marsh this Spring and watch the season change from week-to-week.

As you do yoga in various locations throughout the park, you'll center and learn to listen to your breath. Yoga and nature are a perfect blend for deep peace and relaxation. Yoga experience for every level.

Wear comfy clothes, bring a water bottle and blanket for shivasana, the last pose of the evening done while listening to night sounds. An incredible way to tune into yourself as part of nature.

IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION GENERAL • Most programs have limited enrollment. Registration is accepted on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Registrations are processed in the order they are received at the CRPR office, and program/event fees must be paid at the time of registration.

• How to read Program Fees: Resident Fee (R): For residents of State College Borough & the Twps. of College, Ferguson, Harris & Patton.

Nonresident Fee (NR): For residents of all other municipalities.

• No registrations or payments can be accepted by CRPR instructors, unless specific info. is provided within a program description.

• CRPR reserves the right to adjust program meeting schedules, pending weather conditions and facility availability.

REFUNDS • If a refund request is made at least 7 calendar days prior to the start of the program / camp week, a full refund (less a $5 processing fee) is provided for the program.

• If a refund request is due to injury or illness after a program starts, a prorated refund is provided (a doctor’s excuse may be required).

• If a program or class is canceled, a prorated refund or credit is provided.
