On the cover: Evan, age 10, loves to read stories about trains, plants, and mythology. The library keeps him supplied with audiobooks like Percy Jackson for bedtime. His brother Ethan, age 7, loves most any books, especially if they involve bowling or hedgehogs. They are both enthusiastic customers of the Headquarters Library. Evan says the best thing about the library is they have lots of books and audios for him and his brother to take home. Ethan says the worst thing about the library is that he can’t keep all the books forever.

welcome

DONNA COTE n DIRECTOR

What will I read next? It’s a question that every reader savors, but it can be challenging to choose the next good book when there are so many to choose from. The CRRL is here to help with recommendations and ways to share your favorites.

As you’ll see throughout the pages of this issue, summertime at the library means not just reading, but also sharing what you’ve read with other avid readers. On our Facebook page, What Are You Reading? Wednesday invites you to post your current reading and see what others have on their bedside tables. Our booklists for all ages, available online and in our libraries, offer plenty of recommendations for readers of all interests. You can even email a librarian through our Book Match service for kids, teens and adults and get a recommendation geared to your exact needs (just visit librarypoint.org and click on Reading Room). Or simply ask your favorite librarian for a suggestion the next time you’re in the library. Librarians love nothing more than talking about books with our customers. Our Summer Reading Club for kids, teens and adults offers an easy way to track your reading, share your favorites, and discover new books, movies and audiobooks. It’s also a terrific way to encourage children and teens to continue reading while school is out, keeping up their skills so

Summer 2014

they don’t suffer the summer learning loss that non-readers can experience. You can post book reviews online for others to enjoy, and browse the suggestions to find your next favorite book. All this, and prizes, too! (See page 5.) Summer brings more time to read, but it also finds lots of us on the road. You can tuck the CRRL in your pocket while you travel - even if your travel is just your regular commute. Using the CRRL’s mobile app for smartphones and tablets, you can place holds, manage your account, and download eBooks and eAudios, no matter where you are. (See page 22.) You can access our language learning service, Mango Languages, and learn French or any of 56 other languages before you travel. (See page 27.) All these services are available on your computer as well, and library staff would be delighted to show you how to get the most out of each one.

This summer, make your reading about fun AND convenience. No matter where your summer adventures take you, keep reading and sharing your favorites all summer long.

getting to know the library If you’re looking for Children’s Librarian Jo-Ann Lawson, don’t expect to find her at her desk. Jo-Ann goes out to child care centers in our area every day to teach early literacy classes through the CRRL’s Grow a Reader with your Library initiative. Jo-Ann’s love of books and her expertise with early literacy skills make her a welcome visitor in dozens of child care classrooms and family homes. What was your first library job? In the mid-’70s I conducted storytimes for the CRRL on what was then called the Story Van. The van went out to Westmoreland County at a time before the county had library buildings. What other jobs have you held at the CRRL? I did a one-year stint at the Adult Research Desk in the ‘80s, and start-

ing in 1986 I worked at the Children’s Research Desk and conducted storytimes at Headquarters. How did you get involved with the Grow a Reader initiative? The CRRL’s outreach to child care programs, originally called LEEP (Library Experiences Especially for Preschoolers), was launched as a pilot project in 1992. Soon after that, I became the LEEP Librarian, and later the Grow a Reader Librarian. What else does the Grow a Reader initiative offer to child care programs? In addition to storytime classes, I offer literacy workshops for child care staff and parents and promote the Summer Reading Club to school-age children. The Winter Reading program is a special program for preschool

on the web One of the best-kept secrets of savvy CRRL customers is a free subscription to the weekly newsletter called Wowbrary. Sent out each Wednesday morning, this newsletter links to materials added to the library catalog in the past week, including new and on-order materials, items being replaced or ordered by customer request, and eBooks and eAudio.

Signing up for Wowbrary is quick and easy through librarypoint.org/wowbrary. In the Wowbrary newsletter, you’ll find This Week’s Top Choices, Biographies & Memoirs, Health, Mind & Body, Literature & Fiction, Kids, Teens, and much more. Each item comes with a brief description and the option to learn more on Amazon.com, or visit the library’s catalog to place a hold. Tips & Tricks: • Each category page has a drop-down at the top so you can exclude or focus on electronic items, depending on how you like to read. • Some books have a “Google Preview” button by the title, so you can read the first several pages.

Family Summer Vacation

with Audiobooks and eBooks

by Cable B., age 14 When my family went on summer vacation to the great West, we saw the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. And thousands of miles of roads! I would have gone nuts except for my stash in the back seat. My backpack was full of audiobooks on CD and, as long as the batteries in my

player held out, I could listen to them for hours as we drove across the country. And when we got to hotels, I used the Wifi to load new books on my Kindle from the library website. Long family trips can be a drag sometimes, but as long as we can take the library on the road, I think I can survive another one.

1. Hank does not like to browse on the bottom floor. 2. Fred is in the room directly above Jessie and directly next to Brian (who is studying in the west wing). 3. Ellie is using a computer in the east wing and is one floor higher than Fred. 4. Daniel is doing research in the room directly above Fred. 5. Gloria is browsing DVDs in the room directly above Cadie.

Video games often get a bad rap for being violent, loud, and brain-numbing, but recent studies have shown a lot of benefits to such activities. As games have grown in sophistication, research has shown players’ increases in several key areas. Cognitive Ability: Making split second decisions under pressure. First person shooters are the best at building this skill. Spatial Orientation: Being able to visualize a three-dimensional space, as well as increased hand-eye coordination. Problem Solving Skills: Many games involve solving puzzles or overcoming obstacles in order to advance further in the story. Socialization: With the rise of Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs), players can now communicate, form strategies, and work together to achieve their goals. Empathy: Some game developers are even looking for ways to engage a player on an emotional level, allowing them to gain insight and empathy for others through storytelling.

BELIEVE WRITE SHARE

Who Have Made Up Their Minds

A community project based on This I Believe®

A BOOK LIST

Sponsored by The Central Rappahannock Regional Library and Water Street Studio

What do you BELIEVE? Write, share, and learn more about individual community members and core values that guide our daily lives through participation in our Believe Write Share project, inspired by the international organization This I Believe. How to Participate Spend some time thinking about what matters to you. Find a moment that illustrates that belief, then compose a brief essay. Consider the following: • Tell a story. Be specific. • Be brief. Your statement should be between 350 and 500 words. • Name your belief. If you can’t name it in a sentence or two, your essay might not be about a belief. Write in first person. • Learn more. Visit the website thisibelieve.org to read or listen to sample essays. • Read This I Believe: Life Lessons or This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women, available at your library! How to Submit You can either drop your essay by any of the branches or use the following online link to upload your essay to the library’s website: librarypoint.org/thisibelieve

A Southern woman has manners; she is never rude. A Southern woman can cook rings around you or anyone else for that matter, and has a tried and true cure for just about anything that ails you. A Southern woman can make do. She has an inherent sense of place and self awareness. And every Southern woman is born with a backbone of steel.

What MATTERS to you? By submitting your essay you agree to grant the Central Rappahannock Regional Library the right to publish, reproduce, exhibit, and/or

So make no mistake—once a Southern woman has made up her mind, then the earth will move, the waters will part, the winds will blow and you’d best just take a step back.
