welcome

DONNA COTE n DIRECTOR

Here’s hoping that you and your family enjoyed a summer filled with reading, watching and listening at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library! As of press time, you still have a month left to join the summer reading club, ask your librarian for just the right book, or post a photo of what you’re reading on social media using #crrlsummerlove.

We’re back to our fall routines in just a few weeks, and the Central Rappahannock Regional Library has just what you need to make your re-entry go smoothly. Students can head directly for the Homework Help page on our website to find free online tutoring available seven days a week. This page also highlights our online research resources as well as our award-winning Homework Help articles. Whether it’s medieval history, how electricity works, or how a bill becomes a law, these short articles are filled with resources that will help students of all ages get that assignment in on time. Check out the article on page 5 for more about these and other homework help resources. Business folks will find tools at the library to help start or maintain a business, whether it’s doing demographic research, booking a free meeting room, or faxing, copying or printing documents. Library classes and events can help, too - check out the organizing program at Salem Church

on October 8 or any of our Training on Demand classes where you can learn about the latest technology. Spotsylvania Economic Development Director Tom Rumora tells how he uses the library both for business and for pleasure in the article on page 28. Find more business resources on page 21. As the days grow shorter and the first frost approaches, harvest the library’s bounty of seasonal cookbooks, gardening guides and holiday entertaining books. Library classes and events offer tips and inspiration for the cook or gardener, too. Try the monthly Vegetarian Cooking class at Salem Church or learn about Dutch Oven Cooking at Montross on October 9.

The CRRL is especially looking forward to a visit from George Washington himself, in one of our continuing lectures of the Stafford 350 lecture series. From Sulgrave Manor in England, the ancestral home of George Washington, Cymon Snow will discuss how the descendant of a Royalist family ended up defying his King and leading a new nation. This very special event will take place on Tuesday, October 7, at 7:00pm at the Stafford Campus of the University of Mary Washington.

getting to know the library What comes to mind when you picture a librarian? How about an Air Force veteran who raises goats and loves Virginia history? Meet Mutahara Mobashar, Head of Adult Research at the Salem Church Library!

What was your first library job? After working at the Germanna Community College Library, I volunteered in the Virginiana Room at Headquarters. I had taken some Civil War history classes and gotten interested in Virginia history.

How did you get involved with libraries? As child, I loved reading. Some countries I have lived in did not have libraries, so I would always go to the library whenever possible. As a teenager, I was able to get my own library card! While I was in the Air Force, a fellow Air Traffic Controller mentioned that his mom was a librarian and I found out that I could get my Master’s in Library and Information Science.

What do you like best about the work you do? Currently as Head of Research at Salem Church, I really enjoy making decisions that improve and influence my department to better serve our customers.

Mutahara Mobashar When you’re not at the library, what do you like to do? I live in rural Orange County with my husband and three boys, raise goats and chickens and our barn cats. When I have time, I read, cook, can produce and dabble in quilting.

What are you reading/watching/ listening to now? The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty, and Downton Abbey.

How Does It Work?

OverDrive eBooks in the Catalog You can now search for, place holds on, and download OverDrive eBooks and eAudios right in the online catalog. Having them integrated into the catalog makes it much easier for you to manage both your physical and digital materials in one place. Your digital checked-out items and holds appear under MyCRRL Borrowing. When your digital item is ready, you can download it right from the Checked Out screen. When an OverDrive eBook appears in the search results, there is a link labeled: “Check availability.” Clicking on that link quickly shows if the eBook is immediately available, as well as copy/holds information. To place a hold, click on “Request this Download,” and a popup window opens so you can select your desired format (Kindle, Adobe ePub, etc.). Clicking “Place hold” will ensure that you are notified by email as soon as your book is available. To renew items from the catalog, go to the OverDrive site at overdrive.librarypoint.org. In the future, we plan to integrate eBook vendors other than OverDrive into the catalog.

Ann Jones, the Business Development Manager for Comfort Keepers in Chatham, depends heavily on the library, its many branches and readily available computers and printers, as do her many wonderful colleagues. Comfort Keepers provides in-home care so seniors may continue to live independently in their own homes. Ann travels frequently all over the local area, and several times a week she stops by a CRRL branch, particularly the Ann Jones England Run Branch, to use a computer, access free WiFi, look up information for a client, print a document, use a copier, or fax an item before hopping back in the car to continue her busy work day. A resident of Stafford, Ann watched the England Run Branch being built and could hardly wait for it to open! She and her family use the England Run Branch frequently, and while visiting got to know the branch staff, which led to furthering the mission of Comfort Keepers: Ann offered two classes at the library specifically for seniors. One was Ask-a-Doc, with Geriatric Specialist Dr. Wayland Marks. The other covered The Five Wishes program, which assists with end-of-life concerns for seniors. Seniors or anyone attending these free classes may ask any question they wish from the presenters, and of course, additional information and books are available in the library for further reading. Ann plans to offer more free classes for seniors and their caregivers in the future. Comfort Keepers requires that its 280 employees attend monthly online training sessions, and many of those employees use the library computers to do so. With 8 locations, many computers, free printing and fast Internet service, using the library for online training just makes smart business sense!

customer spotlight 1. What was your first library experience? I went to Catholic elementary school, and don’t recall having a formal library in the school or within walking distance of our neighborhood, but I discovered the library when I entered public junior high school, and found it was a quiet place to study! We also had a set of encyclopedias at home, which reinforced my desire to learn from books.

careers, relationships, investments, hobbies, and almost any imaginable topic. By reading a little, we can learn a lot!

2. How do you use the library today? I enjoy wandering aimlessly and discovering a wide variety of subjects. At any moment, I might be attracted to books on urban homesteading, unusual diets, world religions, jazz, dogs, Civil War cannons, or retirement in Florida. In addition to having fun, library users can also find a wealth of practical guidance on

3. How does the library help you with your job? I often skim a stack of magazines on topics such as science, marketing, emerging trends, and experimental programs in other states and communities. Articles often lead to further research on key topics that could affect our region and my job. I am also somewhat “at the library” while searching online at home for tourism and business development ideas, because I can then find library resources to supplement what I find online. My local branch can help me find books anywhere in the system. What a great resource!
