CLASSES, EVENTS, WORKSHOPS, AND SERVICES AT THE CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY

welcome

MARTHA HUTZEL n DIRECTOR

As the weather cools and the leaves turn vibrant colors, it’s time to “Ready, Set, Organize!” It takes a lot of work to maintain a busy household and juggle everything from going to bed and getting up earlier, completing homework, feeding children around their club and sporting activities, to paying bills and keeping things tidy. Of course, businesses face their own unique challenges in maintaining productive organization. The library is here to help you make order out of chaos with special classes, books, and app recommendations on page 28. We make running errands easy by offering so much in one location: homework help, DVDs, books, and computers. You can also save time by downloading eBooks and eAudios; and our eMagazines app, Zinio, is now easier to use than ever! See pages 11-12 for details. Fall brings family favorite holidays and opportunities for sharing food, crafts, and time together. See page 21 to “Harvest the Bounty” that the library offers. While children and teens may be too young to vote on a national ballot, they can “Get Ready to Vote” by participating in our mock elections. We’ll have miniature voting booths at all of our branches so children and teens can choose between two favorite book characters. Don’t worry—adults can join the fun too! November 10–11 be sure to visit the Headquarters Library Theater and tour The Museum of Valor’s exhibit “1916: The World Loses Its Innocence.” This special 2-day exhibit will open with a reception on Thursday, November 10, 7:00-8:00, and everyone’s invited. Details on page 7.

Fall 2016

Regular @ Your Library readers will notice a new feature; our movie offerings for all ages are combined for easy browsing on page 22, including our Best Film Directors Series and our family movie nights. I am thrilled to announce that the CRRL has developed a new Strategic Plan to guide us into the future. For most adults, the 21st century library is very different from that of our childhoods and the plan will guide our mission and vision to better serve the needs of our community. Look for the plan to be posted on librarypoint.org and many thanks to everyone who took the time to complete a survey and attend a focus group. We couldn’t have done it without you! Rebecca Purdy has been named the CRRL’s new Deputy Director. She began shelving books in the children’s room while she was a sophomore in high school and returned to the CRRL as a teen librarian after completing her master’s in library science. Many of you will recognize her from the Children’s Book Column that she wrote for The Free Lance-Star in her most recent position of Youth Services Coordinator. The Headquarters Library teen room will open soon and include computRebecca Purdy ers, a collaboration area, a Deputy Director gaming center for STEM learning and decompression, and comfortable seating for homework or relaxation. The Porter Branch will soon be opening our third MakerLab in the system, joining those at England Run Branch and the Headquarters Library. Visit librarypoint.org for a complete schedule and drop in to see a 3D printer in action, use playdough to play a piano, or draw a map for miniature robots to follow.

behind the scenes For 41 years, Lee has supported a wide range of library services through purchasing supplies, equipment, and special promotional items for every branch of the library. How did you get involved with library service? I started working in a library in third grade. By the end of high school I was working two class periods per day, even unpacking and checking in new books as directed by the school librarian, appropriately named Mrs. Booker. What has been a favorite responsibility you have enjoyed? I particularly like the part of my job description that says “Other Duties As Necessary.” I have loved offering cooking classes for our customers, or taking a selection of library materials out to a farmers’ market so that the library could be represented at another venue in the community.

What are your goals for the library’s future? I believe that public libraries will continue to be relevant, and will function as community hubs where people seek information, use public computers, and borrow materials for education and enjoyment. I think that encouraging children and adults alike to use the library contributes to a better quality of life for all of us.

Lee Loudenslager Adams Purchasing Agent When you’re not at the library, what do you like to do? I am a kayaker, fisherman, birder, traveler, gardener, spinner, weaver, knitter, and photographer. I help coordinate field trips for the Virginia Society of Ornithology, and am a member of the Virginia Avian Records Committee.

What is one of the best-kept secrets about the library that you wish people knew? I wish more people realized that the library allows equal access to services without regard to how much money they have. I love Zinio for digital magazines, and eAudiobooks from OneClickdigital and OverDrive.

What are you reading/watching/ listening to now? New Orleans Mourning by Julie Smith, The Bones of Paris by Laurie R. King, and Lie Down with the Devil by Linda Barnes.

Commuter Corner With all the time you spend on the road, you’re likely to multitask and partake of a wee snack, or an entire meal, while cruising down the highway. How about pairing that breakfast burrito or afternoon milkshake with a foodie audiobook? We recommend these narrations, some with a dash of spice or a dollop of fun, and all guaranteed to please the literary connoisseur.

Best Film Directors A Series with Insider Commentary and Clips

n Headquarters, Thursday, October 6, 6:30–8:30 Presented by film expert Gary Olsen.

Steven Spielberg

Considered the most popular living director of our time, Steven Spielberg has led the film industry by revitalizing movie houses’ summer doldrums in creating the watershed blockbusters Jaws (1975), E.T.
