behind the scenes For more information on the hardworking community members who comprise the Library Board of Trustees, visit librarypoint.org/boardtrustees. How did you get involved with the library? As a historic preservation architectural historian, the greatest assets to me professionally have been libraries and archives. When Westmoreland County Administrator Norm Risavi asked me to serve on the Board of Trustees, I was delighted to continue my lifelong relationship with libraries in general and the CRRL in particular. What has been your favorite responsibility during your tenure? Serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and as a member of the Search and Selection Committee for the new Director of the CRRL was a rewarding experience, and helped set the CRRL on its new and exciting path for the 21st Century.

What are your goals for the library’s future? My goals, and those of the Board of Trustees, are to ensure the continued success of CRRL as the premier regional library system in Virginia, to increase the percentage of funding to CRRL’s materials budget for books, DVDs, etc., and to ensure that area jurisdictions continue to fund the library, so that the CRRL can provide the goods and services our library customers deserve. What do you like best about working with the library? I like ensuring that our culture, history, and community information remain available to all users. Libraries are now the only place you can reliably find information about many rare historical resources.

Kathryn Miller Library Board, Westmoreland County What do you wish people knew about the library? How hard CRRL employees work to provide services to our customers, even in tough times. What are you reading/watching/ listening to now? I am in Downton Abbey withdrawals of course, watching Mercy Street, reading Francis Russell’s biography of Warren G. Harding The Shadow of Blooming Grove, and Lost Communities of Virginia by Terri Fisher and Kirsten Sparenborg.

Commuter Corner Let’s relax this summer with literature that is transcendent, but short, absorbing, but short, and with world class prose, but short. Listen to a CD or eAudio of short stories as you cruise down the coast, up into the mountains, or, woe be you, on your way to work. A sampling of our short stories for your listening pleasure:

partner spotlight Lowery Pemberton, Friends of the Rappahannock How did you begin working with the library? When I first started as Education Coordinator at Friends of the Rappahannock, I began working with the library to add additional Nature Adventure Packs and make sure past packs were still ready for an adventure. What do you find valuable about the library’s partnership with your organization? The library’s partnership with FOR is extremely valuable as we work together to get more area youth outside investigating, teaching the community about river safety, and partnering to strengthen programs and literature. What do you find valuable about the library’s resources as a customer? I drive up and down Routes 17 and 3 very often and the audio books through the Overdrive app are amazing. I would not make it through my rides without them! What is one thing about the library that people may not know? You can request books and pick them up when they are ready, which is a great way to get what you want. What is your favorite book/movie/music? Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult, Harry Potter, Finding Neverland, 90’s Alternative/Pop. Nature Adventure Packs are available for checkout at all of our branches!

Best Film Directors

A SERIES WITH INSIDER COMMENTARY AND CLIPS n Headquarters, 1st Thursdays, 6:30–8:30 Presented by film expert Gary Olsen.

Stanley Kubrick • June 2

Woody Allen • July 7

This American director, the ultimate perfectionist and pioneering technician, produced breathtaking movies that sent viewers both into the future (2001: A Space Odyssey) and into the past (Barry Lyndon). Controversy was his moniker though, with Lolita and A Clockwork Orange shocking audiences. His wideranging classics, from political satire (Dr. Strangelove) to the brutality of war (Full Metal Jacket) to hair-raising thrillers (The Shining) redefined cinema.

When one thinks of this brilliant comedian’s films, the idea of slapstick overwhelms, with such classics as Bananas and Sleeper. But Allen’s directing and screenwriting productions are works of sophisticated wit and biting insightfulness that address universal themes, as exemplified by Annie Hall, Manhattan, and The Purple Rose of Cairo. An examination of this prolific film master’s long career will include a look at his most memorable clips.

Martin Scorsese • August 4

Considered one of the most significant and influential film directors in modern times, Scorsese combines his vast knowledge of film history with his Sicilian-American background to realistically reveal the sordid times in which we live. Films such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and The Departed examine the brutal world of crime. His tributes to historic figures in Raging Bull, Hugo, and The Aviator reflect his appreciation of monumental, troubled headliners. A revealing look at this multidimensional director.
